Moreno 800 S. Marshall Marshfield, MO (417) Dear 4-H Family, This essay was taken from a 4-H leaders 1959 calendar that was discover at the Lawrence County office. Many things have changed since 1959, but much of this essay is still applicable today. I share this with you as a tribute to 4-H Leaders everywhere. We are just a short time away from a hectic summer of 4-H activity. It is easy to get bogged down from time to time. May this serve as a reminder of why we do what we do. Somewhere between the sternness of a parent and the comradeship of a pal is that mysterious creature we call a 4-H leader. These leaders come in all shapes and sizes, and may be male or female. But they all have one thing in common a glorious twinkle in their eyes! 4-H leaders are found everywhere at judging contests, junior fairs, square dances, and talent shows. They always are preparing for sitting through, participating in, or recuperating from a meeting of some kind. They are tireless consumers of muffins, expert at taking knots out of thread, peerless coaches, and spend hours on the telephone. A 4-H leader is many things an artist making a float for the Fourth of July, a doctor prescribing for an underfed calf, a counselor at camp, a lawyer filling out reports, and a shoulder to cry on when that dress just won t fit. Nobody else is so early to rise and so late to get home at night. Nobody else has so much fun with so many boys and girls. We sometimes forget them, but we can t do without them. They receive no salary, but we never can repay them. They are angels in aprons, saints in straw hats. Their only reward is the love of the kids and the respect of the community. But when they look around them at the skills they ve taught, and the youth they ve built, there s an inner voice from somewhere that says, Well done. Bonnie Hill, Greeley, CO Sincerely, Jeannie Moreno 4-H Youth Development Program Assistant University Extension does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability or status as a Vietnam era veteran in employment or programs.

Making kazoos What you need: Empty toilet paper rolls Rubber bands Wax paper Markers Gummed stars What you do: Show the children how to assemble their own kazoos by folding the waxed paper several times so that it covers the end of the paper roll. Rubber band it in place. Encourage the children to decorate their kazoos with the markers and stars. To test the kazoos, place the end of the roll lightly to your mouth and sing or hum. The vibration of the layers of waxed paper should make your kazoos sound great! 5 STATE INFORMATION NEED HOST FAMILIES Missouri is short of meeting our goal to host 10 Japanese youth for a 3 l/2 week period (July 23-August 18). No special treatment or travel is needed we would prefer the Japanese youth see every day life in the home. Also, we need to identify two families to host high school FLEX students from Eurasia. These students would arrive in mid August, enroll in school, and depart in mid May. English skills are good. For more information, contact Joyce Taylor at taylorjl@missouri.edu. Wildlife Habitat Management contest April 4 Each year 4-H members are challenged to learn about wildlife from a different region for the Wildlife Habitat Management contest. This year, the national contest will be in Zwolle, LA. To prepare, this year s state contest will focus on the 16 featured wildlife species of the Easter Deciduous Forest Region and the appropriate wildlife management practices. All MU Extension 4-H ers are eligible to participate in the contest, April 4, as an individual or team.
