1 SCHEDULE Kay County Free Fair 2014 Spring Livestock Show February 24th February 27th NEWKIRK OKLAHOMA NOMINATION SCHEDULES FOR ALL SPECIES Agriculture Instructors and 4-H Leaders must have submitted all animal nominations through OYE, other than Commercial Groups nominated on November 17, 2013 and all Heifers by December 20, Commercial groups nominated on November 13, 2013 at the Newkirk Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Auction. OFFA Scholarship Form Due November 19, 2013 to the Extension Office. Heifers, Does, Gilts and Ewes will show in the breeding show only. Heifers must present their papers to the specie Superintendent at weigh-in. Ewes and Gilts will be classified at weigh-in. 2. Breeds of livestock eligible for show and show order. HOGS LAMBS STEERS Berkshire Chester White Duroc Hampshire Landrace Poland Spotted Poland Yorkshire Crossbred Dorset Hampshire Natural Shropshire Southdown Speckled-face Suffolk Crossbred Hair Angus Hereford Shorthorn Crossbred FEMALES GOATS All Breeds Wether Doe 3 All crossbred steers, hogs and lambs must show in crossbreed classes. 4 Community Group: Groups of three steers, five lambs, five goats, and five hogs exhibited by 4-H Club and/or FFA Chapter, The communities will be Tonkawa, Ponca City, Blackwell and Newkirk. 5 All animals must have been previously nominated at OYE (Oklahoma Youth Expo). **EXCEPTIONS: Carcass Animals. 2 **Commercial Groups must have been nominated on November 13, 2013 and all Heifers by December 20, Any animal not nominated by County or OYE will not be allowed to show. 6 Entry Procedures and fees: All entries must be submitted by Agriculture Instructors or 4-H Leaders by February 3, All Beef Species $14.00; All other Species $12.00 Exhibitors will have the option to take their animals home following the conclusion of their respective show. Animals need to be ready and in the sale lineup by 5:30 PM. The Awards Ceremony will start promptly at 6:30 PM followed by the Premium Sale. COMMERCIAL PEN CONTEST COMMERCIAL BEEF Pen will consist of three steers or three heifers. Animals must have been weighed and tagged on November 13, 2013 at 4 p.m. at the Newkirk Farmers and Ranchers Livestock Auction. Cost is $6.00 per pen for tags. Cattle will have a price per lb. Established by independent cattle buyer at the time of weigh-in. In February at completion of contest the cattle will be weighed again and another price per lb. established by same buyer. Placings will be established using the following: 100% on value gained.** **Value gained equals value weigh-out less value weighin. CARCASS CONTEST CARCASS STEER 1 Each exhibitor may enter three steers. 2 Carcass steers must weigh a minimum of 1000 lbs. live at slaughter. 3 Steers must be delivered Monday, February 17, :00 am. at the Tonkawa Meat Processing. Judging will be Friday, February 21, Placing of carcass will be based on: Cutability - Yield Grade - Quality Grade 5 Carcass must have High Select or better to be considered for placing. Points to be added for Yield Grade and Quality Grade as follows: YIELD GRADE QUALITY GRADE #1 = + 15 pts. High Select #2 = + 10 pts. Low Choice #3 = + 5 pts. Average Choice #4 = + 0 pts. High Choice Prime = + 5 pts = + 10 pts. = + 15 pts. = + 20 pts. = + 25 pts. Final placing equals: Cut ability percentage + Yield Grade Points + Quality Grade Points 6. Exhibitors are responsible for selling their own steer carcasses. 7. All carcass animals must be processed by Tonkawa Meat Packing. Processing orders must be made at time of delivery. CARCASS LAMB Lambs must be delivered to Tonkawa Meat Processing on Wednesday, February 19, 2014 from 8:00-8:30 a.m. so they may be weighed, slaughtered and ready for judging on Friday, February 21,2014. Purpose: To improve the carcass quality of lamb. Requirements: 1. Breed any breed or crossbreed. 2. Each exhibitor may enter three lambs. 3. Only the top ten lambs will be slaughtered. 4. Lamb carcass must have two break joints or one break joint and one spool joint. 5. Lamb carcass ribeye area must meet the weighbased schedule for minimum of ribeye area. Hot Carcass Weigh Lbs. Less than Minimum Ribeye Area Square Inches Lamb carcass must quality grade Low Choice or better. 7. Lamb carcass must have accepted minimum subcutaneous fat thickness of.1 inches. If a lamb carcass does not meet all above requirements, it will be ranked after the carcasses meeting all requirements. 8. Rankings will be determined as follows: a) Determine yield grade to the nearest 1/10 th of a grade and convert it to percentage of boneless, closely trimmed retail cuts. Yield = (6.66 X adjusted fat thickness) + (2.55 X estimated % kidney and pelvic fat) (0.05 X leg conformation #). b) Add.3 to estimated yield grade of retail cuts for each 1/3 rd grade above Low Choice. However, no additional credit will be given beyond Low Prime. EXAMPLE: A High Choice yield grade 2.5 lamb would be calculated as: Estimated yield or cuts for YG 2.5 = 46.6% High Choice QG =.3 x 2 =.6 Page 2

3 INDEX = = Exhibitors are responsible for selling their own lamb carcass. 10. All Carcasses must be processed by Tonkawa Packing. Processing orders must be made at time of delivery. CARCASS HOG 1. Exhibitor may enter three hogs. All entries will be slaughtered for contest. 2. Hogs weights will be adjusted to 230 lbs. Carcass hogs must be delivered to Tonkawa Meat Packing on Wednesday, February 19, :00 a.m. for weighing and processing. Judging will be Friday, February 21, To qualify for a high final placing, a carcass must meet minimum certification requirements of at least 29.5 length, no more than 1.5 of average back fat thickness, and at least 4.65 square inches of loin eye area on a 230 lbs. adjusted weight basis. 4. Once carcasses have met these minimum requirements, they are ranked by their percentage muscle". PERCENTAGE MUSCLE X hot carcass weight X actual loin eye area (sq. in.) 14.9 X actual 10 th rib fat dept (/) 160. EXAMPLE: Hot carcass weight 180 lbs. Actual 10 th rib fat depth.7 Actual loin eye area 5.0 sq. in (.06 x 180) + (x5) (14.9 x.7) 160 =57.36% 5. Exhibitors are responsible for selling their own hog carcass. 6. All Carcasses must be processed by Tonkawa Packing. Processing orders must be made at time of delivery. HEIFERS 1. All Commercial Heifers must be nominated for Kay County Junior Livestock Show and turned in by December 20, 2013 to 4-H leaders or Agriculture Instructors. Nominations include tag for Commercial Heifers. 2. Commercial Heifer tags will be available through 4-H leaders or Agriculture Instructors. 3. Must have registration papers in exhibitor s name to show by December 20, A copy of registration papers must be attached to nomination sheet at the time the animal is nominated. Original registration papers must be presented to Beef Superintendent at Commercial Heifer weigh-in. 4. Exhibitors may only show three heifer exhibits. Heifers must be born after January 1, The papered heifer classes will be divided into the following classes: Senior Heifers - Born Jan. 1 to July 31, Intermediate Heifers Born Aug. 1 to Dec. 31, Spring Jr. Heifers Born Jan. 1 to July 31, 2013 Fall Jr. Heifers Born Aug. 1, 2013 and after Heifers may be divided into subclasses by superintendent depending on number of entries within the class. Commercial Heifers will show according to weight. 5. Heifers must be checked in immediately following steer weigh-in. Heifers must be brought to check-in chute along with ORIGINAL PAPERS, (NO COPIES) to check tattoos. All registered heifers must have READABLE tattoos in the appropriate ears. AIMS AND PURPOSE To promote 4-H and FFA Youth work and provide initiative to keep young people striving to learn more about our free enterprise system. To promote the development of quality livestock in Kay County. To teach good sportsmanship and create a feeling of good will between all people, rural and urban in Kay County. BOARD OF TRUSTEES The Board of Trustees of the Kay County Free Fair, Inc. reserves the right to interpret the rules and regulations and arbitrarily settle all questions arising in connection with livestock show that shall be held under the management of the Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees reserves the right to amend, add to or interpret these rules as they in their judgement deem admissible. A person who violates any of the rules contained herein or special rules will forfeit all privileges and premiums and shall be subject to such penalties as the Trustees and Superintendents may order. The Board of Trustees will have the power to remove from the show any animal, from any stall or pen, if neglected by the owner. The Board further reserves the right to remove from the grounds any exhibit animal or concession of the show that may have been falsely entered or may be deemed unsuitable or objectionable, or to remove any sign, banner, identification marker of signature or advertising matter of any kind which may be deemed unsuitable or objectionable by them without giving any motive thereof. All protests must be made in writing to the Board of the Kay County Free Fair, Inc. and must be accompanied by Page 3

4 a deposit of $50. This deposit will be forfeited if the protest is not sustained. EXHIBITORS RULES 1. Eligibility: This show is limited to Oklahoma 4-H and FFA club members in Kay County. 4-H members must have reached their 9 th birthday by January 1, 2014, have a current 4-H enrollment card on file and be a member in good standing (see guidelines in Kay County Extension Office or your 4-H Leader). FFA members must have paid state dues, be currently enrolled in a vocational Agriculture class, and be in the 8 th grade or above. 2. Only 3 animals of each division may be shown by an exhibitor. The exhibitor will be limited to three males and three females of each species. Three commercial groups of cattle and three carcass animals per species. Animals of each species must meet the rules and regulations as set forth by the Kay County Free Fair Board. 3. Show animals must be kept and fed separate from other livestock. 4. All animals are to be exhibited in the ring by the owner except when the club member has more than one entry in the ring, or in case of acceptable reason for not showing. For such exception, animals must be shown by another club member or family member. Written approval from the species superintendent must be obtained prior to the beginning of the show. ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY Youth who have been declared ineligible to participate in extra-curricular activities by their local school administration will be declared ineligible to participate in this show. A. Exhibitor must be eligible the week that they show. B. If an exhibitor is ineligible to participate in the show for any reason, including rules of the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activity Association, (OSSAA), the animals owned by the exhibitor are also ineligible for the show. C. Ineligible youth who participate in the show will forfeit all show and/or sale premiums and awards; and will be subject to disciplinary action as provided by the local school policies. D. It will be the responsibility of the local school administration to notify the student s family and the show management or OSSAA if a particular student is ineligible to participate. 5. If proven that any exhibitor has made or caused to be made any false statement in regard to an animal; or if any exhibitor shall attempt to interfere with the judges in the performance of their duty, he/she will be excluded from all competition or exhibition on the grounds of the show, and any awards he/she may have received may be forfeited at the discretion of the Board of Directors. No one but Exhibitors, Judges and Show Officials will be allowed in the show ring, nor shall any advertising be done in the Sale ring. 6. Exhibitors shall not unload swine until Swine Superintendent has checked their pseudorabies test papers. A copy of test papers must be turned in to the Superintendent for Kay County Free Fair, Inc. files. All market swine exhibits in the State of Oklahoma shows shall be individually identified with an official ear tag permanently affixed to the ear; have negative pseudorabies test conducted after December 1 st, each year, and be identified on the test chart by official ear tag number; present test record at each exhibition; and after being exhibited, be kept separate and apart from all breeding swine until they are retested negative in not less than 14 days following last exhibition, or shipped direct to slaughter. SHOW AND FACILITIES *Bedding for all species: The use of woodchips for bedding material for all three species. 1. All animals will weigh in and be in their places as indicated in the schedule. 2. All females will be shown by weight except for Registered heifers. All females will be classified by classifier. 3. Official Entries must be entered by February 3, 2014 through community Ag teachers and local 4-H club leaders only. Fees must be mailed or brought to Kay County Free Fair/Junior Livestock Show, PO Box 818, Blackwell, OK and received by February 3, Any exhibitor may request an immediate scale rebalance and re-weigh of his animal if it is below or above approved show weight rules. 5. Market steers must weigh at least 900 lbs. at time of weigh-in at show. 6. Swine must weigh between lbs. at time of weigh-in at show. 7. Lambs must weigh at least 80 lbs. for the show. All Ewe lambs must have Scrapie tags in their ear to be exhibited. 8. Goats must weigh at least 50 lbs. for the show. Animals must be shown with a collar used only to control the animal. All Does must have a Scrapie tag in their ear to be exhibited. 9. Uncontrollable animals will not be allowed to show. 10. Animals must have been continuously owned and fed by the exhibitor from time of nomination date. Page 4

5 11. Every effort must be made to keep pens, alleyways and grounds clean at all times. Each exhibitor shall be responsible for the cleanliness of his/her exhibit at all times. 12. All animals will be classified by breeds. Species Superintendents or specie committees may either classify the animals. In either case, their decision is final. No protest will be accepted 13. The Showmanship Contest is open to all exhibitors. Exhibitors must show their own animals in the Showmanship Contest. All ages are as of the day of the show: Junior 9-12 years of age Intermediate years of age Senior 16 and over 14. Any medication or drugs given to any animal must be administered by an attending veterinarian. This is a market animal show and FDA regulations must be observed requiring certain drugs to have withdrawal periods before slaughter. The Board reserves the right to draw blood from any animal which a protest has been lodged against, expense of testing to be borne by the protester. Protest fee of $50 is also required. 15. Grooming of animals through the duration of the show will be limited to the exhibitor and such help as may be needed by FFA Instructor or 4-H Extension Educator, 4-H adult leaders, parents of exhibitors and siblings of exhibitor, and fellow exhibitors. Such help will be within a reasonable manner, NO PROFESSIONALS! 16. No paint or dye will be permitted on any cattle. Only clear colored coat dressing will be allowed. Any attempt to alter animal color or breed characteristics is prohibited show will be a Blow & Show exhibit All lambs will be slick sheared. No paint, powder or dyes will be permitted on any lambs. No oil, paint, powder, dyes or other coat dressing will be allowed on hogs. Only water will be permitted. 19. Misconduct on the part of any exhibitor (fighting, drinking or profanity) will be grounds for immediate disqualification of exhibitor and their animals from show. Superintendent will call on Kay County Free Fair, Inc. Board if needed. 20. Kay County follows the Junior Livestock Show no glue or paint rule on fitting of beef exhibits. 21. Family nominations will be accepted. Each exhibitor must have at least one animal in the species that they want to participate in. Within each family the exhibitors in that family will be able to switch animals if so desired, as long as they were nominated in a member of that family's name. If an exhibitor in that family is ineligible to show due to academics, etc. then those animals in that exhibitors name are also declared ineligible. BONUS SALE RULES 1. Only two animals can be sold in the Bonus Sale by any one exhibitor and only one animal in a division. Bonus sold on Carcass and Commercial pens limited to one spot per three entries. Five females of each species will sell in the bonus sale plus one for five after twenty-five. 2. All animals will be selected for sale order by species judge. 3. Exhibitors must determine which two animal bonuses will be in the sale no later than 30 minutes after the conclusion of the Steer Show on Wednesday, February 26, 2014, and notify the Kay County Free Fair Junior Livestock Show Advisory Board in writing. 4. A total not to exceed bonuses on 80 market animals, one per three on carcasses, commercial groups for each species, in the Bonus Sale. Live animal Bonuses consists of 20 steers, 20 wether goats, 20 barrow hogs and 20 wether lambs. Five females of each species will sell in the bonus sale plus one for five after twenty-five. Bonus Sale order lists are considered unofficial until verified. GROUND RULES FOR THE LIVESTOCK SHOW 1. All trash must be placed in trash barrels. 2. All bedding must be loaded on trucks. 3. No running on seats or in alleyways in the buildings. 4. Do not permit animals to enter the lobby area. 5. All Barns will be closed at 10 p.m. nightly. SCHOLARSHIPS For all graduating High School Students.. Instruction information for Oklahoma Fairs & Festivals, Jr. Livestock may be picked up at the County Extension Office Application must be turned in by November 19, Cattleman Scholarships due February 4, 2014 Extension Office.
