Overall Champion Meagan Rousseau, Pike County VOLUNTEER LEADERS MUST BE CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER LEADERS WHO MAY BE HELPING YOUR 4-H ERS GROOM ANIMALS MUST BE OFFICIALLY CERTIFIED VOLUNTEER LEADERS OF THE 4-H PROGRAM IN MISSISSIPPI. This means you must submit the names of these volunteers to the State 4-H Department. Be sure to list the volunteer leaders who will be assisting your 4-H ers with animals at the show. All parents that assist with animals should be signed up as volunteers. REMINDER: 4-H/FFA MEMBERS MUST BE ETHICS CERTIFIED TO SHOW LIVESTOCK!! The State Fair will be here soon and if you have new exhibitors who have not completed Ethics Certification, you should provide this training for them in September. Let us know, if you need any materials for your training. Exhibitors completing this training will be certified until December 31, Re-certification will be required for MID-SOUTH FAIR 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST This contest will be an excellent experience for your judging team members. The livestock judging contest will be on September 24, 2005, in Memphis, TN. This contest begins at 9:00 a.m. Each county can enter one junior and one senior team of either three or four members. Contestants are to assemble in the North Barn Arena Building. You should report to this contest location at 8:30 a.m. to get your team checked in. Deadline for entries is September 5, This would be an excellent contest for your 4-H/FFA members before our state contest at the State Fair. If you need a form to enter your teams, let me know. 3

4 THE MID-SOUTH FAIR ALSO HAS JUNIOR LAMB, BEEF, AND SWINE SHOWS. IF YOU NEED ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ABOUT THESE SHOWS, LET ME KNOW. MID-SOUTH FAIR 4-H DAIRY JUDGING CONTEST The dairy judging contest will be on October 1, 2005, in Memphis, TN. This contest begins at 9:00 a.m. Deadline for entries is September 23, Each county can enter one junior and one senior team of either three or four members. Contestants are to assemble in the arena building. You should report to this contest location at 8:00 a.m. to get your teams checked in. They also have a junior and open dairy show. If you need any information about these shows, let me know. MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR REMINDER ENTRIES! All junior beef breeding, commercial beef heifer, swine, junior market goats, junior dairy cattle (both purebred and commercial diary heifers) and open dairy show entries are due by September 15, An entry or stall fee of $8.00 per head must accompany entries for the open dairy show. Beef breeding animals, commercial beef heifers, swine, junior market goats, junior dairy cattle, and open show dairy cattle will be entered on-line. Lamb and steer entries will be taken from the nominations that were due August 15, John Giesemann has sent the information and program for entering to you. SENIOR 4-H LIVESTOCK JUDGING CONTEST The senior 4-H livestock judging contest will be held Saturday, October 8 th, starting at 8:00 a.m. This contest will be held in conjunction with the FFA livestock judging contest. If there are youth that want to judge in both contests, their scores will be used in both contests (4-H and FFA). For example, a contestant can be a member of the Smith County 4-H team and also a member of the Taylorsville FFA. All contestants in the 2005 contest must be pre-registered by September 16, 2005 on Form 166. A county may enter as many contestants in the contest as they desire. However, you must designate your teams, if you have more than enough contestants to fill one team (Example: Oktibbeha A Team and Oktibbeha B Team). Individuals may compete for individual awards. The state winning 4-H livestock judging team will represent Mississippi at the national contest at the Western National in Denver, CO in January, MARKET GOAT CONTEST AT THE STATE FAIR - A market goat judging contest will be held Friday, October 14th, starting at 7:00 p.m. Any youth (4-H/FFA) who are residents of Mississippi may participate. A county may enter as many contestants as they desire. However, you must designate your teams, if you have more than enough contestants to complete one team. (Example: Tate A Team and Tate B Team). Also you must designate juniors and seniors. Individuals may compete for individual awards. All contestants in the 2005 Contest must be pre-registered by September 16, 2005 on Extension Form 166. Send entries to Gale Chrestman. A goat quiz bowl will be held on Friday, October 14th, at 5:00 p.m. Each county may enter as many contestants as they desire. You must pre-register your contestants by September 16, You may enter as many teams as you want. Each team will be made up of two (2) members. OFFICIAL HEALTH CERTIFICATE REMINDER An Official Health Certificate with each animal identified will be required on all livestock showing at the 2005 Mississippi State Fair. This includes all market animals, beef breeding cattle, commercial beef heifers, and dairy cattle (purebred and commercial dairy heifers). All Mississippi cattle are exempt from Brucellosis and Tuberculosis tests. Checks should be payable to the MS Goat Association. MISSISSIPPI STATE FAIR PREMIUM BOOKS Each county will receive 2 premium books in the county packet as soon as they are available. Please make sure your exhibitors and parents have a copy of the rules for the shows in which they participate. Please refer to the schedule of events attached. DAIRY SWEETHEART CONTESTS AND MEAT GOAT PRINCESS CONTEST A Junior and Senior Dairy Cattle Sweetheart, a Junior and Senior Dairy Goat Sweetheart, and a Junior and Senior Meat Goat Princess will be selected during the Mississippi State Fair. Winners will be selected based on poise, beauty, personality and knowledge of their project. The winners of each division will receive a 35 mm camera. Special awards will be given to first and second alternates. Rules and regulations concerning the contest are found in the Mississippi State Fair catalog. Please have the entries to our office by October 1, Please encourage your girls enrolled in dairy and goat projects to enter this year. OUTSTANDING SHEPHERD AWARD AT STATE FAIR Individual exhibitors or county groups can enter. Competition will be based on (1) creativity, (2) educational value of exhibit, (3) attractiveness of exhibit, and (4) cleanliness of pens and exhibit area. The Mississippi Junior Sheep Association will sponsor this award which goes to an exhibitor or county group that maintains the most outstanding stall area and educational exhibit. Individual exhibitors may enter this competition. Judging will be from 5 p.m on Friday, October 7 th, to 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 8th, The winner will be announced during the Junior Sheep Show. Contestants and county groups should register at the weigh-in Friday afternoon and pick up their exhibitor number. Award: 1 st 2 nd 3 rd $25 $15 $10 COMMERCIAL HEIFERS AND STEERS SPECIAL NOTICE! Double check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors that are exhibiting steers and commercial beef and dairy heifers about horns. All commercial heifers and steers showing at the State Fair and District and Round-Up Shows must be polled or dehorned with no scurs or regrowth to exceed 1½ inches above the skin line. Also, remember the minimum weight on commercial heifers is 500 pounds for State Fair. MARKET GOATS SPECIAL NOTICE! Check with your 4-H/FFA exhibitors, who are exhibiting market goats, about horns. Goats may be shown that are polled, dehorned, or disbudded with no regrowth to exceed 1½ above the skin line. Removal of horns is not allowed on the show grounds. 5

11 2005 STATE 4-H HORSE CHAMPIONSHIP The 2005 State 4-H Horse Championship, including team demonstration, individual demonstration, public speaking, horse bowl, hippology, horse judging, horse art and horse photography contests was an outstanding event! The show ran extremely smooth and this is due to the fine work and cooperation of many, many people. I want to express my appreciation to all exhibitors, parents, volunteers, leaders, agents, and specialists for their excellent cooperation and interest in the 4-H horse program. We especially appreciate the Extension agents/program associates and volunteers for working at the show and admire their dedication to seeing that the show is run in the best way possible. Of course, the work starts with the county programs and agents/program associates are to be commended for their support of this program.
