4 Moona Plains Station Walcha Phone: Mobile: I am writing today on a bleak and wet Walcha winter s day. The short term pain will be a long term gain come spring. Seasonal conditions are good at present on Moona Plains and I hope that you are all enjoying a good run at the moment. Livestock prices remain high with bull sales through the roof. Great times to be involved in the cattle industry. We have had a busy 12 months since last year s sale. Dad turned 90 in December, Mum and Dad celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in March, Emma turned 18, Thomas turned 16 and Lachlan turned 12. With Emma in her last year at school we have given cattle showing away whilst Emma prepares for her HSC. Both boys represented Central North Junior Rugby in their respective age groups, which has involved a lot of travelling. Our sale bulls have had an up and down run over the past 18 months. They have been on crop since November last year, which apart from the heat wave conditions in January has served them well. The bulls will present in great working order and will need no pampering or letting down. They have not had any grain assistance at all, which has always been our aim. This is exceptionally hard to achieve in our Eastern New England climate but the winners will be our clients, as they are purchasing bulls prepared commercially with a commercial focus in mind. You don t need 900 plus kg sale bulls to breed sale topping weaners or front paddock replacement females. This year s draft has another outstanding run of Matauri Reality sons. Last year the 16 Reality sons topped the sale at $12000 and averaged $7,156. This was the highest averaging sire group. The Reality s this year have excellent carcase attributes combined with strong maternal traits, like their sire. The bulls are typically low birth, short gestation length calves that grow into well muscled, easily finished bulls with superb heads, structure and great testicular development. These bulls are well suited to heifer or cow mating s in self replacing herds. The Reality sons types, lend themselves to being versatile in producing progeny suited to both domestic and export markets. We have on offer this year the first draft of Nairn Park Hotshot H100 sons. H100 is the large framed Coonamble Elevator E11 son that we had on show at our sale in Like his sire he is a large framed sound bull, with a tight sheath, large testicles and superb temperament. He has stamped his progeny with their extra frame. His dam is an Alliance I87 daughter, tracing back to the Wattletop Usual female line. H100 sons have the physical characteristics to breed larger framed progeny. Our Elevator daughters in production have superb udders and have developed into sound, fertile young cows. 2 daughters H11 and H14 have joined our donor team and have been flushed successfully to Matauri Reality, Koupals B and B Identity and EF Complement, with the first calves due in early September. Our final draft of Milwillah Elsom F189 sons are on offer. Elsom was tested in the Angus Society s progeny test program. There is 1 excellent Warwick son and a group of autumn yearling bulls by Nairn Park E58, the high selling Ada son out of our most influential cow Nairn Park Marie S101. The final group is by Nairn Park H109, a very impressive Ada son. We made the decision to bring our sale forward to earlier in July to get away from clashing with another stud that decided to claim our date. Having the sale in the school holidays also enables the kids to be at home and involved in the sale, which they all enjoy. 5 Nairn Park Angus Stud History The Nairn Park Angus Stud was founded at Grafton NSW on the 4th September The foundation females were nine stud females from the Leitch family s Tunbridge Stud at Merriwa NSW. In 1962 our foundation sire, Barwidgee Figaro (s: Bruce of Mangatoro) and a mature stud cow, Barwidgee Nymph 2nd (s: Kahlua Crusader) with a heifer calf at foot, were purchased from the Barwidgee Stud, Caramut Victoria. Additional females have been added from the Rossmoyne, Silverlea, Sparta and Merric dispersals. Other females have been selected from Barwidgee, Gibraltar, Millah Murrah and Wattletop. To this base of quality females we have added the highest quality bulls available. Selection emphasis has always focussed on weight for age, muscling, structure, fertility, temperament and thriftiness. This is an Australian record price for a 2 year old Angus bulls sold privately. - Milwillah Elsom F189 Purchased in 2012 as top priced bull at the Milwillah Angus Bull Sale. Included in cohort 3 of the Angus Society s sire benchmarking trial. - Dalwhinnie Karate Kid Nairn Park has been performance recording for nearly 40 years. Nairn Park was a member of the inaugural Angus herd improvement group. We consider modern performance recording as an essential component of 21st century stud breeding, but we still use our eyes as the final test. Nairn Park showed successfully until A highlight was showing the Supreme Angus Exhibit at the New England Angus Show and Sale at Tamworth in Nairn Park has started to show both stud cattle and steers again in recent years. The primary aim is to support the children s great interest in cattle breeding and exhibiting as well as showcasing our cattle to a wider audience. Our studs future development involves a global search for the right genetics to complement and enhance our operation.
