2 Volunteer Orientation 4-H works because of the adults that become volunteers. All 4-H volunteers are required to complete a one-time volunteer orientation. Volunteers may complete this requirement by attending an in-person session or online. Orientation needs to be completed before a volunteer s enrollment will be accepted. Online Orientation: Be sure to go all the way to the end of the module to where it asks your name, county, etc. If you do not, you will not be given credit for completion. Missouri Pork Expo The 2018 Missouri Pork Expo and In the Show Ring are rapidly approaching. In the Show Ring is set for February 6, Those youth attending also receive Show Me Quality Assurance certification/recertification. We are strongly encouraging attendees to pre-register, as it will make registration at the event much smoother and quicker for our staff as well as the students. All information can be found on our website, They can click on the Register Now button to register and pay (if necessary) online. If you have any questions, contact Diane Slater Director of Communications at the Missouri Pork Association diane@mopork.com State 4-H Horse Judging Contest The 2018 Missouri State 4-H Horse Judging Contest is being held February 24, 2018 at the National Equestrian Center in Lake Saint Louis. This year we are excited to partner with the Missouri Quarter Horse Youth Association. MQHYA will also be hosting a horse-judging clinic on Friday afternoon for any youth interested (see attached flier for further information on timing and registration for the clinic). The 4-H Horse Judging Contest will be part of the contest on Saturday, Feb. 24 th mentioned in the information attached but will also have other area youth participating. Contest registration will begin at 8am, with the contest beginning at 9am. The contest will consist of four conformation classes and four performance classes. Juniors will give reasons on one conformation class, while seniors will give reasons on one conformation and one performance class. Jamie Gross will serve as the official for the contest and lunch will be provided to participants. Awards will be presented in both the Junior and Senior divisions. The top senior county team will be selected to represent Missouri in national competition. Registration is open until February 8 and is done through 4HOnline. Teen Conference This March, go on location for an epic leadership adventure at the 2018 State 4-H Teen Conference! The theme is Lights Camera LEADERSHIP! and your State 4-H Council teens are making this another fun and exciting event for youth ages Teen Conference is the first big trip away from home for many 4-H ers, and it s a good choice. You ll meet amazing new friends, learn how to be a better leader and get a heads-up on all the exciting things waiting for you as a 4-H teenager! Teen Conference is safe and fun, and the hotel is super nice. Cost is $179 (if you share the large bed with a friend you select) or $229 (if you prefer your own bed). The production starts just after noon on Saturday, March 24th and the wraps at 11 a.m. on the 25 th. Teen Conference registration is open at until February 15. Be sure you don t miss out! 2

3 2018 Missouri Youth Judging and Grading Contest and Clinic We are pleased to announce this year s Missouri Livestock Judging and Grading Contest and Clinic, our 30 th year at the University of Missouri. This year s event is scheduled for Saturday, March 3 and will continue the long-held traditions of Missouri Livestock judging and offer students the ability to develop their judging skills. Co-sponsored and coordinated by the University of Missouri, the Missouri Department of Agriculture, and the Ag Education Advisory Team, this is a great opportunity to support and develop Missouri s youth involved in animal agriculture. The clinic is designed for participants in 8th grade or younger and will focus on hands-on learning, working in small groups to learn more about the basics of livestock evaluation, and understanding the importance of USDA grading of cattle. The contest will provide students the ability to develop and test their skills in a contest-like setting. Shooting Sports Leader Certification Training The spring shooting sports leader certification will open soon. The spring workshop is taking place March at Camp Jo-Ota in Clarence, MO. Registration opens within 4HOnline on January 1. Workshops usually fill up before the deadline so do not delay! For more information about the workshop will be available in 4-H Online. Missouri 4-H Foundation Scholarships The Missouri 4-H Foundation offers more than sixty scholarships every year, each ranging from $500 to $2,500. One scholarship application permits applicants to be considered for any available scholarship, subject to conditions specified by the donor. Applications are due to the extension office by Friday, February FCS Financial Scholarships FCS Financial believes in the future of our next generation. For that reason, the Board of Directors began the FCS Financial Scholarship Program in 2004 to support higher education for children or grandchildren of FCSF customers. Each year up to 35 scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each are provided to eligible Missouri high school seniors. Since its inception, more than $412,000 has been awarded through the scholarship program. The application requires information on school activities, volunteer, and work history. Scholarship applications are due March 1. Club grants are also available, due April 1. Ag youth funding is also available for qualifying 4-H projects. For more information: 3

4 MCSC-Monsanto High School Scholarship Awards Do you know high school students who are dedicated to improving their community and looking for scholarship money to continue their education? If your answer is yes, the Missouri Community Service Commission is looking for those individuals. It is that time of year again when the Commission recognizes eight outstanding high school student-volunteers (by awarding $1,000 scholarships each). The Commission will also honor AmeriCorps Members, local community volunteers, and businesses for their commitment in meeting unmet needs in the community where they live, work, and play. Application deadline is Friday, March 2. To find out more information and to access the application and nomination form, please visit COMO Swine Clinic COMO Swine is a clinic open to all 4-H and FFA members who are interested in learning more about Swine. Guest speakers will cover topics in evaluation, showmanship, soundness, nutrition, management, health, and more topics to be determined. The clinic will take place on March 10, 2018 at the Trowbridge Livestock Arena in Columbia. Shooting Sports: Save the Date March 17: Shotgun Rules Clinic - This clinic is open to currently approved 4-H volunteers that have completed the basic 4-H Shotgun Certification. This is a hands-on clinic/workshop conducted by the Missouri 4-H state instructors. Learn the ins and outs of the various shotgun events. Learn rules, procedures, coaching techniques and how best to instruct/assist your 4-H shooters. April 14-15: Advanced Shotgun Workshop April 13-15: Hunting & Outdoor Skills Leader Certification Workshop - Here is your chance to become certified to teach the 4-H Hunting and Outdoor Skills project of the Shooting Sports program. Participate in active learning as you become acquainted with this challenging, yet FUN project. Learn firsthand from the state instructors on how to lead a local/county Hunting Skills program. Experience various teaching activities that have proven effective for youth. Receive answers to your questions. And become part of a network of other Hunting Skills volunteer instructors. April 27-29: Western Heritage Workshop Through this project, 4-H members have the opportunity to experience the lifestyles and cultures of the Old West through a living history approach to learning. Must have certified project leaders in rifle, pistol or shotgun. This is not a mounted cowboy shooting project, nor do we anticipate it ever becoming a mounted shooting program. 5 Show Me Quality Assurance (SMQA) Show Me Quality Assurance certification is required for all livestock project members (beef, swine, sheep, goats, poultry, and rabbits) to be eligible to show at the county and state fair. Members can complete their certification by attending an upcoming training or through the on-line training module. Certification must be completed by June 1. Upcoming trainings March 7 6:30 p.m. Paris 4-H Building, Fairgrounds March 13 7:00 p.m. Palmyra Marion Co. Courthouse, Courtroom April 17 7:00 p.m. Mexico 4-H Center, Fairgrounds Online training: Missouri 4-H Equine Tour Join up! The 2018 Equine 4-H tour, May 21-28, will be headed west to Nebraska, Wyoming and Colorado exploring the equine world for teens dreaming of an equine related career or aspiring to learn more about the horse world. Each year s tour has a unique itinerary to help youth explore the diverse equine industry indigenous to the destinations. The 2018 will have a focus on the both English and Western performance, the rodeo and entertainment industry and visits to leading medical facilities. The itinerary will include visits to top horse ranches, dude ranches and a Colorado mountain trail ride. One of the higher education visits will be at Colorado State University in addition to meeting nationally recognized leaders and trainers in the equine industry. The $650 tour fee includes charter bus transportation, tours, trail ride, hotels, meals, tour t- shirt, travel bag and other associated costs. Debbie Davis, davisdd@missouri.edu or MU Animal Science Youth Leadership Academy This four-day program will focus on increasing knowledge of Missouri s diverse and dynamic livestock industry, as well as building participant s leadership and communication skills. Twenty high school students will be selected to participate in the session based upon educational, community, and agricultural involvement, as reflected through an application process. Students will have personalized instruction and interaction with counselors, professors and livestock industry leaders. Cost is $100/student. Applications are available on your county 4-H website. Applications must be postmarked by April 1, no late applications accepted. The goal of this academy is to develop young leaders within the livestock industry and help prepare them for a successful future in their endeavors. The participants will have the opportunity to enhance their leadership development, learn about current issues regarding livestock production (all species), tour industry leading operations and businesses, and interact with University of Missouri. 5

6 Mizzou Trap Academy The Mizzou Trap Academy is an opportunity for high school juniors and seniors to learn skills in a competitive, constructive and fun environment. In combination with shooting, all participants will gain information on programs, scholarships, and ways to advance collegiate study opportunities in Natural Resource Recreation Management, Recreation Management and Sport Management. Shooters will be selected on their active and future pursuit of competitive shooting and interest in higher education. Squads will be selected providing a cross-section of skills, scores, and passion for shooting. The 2018 Mizzou Trap Academy is set to take place on July at Prairie Grove Shotgun Sports and Mizzou campus and will be open to 20 eligible shooters. Natural Resources Careers Academy Want to learn about careers in natural resources? Up to 30 high school current juniors and sophomores (rising seniors and juniors, will graduate in 2019 and 2020) will be selected based on scholastic achievement and their interests in the natural world, conservation and environmental studies. Applicants must be Missouri residents. Academy is free of charge th Annual 4-H Day with the St. Louis Cardinals Missouri and Illinois 4-H members, parents, volunteers and alumni will gather at Busch Stadium on Saturday, May 19 for the 17th annual 4-H Day with the Cardinals. The National St. Louis Cardinals will be playing the Philadelphia Phillies in a 1:15 p.m. game. Tickets for the game will be $25.00 each and includes a specially designed t-shirt. 4-H members, leaders, alumni, and their families who purchase 4-H Day with the Cardinals tickets will have the opportunity to participate in a parade around the Busch Stadium outfield. Pre-game ceremonies will include a recitation of the 4-H pledge and ceremonial first pitches by an Illinois and Missouri 4-H member. Tickets for the event must be ordered on the 4-H Day with the Cardinals order form. Ticket order forms are available at the University of Missouri Extension office, or on the web. Ticket orders must be postmarked by April 9. Tickets usually sell out before the order deadline so families are encouraged to order early. 4-H Clubs, counties, or groups of families who would like to be seated together must send their orders in the same envelope. Families can also participate in the 4-H Day with the Cardinals raffle to win prizes such as throwing out the first pitch, autographed baseballs, and tickets to other Cardinal baseball games. Order form available on your county 4-H website. 6

7 State 4-H Congress Mark your calendars now and get registered for the 2018 State 4-H Congress. Registration opens for chaperons for delegates on March 1. The State Council have worked hard to plan our event this year to be different and new!!! Sessions geared toward Career/College Readiness will be offered for several different Career Pathways. You will have a choice of selecting two different sessions in the morning on Thursday. The afternoon Leadership Sessions are all new subjects. We have been invited to have our Wednesday evening meal in the Columns Club on the east side of Mizzou Stadium and then a tour of that area after dinner. Scholarship applications are available from your county 4-H Specialist and are due to the State Office on February 20. They must be signed by your local 4-H staff member and returned to the State Office on or before the deadline in order to be eligible. We will continue fund raising for 4-Hers Helping 4-Hers through the Dodge Ball Tournament. Our Regional Representative Elections will be held on Wednesday during the 4:00 p.m. regional meeting. State Officer elections will be held on Thursday following the evening assembly. Public Speaking Academy The 4-H Public Speaking Academy is preparing for its seventh year! Extension faculty, along with 4-H volunteers will provide educational workshops to help youth build their skills and comfort with public speaking. Participants will be guided through the basics and finer points of writing and delivering a speech. Youth will receive individual assistance. The camp is open to all youth years of age interested in learning more about public speaking. The Academy will be June 20-21, 2018 and registration is due May 17. Lodging will be provided on the campus of Central Methodist University in Fayette, Mo. The cost is $100. 8 MARION COUNTY 4-H NEWS County 4-H Website: Winter Round Up All are invited to attend the Winter Round Up hosted by the Marion County 4-H Council on Saturday, February 24 at the American Legion in Palmyra. Dinner & Dance will be provided for a freewill donation. Dinner will be served from 5:30-7:00 p.m., square dancing from 7:00-11:00 p.m. The event is open to the community. Hope you will join us! Shooting Sports Safety Training All first-time 4 H shooting sports members are required to complete a series of 3 training sessions in order to take part in any shooting sports project. This is a one-time requirement. If you are not enrolled in SS740 through 4-H Online, please make sure that you do so. Sessions for 2018 are on Thursday nights in March: March 8, March 15, March 22, and March 29. You must attend three of the four sessions. All will be from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Zion Lutheran School in Palmyra. Fairbook Cover Design Contest The Marion County Junior Fair Board is holding a contest for all 4-H and FFA fair exhibitors to design the cover of the 2018 fair book. The cover should express the Marion County Junior Fair experience and will be judged on creativity, design and effectiveness in promoting the fair. Entry requirements: theme focuses on the fair, fits an 8 ½ x 11 piece of paper, vertically. Can be hand drawn or computer generated in black ink. Please include your name, club/chapter on the back of your entry. Entries due by Friday, April 6 to the Extension Office. Achievement Day Thursday, March 22, beginning at 5:30 p.m. 4-H Achievement Day offers a wealth of experiences for 4-H members and their families. It s a time to show off your skills and what you have learned. All members are encouraged to participate. Pre-Registration is required. This year we will be focusing on Demonstrations and Public Speaking. This is the qualifying event for the state public speaking contest and state fair demonstration. For additional information on all of these contests, contact your Club Leader or the Extension Office. Registration is due Friday, March 9. Registration forms and addition information about demonstrations and public speaking are available on the county 4-H website and at the Extension Office. Sheep & Goat Show Stock Clinic Saturday, April 21 Brenda Arnold, MU Extension Livestock Educator will host a Show Stock Clinic at Rockin A Arena in Palmyra. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m. There will be workshops to discover more about showmanship, daily care, grooming & animal selection. Live animals will be on site for hands-on practice with fitting demonstrations provided after lunch. Registration Fee is $10 by April 13 or $15 at the door. Fee is due when registering at the Marion County Extension office. 8

9 Fair Camping Reservation Reservations are being accepted for the 2018 Marion County Junior Fair camping spots with electric hook up. Limited spots are available. The fee is $75.00 and must be accompanied by the Campground Rules and Agreement. Club Reports Fabius January 2, 2018 The meet was called to order at 6:30 on January 2, Roll call was what is your favorite winter activity. Clover Kids met and we discussed how to adjourn something or move it. New Business: the following members will be added to the checking account: president Christian Drebes, vice president Boyd Triplett, and community leader Amanda Hall. Former president Andrew Bimson will be removed from the checking account. From now on Clover Kids will meet at 6:15 p.m. Announcements: Beef weigh-in will be Saturday, January 27 at F&T Livestock from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. The 4-H council will be holding a square dance fundraiser February 24 at the American Legion. Family game night will be February 15. March 10 th will be the hog roast also the beginning of the Little Caesar fundraiser. Marion County fair will start July 28 th with the parade. Next meeting will be February 6, Submitted by Addy Kroeger Lucky Four- January 21, 2018 Lucky Four 4-H Club met at Craig & Andrea Kings house. Important business was that everyone was asked to make Valentine Cards for the Nursing home, Teen Conference, canned food drive and everyone decided what month they would give their demonstrations. Then we headed to the King s sheep barn where Craig, Andrea, Candra and Weston spoke to use about the process of having a baby sheep. They answered all our questions and then we could all hold a baby. Submitted by Noah Williams Marion Boosters January 4, 2018 The meeting was held at 6:30 pm, January 4 at the Mt. Zion Lutheran Pre-School. There were 5 members in attendance. We discussed upcoming events, memberships, and had 1 demonstration. Submitted by Becky Mehling Mt. Zion January 4, 2018 Mount Zion 4-H club met at FCS Financial building on January 4, 2018 at 6:30 pm. The safety tip was given by Augustus Meyer on safety in the cold, and health tip was given by Tyler Bush on binge watching TV. Old business that was discussed was club dues, recognition night recap, and Christmas Dinner. New business that was talked about was goal setting in 4-H, 4-H Expo, Recycling Center (February 3). New business was signing up for the 4-H newsletter and February 24, 4-H council is holding a fundraiser dance. Mount Zion also had a program lead by Zachary Rosenkrans on different dances for the fundraiser dance. The next Mount Zion meeting is at the FCS financial building on February 1, 2018 at 6:30 pm.
