2 National 4-H Week National 4-H Week will be celebrated October 1-7, Work with your club to make plans to celebrate this week and share the value of 4- H with your community. All 4-H members are encouraged to wear a 4-H shirt at least once during this week and share their experiences with friends and classmates. Theme this year is: TRUE LEADERS. 4-H grows confident, capable, and caring kids with the life skills to thrive in today's world and succeed in their boldest dreams for tomorrow. During 4-H week and throughout the year, share your personal story about how you have grown through 4-H. You are encouraged to use #TrueLeaders in any social medial posts that you do during 4-H Week and after. National 4-H Conference Are you interested in government, public policy, or working with others to solve a problem in your community? National 4-H Conference may be the place for you. It is the premier professional and leadership development event for 4-H members (15-19). While at National Conference you will work with other youth to create solutions to some of today s social problems such as distracted driving, childhood obesity and others. You will then have the opportunity to present your ideas to government agencies that can put your ideas to work such as the National Institute for Health, the National Traffic Safety Board and others. You will learn effective ways to advocate for an issue and can bring these skills home to your local community. If you are interested in this opportunity you will need to complete the Level 3 State Excellence Award form, answer an additional four questions about your Citizenship experiences and if selected for Regional and/or State judging prepare presentation about a current topic. Youth may only participate in this conference once. You may continue to apply as long as you are still age eligible. Expeditionary Skills for Life Expeditionary Skills for Life is a project of 4-H National Headquarters, NASA Headquarters and Johnson Space Center. A series of NASA videos and youth educational activities were created relating to NASA crew training and 21st century youth skills. These were created to coincide with Peggy Whitson s mission on the International Space Station in Peggy is an Iowa 4-H alumna who helped to create the NASA Expeditionary Skills crew training. The videos and activities can be found on NASA s website. Outbound Exchange Opportunity Just as 4-H goes beyond our doorstep and your county line, it also goes beyond our nation s borders. 4-H Global Education contributes to understanding people of the world through hosting, travel experience, project and activity enrollment for individuals and clubs. Opportunities for 4-H families provide insight into the world in which we live by participating in some phase of Global Education. Opportunities for youth at least 12 years old are available this coming summer. In the summer of 2018, exchanges will be going to Japan, Finland, and Costa Rica. 3 Managed Care Coverage for 4-H Membership Dues Youth covered by Managed Care plans, also known as Missouri Medicaid/MO HealthNet, ate eligible to have their membership in one afterschool program or club paid by their insurance company. This includes membership fees for 4-H Clubs! If your member(s) are covered by one of these plans: 1. Call the Members services number for your insurer and request a voucher for each child. a. Aetna Better Health of Missouri: b. MissouriCare A WellCare Company: c. Home State Health: The insurance company will verify eligibility and send a voucher in the mail with a red or blue stamp on it. 3. Sign and date the voucher form and send the original form to your County Extension Office 4. Youth insurance company will pay for your child s member in 4-H. 5. When you enroll through 4-H Online, select the pay by club/check option as you finish up enrollment. Do not pay with a debit or credit card, refunds will not be provided. America s Farmers Grow Communities It s time to grow again! For the fourth consecutive year, America s Farmers Grow Communities SM, sponsored by the Monsanto Fund, will offer local farmers the chance to win a $2,500 donation to support their favorite non-profit organizations. Now through Nov. 1, eligible farmers can enter for a chance to win $2,500 that can be directed to your organization. Rural community members are encouraged to support local organizations by suggesting an idea or initiative that deserves funding. Community members can plant their ideas online and eligible farmers may review the ideas and consider them in their application. Encourage farmers and community members to support your organization at americasfarmers.com/grow-communities/ The Monsanto Fund will select one winner at random from each of the eligible counties and announce winning farmers and designated nonprofits in January Year Key Award Reunion Were you or someone you know a recipient of the Key Award in 1967 or earlier? 4 MONROE COUNTY 4-H NEWS County 4-H Website: State Fair Projects: Back Home Projects that represented our county during the State Fair are back home. Please stop by the Extension office to pick up your project(s) between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. End of Year Completion and Awards As summer winds down, it is time to start thinking about Year End project completion and award forms. All county forms are due Tuesday, October 10 (deadline extended). To be in Good Standing for the program year: - Members are required to submit a completed project record form. A member only needs to submit one project record form, regardless of the number of projects they are enrolled in. o There is a separate project award form for shooting sports and ham curing. Failure to submit a completed project record at the end of the 4-H program year will cause the member to not be in good standing the following 4-H year. This means that the member will not be eligible to participate in county, regional, or state contests, and will not be eligible to sell at the county fair. To receive a Member Year Pin - Must attend one-half of the club meetings. Some Clubs have stricter requirements, those requirements supersede this rule. - Complete at least one project, complete six hours of instruction. - Submit one (1) completed Project Record form, complete with appropriate signatures, to the Extension Office by September 14. To Receive Project Medals and be considered for county awards: - Complete a local and county speech, power point presentation, or demonstration - Submit a completed Project book (refer to your county handbook for complete requirements) - 4-H Members 14 years old and over also need to complete a Missouri Recognition form. Forms are available on the county website. Clover Kids Pin - Attend half of club meetings. Adult Project Leader and Teen Leader Certificate - Must have provided six hours of instruction. - Complete Project Leader Record, fill out, sign and turn in to Club Secretary or Extension Office All end of year award forms are due by Tuesday, October 10 to the Extension Office. 5 Additional Award Opportunities Additional awards are available to apply or nominate someone for. Some awards must be submitted through the club leader. If you would like to nominate someone, contact your club leader. Applications and nomination forms available on the county website. - Osbourne Scholarship: $100 scholarship for a senior that graduated in Club Health Award: for a club s work in setting and achieving health goals. - Alumni Recognition: To recognize a form 4-H member and/or volunteer for their continued support and commitment to 4-H and the community. - Leader & Newcomer Volunteer Award: Recognizing an outstanding community club or project leader - Friend of 4-H: Individual or business outside of 4-H that makes a significant contribution to the 4-H Program. Club Records due October 10 All club records are due on Tuesday, October 10 (deadline extended) to the extension office. This includes club scrapbook, secretary book, and treasurer book. Please also submit a community service log to document club activities and be recognized for your hard work! All of these forms are available through the county website. County Shirt Design It s that time of year again, to start looking toward the new 4-H year and a new county shirt! All 4-H members are encouraged to submit designs, hand drawn or computerized, to the Extension office by Tuesday, October 10 (deadline extended). Family Fun Night Save the Date Join us on Saturday, November 4 for a Family Fun Night at the Paris Elementary School. This will be an evening for current and prospective 4-H families to talk with club leaders, project leaders, learn more about 4-H camp, enroll through 4-H Online, and more! Stay tuned for more details! Recognition Night Save the Date Mark your calendars to celebrate the hard work and accomplishments of our 4-H members and volunteers during the annual Recognition Night, Sunday, November 5 at the Paris High School. 8 Club Reports Madison - June The Madison 4-H Club held their June meeting on June 11, 2017 at the Madison Christian Church pavilion. The meeting was called to order by Vice-President Peyton Griewe. Pledges were led by Mallory Griewe & Karlie McGee. Roll call was answered by stating your summer plans. The secretary report was read by Emily Buck. A motion was made by Austin Thomas and seconded by Maddie Breid to accept the secretary s report. Fairboard and 4-H Council representatives provided reports on each committee. In old business, the club discussed the upcoming 4-H camp and club leader, Tina McGee, reported on the bake sale held in May. In new business, club families signed up to work the food stand and exhibit hall during the Monroe County Fair. The club elected Ashlynn Peterson, Connor Jones, and Karlie McGee was fair royalty candidates. Pre-registration forms for all exhibits were handed out. The club elected to hold a quick meeting on July 2 nd to hand out exhibit tags for fair exhibits. The meeting was adjourned. Madison July The Madison 4-H Club held a quick July meeting on July 2 nd at the Madison Christian Church meeting. During the meeting, exhibit tags were handed out, food stand and exhibit hall schedule was reviewed, and dates for royalty interviews were discussed. Due to the holiday weekend, the meeting was adjourned so that everyone could enjoy the Fourth of July. Mark Twain August On Sunday, August 6, 2017 members of the Mark Twain 4-H Club met at Florida Presbyterian church. A brief meeting was held with 12 members, 8 leaders and 2 guests present. Members answered roll call with if they are going to the Missouri State Fair. Congratulations to everyone on the Monroe County Fair exhibits, exhibiting and helping where needed. A reminder that project leader forms due date is September 1 st. The project forms record book due date is approaching in October. Mary handed out information about the end of year completion and awards; 4-H award application process; examples; and 4-H project forms. Everyone should start thinking about projects for the new year which starts October 1 st. A design contest for the enrollment shirts deadline is September 15 th if anyone is interested in submitting ideas. Save the date for Family Fun Night on November 4 th at the Paris Elementary. More information to come. Recognition Night will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2017 at 5:00 pm with Awards starting at 5:30. It will be held at the Paris High School and everyone is asked to bring a snack/finger food. The pool party for August is trying to be rescheduled. Now is the time if you know of someone wanting to join 4-H to bring them to the meeting or pool party, before the new year starts. The next meeting will be held on September 10, 2017 at 4:00 pm. We will be picking up trash before the next meeting. During the September meeting we will introduce the slate of officers. A health tip was given by Dawson Bross and a safety tip by Ryan Breid before the meeting adjourned.
