This year, the Extension Office will have mat board available that is directly from the State 4-H Office so it will be official! The price will be $.50/board. If interested, contact us or stop by the office. Guidelines for Photography REQUIREMENTS 1) Photos must be mounted on an 8 x 10 solid mounting surface. 2) The mounting surface should be mat board, in a color of the photographer s choice. 3) Photographs must be 8 x 10 or smaller, with no more than four photos per mat board. Mat board is a specific material, intended to keep the photo from getting bent or destroyed. It is not cardboard, foam YOU MAY CONTACT THE OFFICE TO PUR- CHASE THIS YEAR. o Mat board may be easily purchased from online retailers or contact your extension office. o Examples of online retailers that sell 8 x 10 mat board include Sears, Golden State Art, Redimat, Etsy and several others which can be found via Google. o If uncertain whether it s mat board, do the wave it and squeeze it test: Mat board is not squishy or flimsy. If it isn t light, thin, stiff, and solid, the material is not mat board. Mounting material meeting this test will be given the benefit of the doubt. NE Regional 4-H/FFA Dog Show Open to ALL 4-H/FFA exhibitors!!! Held during the Browning Homecoming. Saturday July 25th. Registration 8 am, Show at 9 am. Questions? Call Amy at 660/
4 4-H Demonstrations /Public Speaking At the Livingston County Fair Attention all demonstrators going to the State Fair On Thursday, July 16, we are asking that you sign up for a slot for our Demonstration Day at the Fair. Each member will receive a gift certificate to Wal-Mart for their efforts. Call the Extension Office at to sign up for a slot by July 10th. All members and parents Please come and support these youth on Thursday night from 1:00-6:00 pm! Judging at the Fair and Ribbon Standards A common question that comes up this time of year is, I don t understand how 4-H judges my items? First of all, 4-H uses what is called conference judging. That means that the youth speaks with a judge and talks about what was learned, the process, etc. The judge uses that knowledge along with the quality of the item to come up with a final placing. This means that identical items may receive different ribbons based on the conference judging aspect. Another important note is that items are judged using the Danish System that means they are not judged against other items, but rather against a set standard. This is why all items in a class may receive blue or they all may receive red. Below is a general guide to keep in mind for placings: State Fair Quality: Exceptional quality, ideal exhibit in nearly every manner must receive a blue ribbon. Excellent or Blue: A blue is given to those entries or members who most nearly meet the standards established for the particular class or level of performance. Excellent does not indicate perfection, but is a wide grouping indicating a high degree of achievement toward the elements in the standards for the exhibit. Good or Red: The second or red grouping indicates those exhibits or individuals who rank good in relation to the particular standards or expected achievement of the class or contest. Fair or White: The white grouping contains those exhibits or contestants who upon evaluation are found lacking and rate only average, acceptable, or satisfactory rating for the standards established. 4-H Exhibit Night ( Green Building ) Info Monday, July (see club schedule below). Held at the agriculture education building. If you have not received, your club leader should have your fair packet with registration cards to fill out in advance OR you can pick up cards that night. We will be using the conference judging feedback cards either pick up that night or stop by the office to get some. NEW THIS YEAR: Upon arrival, meet at the shelterhouse directly east of the agriculture education building. Parents are not allowed in the judging area we will have helpers to assist your child. Questions or not sure you understand everything? Contact the office, your club leader, or a 4-H family. Judging Schedule 6:00 Junior Helpers 6:00 Hams in the Jenkins Building 6:15 Dawn Sunrise Hustlers, Liberty 6:45 Rich Hill Jr. Workers, Wheeling Happy Harvesters 7:15 Springhill Go-Getters, Mooresville Motivators, Frontiers, 4-H Life, Power Clovers 7:45 Independents, Busy Bees 8:15 Double H 8:45 FFA, Hale Happy Hustlers, Hale Clover Kids, Show-Me, 9:00 Late judging Hopefully this helps explain the process of 4-H Judging. Remember, there is no shame in a red or white ribbon if all items received blue, then there would be nothing to strive for in future years. Best of luck, 4-H exhibitors! 4

Other participants from Livingston County included: Spencer Shira, Maddie Eller, Ava Gibson, Audrey Meservey, Sam Meservey, and Seth Hansen. State Trap Shoot & Archery August 22 Trap Missouri Trapshooters, Linn Creek, MO August State Archery NFAA 300 Prairie Grove Shotgun Club, Columbia, MO (3D & American 600 events are in September) Target Date to open: Registration & Scheduling via MO Online is 6 pm, June 15 Registration ends: Midnight, Monday, July 20. Registration and scheduling for the August State Shoot events will be via MO 4-H Online. Again this year, participants are to register AND select their choice of time during the online registration process. Yes, participants will have the opportunity to choose a preferred time to shoot. BUT, as last year, there are only so many pre-determined number of openings for each time slot. When that time slot is full you must select another time. This is especially critical for Shotgunners. To shoot as a full squad, at the same time, all 5 squad members must select the same time slot keeping in mind that when time slot is full it s full. So, the wise thing to do is to get together on day 1, and register as quickly as possible, so all 5 will get the same time slot. Do not put all your trap shooters (if more than 5) at the same time, because that will result in the shooters being on different fields at the same time. If shooting Archery and Trap, you must shoot archery on Sunday, August 23 - because you will be 120 miles away at the Trap Shoot on Saturday. If you delay in registering and selecting a preferred time; you may find there are no open slots on Sunday. If shooting both singles and double trap, be sure to register early AND be mindful of the time of each event. Give yourself plenty of time to shoot one event before scheduling the other. And remember, some trap fields run behind time. Give yourself plenty of time when scheduling the 2 events. There are limited number of slots for both Trap and Archery. If you want to make sure you have the opportunity to shoot, don t wait until the last minute all the slots might be taken. If all time slots are taken/reserved via registration, we believe we can create a waiting list. When/if there are enough 4-Hers on the waiting list for Trap, to justify opening another field, we will. If not enough numbers then some will not get to shoot. We reserve the right to change specified time slot, if necessary, to make efficient use of the trap fields. This is a concern only if you are one of the last 30 or 40 to register. The system records when registration is completed, so we will know who the last to register are. Checks should be written to the county and then 1 check from the county sent to the state office. If paying by credit card, that will be direct to the State 4-H Office. Updates and current information about the State Shoots will be posted to the 4-H Shooting Sports web pages when available; check it frequently. 5
