1 Laclede County 4-H Clover News University of Missouri Extension August 2016 Edition 4-H members, parents and volunteers, July has been a busy month for most 4-H members. My best count is that about 105 Laclede County youth exhibited at our county fair. Many had multiple entries. Many had champions and reserve champion projects in several different areas. It is great to see so many of our members there with their projects and livestock and signs displayed that promote Laclede County 4-H. Many members also exhibited at other county fairs with success. Our inside building exhibits are now on display at the Ozark Empire Fair and we have several members who were rewarded with Champion and Reserve Champion ribbons. We will be taking all blue ribbon entries on to the State Fair in Sedalia as soon as the OEF Fair is over. Camp was a huge success and I was so proud that Laclede County had the largest group there. Despite the rain on the next to last day, all campers had a good time and Laclede County was well represented with our group that attended. Our second annual Mid-Mo Horse Show hosted by Laclede County was a huge success. Although the first try was rained out, turnout was fantastic at the makeup date a week later. Although the 4-H arena at the Saddle Club has been used for so many 4-H events the past couple years, this was the first time it had been used for the Laclede County Mid-Mo show and all volunteers and members that helped make this happen should feel proud of that achievement. Jonetta and several volunteers also hosted our first Clover Kids Day Camp. The youngsters all had a great time and we hope to make this an annual event. There are several state events coming up in which Laclede County will be represented. State shotgun events, state livestock judging, and state fair demonstrations are some examples. Sarah Townley, a member of the Busy Bees 4-H club in Dade County, was elected president of the State 4-H Council. Her election was announced at the conclusion of the 71 st annual State 4-H Congress. In all, 233 teens ages attended the State 4-H Congress, held June 1-3 on the University of Missouri campus in Columbia. Teens participated in a variety of hands-on workshops on topics including marketing, agriculture education and leadership development. State 4-H Congress is a place where teens find positive new friends, develop leadership skills and explore possible careers as they experience life on a university campus, said Bradd Anderson, MU Extension 4-H youth development specialist. Delegates also worked to set priorities for the 36 peers they elected to represent their regions on Missouri s State 4-H Council. Townley, a freshman at the University of Arkansas, is from Golden City, Mo. She succeeds Laura Bardot of Lonedell, Mo. Claire Ludwig of Jefferson City is the new vice president. She is a senior at Helias High School and a member of the Jefferson City 4-H Club in Cole County. Blake Summers, a 4-H member in Saline County, was elected treasurer. He is a sophomore at the University of Missouri. Jordan Collins, a member of the Kids Rock 4-H Club in Scott County, is the new secretary. She is a senior at Chaffee High School in Chaffee, Mo. Other officers include Luke Walker, Phelps County, 4-H Foundation trustee; Delaney Schmidt, St. Charles County, state extension council liaison; Kenlyn Shettlesworth, Boone County, Kids Helping Kids coordinator; and Brynne Davis, Clay County, county youth liaison coordinator. The State 4-H Council represents the voice of youth for Missouri 4-H, serving as mentors and ambassadors, and playing a major role in the statewide 4-H events of MU Extension. Last year, more than 23,000 Missouri youths participated in 4-H clubs. Missouri 4-H programs reached more than 260,000 youths in State 4-H Congress is generously supported by the Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives, the MFA Foundation and the Missouri Corn Merchandising Council. The State 4-H Council is generously supported by Missouri 4-H Foundation trustee Mary Davis and Monsanto Co.
