1 Laclede County 4-H Clover News Unive r sity of Missouri Extension M a y Edition 4-H members, parents and supporters, April saw a great deal accomplished in 4-H. There were productive club meetings and a lot of great project meetings. As we start to finish up the 4-H year, I hope all the club leaders and project leaders can see a change in the youngsters we work with and how they have grown in learning and leadership this year. Two huge events are on the radar in the coming months that we need to prepare for now as we finish up end of year meetings. 4-H Achievement Day and the Laclede County Fair. Achievement Day is June 7 th. There is no reason every single 4-H member could not come and participate in at least one category. You will find the registration form available at meetings, on line and in this newsletter. If you have never participated, now is the year as a 4-H member to sign up and give something a try. If you are a leader and have never been involved in this, I encourage you to contact myself or Joanne Roberts and get with it. I have set a goal of getting at least 30 members to this event and at least 10 that have never participated before. The Laclede County Fair offers a perfect opportunity to finish off the 4-H year by showing off something you have learned in 4-H. There is a category for everyone and every project. If you have never participated, call me or Glenn or Jennifer Raef, and we will get you informed and started. We have 150 members. I have set a goal of having over 100 members show some item or animal at the fair. I am keeping track and will want to see you there. Brett and Nicole Stowe and Kim Lambeth have really put together a great 5K Run for the Clover fundraiser event for May 17. Brett has set a goal of doubling his runner count from last year. Just come out and run or walk to help support all the effort they have put into this healthy lifestyles event. Congratulations to Victoria Janacek for making it to the state level with her recognition forms. She will be interviewed in late May at State Congress to see if she will be one of the state winners. Don t miss our Livestock Achievement Day (judging and showing) on May 31, our first ever Horse Camp on June and Beef Cow Camp at Dallas County on June 12. Information on each of these is in the newsletter. You do not have to have an animal to participate in any of these events. 5 4-H County News: Thank you!! I would like to say Thank You to all who were able to come out and help with cooking and serving of hotdogs and sides to the many kids at our annual Kid s Free Fishing event. I saw many smiles on both the kids receiving and serving the food and think this is a good opportunity for our 4-H kids to learn about teamwork and volunteering. I appreciate all that was done to make this a success. We always have Kid s Free Fishing day on the first Saturday in May and my hopes are that the local 4-H clubs will be able to come and help again in the future. Again thank you for all your help. Just to let everyone know we ended up handing out 885 kids free tags for the day and probably served nearly that many hotdogs. 7 4-H Achievement Day News: Dear 4-H Families, This is one of the most exciting times of the 4-H year! Youth have been participating and learning in Project Meetings for several months. They have been preparing for Achievement Day and fair exhibits. Now, at long last, the time for Achievement Day has come! Saturday, June 7th, is the big day. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church located at 300 N. Madison in Lebanon. Attached is an application for each of your 4-H children. Please complete them and return them to the Laclede County Extension Center by May 28th. Achievement Day is one of the three key events in the 4-H year. (The others are participation in the County Fair and Recognition Night). Achievement Day celebrates achievements, determines some of the projects that go on to State and assists youth in refining some of their skills. Awards for the day are also presented during the closing ceremony. Awards for livestock judging that occurred at an earlier date will also be presented. Special activities have also been planned for your Clover Kids to learn and have fun. Each family is asked to bring a snack to share. Beverages will be provided. If you have any questions, please contact Sam Lower, Youth Development Specialist, at Be sure to submit all registration sheets to the Extension Center no later than May 28th in order that time slots can be assigned. Sam Lower, Youth Development Specialist Joanne Roberts, 4-H Council President Helpful Guidelines to Understanding Achievement Day Categories Demonstrations -A demonstration is a short show and tell about how to do something. Examples could be grooming a horse, preparing a foodstuff, or how to properly plant a flower. The presenter uses props, charts, or posters to aid as they explain a process. This process should include an introduction, the steps of the skill process and a summary. Questions will be asked when done. Public Speaking -Each member will give a speech to a judge or judges. They will be prepared ahead of time unless they enter the extemporaneous category. The public speaking category is split into five sections. They are listed on the registration form. A member should go to the 4-H website and become familiar with the rules for the type of speech they select before preparing their presentation. Fashion Revue - This category includes members enrolled in clothing, knitting or crocheting. The 4-Her will model an outfit that has either been made by the individual or purchased. There is a junior and senior division based on age. A member will need to know about the type of clothing modeled, cost, and the style and fit. Personal characteristics including poise, posture and grooming will all be judged. Personal Development- Each member may participate in this area regardless of project area. This is a short interview in front of a judge to build self-expression and confidence. Eight to ten year olds need to prepare to talk for at least one minute, eleven and older two minutes. Practice before participating and include information about yourself, your family, projects and achievements. Member Judging- Each member will select a table (area) that pertains to a project they are enrolled. Members may do more than one area. Members will make a decision based on what they have learned in that project and then tell why they made that decision. Members will learn to observe closely, develop reasoning skills and how to express themselves. Clover Kid Judging- Youngsters 5-7 will participate and no preparation is necessary. They will participate in one category of judging to learn about reasoning. They will make a craft and play a game. Page 7

9 News from Freedom Reins Club The Freedom Reins 4-H Club's meeting was called to order at 6:10 P.M. on April 8th. There were four members in attendance. Members talked about Achievement Day on June 7th and were encouraged to start gathering ideas and deciding on which categories they would like to enter. Regarding our scheduled horse show on May 3rd: The arena we had rented accidentally double-booked us, resulting in a merging of our show and theirs. Because of the merge we will be adding horseless horse, western pleasure, hunter under saddle, and more speed classes. We will only get 1/3 of the entry fees, but will still gain all profits from vendors, concessions, and our drawing table. We also plan to hand out information about 4-H, our club, and Bridges for Youth. Members worked on sponsor posters after the meeting. Our next meeting will be May 13th at 6:00 P.M. at North Park where we will have a clean-up day after the meeting of the spring we adopted. Victoria Janacek, Club Reporter CAKE DECORATING PROJECT NEWS... The cake decorating project was a great success this year. The girls had three meetings and they did a great job. The girls learned how to prepare a cake, in order to frost it and they learned basic cake decorating skills. The final meeting was on April 26th. At this meeting, the girls, who were divided into four groups made and decorated cakes as a team. We had the honor of having Barb Prock come and judge the cakes, presenting each group with a ribbon. Following the meeting, the girls personally took and donated their cakes to the Cope House and to Mercy Hospital emergency room, for their staff. The girls exhibited great leadership and team work skills in completing this group project. We will meet in June to help those that want help in preparing cakes for the fair. We look forward to next year, when Barb Prock has volunteered to teach the girls more advanced decorating skills, including working with fondant. Page 9
