Beef Weigh-In February 17, PM Alternate Date February 24, PM Echinacea is one of seven new goats born on the Terry and Helen Hettinger farm in the past couple of weeks. Benjamin and Michaela exhibit meat and dairy goats, in addition to numerous other projects. Each year, a theme is chosen for naming the new goats. 2 Show-Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) SMQA training is required by all 4-H and FFA members in order to be eligible to exhibit food animals at the county fair. Members under the age of 13 must complete two consecutive years of training to be conditionally certified. An additional year of training is required when members reach the age of 14 to be fully SMQA certified. Letters will be mailed out shortly to those members who are required to attend training in order to exhibit at Fair this year. Nancy Marie Platz was the guest speaker and explained how the Valentine s card making began Missouri Youth Grading and Judging Contest and Clinic This year s Grading and Judging Contest and Clinic will be held March 3rd starting at 8am at the Trowbridge Livestock Center on the University of Missouri Campus in Columbia, Missouri. The Contest is designed for 8th grade and older students. The clinic, designed for 8th grade and younger students, will focus on hands-on learning, working in small groups to learn more about the basics of livestock evaluation and understanding the importance of USDA grading of cattle. Registration will be $10 for all participants of the 2018 Clinic. 3 Teen Conference The State Council is pleased to announce the 2018 Teen Conference will be held March at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia, Missouri. The fun-filled, two day event (begins 12:30 pm Saturday and ends at 11:00 am Sunday) for ages is planned by your State 4-H Council teens, to promote Belongingness, Independence, Generosity and Mastery. This year s theme is Lights...Camera Leadership! and registration is open now at a cost of $179 for youth sharing a bed (with another delegate) and chaperones (sharing a room with another chaperone). The cost for youth who prefer their own bed is $229. Registration is now open in 4-H Online and will close on February 15th. Take a chance and take your 4-H experience on the road! Check out 4-H Teen Conference! 4-H Foundation Scholarships College is expensive, but 4-H can help! 4-H participation and involvement leads young people to explore various careers and educational options. The Missouri 4-H Foundation offers college scholarships that help 4-H members pursue their educational dreams. In 2018, thanks to generous support donor support, the Missouri 4-H Foundation will offer over 5 scholarships ($500-$2,500/scholarship). 4-Hers who are current high school seniors and former 4-Hers who are college students are eligible to apply. The scholarship guidelines and application are available at Applications are due to your local Extension Office by February 20th. The great news is that the scholarship form aligns with the State Recognition Forms, so if you have your recognition forms completed, your have a great start on your application! 2018 Missouri Community Service Commission Scholarships Do you know high school students who are dedicated to improving their community and looking for scholarship money to continue their education? If your answer is yes, the Missouri Community Service Commission is looking for those individuals. It is that time of the year again when the Commission recognizes eight outstanding high school student volunteers (by awarding $1,000 scholarships to each). The Commission will also honor AmeriCorps members, local community volunteers and businesses for their commitment in meeting unmet needs in the community where they live, work, and play. For more information, please visit Applications are due March 2, H Rabbit Workshop A 4-H Rabbit Workshop will be held February 10th from 10am-2pm at the Floral Building on the Macon Fairgrounds in Macon, Missouri. Topics to be covered include: Missouri State Rabbit Producers Association, ARBA (Registering and Grand Championing), National Breed Clubs, Rabbit Breeds and Types, Breed Classes (4 class and 6 class) (Buck/Doe variety), General Showing Tips, and Market Rabbits (Meat pens, fryers, etc.). Additional topics as far as Rabbit Care like: feeding/watering, naming pedigree rabbits, supplements, kindling, basic medical care and winterizing will be covered. Demonstrations will also be given on breeding (reluctant breeder tricks), grooming (nails), and tattooing (clamp and pen styles). Please RSVP to carpenters96@hotmail.com or to attend. 4 Shooting Sports Leader Certification Visit 4-H Online to sign up for the upcoming Shooting Sports Leader Certification Workshop to be held March at Camp JoOta in Clarence, MO. Registration is now open, don t delay! Registration will open February 1st for the Hunting and Outdoor Skills Leader Certification that will be held at Camp Windermere April in Roach, MO. 17th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parent, volunteers, and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19, 2018 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The Cardinals will be taking on the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15pm game. Tickets for the game will be $25 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt featuring the 4-H Clover on the back and the Cardinals emblem on the front. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. As an added bonus, the Cardinals give-away item for the game is a replica 1968 National League Championship ring. The first 30,000 fans age 16 and older will receive this one-of-akind item. Tickets for the even must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form available through your local Extension Office or on the website. Orders must be postmarked by April 9th. Tickets usually sell out before the deadline, so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. Funds raised through the raffle support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs. 4-H Day with the Cardinals has raised $77,000 to support Missouri and Illinois 4-H programs in the first 16 years. Cooper County 4-H Winter Air Rifle Cup February 10, March 10 and April 14 The Cooper County 4-H Winter Air Rifle Cup will be held at the Cooper County Youth Fairgrounds, Boonville, Missouri beginning at 10 am. Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its seventh year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H Volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years old interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17th. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, MO. The cost is $100. 5 2018 Missouri 4-H Equine Tour Join up! The 2018 Equine 4-H tour, May 21-28, will be headed west to Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado exploring the equine world for teens dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Each year s tour has a unique itinerary to help youth explore the diverse equine industry indigenous to the destinations. The 2018 tour will have a focus on English and Western performance, the rodeo and entertainment industry and visits to leading medical facilities. The itinerary will include visits to top horse ranches, dude ranches and a Colorado mountain trail ride. One of the higher educational visits will be at Colorado State University in addition to meeting nationally recognized leaders and trainers in the equine industry. The $650 tour fee includes charter bus transportation, tours, trail ride, hotels, meals, tour t-shirt, travel bag and other associated costs. The training will be held April at the Windermere Conference Center in Roach, Missouri. Participate in active learning as you become acquainted with this challenging, yet FUN project. Learn firsthand from the state instructors on how to lead a local/county Hunting Skills program. Experience various teaching activities that have proven effective for youth. Recieve answers to your questions and become part of a network of other Hunting Skills volunteer instructors. The cost is $85 and registration opens February 1st in 4-H Online. For more details check out Monthly MOVEment Activity: Balloon Soccer Materials 10-inch round balloon This activity can be played outside or indoors in a wide-open room. Youth stand in a circle, shoulder to shoulder, holding hands. Kick the balloon around the circle passing to each player in the circle. After the balloon has been licked around the circle, ask everyone to take a giant step back and kick the balloon around again (hands may need to be dropped). Keep playing until you run out of space! Encourage youth to try kicking with the other leg in the opposite direction or pass the balloon by bouncing it off their head! Clover Kids Corner: Melted Crayon Hearts 1. Preheat the oven to 250 degrees. 2. Unwrap your crayons, making sure your get all of the paper off. If you are making a solid color crayons, separate your colors into piles. If not, you can just make one big pile. 3. Next break or cut the crayons into small pieces. The smaller the pieces, the quicker they will melt. 4. Now place these crayons into the mold and fill it up about 3/4, depending on how big of a crayon you want. My mold was pretty big so we only filled it up 1/2 of the way. 5. Bake these crayons in the oven at 250 degrees for about 20 minutes. 6. After they are done, take them out of the oven and let cool completely before attempting to take them out of the molds. If you take them out too soon, they will break.
