We prefer that they have a USA family experience rather than vacation/travel experience just what your family would be doing at home during the time they are here. Their English skills are limited but there are many ways to communicate other than just verbal. For older 4-H members, we have the Academic Year Long exchange these students arrive in late July/Early August from Japan, Korea and Eurasian countries to enroll as a Junior in our public high schools. Their English skills are very good and they are motivated to be a good ambassador for their country. Contact me if you would like more details on this opportunity. 5 Contest Day Let s Prepare! Don t Procrastinate! March 11 from 8:30am to 1:00pm for Clinton County at the Plattsburg Middle School, March 25th for DeKalb County at the Oak Christian Church from 9am to 12pm. Caldwell County TBD. Registrations due March 8th for Clinton County, March 23rd for DeKalb and Caldwell TBD Hello 4-H members, are you ready for Contest Day? At Contest Day, all members will have the opportunity to enter and be judged on Public Speaking, Demonstrations and Personal Appearance. By separating these contests from Achievement/ Exhibit Day, it is hoped that youth will feel more comfortable and have more time to spend on each activity. Remember, ALL 4-H members including Clover Kids are encouraged to participate in at least one event for Contest Day! Just remember to choose a topic that you are interested in and relates to one of your projects. Demonstrations are a lot like Show & Tell. You pick a topic/subject to explain how it is made, or how to use it, and then continue to tell your audience step by step the instructions on how to accomplish the completed task. Why give demonstrations? A demonstration helps others learn how to do something useful, perhaps in an easier or more practical way. Demonstrating is one of the best methods of teaching others, because it involves visual and verbal presentations at the same time. Demonstrations benefit 4-H members by helping to: Develop self-confidence Learn to express ideas clearly Ability to spontaneously answer questions Acquire subject matter knowledge Hints & Helps Posters can be a help. Use a poster to emphasize the main points. The poster should be planned after the demonstration is outlined and practiced. Make sure the letters are big enough and clear enough that they can be read from the back of the room. Practice is important. It can help work out the easiest way to arrange the materials. Do things in order, explain every action, know the subject, have all the equipment needed and give reliable information. Appearance. We encourage members to wear clothes that are suitable for what they are demonstrating. Being neat and clean is always appropriate! Time limits. Be careful if your category has a time limit. Do not be penalized by going over your allotted time! DeKalb County Family Fun Night: Join us March 11th at the Maysville School from 6pm-9pm, for games, food and good times with 4-H ers from all over the county. Please bring clean shoes for the gym floor, prizes for bingo. Also snacks and drinks to share with all. University of Missouri Extension 4-H Youth Development Clover Connection 5

9 2017 Missouri 4-H Equine Tour Cowboy Up! The 2017 Equine 4-H tour, May 22-28, is headed to Oklahoma and Texas exploring the western equine world for teens dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Each year s tour has a unique itinerary to help youth explore the diverse equine industry indigenous to the destinations. The 2017 will have a focus on the western performance and rodeo industry with visits to leading medical facilities, tours of top performance quarter horse ranches including the Lazy E, the Remington Horse Racing Track, the Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Fort Worth Stockyards. Visits to higher education institutions such as Northeastern Oklahoma College, Oklahoma State University, will be included with additional opportunities to meet nationally recognized leaders and trainers in the western equine industry. Nicole Bricker, Equine Tour Alum and second year MU Veterinary School student, reflected upon her experiences: I really enjoyed going on the equine tour each year to learn about the horse industry across the state of Missouri as well as several other Midwestern states. The trips are a fun and exciting way to learn more about the horse industry, the many different disciplines, and equine business sectors. The MO 4-H Equine trip was one of my absolute favorite state level activities. Ashley Bauer, 2013 Missouri State Fair Queen, Graduate Student Equine Studies William Woods University and 4-H Equine Tour Alum summarized her feelings about the tour s value: The 4-H Equine Tour opened my eyes to all that the equestrian industry truly has to offer. Not only did I make lifelong friends, I made connections throughout the nation with potential employers and experienced various equestrian opportunities. Megan Brackenridge, 4-H Equine Tour Alum, MU Alum and employee at Lazy E Ranch shared her thoughts about the tour: I m a proud 4-H alumni who attended the first equine tour, and it turned out to be one of the best decisions I could have made during my years in 4-H. By visiting each location, I was able to see how much the equine industry is intertwined, and the possibilities that were available. The two tours I attended went above and beyond expectations. There are so many opportunities out there, and it offers such an amazing chance to see and hear from the many facets of the equine industry. My personal story is rooted from my experience with this tour, and I always recommend applying because this is a great chance for 4-H er s to learn by doing The $600 tour fee includes charter bus transportation, tours, hotels, most meals, tour t-shirt, travel bag and other associated costs. Applications are available: The fifty tour seats typically fill prior to the March 1 deadline. To avoid disappointment, submit complete application packet early! Questions? 11 Wow...time to flip the calendar to a new year! For me as I m sure with most of you I can t believe how quickly life happens! It was just yesterday I was the 4-H youth member enjoying Christmas caroling and ice skating parties around the holidays or the 4-H mom taking my own children to 4-H caroling and ice skating parties! Now I m the 4-H staff helping you, our families, shape your precious 4-H memories. I wouldn t want to change a thing! As we pass through this season, we typically reflect upon are accomplishments and unfinished projects from the past year. Isn t it great we can turn that calendar page to 2017 with anticipation and resolve to create more great memories and setting new goals! Let s also take a moment to appreciate the great life skill we help our 4-H youth to develop during this season of reflection. The concept of self-reflection is at the core of the 4-H club program delivery model. Guiding youth toward reflecting on self is inherent in 4-H Record Books (yes...that s those pesky Missouri Recognition Forms! ) club based activities and youth leadership development components of programming, but the largest opportunity for growth through self-reflection is within the context of a strong youth-adult partnership. Wow...what a strong reminder of the value and opportunity to thank those wonderful caring adults creating their role in our 4-H world! I have updated the tagline at the bottom of this page to include the six C s identified in the Tuft s Study of Positive Youth Development which help youth program develop into successful and thriving adults. These are great reminders for why we do 4-H! Reflect upon what we did, look forward to our new goals, and take the time to reflect as to how we are Making the Best Better throughout the year! Enjoy that great satisfaction during your reflection in how WE make a difference through 4-H in our clubs, communities, country and world! Looing forward to our 2017 journey!...working together to help youth become competent, confident, caring, capable, connected and contributing citizens. Clinton County Extension Office P.O.
