3 CLOVER KIDS CORNER Through Clover Kids clubs, children learn how to get along, share and work in groups, explore their interests, and build self-confidence. Each Clover Kids Corner provides an activity, information, or other materials that Clover Kids leaders can use in planning and implementing experiences that introduce five-to seven-year olds to the 4-H concept of learning by doing. Bread in a Bag Ingredients 2 cups white flour 1 cup whole wheat flour 3 tablespoons powdered milk 3 tablespoons sugar 1 teaspoon salt 1 package Rapid Rise yeast 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 cup hot water (125 to 130 degrees F) Extra flour to use during kneading process Directions Combine white flour, whole wheat flour, yeast, sugar, salt, and powdered milk in a 1-gallon heavy duty Ziploc freezer bag. Squeeze upper part of bag to force out the air. Shake and work bag with fingers to blend ingredients. Add hot water and oil to dry ingredients. Reseal bag. Mix by working bag with fingers until the dough is completely mixed and pulls away from the bag. On floured surface, knead dough 5 minutes or until smooth and elastic. Put dough back into bag and let it rest 10 minutes. If working in teams, divide dough in half and shape. Let rise until double in size. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 to 30 minutes until golden brown. Remove from pan and cool on wire rack or dish towels. If time is limited and a stove is unavailable, children can take dough home to bake. Source: Butter: Ingredients heavy cream & Jar with a lid Directions Pour heavy cream into a jar with a lid. Screw the lid on tight and begin to shake it. The cream has globs of fat and protein. By shaking the jar, the fat and protein move around in the cream and stick together. Keep shaking the cream back and forth until it thickens. It takes about 10 minutes to turn to butter. The leftover liquid is buttermilk. REGIONAL INFORMATION Page 3 ACHIEVEMENT DAY April 26 at the Webster County Fairgrounds in Marshfield. 5 SPORTFISHING LEADER CERTIFICATION April Heit s Point Camp Gerry Snapp The annual certification workshop for 4-H Sportfishing volunteers will be held on Friday and Saturday, April Volunteers wishing to lead a 4-H fishing program are to participate in this training. This workshop isn t about teaching you to fish, but it is about preparing you to lead a fishing project. Sportfishing is much more than just grabbing a rod and going fishing. 4-H Sportfishing includes ethics, fisheries management, tackle craft, fish biology, aquatic education, and more. You will participate in activities that assist youth in learning skills and gaining knowledge about fishing, fisheries, and the environment. Heit s Point Camp sits on the Lake of the Ozarks, east of Lincoln, MO. You will receive great resources and a new perspective about the 4-H fishing program. Pre-registration is due April 15. Get information and the registration form online at workshop.htm or from your County University Extension Center. 4 H WILDLIFE STATE CONTEST Gerry Snapp April 12, 2008 Prairie Fork Conservation Area (near Williamsburg) The state Wildlife Contest is an educational experience as well as a competitive 4-H event. This event has been in existence since 1991, but is still relatively unknown. Traditionally in Missouri, there has been only a handful of youth that participate. The wildlife & wildlife habitat knowledge, concepts, and practices taught through the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program (WHEP) state event provide a solid knowledge base for wildlife conservation. This event is open to any 4-H youth in any project, but is especially appropriate for those enrolled in Wildlife, Conservation Frontiers, and Hunting & Outdoor Skills. There are a multitude of resources available at your University Extension Center that can be downloaded from the University Share Drive. Junior and Senior age division (all ages) Compete as Individual and/or County Teams County teams may be designated by volunteer coach on the day of the state contest Seniors advance to National Contest For more information about the Wildlife Habitat Evaluation Program, details on the state contest, and registration forms check the website: go/projects/wildlife. CITIZENSHIP MEANS REACHING OUT TO OTHERS Mary Jo Williams America is now in the 5 th year of the Global War on Terror. Communities all over the country are impacted as local citizens are deployed, leaving their homes, businesses, and jobs. More importantly, they leave their families for long periods of time and miss important events like birthdays, graduations, first steps, and the first time a tooth falls out. These brave families live in what is now known as a new normal and do a remarkable job of keeping the home fires burning. So what does this have to do with citizenship for 4-H families? First, there are 4-H families who have a military family member. 4-H ers and 4-H clubs can serve as second families. Be sure they have what they need to carry on a relatively normal life. Maybe a mom would like some free babysitting so she could have an afternoon to herself. Maybe there is lawn work that needs to be done. Remember not to be pushy they may have all the help they need just let them know that you are there to help if needed. For those that that are not 4-H families you might consider: Collecting school supplies, disposable cameras, or backpacks for Hero Packs Packing Hero Packs Adopting a military family or a local Family Readiness Group (these groups are located near an Armory) Inviting military youth to 4-H events and activities Inviting them to join 4-H Just being there to provide support Most importantly, saying thank you. Your club may want to view the long movie at this link: shortmovie.php. For more information check out the Operation: Military Kids website at Page 5 CLOVER SAYINGS
