Marshall, Marshfield, MO Angelia Ham 4-H Youth Specialist Jeannie Moreno 4-H Youth Program Assistant H Council: Ember Mikkelsen, President Melinda Leonard, Treasurer LeeAnn Wantland, Secretary Upcoming Events RATT Deadling April 1 Seymour 4-H Club April 4 Leaders Council Meeting April 7 Robotics Deadline April 8 Heartbeat 4-H Club April 12 Webster County Clover Sayings March Dear 4-H Families, 2011 As I travel through Jasper County, across Missouri, and to various points within the United States, I am always proud of the 4-H members that I travel with and those I meet in the course of my days. It is inspiring to see these young people learn from the opportunities that 4-H makes available to them. 4-H members and young leaders of today will be the citizens and community leaders of tomorrow. 4-H members make me very proud. Pride can be a good thing, and pride can be bad. The overwhelming sense of accomplishment and success that I share with 4-H and 4-H members comes from the pride that successful members demonstrate and share with all of us. This p-r-i-d-e can be described as: Politeness, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, and Excellence. Politeness is a characteristic that should describe all of us. Parents teach us to speak when spoken to, don t interrupt, hold the door for others, and don t push in line. As we practice these common courtesies, at home or in 4- H, they become a part of us. This isn t just how we act, this is how we are. I see this in 4-H members as I visit club meetings, as we take trips, and even in interview situations when a 4-H member thinks to smile at a judge and help the judge to be relaxed in the situation. Politeness shows that we care. Country Cardinal 4-H Club April 14 Respect for ourselves and others is another courtesy that comes from practicing politeness and caring. RATT Trip, Oklahoma April 16 Robotics Workshop April 16 Show Me Adventure 4-H April 18 Integrity is the practice of making the hard choices, doing what is right, and showing those around you that you can be counted on to be honest and fair. Discipline, or more correctly self-discipline, is the strength and ability to do the right thing, and to do what needs to be done. It takes discipline to set a goal and meet that goal. It takes discipline to finish projects on time, and it takes discipline to take the time to finish things correctly, not giving in to the temptation to cut corners, but putting your best effort into your work. Excellence is the result of a conscious commitment to politeness, respect, integrity and discipline. In 4-H as we strive to make the best better we encourage excellence. We may never be perfect, but we can always strive to excel. University of Missouri, Lincoln University, U.S. Department of Agriculture & Local University Extension Councils Cooperating University of Missouri Extension does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability or status as a Vietnam-era veteran in employment or programs. Through participation in a variety of projects, activities and responsibilities, 4-H members learn life skills that equip them with the experiences and the tools they need for life. Wherever they go in their lives, 4-H members can share their pride. Jeannie Moreno Jeannie Moreno Webster Co YPA

6 PAGE 6 WEBSTER COUNTY CLOVER SAYINGS FEBRUARY 2011 STATE NEWS con t Citizenship Corner Citizenship is one of our mission mandates, and a crucial part of the 4-H brand. Each month, between now and the MCIA event (summer 2011), the planning team will offer a citizenship related snippet. We appreciate your support of programs like MCIA, Legislative Academy and Youth Civic Leadership Summit, and applaud the many other citizenship opportunities you provide in the development of Missouri youth! Riots in past couple of weeks in the Middle East and Northern Africa have been on the nightly news and on the front page of newspapers across the world. These events quickly remind us that freedom is never free and the citizens of a country can make a difference in the world in which they live. We are privileged indeed to live in a country where it is not necessary to riot in the streets to have our voices heard. Our American citizenship is guaranteed by the 14th Amendment to the Constitution. Citizens pay taxes, obey the law and serve our country's military if called to do so. Citizenships means having freedom and rights, being treated fairly and respecting and helping others. Finally, citizenship is working together to do what one person cannot do alone. Webster s Dictionary defines citizenship as: 1) The status of being a citizen, 2) a: membership in a community (as a college) b : the quality of an individual's response to membership in a community. Not only are you a citizen of the city, county, state and country that you live in; but you are also a citizen of your school, church, 4-H club, and most certainly the world. So what can you do in our community to actively participate in your role as a citizen? When was the last time you talked to one of your elected officials? It is your job to tell your elected officials what is going on in your community and what concerns you have. They cannot know everything that is going on in the communities they serve. celebration. This is your opportunity to tell them what is going on and ask how you can help them. The next time you have the chance to talk to your legislators, be ready to tell them your 4-H story. Why is 4-H important to you and why it would not be okay if 4-H was no longer available. Again, if you do not tell them, they will not know. We cannot assume everyone knows why 4-H is important and how many families would be affected. Not sure when you might see them in person, then write a letter. Is there a cause that you feel compelled to be a part of? Perhaps people are raising money to build a new animal shelter, or a skate park for the local youth; this is your chance to get involved. Ask the local organizers what you can do to help. Can you pass out fliers? Can you help at fundraisers? Free help is always accepted. Have you ever heard of Kids Helping Kids? Kids Helping Kids is a program devoted to helping 4-H members and their families in times of need by providing small financial grants to 4-H members who have gone through family emergencies like natural disasters, medical emergencies or fires. Your club can give money to help keep the program going. Ask your 4-H youth specialist or youth program assistant for more information about this program. It is your responsibility as a citizen to be active in your community, school, state and even country. Remember the 4-H Pledge? I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country, and my world. Now get out there and be a citizen! Youth Pork Institute 2011 The Missouri Pork Producers are accepting applications for our Youth Pork Institute scheduled for June in Columbia. Information and application can be found at Registration due April 29, 2011 If you have any questions, please contact Diane Slater at diane@mopork.com.
