Moreno 800 S. Marshall Marshfield, MO (417) FAX (417) Dear 4-H Family, Welcome to In 4-H our 2007 year is one third over! For many or all our new 4-H families this is their first Clover Sayings. Be sure to check with each family to make sure they received this issue. If any 4-H family didn t get their copy, please call the office and let me know. One good way to read Clover Sayings is to make notes as you go through it. If you have questions or want to learn more about a certain event or activity, call or your club leader or Jeannie at the extension center for more information. Don t do like many new families do and call another new family. They probably have the same question. Remember, it s new to them too! So, call someone that is more likely to know the answer and can be able to explain the event, contest or situation. SPEAKING of an upcoming event for all 4-H Families January 20 at Mt. Vernon and January 27 at Bolivar will be our annual 4-H leaders and family workshops. Be sure and register for one or both of these opportunities. (use enclosed form) There are more sessions of interest to your family than you can attend in one day. Notice: registration form is due a week before the event. Walk-ins are still welcome but it costs you more and makes the food ordering more difficult. But, we d rather have you late, than not at all. We had over 200 attend the sessions in Bolivar both of the last two years. It would be great to have every Webster County club represented by at least one family. Hope you had a Happy Holiday Season--One and All!!!! Sincerely, Jeannie Moreno 4-H Youth Development Program Assistant University Extension does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, religion, age, disability or status as a Vietnam era veteran in employment or programs.

State 4-H Horse show dropped its requirement that members must qualify to attend, most of the out state multi-county shows ceased to function. In SW region we have had one that has continued but has now gotten to a very low attendance. It is totally run by 4-H volunteers. Staff input has been to share information, show bills, etc. with their 4-H members. Lisa Ramsey, a Greene County horsemanship leader, has been actively involved with the 'district' show for some years. She would like to see it continue but knows it won't without much more support. If you are interested in having a show to attend beyond county but closer than Sedalia, please attend and share your thoughts, ideas and willingness to help. Those attending on Sunday, Jan. 7, 3 p.m., at the Elfindale Pizza Hut, will determine the shows future. REGIONAL TEEN COUNCIL BE- GINS ELECTIONS AND MAKES RATT PLANS, JAN. 20 AND 27 The SW Regional 4-H Teen Council calls all county representatives to come and join in the planning for this year s RATT (Regional Action-packed Trip for Teens). 4 CLOVER KIDS CORNER Clay Candy Supplies: 3 cups powdered sugar ¼ cup corn syrup ½ teaspoon salt ½ stick (1/4 cup) margarine, softened and cut into pieces 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Different colors of food coloring A large bowl Mixing Spoons Small Bowls Steps: 1. Begin by combining the powdered sugar, corn syrup, salt, margarine, and vanilla in a large bowl. 2. Mix these ingredients until the dough is not sticky. More powdered sugar may need to be added to make it less sticky (from ¼ to 1/3 cup). However, add the extra sugar in slowly and be sure to stop when the dough feels dry. 3. Now divide the dough into balls and place each ball into separate bowls. 4. Add different colors of food coloring into each bowl. 5. Mix in the food coloring with a spoon to begin with. Once the coloring begins to blend, use your hands to really blend it together. Now you can make all kinds of sculptures out of your edible clay! *Be sure to eat the sculptures soon after you make them so they do not turn into candy rock sculptures! Source: Candy Clay. 6 STATE HORSE JUDGING CONTEST AND CLINIC Each year Missouri 4-H hosts a state horse judging contest to pick the top junior and senior teams, with the seniors advancing to a national contest. For the past two years they have sent an all star team on to National but in 2007 they are going to send the top senior county team to represent Missouri 4-H in Louisville, KY. 7 t Page 7 MAKING THE CHARACTER CONNECTION In 2007 my goal for the Character Connection is to provide you more complete information on each pillar of character. It is important to know that the Six Pillars of Charactersm are Trustworthiness, Respect, Responsibility, Fairness, Caring and Citizenship. It is even more important to understand what each of those pillars means and how they relate to decisions we make every day. I wish for you a happy, healthy and successful year; one where every day you make sure CHARCTER COUNTS! It s up to You - You know how it is. Your woodworking project goal has always been to make a desk for your family. After several years in the project you get started. Building the desk is harder than you thought and there are so many other things to do. Your project leader and your parents encourage you to finish the desk and offer suggestions on how to make the project easier and more interesting. Even with all of their encouragement the final decision on completing the desk is yours. That s the way it is with character. Parents, caring adults and even your peers can tell you what it takes to be a person of character but in the end the decision to act as a person of character is yours. You alone will decide how to treat others, what your work ethic will be and what criteria you will use for making even the smallest of decisions. Choosing to be a person of character means not always doing what you want to do but doing what is right regardless of what others may say. Others may provide you with important information but ultimately your character is up to you. Mary Jo Williams, state 4-H specialist.
