1 GREATER SHAWNEE AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE 2017 Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show REVISED AIMS AND PURPOSES All sponsored activities in this show are designed to achieve those "Aims and Purposes" set forth as follows: 1. Create and nurture an appreciation for agriculture, rural values and the free enterprise system. 2. Pay tribute to the honor and dignity of work. 3. Develop leadership, responsibility, citizenship, discipline, and a keen sense of fair play among Oklahoma's 4-H and FFA youth. 4. Reward young people for pursuit of excellence and recognize their achievements. 5. Expose young people to business principles and the financial realities of risk taking. 6. Afford Oklahoma s 4-H and FFA youth an enjoyable, rewarding, and educational experience in the care, feeding, selection and improvement of livestock. 7. Encourage 4-H and FFA youth to employ a practical, commonsense approach to the selection, purchase, and fitting of their livestock. 8. Provide opportunities for families to draw closer to and be supportive of their children. 9. Prepare our youth for the responsibilities of parenthood by allowing them to be solely responsible for the food, shelter, and welfare of their livestock project. 10. Create opportunities for business leaders and 4-H and FFA youth to spend time together. 11. Provide our county with an event of state stature and significance to 4-H and FFA youth. 12. Provide a showcase for outstanding young people, using state of the art technology to produce and exhibit livestock of exemplary quality. Acknowledgment To the instructors and students for the many hours they spend working with the livestock as well as working during the show; we say "thanks to each and every one of you."

2 GENERAL RULES AND REGULATIONS 1. This show is open to all 4-H and FFA members of Pottawatomie County who meet age and membership guidelines established by the 4-H clubs and FFA chapters in Pottawatomie County. Youth must reside in or attend school in Pottawatomie County to be eligible to participate. By entering in the show, participants are verifying that they are in good academic standing at the time of the show and understand that if they are found to not be eligible as a result of the school contacting the show management; the management will support the local school district in any disciplinary actions taken. Likewise, home-schooled families verify that they are meeting the mandates of the State regarding curriculum standards. If the exhibitor is found to be ineligible they agree that they will forfeit all prizes and premiums that may have been paid by the show. 2. Countywide nominations will be held on December 8, 2016 between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Expo Center. All animals to be nominated must be brought to the Expo Center to be nominated regardless of prior Oklahoma Youth Expo Nominations, with the exception of swine. All swine must be nominated through the 2017 Oklahoma Youth Expo swine nomination process, with copies of OYE nomination form, vet certified bloodtest paperwork, OYE nomination tag # and County nomination form turned in for ALL swine at County Nominations. All heifers that have been previously nominated must be nominated for the current year. There will be no county charge per nomination. All heifer nomination forms must have the birthdate of the heifer at the time of nomination. All steers must have a breed listed at time of nomination. Cattle must be nominated in the exhibitor s name at nominations. ( No family nominations in beef.) All swine must be pseudo rabies tested prior to nomination and a receipt for the test provided at nomination. This responsibility is left up to the exhibitor. If an animal loses it s tag and it has to be replaced it MUST be reported immediately to the show Committee prior to the beginning of the junior livestock show or the animal will be disqualified. 3. An eligibility card must be signed by a parent, agreeing to adhere to all rules and show time regulations. Ag teachers, 4-H leaders, parents or exhibitors must provide a list of current eligibility from their school on the first day of the junior livestock show. 4. All entry cards must be signed by the exhibitor & 4-H Agent/leader or FFA instructor. (Be sure all information on the entry card is correct before they are signed.) 5. Only breeds listed are permitted to participate. 6. All beef, lambs, market goats and swine must be owned prior to county nomination date and must have been continuously owned and fed personally by the exhibitors. Exhibitors are required to maintain full possession and to personally care for, prepare and show their entries for the Pott. Co. spring livestock show from nomination date through the Pott. Co. Junior Spring Livestock Show. 7. A total of 3 steers, 3 swine, 3 lambs, 3 beef heifers, 3 market goats and 3 doe goats can be shown by any one exhibitor

3 8. Exhibitors who have shown animals in any other county fair or county stock show are not eligible to show in Pottawatomie County that school year. Exceptions will be made for transfers with prior notifications. 9. Only exhibitors and authorized stock show personnel will be allowed in the show arena. 10. In Showmanship classes, Junior, exhibitors are 9 12 years old. Intermediate, years old. Seniors, years old. Age is determined as of the first day of the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show. Exhibitors must show their own animal during the showmanship classes. 11. Age requirements: Age is determined as of the first day of the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show, you must be 9 years old as of the first day of the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show. 12. All traveling trophies must be returned to the Greater Area Shawnee Chamber of Commerce by the first Monday in February to be displayed during the Trophy Auction/Pig Roast. 13. A family must nominate as many animals as junior exhibitors within the family. 14. Otto Krausse Stewardship awards will be awarded to the FFA Chapter or 4-H Club in each species whose members best exhibit: cleanliness, tidy appearance and added decorative/educational value in the stalling area, as well as courteous, helpful behavior and overall sportsmanship in preparation for, during, and after the show. The Otto Krausse Stewardship awards for sheep, goat, beef and swine will be awarded during the Premium sale Awards Ceremony. Each species award will include a plaque and cash award. 15. Agreement of Responsibility and Liability: Participants must maintain full control from the time of county nominations, custody, care and feeding of the animals and personal property that they bring on or about the premises of the Pott. Co. Jr. Livestock Show. It is clearly understood and agreed that the Pott. Co. Jr. Livestock Show and its officials, officers, directors, employees and agents shall not be responsible for any damage, loss or injury to any person or property that is caused directly or indirectly for any reason at this show. The exhibitors agree to indemnify the Pott.Co. Jr. Livestock Show and hold the organization harmless for all damages, injuries, losses, expenses or liabilities that they may incur at this show, including any that may result from Pott. Co. Jr. Livestock Show enforcing its rules and regulations. By entering this show, the participants and their parents or guardians agree to the terms described in these rules and agree to comply with all the rules and regulations governing the show. FITTING AND SHOWING 1. CARE & SHOWING a. Each exhibitor is expected to care for and groom his or her animals throughout the show. He or she may be assisted by their own immediate family (limited to parents, brothers and/or sisters), Agricultural Education Instructor, County Extension Agent and other eligible exhibitors from their respective club or chapter. The official Pott Co. 4-H certified volunteer leader for a club will be permitted to assist the youth under his or her supervision. Pott. Co. 4-H leaders must be certified by December 31,

4 b. Each exhibitor is required to show their own animal during the show, sale order and premium sale. In the case of sickness, injury or two animals in the same class after arrival to the show, the exhibitor may then select another junior exhibitor from the exhibitors respective club or school to show his or her animal. Substitute showmen MUST be approved by the Pott. Co. Jr. Livestock Show Committee prior to entering the show ring. c. Only one person at a time shall lead animals into the show ring. d. Any exhibitor using excess force will be warned once, upon a second offense the exhibitor will be excused from the show arena. e. All exhibitors must use humane show collars during the goat show. 2. ANY VIOLATION OF THE FOLLOWING RULES WILL AUTOMATICALLY RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION AND WILL BE CONSIDERED SUFFICIENT CAUSE TO BAR OR SUSPEND THE VIOLATOR FROM FUTURE PARTICIPATION AT THE SPRING LIVESTOCK SHOW. a. Any product administered internally or used externally to alter the conformation and/or appearance of an animal for exhibition is prohibited. This includes false tail heads (or use of any false hair), use of graphite, powders, hemp or other similar substances. b. Any attempt to change natural color of an animal, either purebred or crossbred, by changing or enhancing the color of hair, fleece or skin at any point, spot or area of the animal's body. c. Misrepresenting the age of the animal for the class in which it is shown. d. Striking the animal to cause swelling in a depressed area. e. Insertion of foreign material to include air under the skin. f. The use of alcoholic beverages in the feed or administered as a drench. g. Any artificial filling of any kind, by any means, water drench or air included. h. Surgery of any kind performed to change the natural contour or appearance of the animal's body or hide. i. The use of any drug or chemical compound that is not approved by the Food and Drug Administration for use in meat animals is prohibited. The illegal administration of approved drugs and compounds is also prohibited. j. Criticizing or interfering with the judge, exhibitors, classifies, committee members, and other show officials or other conduct detrimental to the breed or the show. CHALLENGING ELIGIBILITY Any exhibitor or his or her parent or guardian wishing to challenge the eligibility must do so with a written and signed statement and a $ deposit. This applies to a protest filed after the nomination date of animals and prior to the opening date of the Pott. Co. Junior Livestock Show. Any protest during the show must be submitted in writing to any member of the grievance committee within one hour after that animal has shown within the breed or division. If the challenge is upheld, the deposit will be returned to the protestor. In the event the challenge is denied, the deposit will be forfeited to the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show. Only exhibitors or his or her parents or guardian may file a complaint. A Grievance Committee will be comprised of the General Superintendent, Species Superintendent, or Assistant and three committee members to be appointed by the Ag Task Force Committee. Each committee member will be asked to give their views on grievances. Agriculture Educators and County Extension personnel may be asked to serve in an advisory capacity. If the challenge is upheld, the exhibitor and their animals are ineligible for further competition in the Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show

Wood Foundation, FFA and 4-H Booster Clubs throughout Pottawatomie County, Shawnee Agri-Business Boosters, The Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center and its staff members, local Civic Clubs, the voters of Pottawatomie County and many other individuals, organizations and businesses whose generosity of time and money have provided for the 2017 Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show and Bonus Auction. Schedule of Events The overall dates for the 2017 Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Show are February 28- March 3, OVERALL LIVESTOCK SHOW Superintendent Randy Gilbert SWINE Superintendent Kile Furr Asst. Superintendent Jack Thompson 1. Weighing will be done by the official committee in charge. a) Show classification weight will range from a minimum weight of 180 lbs and a maximum weight of 350 lbs. NO WEIGH BACK DURING THE SHOW. b) Breeds recognized are: (1) AOB (Berks, Spots, Polands, Herefords) (2) Chesters, (3) Durocs, (4) Hampshires, (5) Yorkshires, (6) Crossbred, and will show in this order. A breed must have 3 or more animals to qualify for a recognized breed. c) Breed sale order will be done within each breed. A final premium sale selection will made in the breed during the show. SHEEP Superintendent Mandy Hasbell Asst. Superintendent Sarah Weeks 1. Weighing will be done by the official committee in charge. a) All sheep will be weighed and divided into 5 weight divisions. Each division and reserve division winner will show for Grand Lamb. b) A preliminary sale order will be done within each division. A final premium sale selection will be completed at the end of the show. MARKET WETHER GOATS BREEDING DOE GOATS- Superintendent Mandy Hasbell Asst. Superintendent Sarah Weeks 1. Weighing will be done by the official committee in charge. a) Market Wether goat classes will be weighed and divided into 3 weight divisions. b) Breeding Doe goat classes will be weighed and divided into 3 weight divisions. A preliminary sale order will be done within each division. A final premium sale selection will be completed at the end of the show

6 BEEF Superintendent Shawn Fleming Asst. Superintendent Suzanne Gilbert BREEDS Breeds recognized are: Angus, Beefmaster, Brangus, Chianina, Hereford, Limousin, Maine, Santa Gertrudes, Shorthorn, and Simmental. Breeds not having three entries will be classified by the superintendent to the best of their ability recognizing English, Exotic and Braham influence. Crossbred steers and commercial heifers will also have classes. ** THE BEEF SHOW WILL BE A BLOW AND SHOW FOR BOTH THE STEERS AND HEIFERS. No adhesive, glue or paint will be allowed in the show ring. The exhibitor will not be allowed to enter the ring with fit cattle. 1. HEIFERS Registration papers on recognized breeds will be required for entry at the show. a) A breed show will be held for all breeds registered or recorded with respective breed association. Classes will be divided by the Show Committee utilizing 6 months or less or natural age breaks. b) Eligibility: Heifers must be registered in the individual's name with their respective breeds, as defined by respective breed association. Papers must be in the individual's name prior to show dates. Animals with illegible/ no tattoos will show in the commercial class. c) Commercial heifers will be divided into classes by weight. Natural breaks will be used to equalize the classes. d) Each breed will be divided in classes by the Show Committee. Animals must be born on or after 1/1/15, and prior to 9/1/16. e) Tattoos, brands and micro chips will be checked upon entering. 2. STEERS Will have ear tags and micro chips checked at entry time. a) Steers will be divided into groups by weight, according to their breed. b) Natural breaks and number of entries will be used in equalizing classes. c) Market Steers must weigh over 1000 pounds and prospect steers must weigh between 450 and 999 pounds. 8 PREMIUM AUCTION 1. Swine Forty-eight swine will be selected for the premium auction. Grand and Reserve Grand Swine plus 46 other swine will be allowed in the auction. The number of swine in each breed listed will be determined by a equal percentage entered the day of the show to make the premium sale: AOB, Chesters, Durocs, Hampshires, Yorks, Crossbreds. 2. Sheep Grand and Reserve Grand, plus 16 lambs will be allowed in the auction. A preliminary sale order will be done within each division. Premium sale line up will be done within divisions, and then overall so no more than 5 lambs will be on the line at one time. The top 18 lambs still sell based upon quality. 3. Market Goat Grand and Reserve Grand market goat, the Grand and Reserve doe goat, will automatically make the auction. The remaining 14 goats will be selected by the judge, based upon quality as to which animal is more ideal as related to an ideal market goat or an ideal doe goat. 4. Beef The Grand and Reserve Grand Champion Steer, the Supreme and Reserve Grand Champion Heifer, will automatically make the auction. The remaining 22 beef animals will be selected by the judge, based upon quality as to which animal is more ideal as related to an ideal steer or an ideal heifer. 5. No exhibitor will be allowed to sell more than 1 animal. All Grand and Reserve Grands must sell unless two or more are owned by one exhibitor. Of the Grand and Reserve Grands, the highest placing animal must sell in the Premium Auction. Once an exhibitor makes the sale with a particular animal all other entries within that specie will be scratched. An exhibitor shall be required to sell the highest placing animal in the show. 6. Add ons will be allowed on Premium Auction exhibitors only and will be recognized during the Premium Auction. Individuals making solicitations during the Auction will result in exhibitors not being able to participate in future Pottawatomie County Junior Livestock Shows. Individuals wishing to contribute to students not making the premium sale must do so as an outside contribution. 7. All animals must be moved out within one hour following the Premium Auction. 8. All animals must be presented at the Premium Auction as they were shown in previous classes. Absolutely no decorations or dressage will be allowed on Premium Sale animals! - 8 -

9 OFFICIAL DRESS CODE: ALL JUNIOR EXHIBITIORS MUST WEAR A VEST OR JACKET AND A COLLARED, WHITE BUTTON SHIRT. THE VEST OR JACKET MUST BE OF THE APPROPRIATE COLOR OF THE ORGANIZATION THEY REPRESENT, WITH AN OFFICIAL EMBLEM OF AT LEAST 2 ½ INCHES. NO HEAD GEAR WILL BE ALLOWED.
