2 FIVE DUCKS MAKE THE BALLOT FOR THE 56TH NHL ALL-STAR GAME Five Ducks are currently up for a chance to start in the 56th annual NHL All-Star game, which will be held in Atlanta on Sunday, Jan. 27. As revealed in November, the fives Ducks listed on the XM/NHL All-Star Fan Balloting Presented by 2K Sports are defensemen Francois Beauchemin and Chris Pronger, forwards Ryan Getzlaf and Andy McDonald and goaltender J.S. Giguere. Beauchemin, Getzlaf and Giguere are each looking to make it to the All-Star Game for the first time and were excited upon hearing they had made the ballot. It is another step moving forward in a situation that I would love to be part of, said Getzlaf, who scored two goals in the YoungStars game during All-Star festivities in Dallas last year. I got to be a small part of it last year and I would love to be a big part of it this year. Pronger has appeared in five All-Star games and says his biggest thrill was his first one. My first All-Star game was in Tampa, Pronger said. It was Wayne Gretzky s last All-Star game, so that was very memorable. Andy McDonald was one of two Ducks (along with Teemu Selanne) to appear in last year s # 25 CHRIS PRONGER All-Star game for the Western Conference, which was coached by the Ducks # 19 ANDY Randy Carlyle. Scott Niedermayer was originally selected by the fans to start the game but an injury did not allow him to participate. MCDONALD Making his first All-Star game appearance, McDonald won fastest skater honors in the SuperSkills competition held the day before the game, circling the rink in It s a great event, McDonald said. I know the guys have a lot of fun with the skills competition. In the first All-Star game since 2004, the West

3 prevailed for a 12-9 victory last year. Selanne scored on his only shot of the game for the West s second goal of the game while McDonald did not register a point on three shots. Through Jan. 2, fans around the world can Vote Now, Vote Often online at NHL.com to select the starting lineups for the 2008 NHL All-Star Game in Atlanta. In addition, U.S. fans also can cast votes through Verizon Wireless cell phones. The season marks the # 23 20th year in which fans will determine the starting lineups for the NHL All-Star Game. Fans can vote for six Eastern Conference All-Stars and six Western Conference All-Stars: three forwards, two defensemen and one goaltender for each team. If a player is not listed on the ballot, a space is provided for write-in votes. 23 FRANCOIS BEAUCHEMIN # 35 J.S. GIGUERE # 15 RYAN GETZLAF

4 Portland Pirates UPDATE November marked some monumental moments for some Portland Pirates. On Nov. 5, center Andrew Ebbett was honored with the title Mr. Clutch by theahl.com. Brandon Segal followed up with his 100th point in the AHL on Nov. 10 and it could not have come at a better time. Segal had two goals in a 4-3 overtime victory over divisional rival Providence. One day later on Nov. 11, goaltender Jonas Hiller, now with the Ducks, had a career-high 41 saves in a 2-1 victory over Hartford. Finally, Gerald Coleman made 31 saves on Nov. 21 in the Pirates 3-0 victory over Lowell. It was the first shutout of the season for a Pirates goalie and the first in Coleman s career with the Pirates. Brian Hayward has been the Ducks television analyst since the team s inception in But he is also known for something else, stemming from his playing days in the NHL. Hayward was the goaltender on the first San Jose Sharks team, in As such, he had the first opportunity to reflect his and the team s personality on the design of his goalie mask. He recently spoke to Beyond the Boards about that and about his favorite goalie masks in the league. BTB: What year did you paint you legendary Sharks goalie mask? BH: My first year in San Jose, the first year of the An energizing presence for the Pirates in November was Geoff Platt, who was acquired by the Ducks from the Columbus Blue Jackets in exchange for Aaron Rome and Clay Wilson on Nov. 15. In Platt s first seven games with Pirates, which all came in November, the center scored in each of them for a total of 13 points in the stretch. This month, 12 of the Pirates 14 games are against Atlantic Division rivals. In the tight, competitive Atlantic, the Pirates cannot afford to let any games slip away. Stay up-to-date with the Pirates during this critical stretch at portlandpirates.com. Ice hockey has been played for more than 100 years, but the concept of a goalie mask is relatively new. Believe it or not, there was a time when goalies would be in net with nothing protecting their faces. In 1930, Clint Benedict of the Montreal Maroons wore a leather mask on his face for several games after a puck broke his cheekbone. However, the mask did not stay on long, because Benedict complained he had great difficulty viewing low shots. Therefore, he stopped wearing the mask. It was not until the season that a goalie began to wear a goalie mask on a regular basis. A goalie by the name of Jacques Plante wore a face mask made out of fiberglass at a game in the old Madison

5 franchise in It was an idea that seemed like a natural for me going there being the original goaltender. It was right after the time when the movie Jaws was out. So having the face of Jaws coming out of the mask seemed like a natural. BTB: What masks around the league had inspired you? BH: Goalie masks at that time were becoming more and more unique and more personalized. Ed Belfour had his eagle mask Eddie the Eagle, Curtis Joseph had his Cujo mask. When I played in Montréal I had a mask that was painted with Canadian logos. BTB: Do you think your legendary mask helped gain more attention for the Sharks during their early years in the league? BH: I do, because hockey was a real novelty there. The first year of the Sharks we were actually playing in Daly City, and they were building what is now known as the Shark Tank. We were actually closer to San Francisco than San Jose. They were looking to introduce hockey into the San Francisco marketplace, so anything unique to the sport was an opportunity for them to get a little more press coverage. I can actually remember early on a lot of local beat writers wanted to photograph the mask and write articles on it. BTB: Describe the process of coming up with a concept for the mask. BH: It was done by an artist by the name of Greg Harrison. Greg was the original designer not only of the combination cage and fiberglass shell mask, but he was the first person to start painting goalie masks, going all the way back to Jim Rutherford with the Detroit Red Wings. Greg and I talked about the concepts, but all the artistic elements in the mask are all Greg Harrison. It is completely his design, his rights and he actual owns that design. BTB: How did your teammates, coaches and the league react when they first saw your mask? BH: They thought it was a cool mask, but there were a lot of other cool masks out there. BTB: Over the years we have seen nearly every goalie in the NHL have a custom or unique designed mask. Are there any that stick out to you? BH: There are a lot. I will go back to the Ed Belfour mask, which I think is a classic style mask with the eagles on the side. I also like going way back to Gilles Gratton, who was a goaltender who had a reputation of being a flaky type of guy. He had a lion painted on his mask when he was on the Rangers because his Aquarius sign was Leo the lion. I really thought that was an interesting design. I like the designs that relate to how unique the franchise is or to the players individually. There have been some that stood out. Jerry Cheevers had a mask with stitches painted on it when he was with the Boston Bruins. I thought that was a real cool idea. BTB: Now we are starting to see Major League Baseball catchers wearing masks that are similar to goalie masks. BH: I think functionally it is a much better product than the old catcher s mask. The design of a hockey goalie mask is all about having no flat surfaces. When a puck hits the goaltender in the head, it is a glancing blow and not a direct blow to the head. There are definitely safety issues involved in the style of the mask. That just transfers over to baseball as well. I do think there are considerable advantages for the baseball catchers with improved visibility, and you have wrapped-around protection now on foul tips or getting hit with the bat. There are lots of good reasons why that mask design makes sense. Square Garden after he had taken a puck to the cheekbone. With pressure from his coach, Plante stopped wearing the mask. However, after a few more pucks to the face, Plante started wearing the mask again the following spring. Eventually, goalies started to follow suit and began wearing masks on a regular basis. Andy Brown was the last goalie to ever play in an NHL game without a mask, in As more goalies started to wear masks, the evolution of the goalie mask began. What started off as a piece of leather strapped to a goalie s face soon became a piece of fiberglass custom molded to a goalies face. Today, masks are still made of fiberglass, but now manufactures have added materials such as Kevlar, carbon fiber, and Capron nylon. Fiberglass is still used because of its light weight, and it is extremely hard to damage. Kevlar adds strength to the mask, but it is very lightweight. Carbon fiber is similar to fiberglass, but it has higher strength and stiffness. The goalie mask has not only evolved in the look and the materials used to manufacture it, but it has spread into another professional sport. Baseball catchers are starting to move from the typical cage-style catcher s mask, and are using more of a goalie mask style. Today, goalie masks are not only considered a form of protection, but a form of art. Goalies pay top dollar for an artist to come up with a concept and paint that concept onto their masks. One of the most original and more recognizable goalie masks of all time belonged to none other than Ducks television analyst Brian Hayward (see related story). Today goalies paint their mask either to resemble their team or a side of themselves.
