2 Volunteer Orientation 4-H works because of the adults that become volunteers. All 4-H volunteers are required to complete a one-time volunteer orientation. Volunteers may complete this requirement by attending an in-person session or online. Orientation needs to be completed before a volunteer s enrollment will be accepted. Online Orientation: Be sure to go all the way to the end of the module to where it asks your name, county, etc. If you do not, you will not be given credit for completion. 17 th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus the Cardinals give-away item for the game is a replica 1968 National League Championship ring. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-a-kind item. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office, or on the web at Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 9, Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. 4-H Camp Camp Registration Now Available! Junior Camp (ages 8-11): June 3-6 Teen Camp (ages 12-14): June 6-9 Camp has been shown to be one of the most powerfully positive experiences any young person can have! Camp provides youth an opportunity to learn skills in responsibility, communication, teamwork, and more while having fun and making new friends. Camper registration forms will be available soon on the county website and at the Extension office. Applications are due Tuesday, May 1 to your Extension office. 2

3 Natural Resources Careers Academy Want to learn about careers in natural resources? Up to 30 high school current juniors and sophomores (rising seniors and juniors, will graduate in 2019 and 2020) will be selected based on scholastic achievement and their interests in the natural world, conservation and environmental studies. Applicants must be Missouri residents. Postmark deadline for applications is April 20. Academy is free of charge. Academy dates July 8-13, Life Sciences Quest Take some time out of your summer break and learn something new with University of Missouri s Life Science Quest program! Life Science Quest is an academy for students interested in agriculture and how it impacts our daily lives. Activities include hands-on experiences in biochemistry labs and research farms; tours of various science and research industries; discussing ethical issues in agriculture; and opportunities to learn from professionals in science-related industries. Program will be July for high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. Apply online by April Missouri 4-H Foundation Community Service Grants Through generous grants from Crader Distributing and local STIHLdealers.com as well as DuPont Pioneer, the Missouri 4-H Foundation offers grants up to $1,000 with match funding for a 4-H community service project. Projects are youth-driven and provide a great opportunity for youth to serve, work and develop life skills. For more information and to apply visit State 4-H Congress May 30-June 1, 2018 Mark your calendars now and get registered for the 2018 State 4-H Congress. Registration deadline is April 15. The State Council have worked hard to plan our event this year to be different and new!!! Sessions geared toward Career/College Readiness will be offered for several different Career Pathways. You will have a choice of selecting two different sessions in the morning on Thursday. The afternoon Leadership Sessions are all new subjects. New this year, delegates will have an opportunity to interact with MU athletics through tours and possible with coaches and/or athletes. MU College of Veterinary Medicine Open House: The ONEderful Wizard of PAWS Don t miss this year s College of Veterinary Medicine Open House, Saturday, April 21 9:00-3:00 p.m.. This event is free to the public. Watch the Purina Incredible Dogs perform, tour the Veterinary Health Center and try your hand at milking a cow the old-fashioned way. There will be informational lectures, including information on how to apply to the college, free wagon rides from the Missouri Mule Team, and much more. For more information: 3

4 Kids and K-9 Camp Join us for a pawsitively great time at the 2018 Missouri State 4-H Kids & K-9 Camp June 7-9 at Camp Clover Point. A statewide 4-H camp for dog training, demos and fun. Come and learn training skills, meet new friends, and have fun with your dog! For more information go to Cost is $175 and registration opens April 1 in 4HOnline and closes May 1! Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its seventh year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years of age interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. The cost is $100. For more information, contact Patty Fisher at fisherp@missouri.edu or and be sure to download the brochure on the Missouri 4-H page at Announcing the Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program Missouri 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador Program is designed to promote 4-H and 4-H Shooting Sports. Youth selected to serve as Ambassadors will receive training that will allow them to return to their homes and advocate for the program at the county, regional, and state level. Ambassadors provide public relations support at special events such as donor/sponsor functions and also serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports Program, helping to make 4-H and the 4-H Shooting Sports Programs more visible. The Ambassador s further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. Applicants must be at least 12 years of age by January 1, 2018 to apply. It is recommended that the candidates also have at least one year left in 4-H. Application deadline line: May 15 PURPOSE, GOALS, OBJECTIVES The 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador program will provide a venue for 4-H teens to: 1. Represent 4-H and specifically 4-H Shooting Sports for public relations purposes at special events; at donor/sponsor functions and with the general public, 4-H groups, community service organizations, schools and media contacts. 2. Serve as spokespersons for the 4-H Shooting Sports program at their respective levels of participation national, regional, state, county - helping to make 4-H Shooting Sports programs more visible. 3. Further develop their skills in leadership, public presentation, citizenship, community service, public relations and team building. 4. Assist in maintaining relations with 4-H Faculty and Extension Administrators as well as past, present and future program donors and supporters. 5. Continue and expand their involvement in 4-H Shooting Sports beyond the shooting skills and competitive events. 6. Stay actively connected with the 4-H Shooting Sports program as they enter their collegiate years and further into adulthood. This Program will serve as a gateway to becoming a National 4-H Shooting Sports Ambassador. Application packets are available on the Shooting Sports Ambassador webpage 4

5 Horse Enrollment Forms Horse project members will receive a copy of the horse enrollment form in the mail. Forms are due into your local extension office no later than May 1. Your form will be returned to you with a copy retained in the extension office. You will need to keep the signatures complete and carry this information with you to 4-H horse shows. FFA members must also have this form on file to exhibit at the fair. Form: JoAnn s Fabric Partners with 4-H JOANN stores are connecting more young people to experiences where they can learn by doing, creating and making. By providing local 4-H Clubs with resources and tools to run impactful programs, JOANN will help bring the 4-H experience to more kids in need. Through this new partnership, current members, parents of members, volunteers and 4-H staff can save 15% off total in-store and online purchases every day with 4-H Rewards. JOANN will give a minimum of 2.5% of every eligible transaction to support 4-H programming. To learn more and to sign-up: Shooting Sports State Shoot Dates August 18: State Skeet Shoot at Gateway Gun Club in St. Louis. August 25: State Trap Shoot at Missouri Trap Shooters in Linn Creek. August 25-26: Archery NFAA 300 round at Prairie Grove in Columbia. September 15-16: State Shoot All Disciplines in various locations. Missouri Sheep Producers Starter Flock Program Goal: To provide a current Missouri 4-H or FFA member a grant opportunity to purchase ewes for a starter flock. Reward: Up to three winners will receive a $600 grant to be used to purchase ewes from a current MSP member and work with this member in a mentoring program. The sheep purchased may be purebred, registered or commercial stock. Applications must be postmarked by May 15. Details at Missouri 4-H Century Family The Missouri 4-H Century Family program recognizes 4-H families with long, sustained involvement in the 4-H program. Missouri 4-H Families with a combined 100 years or more of membership and/or volunteer service in 4-H will be recognized. Applications can be submitted at any time before July 1 to be recognized during the county recognition program. If your family has been involved with Missouri for 100 years you are encouraged to apply! Applications are available through the county website. 5

6 MARION COUNTY 4-H NEWS County 4-H Website: Fairbook Cover Design Contest The Marion County Junior Fair Board is holding a contest for all 4-H and FFA fair exhibitors to design the cover of the 2018 fair book. The cover should express the Marion County Junior Fair experience and will be judged on creativity, design and effectiveness in promoting the fair. Entry requirements: theme focuses on the fair, fits an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper, vertically. Can be hand drawn or computer generated in black ink. Please include your name, club/chapter on the back of your entry. Entries due by Friday, April 6 to the Extension Office. Swine DNA Cards 4-H members wishing to exhibit swine at the Missouri State Fair must submit a DNA card for each swine entry. DNA cards are available for $3.00 at the Extension Office and due back to the Extension office by Thursday, May 10. Sheep & Goat Show Stock Clinic Saturday, April 21 Brenda Schreck, MU Extension Livestock Specialist will host a Show Stock Clinic at Rockin A Arena in Palmyra. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be workshops to discover more about showmanship, daily care, grooming & animal selection. Live animals will be on site for hands-on practice with fitting demonstrations provided after lunch. Registration Fee is $10 by April 13 or $15 at the door. Concession stand will be available for lunch. Fee is due when registering at the Marion County Extension office. Sheep & Goat Nose Printing Thursday, May 31. Brenda Schreck, MU Extension Livestock Specialist will be doing nose printing for market lambs and goats that are going to the Missouri State Fair. Nose printing will be from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the show barn at the fairgrounds. Animal Pre-registration Animal Pre registration will be required again this year. All market hogs, goats, and lambs will be required to pre-register. Animal ID forms are due to the Marion County Extension Office by Thursday, May 10. Ownership deadline for these animals will continue to be May 1. All market hogs will be required to have ear notches, goats and lambs will be required to have scrapie tags. Not sure how to read those swine ear notches? Send a picture of the ears along with your registration form. Marion County Farm Bureau Scholarship The Marion County Farm Bureau Board of Directors is pleased to announce it will offer two, $500 scholarships to anyone who wishes to complete the requirements listed below. Marion County Farm Bureau is committed to the future of agriculture and more importantly, the future of our youth. Applications are available at the Extension Office and on the county 4-H website. Applications due June 1. 6

7 Shooting Sports Calendar Fundraiser Marion County will once again be selling NRA gun raffle calendars as a shooting sports fundraiser. Calendars can be picked up at the Extension Office. All money and unsold calendars will need to be turned back into the office no later than May 11 at 5:00 p.m. This is a wonderful opportunity to help the Marion County Shooting Sports program and your club earn some money. Please call the office with questions. If you are interested in purchasing a calendar, contact a shooting sports project member. Livestock Judging Day Livestock Judging Day will be held on Friday, June 15, at Rockin A Arena, Palmyra, Missouri. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. with judging beginning at 9:00 a.m. This event is the qualifying contest to be on the team to participate at State Livestock Judging on September 8, It is not required to be enrolled in the project; all 4-H members can participate. Please RSVP to the Extension Office by Friday, June 8. Club Reports Coffee Creek March 6, 2018 Turned in pizza sales and discussed that we will get together Saturday, March 24 th to make the pizzas and have a meeting afterwards. Regular 4-H meeting presented by the officers. Next meeting will be making pizzas and meeting afterwards. Kids that need to, will be doing demonstrations Submitted by Maya Bock Lucky Four-March 10-11, 2018 On Saturday March 10 we prepped all food that we needed for our Spaghetti dinner, after doing that we held a short meeting. The meeting was called to order by President Ella Goldinger. We talked about the spaghetti dinner on Sunday and collected canned foods for the nutrition center. On Sunday March 11, we held our Spaghetti dinner at the Lutheran Church of West Ely, after cleaning up we all headed to Gem City Gymnastics for a fun evening. Submitted by Noah Williams Mt. Zion March 1, 2018 Mount Zion Country Clovers met on Thursday March 1, 2018 at the FCS Financial building in Hannibal. Michelle Todd led a program on ventriloquism. Demonstrations were given by Eme Ridout, Sara Ridout, Jared Ridout, Tyler Bush, Aubrey Hillman, and Jeremy Reynolds. Old business that was talked about was working the recycling trailer, Winter Roundup Dinner and Square Dancing, and the pizza fundraiser that is in progress. Show Me quality Assurance, the sheep and goat stock clinic, and shooting sports safety meetings, 4-H day in St. Louis, Achievement day,state 4-H Congress, and public speaking academy where also talked about for new business for the club.
