1 Laclede County 4-H Clover News U niversity of M i s s ouri Extension March Edition 4-H members, parents and supporters, The winter of got us again and kept us from our monthly council meeting and several other project meetings as well. But we have rescheduled most and are pushing on to spring and better weather. Several events and meetings were completed and all things 4-H in Laclede County continue to go well. I was proud of our county sending Joanne Roberts, Aaron Wrinkle, Mackenzie Wrinkle, Carrie Sanwald, and Baleigh Raef to Jefferson City to meet state leaders and represent our county. The cooking project group represented us well at the Cope Chili Cook Off. They won top Youth Booth for the second year in a row. The sheep project group and robotics met for the first time and have follow-up meetings planned. If you are showing a market hog or breeding swine this year at the Laclede County Fair you need to visit with your club leader or myself in the next few days to get the latest. Eight members will be going to Columbia on March 15 to participate in the State Horse Judging contest. We will have a full senior and junior team. Wish them well. Shooting Sports will kick off the spring with an event on Thursday March 27 and then all fair exhibitors with animals are welcome to attend the Show Me Quality Assurance workshop Saturday, March 29th at the Extension Office. Scott Shumate and Brian McKimmey are working hard on some new opportunities for horse projects this coming year. A camp is set for June with morning sessions for this summer. Also be sure and mark Saturday, May 31 st on your calendar if you want to learn more about showing animals at the fair, or judging livestock. 3 4-H HAPPENINGS IN LACLEDE COUNTY Shooting Sports Spring Kick-off Shooting sports project members are encouraged to attend our spring shooting sports kick-off on Thursday March 27 at 4 pm. The event will be at Matt Young s High Prairie Shooting Range just off West 32 at English Road. Leaders will instruct and lead members in one of three disciplines including shotguns, air pistols, or archery. If you don t have equipment we can help provide that on site. The only expense will be for shotguns. You need to bring your own box of shotgun shells and $4 for the targets. Each member will need to have a Missouri Department of Conservation Hunter Safety card or have attended our local 4-H hunter safety education program. Save the Date... Show-Me Quality Assurance Training SMQA is a joint venture between the Missouri Department of Agriculture and the University of Missouri. 4-H members need to attend this program if they intend to show livestock at any fair or show. Members will understand good health practices, and help them understand how producers can keep consumer confidence high and reduce any misunderstandings between producers and buyers. This program will be offered for all 4-H members and any interested producers or exhibitors on Saturday, March 29 at 10 am at the Laclede County Extension office. Andy McCorkill, Livestock Extension Specialist, will present the program. Any 4-H member ages 8-13 will need to attend if at all possible if they intend to exhibit livestock. Members ages will need to attend if they have never attended this program before. Call Sam Lower at the MU Extension office for more information Photography Project...Shooting for May Meetings Calling all photography project members. We will meet at Bennett Spring State Park Nature Center 9 am-noon on May 3 for the first session. Please bring $5.00 for supplies. The second session will be 9 am-noon on May 10 at Lebanon High School. At the first meeting will include an one-hour digital photography lesson and a nature photography walk. The second workshop will emphasize editing, printing and matting photos. All participants will receive a photo matted and read for the plan! Questions? Please call Eric Adams at Clothing Expressions I Project (Conway Area) The February meeting was held Saturday, February 22 at the Project Leader's home. We began with modeling practice and then discussion about the garment to be made. We cut a material sample to use for identification and discussion of warp, weft and bias. Utilizing this knowledge, we pulled warp threads to straighten the material for the skirt and scarf. We prepared the scarf for fringing, sewed the skirt seam, learned how to make a casing for elastic and inserted the elastic. Assignments for the next meeting were to fringe the scarf and to turn up and baste the skirt hem in preparation for blind stitching the hem next time. Page 3

Laclede county 4-H and extension was well represented with members, leaders and volunteers. The group was able to meet and visit with State Representatives Sandy Crawford and Diane Franklin. They toured the capitol, heard the governor s welcome and were introduced on the house floor by Representative Crawford to the entire legislature. The day concluded with ice cream at Central Dairy. Pictured l to r Robert Smith, Rep. Sandy Crawford, Aaron Wrinkle, Baleigh Raef, Sam Lower, Mackenzie Wrinkle, Joanne Roberts, Carrie Sanwald, and Rep. Diane Franklin Food A & B Projects The Food Project members participated in the Annual Cope Chili Cook-off on February 15. There were 9 project members present as well as several parent volunteers and siblings. We met at the civic center at 9:00 am where we prepared our chili using the recipe provided by Zack Tullos. After cooking 3 batches of chili, we decorated our booth then took a well-deserved break to sample our recipe. In my opinion, ours was the best!! The doors at the Cook-off opened to the public at noon and we served chili until 3:00. We practice many skills we have learned during the project such as cutting, measuring, safe food handling, and good customer service. Our booth won the Top Youth Booth for the second year in a row! Our next scheduled meeting is April 12, 12:00-2:00 pm at Tammy McKimmey s house. We will be making biscuits, homemade jam, and a few other yummy treats. Page 6

7 The Trail Blazers 4-H Club meeting was called to order by President Zack Tullos at 10:05 am on February 8, 2014 at the Gasconade School. Tobias Sternberg led the Pledge of Allegiance and Owen Dieman led the 4-H Pledge. Audrey Long stood in as Secretary and conducted roll call. The question this month was What is your favorite summertime activity?. It was quite a change thinking about summer when it is so cold outside! The most popular summertime activities were swimming and going fishing. There were 20 members in attendance. Treasurer Abby Dieman summarized the club's financial status and Vice President Autumn Greer gave us a report from the Laclede County 4-H Council's last meeting. Noah Long, Owen Dieman, and Paul DuBose gave their oral project reports this month. Kim and Clint Lambeth were our guest speakers for February. They spoke to us about filling in our 4-H project reports and gave us several tips. There was also a toilet paper roll being tossed around (we also learned a good technique for throwing it!) to different members and whoever caught it told a different story. On April 5th we are planning on cleaning up Nebo Cemetery, such as raking leaves, picking up trash and dead branches, as one of our community projects for this year. Money was also raised by recycling cans and other unwanted metal. The proceeds will be donated to the Lebanon Humane Society and the Texas County Humane Society. The next club meeting will be held at 10 am, March 8, 2014 at Gasconade School. Submitted by Club Reporter, Audrey Long. Barn Bums Club Report We called our meeting to order on Feb. 20, 6:30 p.m. we then took attendance and dismissed the Clover Kids to go upstairs where they had fun making message tiles. We then discussed business such as what we were showing at the fair, upcoming events, and our projects. We then enjoyed a fun game of jeopardy and some yummy refreshments after our meeting. Next meeting is scheduled for March 20, 6:30 pm Submitted by Club Reporter, Emma Beal The Freedom Reins 4-H Club's meeting was called to order at 6:03 pm on February 11th. There were four members in attendance and two families interested in joining. We voted on taking a club trip to HorseFest in Springfield on March 22nd. Members also came up with a list of over 30 potential sponsors for our horse show on May 3rd. They were handed out accordingly among our members with hopes of hearing back by the March meeting. 11 4-h STATE INFORMATION 4-H Foundation Scholarships Alison Copeland College is expensive but 4-H can help! 4-H participation and involvement leads young people to explore various careers and educational options. The Missouri 4-H Foundation offers college scholarships that help 4-H members pursue their educational dreams. The scholarship guidelines and application is available on the Missouri 4-H website at Applications are due at the Extension Office by March 20th. $500 Community Improvement Grants Available to 4-H & FFA Youth Ben Gallup Developing a thriving rural Missouri is important to FCS Financial. The Shaping Rural Missouri grant program offers Missouri 4-H and FFA organizations $500 grants to implement projects that will benefit their rural communities and youth development. Last year FCS Financial awarded 17 grants throughout Missouri. Each office will have the opportunity to select the winning grant from their area. Funds will be awarded to assist club or chapter members in bringing positive change by establishing projects that make their local communities better places to live. FCS Financial encourages applicants to collaborate with other community organizations to develop and complete their improvement project. Applications are due April 15, An application and more information on the Shaping Rural Missouri grant program can be found at Grant.pdf or by calling Sarah Gehring at ext CLOVER KIDS CORNER Each month we try to provide an activity, information or other materials for leaders to share with Clover Kids. Thank You Notes Teach a Lifelong Skill Have you considered helping your Clover Kids write and send handwritten thank you notes? Teaching children to write thank you notes is a simple act that goes a long way in the development of good social skills. Here are some suggestions to help you get your Clover Kids going: Be positive. Briefly explain that the gift giver will feel good knowing the present is appreciated. Give choices and help make writing thank you notes fun. For children that don t yet write encourage them to draw pictures. Pro-vide a variety of interesting and colorful paper, pens/pencils, crayons/markers, glitter and glue. Make the handwritten note a special message from the heart. Help children understand the effort they put into creating a thank you note is just as valuable as the gift itself. Be a good example and write letters! Children learn to be courteous and responsible by watching other adults. Page 11
