1 Term 3 Week th September 2017 ParentNet enews PRINCIPAL S WORDS We have come to the end of another term with some real progress being made. The introduction of the ROLSTAR program along with the quality work being done by our Teaching staff has resulted in some great gains in regards to behaviours at school. These are shown in the following graph showing the behaviours over the 3 Terms. The general trend is for behaviours to be improving which is a good reflection of the great work being done by the school staff. We have also had the School Improvement Unit pay us a visit. They have been very supportive of the work done by the staff in the classroom. As a Principal, it is great to see the students and staff working well together. Have a great holiday and we look forward to seeing everybody back on the 3rd October. Scott Whybird Principal 2018 Enrolment Packs are now available for collection from the Main Office THINKUKNOW CYBER SAFETY Our School Based Police Officer, Haylee Campbell conducted student ThinkUKnow cyber safety sessions with the Year 7, 8 and 9 cohorts this week. The presentation provided students with important cyber safety education, including the following: Privacy & Security Safe social media use Sharing information Healthy digital relationships What can go wrong How to handle challenges Managing time online Where to go for help For more information visit TOUCH FOOTBALL Our 3 teams have been travelling to Atherton each week for the Interschool Touch Competition. We were fortunate to have fantastic community support from Howe Farming who kindly donated the use of their bus to transport players to and from their games each week. This year we had two Senior teams and one Junior team. All team members worked hard and supported each other throughout the competition. Mr Alford, Mr Cifuentes, Ms Sparkes and Mr House accompanied the teams each week to coach, referee, fill water bottles and cheer. All our teams were very successful in this competition. The Junior team beat Malanda 9-5 and our Senior 2 team beat Atherton in the Monday night grand final 8-6. Our Senior 1 team narrowly missed out on playing off for 1 st and 2 nd due to a count-back. Senior 1 was placed third overall defeating Malanda Congratulations to Lachlan Ford, Chris Adams and Hubert Elu who were awarded Best and Fairest Player in each of our teams. This means that for the third year running, Mareeba State High is the Champion School in Touch Football. AWE- SOME WORK! Michelle Cifuentes Head of Department Health & Physical Education & Home Economics SCHOOL BASED TRAINEESHIP Year 11 student Nahkia Ius has signed up with Skills 360 for a School-based traineeship in Hairdressing at Sorella Hair and Beauty Studio. 2 NON NOBIS SOLUM NOT FOR OURSELVES ALONE VISITING CHOREOGRAPHER This term a number of classes have been fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Ms Geraldine Petersen. Ms Petersen has been working with a range of classes on learning new dance styles and choreography. It is great to see students motivated and learning in the classroom. A special thank you goes to Ms Petersen who is an exceptional dance teacher and past student of Mareeba State High School. Thank you to Ms Emily Kitchiner for all of your support to our dance students. Kylie Lambert Head of Department Visual & Performing Arts & Languages DESIGN A DRONE The Year 9 Digital Technologies class has been working hard designing a drone for the Design a Drone Queensland competition. We submitted one entry and wish the students luck. Well done for all of your hard work! Rebecca Seibert Business Education Teacher QParents COMING SOON STAFF FAREWELL Mrs Jill Keating finishes up at our school this week as Head of Department of the Junior school, following her husband Chris to Brisbane. Mrs Miriam Fejo leaves us also after many years doing various roles and most recently as Student Referral Room Officer. Wendy Kum Yuen goes on maternity leave and excitedly awaits the birth of her first baby. We wish them all well and thank them very much for their dedicated efforts in the school and especially in Student Services. Sheri Mills Guidance Officer EXCELLENCE IN EQUESTRIAN Mareeba State High School has numerous students who excel in equestrian events. To be successful, students need to be motivated, organised, empathetic and love what they do. Many parents and carers are behind the scenes travelling to a wide range of shows and equestrian events across the far north region to make this happen. Recently the Rogato family travelled the show circuit where Giulia and Germaine competed successfully against local and interstate riders in show jumping, the hack and dressage ring. Congratulations to all of the students, staff and parents involved in equestrian events at our school. Well done! Kylie Lambert Head of Department Visual & Performing Arts & Languages QParents is a secure, online portal that has been created by the Department of Education and Training to provide parents of Queensland state school students with twenty-four hour access to their child's information. The portal allows you to securely access information about your child and communicate directly with your child's school.
