It is the responsibility of the 4-Her/ family to meet this deadline. To enroll or change your projects go: See Page 2 and 3 for IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK DEADLINES! 4-H Leaders: To serve as an active leader for your club this year, you must complete the leader packet and turn it into the office by June 15. Also, be sure to have your Health and Human Services Screening sheet filled out and mailed to the address listed on the form. All leaders and volunteers working with 4-Hers need to have this form filled out and mailed in by June 15. A copy of the form can be found online at or in the Extension Office. Level testing for the County Fair Horse Show must be completed by July 10. Certified instructors approved to complete horse advancement level testing can be found at: You must use an individual listed on this website for the appropriate skill level you are trying to pass. Written tests are still required to be completed at the Extension Office. IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK PROJECT REMINDERS: Youth Quality Assurance (QA) Training: Must Be DONE by JUNE 15 Each 4-Her planning to exhibit livestock (beef, dairy cattle, dairy goat, sheep, meat goats, swine, rabbits and poultry) will need to complete at least three online learning modules within their respective age group by June 15. Age groups (age as of Dec. 31) are: Junior 8-10 years; Intermediate years; and Seniors years. The online modules can be found at Cost is $5 per 4-Her. The Extension Office has a guide for completing the online modules. Once the youth complete a module, they can print it out and mail it to the Extension Office or they can the certificate to the Extension Office at washington-county@unl.edu. Upon receipt of the certificates we will be able to verify which 4-Hers have completed QA. Testing must be completed and certificates must be received by June 15. (Intermediate and Seniors who have already tested out do NOT have to complete the online modules.) Online resources that may be helpful include: Website: Step-by-step video on how to pay for the course and get registered: State 4-H/FFA Livestock Exhibition Policy Simultaneous participation in 4-H and FFA programs is acceptable and encouraged if youth choose to do so. However, there may not be duplication of project animals or other production units. For purposes of exhibition, this means an animal can only be nominated and shown in one organization or the other, not both. Any animal shown as an FFA exhibit is ineligible for show as a 4-H exhibit by any exhibitor. An animal can be nominated for show in either 4-H or FFA but not both. 3 ANIMAL SCIENCE IMPORTANT LIVESTOCK PROJECT DEADLINES: Online Affidavits Due JUNE 15 4-Hers exhibiting market sheep, market goats, market swine, breeding beef, breeding sheep, breeding does, rabbits and feeder calves at the Nebraska State Fair or AK-SAR-BEN must: 1. Enter the animal s livestock affidavit online by midnight on June 15. To do so, go to: If you need assistance, contact the Extension office for a helpful guide. 2. Submit a livestock ID form for each animal. Due to the Extension office by June 15. All Livestock Must also be Tagged and/or DNA Collected by JUNE 15 Animals requiring a 4-H tag are Bucket Calves (all calves must have a 4-H tag no herd tags allowed); Feeder Calves; Meat Goats; Dairy Goats (can also be tattooed or drawing); Breeding Does (4-H Pink Tag/Tattoo); Breeding Ewes (can also be tattooed); and Market Lambs. 4-H families may pick up tags and DNA envelopes at the Extension Office. Tags are $1.00; DNA envelopes are $6.00. NOTE: All online affidavits for Market Lambs and Market Goats require the scrapie tag I.D. field to be completed. Type NA for all Market Wethers in both Market Lambs and Goats. 4-H Swine Project Identification Due JUNE 15 4-H swine to be shown at the County Fair, Nebraska State Fair and AK-SAR-BEN must be identified by ear notches. To protect 4-H swine projects from the Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV), 4-H families will be responsible for ear notching, collecting DNA samples and submitting the proper paperwork to the Extension Office by June 15. Identification forms are available at the Extension Office. DNA envelopes for market swine to be shown at the Nebraska State Fair or AK-SAR-BEN are available from the Extension Office. Swine projects to be shown at the Nebraska State Fair or at AK-SAR-BEN must also submit a livestock affidavit online by midnight, June 15. Need help with ear notching or collecting DNA samples??? Contact the Extension Office at Family Livestock Judging Contest 4-Hers interested in livestock judging are encouraged to join us for our 2015 Family Livestock Judging Contest that will be held on June 28 with the meal starting at 5:30 pm and the contest starting at 6:00 pm at the Washington County Fairgrounds. NEW FOR 2015: Feeder Calf Self-Tagging Tags and identification form may be picked up at the Extension Office. Identification forms must be returned to the Extension Office by June 15. Calves shown at AK-SAR-BEN must also have their feeder calf livestock affidavit entered online by midnight, June 15.!!! Attention!!! Beef & Sheep Project Members: 4-H breeding beef and market lamb project members have the opportunity to exhibit in a new class at the 2015 Washington County Fair. We will have a Bred and Owned Breeding Heifer and Bred and Owned Market Lamb class at the Fair. Breeding heifers and market lambs must be from the Washington County 4-Her s or family s herd or flock and must be owned, raised and shown by the 4-Her. The animal must be raised by the 4-H member at a residence in Washington County. 4- Her s must complete a Bred and Owned Affidavit in addition to the livestock ID form they submit to the Extension Office. Both of these forms are due by June 15 in the Extension Office. The 4- Her may choose to enter in the Bred and Owned class or the regular fair class, but not both. Wanted: Livestock Judging Team Members Livestock Judging helps 4-Hers learn how to evaluate breeding and market livestock and how to make decisions about selecting, culling, buying, and selling livestock. 4 Shooting Sports The 4-H Shooting Sports program is available to those 4-Hers age 8-18 (as of January 1). However, exhibitors participating in the Shooting Sports program must complete the required safety hours and practice sessions offered before the County Fair competitions. Those not fulfilling these requirements will not be allowed to compete. BB Gun Shooting Sports requires each shooter to complete safety training once every three years. ALL first year 4- Hers or those new to the shooting sports program MUST participate in this safety program to compete. Classes for this year will be held on Saturday, June 20 and Saturday, June 27. Each day will have two sessions: 9:00-10:30 am and 10:30-noon. Please contact the Extension Office to register for the BB gun session you plan to attend. Each time slot only accommodates eight shooters. 5 HORTICULTURE 2015 On-Line Horticulture Judging Contest The 2015 Nebraska 4-H Online Horticulture Judging contest will being going on during the month of June. This year the contest will be available from June 12 at 8:00 am until June 22 at 8:00 am. It will be composed of three parts: general knowledge questions, plant parts and seed identification, as well as a judging portion. It is open to ALL youth, as well as adults. The password is Nebraska and the two links that are listed below will take you directly to the contest. Youth must fill in all of their information completely. The online contest should only be taken once by each participant, if it is taken multiple times the first score entered will be the only one used. No study materials are to be used while taking the test. The contest will allow an opportunity for the participant to review the answers prior to submitting. Once submitted, the participants will see their score, but they will not be able to see which questions they missed. After the contest has ended, the participants can request to see their scores and their answers. Study materials for the online contest and State judging contest held at the State Fair are the same and can be found at: H Horticulture Fair Help Needed We are in need of both adult and youth volunteers to help with the 4-H horticulture exhibits at the Washington County Fair. Volunteers will help with checking in exhibits, assisting judges, writing judge s comments, placing ribbons on the exhibits and recording the results on Saturday, July 25, from 7 am to 4 pm. You can pick the time of day and length of time to help. If you are interested, please contact Steve at the Extension Office at or stonn2@unl.edu. OTHER EVENTS: Youth Tractor Safety Course The 2015 Tractor Safety Trainings will be held in Lincoln and Wayne, Nebraska in June. Any youth 14 or 15 years of age who works on a farm or ranch other than his/her parent s is required to be certified through a tractor safety course. Extension Educators and field specialists will teach the 2 - day course. Successful completion of the course will allow trained youth to operate a tractor of 2-PTO horsepower, or to connect and disconnect an implement or any of its parts to or from a tractor. The training in this area will be June 4-5 in Lincoln or June in Wayne. Cost for the course is $60, which includes all course materials, lunch both days and breaks. Advanced registration is required. 6 OTHER EVENTS: Summer Photography Workshop: An invitation from Burt County has been extended to area 4-H members to join in their Photography Workshop! The workshop is planned to be held in Oakland. A date has yet to be announced. We are working on an exciting opportunity to have Eric Anderson, formerly of Lyons present a photography workshop for any 4-H members and the public. Eric is a 23 year old severe weather, landscape, astro and time lapse photographer. He is based in Omaha and is currently pursuing a broadcasting degree with an emphasis in news media at the University of Nebraska, Omaha. However, as of press time for this article a date has not been confirmed. Please call the Nebraska Extension Office in Burt County at for more details. Go to Eric s website at: to see what amazing photos he has taken!! TEENAGE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED! Kathleen Cavanaugh from the Y board in Blair is looking for teens to volunteer to help with different things during the Gateway Run on June 13. The race starts at 8 am and should only take about two hours. If interested contact Kathleen via at whitedogacres@abbnebraska.com. Race Timer table/start line to assist Tom W- need 2 people HELP These people will assist our timer-removing race tags as runners come back across the finish line and transporting them to Tom at the computer as he lists the finishers. Judge costumes and conduct Award Ceremony to distribute globes and prizes - 2 people HELP Some runners will be in costume so they need to be judged 1-4th place for prizes. I may get Dave Nannen to do this as he is our announcer. Bike lead-1 person HELP This person will lead the runners along the route as the race starts. Will need a bike and helmet. Blair police will be there too. Place Red Carpet and borrowed Tensa Ropes at Finish line after race start and place and retrieve Y provided orange safety cones funnel at end of race - Secure Red Carpet in Jeff s office after Race - 2 people HELP This is a loaned red carpet and movie theater ropes that we will need placed at the finish line so that the runners can cross over-hence the Gateway Hurray Hollywood theme. They may be heavy so some strong girls OR boys would be needed. Manage water containers/bottles water/cups provided by Sue and manage food table (outside or inside) - need 1-2 people HELP (Bagels and fruit are being donated-i am picking all up the night before.
