The Saline County Spot Newsletter A Saline County 4-H Youth Development Publication Quality Tip #2: Engage Youth Voice Research tells us that one of the best ways to engage young people in programs is to provide multiple opportunities for them to have a voice and choice in decisions that matter in their communities, their overall programs and their daily activities. Organizations that effectively engage youth voice do the following practices: Honor, ask for and engage youth wisdom Provide ample opportunities for young people and adults to share control and decision-making Understand that youth voice is a way of operating an organizational culture and philosophy that goes beyond one leadership program offering Go beyond just listening and build real action around youth voice Identify opportunities for voice and choice within each daily activity, across sessions, throughout programs and organization-wide Create space, commit resources, provide support and promote opportunities for youth voice Understand the positive outcomes of partnership for young people, adults, organizations and communities Youth voice can happen at many levels within activities, at the organizational level and beyond the organization. Many exciting opportunities exist that involve youths in government or in communities. Young people can lead and mentor other young people, share control and decision-making with staff, and have many chances to make choices about what they do and how they do it. Four keys to youth engagement and giving voice Support Opportunities Space Resources

2 Clover Kids Corner Yarn Eggs Materials Water Balloons Yarn (Any color of your choice) Mod Podge or White Glue Jars or other bases to hold your eggs while they dry Directions Blow up as many water balloons as you want. Check out the shape and size and reshape them by gently squeezing the balloon a little until it is egg shaped. Coat the balloon with a thin layer of glue or mod podge. Then lay the end of one skein of yarn on the balloon and wrap the yarn around the balloon until it is nicely covered. Wrap the yarn so the balloon is covered randomly or in a pattern. The more yarn you use the sturdier your finished egg will be. When the balloon is covered to your satisfaction with yarn, apply a generous coating of glue or mod podge. Set the balloon on a jar or other base and let it dry. Let them dry completely, approximately hours. When the glue is dry, pop the balloons and remove all pieces. Materials Shaving Cream Easter Eggs Food Coloring Eggs Cookie Sheet Shaving Cream or Cool Whip Straw Gloves (optional to not get too messy) Directions Squirt shaving cream/cool whip onto a cookie sheet, spreading it evenly. Drip different colors of food coloring onto the shaving cream. Take the straw and swirl the colors together to get a tie dye look. Now roll an egg on one side into the colors and flip it over. Let it sit for 10 minutes, then rinse it clean.
