2 Northeast Region Energizer Mark your calendars for the Northeast Regional Energizer in Macon. Youth ages and adults are all invited to joins us Saturday, February 18 for a day of workshops, activities, and lunch! The cost is $10/participant. The day will start at 10:00am and finish at 2:00pm. Registration is due Friday, February 10 to your Extension Office. Youth workshops and activities will include livestock, arts & crafts, parliamentary procedure, and improvisation. Adult workshops included: healthy living, working with diverse audiences, serving as a club or project leader, and 4-H curriculum. Shooting Sports Leader Certification Training The spring shooting sports leader certification workshop is quickly approaching! The spring workshop is taking place March 24-26, 2017 at Camp LifeChange in Clinton, MO. Registration opens within 4HOnline on February 1 and closes on March 15, or when full. The cost for the workshop is $80.00 and includes five meals, overnight lodging (one or two nights), and workshop materials. Workshops usually fill up before the deadline so do not delay! For more information about the workshop, please check out our website at: Hunting & Outdoor Skills Leader Certification Workshop Here is your chance to become certified to teach the 4-H Hunting and Outdoor Skills project within the Shooting Sports program. The workshop will take place March 31- April 2, 2017 at the Windermere Conference Center in Roach MO. Registration opens within 4HOnline on February 1 and closes on March 15. Registration is limited so do not delay. The workshop covers topics such as, wildlife identification, firearm selection, plaster casts of animal tracks, Dutch-oven cooking, simulated hunting and shooting actives and much more! For more information, please click on the following link: Missouri Youth Grading and Judging Contest and Clinic We are pleased to announce this year s Missouri Livestock Judging and Grading Clinic, our 29 th year at the University of Missouri! This year s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 4. The contest is designed for 8th grade and older students. The clinic, designed for 8th grade and younger students, will focus on hands-on learning, working in small groups to learn more about the basics of livestock evaluation, understanding the importance of USDA grading of cattle, and even taking a field trip to Mizzou s USDA inspected meat plant to learn about the end product. Co-sponsored and coordinated by the University of Missouri, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Advisory Team. 3 FCS Financial Scholarships FCS Financial believes in the future of our next generation. For that reason, the Board of Directors began the FCS Financial Scholarship Program in 2004 to support higher education for children or grandchildren of FCSF customers. Each year up to 35 scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each are provided to eligible Missouri high school seniors. Since its inception, more than $412,000 has been awarded through the scholarship program. The application requires information on school activities, volunteer, and work history. Scholarship applications are due March 1. Club grants are also available, due April 1. Ag youth funding is also available for qualifying 4-H projects. For more information: Show Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) Show Me Quality Assurance certification is required for all livestock project members (beef, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, rabbits) to be eligible to show at the county and state fair. Members can complete their certification by attending an upcoming training or through the on-line training module. Certification must be completed by June 1. Courthouse, Palmyra April 18 7:00 p.m. Mexico 4-H Center, Fairgrounds Online training: Missouri 4-H Foundation Scholarships College is expensive but 4-H can help! 4-H participation and involvement leads young people to explore various careers and educational options. The Missouri 4-H Foundation offers college scholarships that help 4-H members pursue their educational dreams. In 2014 thanks to generous donor support, the Missouri 4-H Foundation will offer approximately 54 college scholarships ($500 - $2,500/scholarship). 4-Hers who are current high school seniors and former 4-Hers who are college students are eligible to apply. The scholarship guidelines and application is available on the Missouri 4-H website at Check with your local Extension office for the local application due date. Applications are due to your Extension Office by Friday, February 24 Check out the list of scholarships on the 4-H scholarship website and apply! The scholarship application format is almost identical to the 4-H Missouri Recognition Form (MRF) format. If you complete the MRF form, you ve completed most of the narrative for the scholarship application, too. 3

4 4-H Move Across Missouri Tis the season for 4-H Move Across Missouri (MOVE)! Enrollment for new and re-enrollment for current MOVErs begins January 1, MOVE promotes physical activity and encourages youths to engage in a broad range of activities such as walking, biking, running, swimming, dance, taekwondo, gardening and more. Using a paper tracking system found on the 4-H website at: youth and their families can log the number of minutes they accumulate throughout the year and during the competitive component of the MOVE program (scroll to the bottom of the website page and click My Move Activity Log ). Record keeping through the paper tracking system is important because the competition period will be from February 1 to April 30. Youth and families will submit their total number of minutes logged and activities (basketball, running, chores, etc.) throughout the 12-week competitive period between May 1-15 in 4HOnline. To participate: enroll in the Move Across Missouri (MOVE) project (HF775) through 4-H Online, participation in 4-H MOVE does not count towards your county project limits. 4-Hers and adults can register for the competitive event as individuals and/or as part of a team. An individual MOVEr may also be a part of a team. A team can consist of a family or members of a 4-H club or group. MOVE awards will be provided Missouri 4-H Equine Tour Cowboy Up! The 2017 Equine 4-H tour, May 22-28, is headed to Oklahoma and Texas exploring the western equine world for teens dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Each year s tour has a unique itinerary to help youth explore the diverse equine industry indigenous to the destinations. The 2017 will have a focus on the western performance and rodeo industry with visits to leading medical facilities, tours of top performance quarter horse ranches including the Lazy E, the Remington Horse Racing Track, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Fort Worth Stockyards. Visits to higher education institutions such as Northeastern Oklahoma College, Oklahoma State University, will be included with additional opportunities to meet nationally recognized leaders and trainers in the western equine industry. The $600 tour fee includes charter bus transportation, tours, hotels, most meals, tour t-shirt, travel bag and other associated costs. If your answer is yes, the Missouri Community Service Commission is looking for those individuals. It is that time of year again when the Commission recognizes eight outstanding high school student-volunteers (by awarding $1,000 scholarships each). The Commission will also honor AmeriCorps Members, local community volunteers, and businesses for their commitment in meeting unmet needs in the community where they live, work, and play. 5 Northeast Region Field Day If you enjoy playing outdoor game such as volleyball, relay races, and tug-of-war, sign-up with your team today! Join the Northeast region for a field day, Saturday, April 8 at the Macon County Fairgrounds, where counties will face each other with some friendly competition. Ideal teams will have 10 members. Cost is $10 a team. However, if you have too many people? Or not enough for a team? Do not worry, sign-up either way and everyone will be included. Sign-up your team today! Team registrations are due by Friday, March 24. Registration forms are available on the county 4-H website. Mizzou Trap Academy The Mizzou Trap Academy is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to learn skills in a competitive, constructive and fun environment. In combination with shooting, all participants will gain information on programs, scholarships, and ways to advance collegiate study opportunities in Natural Resource Recreation Management, Recreation Management and Sport Management. Shooters will be selected on their active and future pursuit of competitive shooting and interest in higher education. Squads will be selected providing a cross-section of skills, scores, and passion for shooting. The 2017 Mizzou Trap Academy is set to take place on July at Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports and Mizzou campus and will be open to 20 eligible shooters. Applications are due April th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 20 for the 16th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The National League Central Champion Cardinals will be playing the San Francisco Giants in a 6:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office, or on the web. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 10. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. 6 MONROE COUNTY 4-H NEWS County 4-H Website: Making the Best Better Please submit your Camp Counselor Applications by February 3. Steer Weigh Day February 18 th Mark your calendars for this year s Steer Weigh Day on February 18 th at the Paris Veterinarian Clinic, starting at 9:00 a.m. SMQA March 8 th 4-H Building, Paris, 7 p.m. If you are enrolled in any livestock project and will be exhibiting your livestock at the 2017 Monroe County Fair, you need to take your SMQA training. You need to have 2 training sessions before you are 14 years old and one training session after you are 14. Letters will be sent home next week to those who need to receive their training. Those who need to attend the training are: Braylin Brunkhorst, Cole Dowell, Payden Crain, Erin Heinecke, Maddie Heinecke, Khloee Hendren, Chase Kendrick, Bryce Wade, Aubrey Youse, Andrea Callison, Logon Trivette, Kelsie Wilson, Wyatt Wilson, Abbie Thomas, Katie Thomas, Connor Eckman, Makenzie Dodge, Emma Ashenfelter, Kennedy Ashenfelter, Gage Hatton, Makayla Hayes, Aidan Mitchell, and Christine Mozingo. Cover Contest! The Cover Contest is on for the Fair Book Cover for the 2017 Monroe County Fair! Bring/send your drawings to the Extension Office by Friday, February 17. The drawings can be hand drawn or computer generated. They will be voted on at the February Fair Board meeting, and the winner will be notified. Good Luck to all! Northeast Regional Representative Energizer Feb Macon Hi, everyone! My name is Ashlyn Peterson and I am currently serving on the Missouri 4-H Council as a Regional Representative from the Northeast Region. My fellow representatives and I have been busy planning the annual Northeast Regional Energizer on February 18 in Macon. The application is on our County s website and they are due to the Extension Office by February 10. It's going to be a day full of games, good times, new people, fun workshops, and food! We have some awesome workshops and games planned, so we'd really love for you to join us. It's an awesome opportunity for youth and their parents to learn more and get more involved with 4-H. It is my personal goal to have at least 8 youth from Monroe County participate! If you have any questions feel free to me at ashlynp1999@hotmail.com! 7 Achievement Day March 10 and 11, 9 a.m. Paris Elementary The 4-H Achievement Day offers a wealth of experiences for 4-H members and their families. It s a time to show off your skills and what you have learned. Pre-registration is required for all events. The registration form in on our website and is due by Friday, March 3 rd to the Monroe County Extension office. If you are unable to participate on Saturday, March 11, with an excused absence, demonstrations and speeches will be recorded Friday evening. You must indicate on your pre-registration form that you will be participating Friday evening. Friday, March 10, videoing starts at 5 p.m. (if you are unable to be present on Saturday). There are no restrictions on the definition of an excused absence, therefore family and non-school sports are now allowed. However, members must still pre-register by the deadline and submit an absentee form to be given an excused absence. If you will be unable to participate during Achievement Day or record your presentation the night before and would like to be considered to participate with your demonstration at the State Fair or compete at the State Public Speaking Contest, with an excused absence, you may present your demonstration or speech at the March 22 4-H Council Meeting at 5 p.m. If there are spots available, your presentation will be considered for the State Fair or State Public Speaking Contest. Members must still pre-register and submit an absentee form by March 3. If you are not able to participate in Achievement Day and would like to give your demonstration or speech to meet the completion requirements for the year, but are not interested in state level participation, you may contact the Extension Office to schedule a time to present no later than May 31. On Saturday, March 11, sign in begins at 8:30 a.m. in the cafeteria. All members must be checked in by 12:00 p.m. Table setting and collections must be set up by 9:00 a.m H Camp June Join us this summer for H Camp at Camp Coburn on the beautiful Mark Twain Lake in Florida, Missouri. Look for the application on the website. The Leadership members will report on June 19th at 3:00 p.m.; regular campers report on June 20 th between 3-5 p.m. Clover Kid Day is June 22 nd starting at 8:00 a.m. All campers are dismissed around 11:00 a.m. on June 23 rd. 8 Club News The Madison 4-H Club held their December meeting on Sunday, December 10 th, 2016 at the Madison Lion s Den. The meeting was called to order by club president Ashlynn Peterson. Pledges were led and roll call was taken by stating what you wanted for Christmas. Abbie Thomas and Emily Buck read the secretary s report and Katie Thomas gave the treasurer s report. There were brief fair board and 4-H council reports given by Beth Clampitt and Tina McGee. In old business, the club enrollment for the New Year is due by December 31 st via 4-H online. In addition, the Clovers were passed out to families to assist in project registration. All members attending ham curing in December reported on their project and what their favorite part of the day was. A motion was made, seconded, and approved by the club to hold the January meeting at 4pm on Sunday, January 8 th, A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. After the meeting was adjourned, the club partook in fingers foods provided by each member and had a gift exchange between members. At the conclusion of the gift exchange, all members travelled to Jones Care Center to sing carols and pass out gifts to the residents. The meeting was called to order by club president Ashlynn Peterson. Johnathon Kinyon & Karlie McGee led pledges. Roll call was taken by stating what your favorite Christmas gift was. Emily Buck gave the secretary s report and a motion was made and seconded to accept the report. Katie Thomas gave the treasurer s report and a motion was made and seconded to accept the treasurer s report. In old business, dates were discussed for the Teen Conference. In new business, dates were discussed for the Regional Representative applications, the Northeast Regional Energizer, bacon curing, & SMQA training. The fairbook cover contest was discussed and the date for steer weigh day was given. Due dates for camp counselor and camp applications were discussed. A motion was made by Mallory Griewe and seconded by Scotty McGee to pick-up trash after the Wheeler Auction on January 29 th. Austin Thomas recommended getting your flu shot for the health & safety tip. The club elected to hold their next meeting on February 5 th at 4pm at the Madison Lion s Den. Members will meet at 3 pm prior to the meeting to make Valentine s Day cards for the residents at Jones s Care Center. A motion was made and seconded to adjourn the meeting. Interviews for regional representative will also be at the energizer Registration forms are due February 10 th to your county extension office State Council Update Applications for State Council Executive Committee (President, Vice President, etc.) have been turned any Regional Representative currently on Missouri State Council who wanted to apply December 30th. The State Council will vote on two candidates to run for each position and officers will be selected by delegates the 2017 Missouri 4 H State Congress. Teen Conference Committees have also been gathering items for workshops at Teen Conference and are finalizing plans for each workshop. 10 Love is in the Air This fun Valentine s Day craft will be a hit at your next 4 H Club meeting Multicolored Heart Crayons Materials Needed: Old crayons, a heart shaped heat resistant candy mold, cookie sheet, oven, adult supervision Step 1: Remove the paper covering from your crayons Step 2: Cut them up into little pieces, about half an inch in size Step 3: Place different colors into the candy mold until molds are full Step 4: Bake at 230 degrees (Fahrenheit) for 15 minutes. Step 5: Wait to cool then pop them out of the mold for a unique gift for your Valentine February Featured 4 Her: Tanner Ellison, Knox County An eleven year member of the County Liners 4 H Club in Knox County, eighteen year old, Tanner Ellison has dedicated his youth to a successful 4 H program. Tanner is actively involved in his club and community from serving as his 4 H Club President and 4 H/FFA Fair Board representative, as well as participating in FFA, National Honor Society, Student Council, Missouri Boys State and FBLA. He has shown livestock at the county, district, state and national levels in Beef, Swine and Poultry projects. Tanner is a role model for the younger 4 H members, recently sharing his knowledge of livestock projects during his county s National 4 H Week Project Night. This fall, he went on the air during a morning radio show to share his 4 H experience with the public. He is no stranger to community service and always willing to volunteer in different areas!
