1 Contents May 2012 President s Corner... 1 From The CEO... 1 Administration... 2 Development & Coaching 3 Conference, Competition & Officials... 3 From The Sponsors... 4 Mailout Attachments... 5 Checklist For Centres... 5 President s Corner The year is going so fast, it s hard to believe that we are nearly up to the Medibank Annual Conference and the IGA Winter Championships. I am really looking forward to Conference this year, it should be a bumper one with the Association and Medibank paying for two delegates (as long as one of your delegates has not been to a Conference before). As in previous years, we have some great presentations and workshops planned, so I trust all Centres will endeavour to have at least one delegate there. We also have some great motions to debate, which were sent out with the Centre Conference paperwork last mid-may. Winter Centres should now be in full swing, and starting to plan for the IGA Winter Championships. The competition is again open to non- LAQ registered athletes from within the Winter Regions. There is also a motion before the conference to open the IGA Winter Championships to athletes from all Centres in Queensland. Unfortunately, the number of athletes at Winters has been declining over the past few years, so we are doing what we can to get the numbers up again. I wouldn t think that too many Summer Centre s will take advantage of the offer, but it will be great to offer it nonetheless. I trust all Summer Centres are having a good break, and will soon be planning for a great sign-on to coincide with the London Olympics See you all at Conference! From The CEO Tony Northey Medibank - For Better Health Included in this mail out for Winter Centres will be the Medibank hurdles stickers, Medibank athletes uniform patches and Medibank athlete shoe bags. You will find a letter included in the pack which provides further instructions on where to place the stickers and patches. We realise that this will involve some time on your behalf and we certainly appreciate your support of our newest sponsor Medibank, who have provided a great deal to Little Athletics already. I m sure all of you would have seen their contribution of 2 free delegates to this year s Conference (one delegate being new to LAQ Conferences) as just one example. One added benefit of the Medibank sponsorship that your members need to be aware of is a 5% discount on Medibank private health insurance. Contact your local Medibank branch to take advantage of this offer. Thank you again for your help and we look forward to seeing you all at the 2012 Medibank Conference on the Gold Coast. The Summer Centres will receive their stickers and patches at the start of your sign on.

2 Centre Advertising ByLaw Rescinded I m pleased to announce after a couple of false starts (pardon the pun) the LAQ Board has decided to rescind the Centre advertising ByLaw that precluded Centres from advertising in the catchment areas of other Centres. It was rescinded on the basis that the ByLaw as it was worded was never going to be able to be enforced. The Board has also decided to revisit the requirement for Centres to include surrounding Centres contact information in all advertising. This will be decided before the summer sign ons this year and all Centres will be advised of the process to follow should there be any changes. Updated ByLaw The Board at its May meeting, updated ByLaw (which was recently amended in October 2011). It has been amended to reflect the opinions of a number of Centres and how much they can charge a trialling athlete per week. The updated ByLaw will now read: (Amended May 2012) All Centres must offer the option of a two week trial at anytime throughout the respective Centre s competition season, to new members seeking registration. Centres may levy a maximum fee of $10.00 per week. This fee is to be deducted from the individual s registration fee if registering. This fee is non refundable for individuals not wishing to register. Administration Simon Cook 2012 Medibank Annual Conference By now, all Centres should have received their paperwork for the 2012 Medibank Annual Conference. If you have not, please contact Shannon in the LAQ Office as soon as possible. Included in the Conference paperwork was a Postal Voting Form. Any Centre who is not attending the Conference, and who is located more than 100kms from the Conference venue, is entitled to complete a Postal Voting Form. Centres who are attending the Conference do not need to complete this form. The closing date for Postal Votes is Wednesday 6 th June. Late votes will not be counted, so please ensure you complete and return this form on time so your Centre s votes are counted. A copy of the motions is also available on the LAQ website / 2013 Team Manager Centre Template and Manual All Summer Centres will find enclosed in this mailout, a CD containing a copy of the 2012 / 2013 Centre Template for all versions of Team Manager. Also enclosed is the Team Manager Manual. If you have any questions regarding the Team Manager program, please contact Ngaire in the LAQ Office. Registration Check Summer Centres To ensure the Association has the correct figures from the previous season, all Summer Centres will find enclosed with this mailout, a Registration Report with final figures and a breakdown of each age group. If you have an issue with the figures listed for your Centre, please contact Ngaire in the LAQ Office. Summer Season Registration Fees The LAQ registration fees for the 2012 / 2013 season are: Tiny Tots: $ U6: $ U7-U17: $ The above fees include GST. In accordance with LAQ s philosophy of keeping the costs of membership within financial reach of every child, Centres should be aware of Rule of the Centre Constitution regarding the maximum fees that can be charged. For Centres that charge a once off fee at the start of the season, the total fee cannot be greater than three times the LAQ registration fee. Centres that charge a fee at the start of the season as well as running fees throughout the season, the overall total cannot be greater than four times the LAQ registration fee. The Association will be performing checks throughout the season to ensure Centres are abiding by this rule. If Centres are charging a Parent Levy, please be aware of By Law This fee may be no more than the cost of one Association U7 U17 registration. This amount is $ / 2013 Winter Centre Registrations All Winter Centres should be regularly sending in their registrations and payments for the 2012 / 2013 season. If your Centre has not sent in these registrations please forward them in as soon as possible. Registrations should be forwarded to the LAQ Office every two weeks. All registrations must be provided through Team Manager. Once Centres have exported their athlete roster from Team Manager they will need to attach it to an and send it to info@qlaa.asn.au If your Centre does not have access to the Internet the athlete roster will need to be burnt onto a CD and sent to the Association postal address. All Centres will need to complete a Registration Receipt form when your athlete roster containing your registrations is sent into the Association. An electronic copy of the Registration Receipt form can be found on the LAQ website under Centre Admin > Administration Forms or the Association can the form to Centres upon request. Payment for registrations can be made by cheque or direct deposit. Australian Best Performance (ABP) It seems that we omitted some details from our State Team Review in last month s LA News. 2

3 Our apologies to Aliyah Johnson who, as well as setting an ABP in the Pentathlon, also set a new ABPe time of in the U15 Girls 90m Hurdles. Congratulations Aliyah! Summer Centre Team Manager Workshops Team Manager Workshops are currently being planned for Summer Centres. If your Centre is interested in hosting a Team Manager workshop or you are able to suggest a suitable venue for the workshop to be held. Please send an to info@qlaa.asn.au if your Centre is interested or if you have any suggestions. An ideal workshop venue would be in a room able to seat 11 people at tables, have access to power and a clean wall or screen for a data projector. Office of Fair Trading All incorporated Centres should be aware of their obligations to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT). As an incorporated Centre you are required to submit an Annual Return Form and payment each year within one month after your AGM. This Form is sent to your Centre from the OFT after the close of your financial year. If you don t receive it, go to and click on the Associations & Non- Profits tab and follow the links to download a copy of the form. Failure to return this Form, payment and copies of your AGM and Audit Report may result in a fine from the OFT and could also jeopardise funding opportunities for your Centre. If your Centre has any questions on OFT requirements, please contact Shannon in the LAQ Office. New Australian Record For Rheed McCracken The Association has been following the athletic journey of Rheed McCracken, U15 athlete from West Bundaberg LAC. Rheed is currently in Zurich, Switzerland, and competed at the Swiss Nationals. He finished the meet with one first placing and 3 second placings, including a 2 nd in the 100m, in which he set a new Australian Record of seconds. Congratulations again Rheed! Shannon Kruger & Ngaire Hollands Development & Coaching 2012 Winter Coaching Camp The 2012 Winter Coaching Camp will be held in Townsville on Tuesday 26 th and Wednesday 27 th June. The cost for the camp is $80 for the two days and includes all coaching services and meals throughout the day. We encourage all Winter Centres to promote the camp to your athletes. If you have any questions relating to the camp, please contact Daniel in the Association Office. McDonald s All Comers Coaching Clinics During the month of May, the Association held a number of McDonald s All Comers Coaching Clinics throughout the State. Details are as follows: Wulguru 12 th May 35 athletes Dirranbandi 12 th May 12 athletes St George - 13 th May 12 athletes Gracemere 19 th May Tara & District 19 th May Goondiwindi 20 th May As you can see, the clinics were well attended and very much enjoyed by all athletes. Our thanks goes to the above Centres for hosting these Clinics and to the LAQ coaching team of Paul Bannister, Ian Thompson, Stuart Dempster, Jo Spyro, Les Geary, Lyn Lucic and Justin Anlezark for making these days a great success. If any Centre would like to host a McDonald s All Comers Clinic, please contact Daniel in the Association Office. Introduction To Coaching Course Wulguru LAC also hosted an ITC Course on the 20 th of May with 12 people in attendance. It was well received by all attendees and our thanks is extended to Paul Bannister and Ian Thompson for presenting the course. ITC s are a great way to take your first steps in coaching and to get qualified to help out at Centre level. If any Centres are interested in hosting an ITC course please contact Daniel in the Association Office. Little Athletics Program for Schools (LAPS) - School Visits It s an Olympic year, so why not piggyback on the enthusiasm and excitement? Here is an opportunity for Little Athletics QLD to promote your Centre to your local schools. Become involved in the 2012 LAPS Program. If Centres have any schools in their area that you would like LAQ to visit, please contact Daniel in the Association Office. Daniel Nethery & Shaun Lethem Conference, Competition & Officials 2012 Medibank Conference Centres are reminded that the closing date for Conference Registrations was Wednesday 23 rd May. Thank you to those Centres who have submitted their form on time. Those that haven t are encouraged to do so as soon as possible. Once we receive this form, you will be receiving a confirmation letter as well as other pertinent information 3

4 about the conference, the venue, planned social activities and additional Conference Handbooks. The Delegate Confirmation Form is due on Wednesday 6 th June. Again, please ensure this is returned to the Association Office on time. As mentioned last month, there are a number of activities being offered on the Friday leading into the Conference weekend. There is a golf game planned for the morning. Anyone interested should contact Adam White on We are also holding an Officials information and exam session in the afternoon. Anyone interested should contact Karen in the LAQ Office. And finally, we have our regular Trivia Night on Friday night for those members who are present. We have had a slight change to the Presentations and Workshops being offered at Conference. A presentation on Officiating at the 2018 Commonwealth Games has been included. We are no longer holding a workshop on Changing the Face of Competitions; instead we are excited to offer a workshop on Centre Development Strategies. Please refer to your Conference Handbooks for the full agenda with Presentations and Workshops. From The Sponsors IGA IGA had an overwhelming response to the Win a $100 Gift Card competition that ran in February s newsletter. We are pleased to announce Maree Patane from City North Little Athletics in Albion will be receiving a $100 IGA Gift Card to spend at her local store. Thank-you to all the entrants, keep an eye on your inbox for all the latest news and competitions! 5 Nordic Starting Caps No Supply! Time to Seek Alternatives Taiwan, the principal supplier of starting caps has recently introduced new regulations involving the production of starting caps. This followed a tragic explosion which decimated the main factory and involved loss of life. Taiwan s reaction was more stringent regulations controlling the making of starting caps and transport of the product. As you would be aware, starting caps are considered an explosive and limited transport restrictions already apply. The end result has been no new production of starting caps and no other manufacturers taking up production at this stage. World of Sport has limited stocks remaining. Once these are depleted there will be no further supply. On the positive side, World of Sport has been able to source a new product being the Electronic Pistol and Amplifier. Featuring a large 30 watt rechargeable amp, starter s pistol and waistband transmitter, race starters can still move freely with the starting signal transmitted wirelessly to the amp to start proceedings. Simply locate the amp near the starters and it s business as normal! It has a range of starting signals various sports, including a gun for athletics as well as a high-vis strobe light to assist competitors. Enclosed with this mailout, you will find a one page advert for the product.
