It s not too often you open up a sale catalog and see a110,000 bushel grain bin that looks like a pop can, but that s what 130 mph winds can do. Kyle thought it would be a cool picture to put in. There are a lot of lessons to be learned in life and it seems like the best lessons are taught through trials. On July 10th Jane and I went to our friend s house for dinner and then sat by their pond and visited till about 10 p.m. When we got home the stars where out and it was extremely hot and humid out. We were getting very dry and needing rain as our corn was beginning to tassel. I remember saying to Jane that it didn t look like it was going to rain. At about 4 a.m. it started raining; Jane tapped me and I sighed. After a couple minutes the wind picked up and all of a sudden it sounded like the train that goes by our farm was coming through our bedroom window and then bang, part of the big oak tree in our front pasture hit the house. I grabbed Jane and yelled to Christian to get to the basement and for the next 30 minutes the wind blew like I have never seen before and the sky was bright with lighting. We were able to call Nick and Ryan who live 3/4 of a mile west off us and our daughter Suzanne and her husband Jon who live in Vinton and they were all safe in their basements. When we came out of the house our bin site was smashed and about 40 trees were leveled. We had buildings that were ruined and our crops were flat, and all I could do is thank the Lord that everyone was safe. It will be a while before things get back to normal but as farmers and ranchers we all know one thing, there is no normal. That s why we must have faith and perseverance and look forward to the future. I say all this because to me that s what this sale is all about. The cattle in this sale represent progressive cattlemen and cattlewoman who have over 100 years off raising Red Angus cattle. Each breeder has his own mark on these cattle and we count it as an honor to be able to make this offering to you. We thank you for your interest and may the good Lord bless you! Every Red Angus auction season begins with uncertainty to how the year will play out with cattle prices... and for the last three years, the Kick Off Classic has been the spring board or the big plunge, if you will, for the Gilchrist Auction Tour. On the pessimistic side, I know that in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma there has been severe drought and hardships due to weather and lack of rain. I know that across the entire country, grain prices are at all time highs without a clue where they will settle once the harvest begins. I know that hay and pasture ground continues to be more and more limited. But on the optimistic side, I also know that beef cattle numbers are at there lowest point since the USDA began keeping records. I also know that Red Angus cattle are easy fleshing, low maintenance animals that can convert forage to beef as efficiently as any other beef breed. And I know that there is a lot of room for good Red Angus cattle operations to start up and thrive in the midwest. With a steadily strong and optimistic commercial cattle market through the spring and summer of 2011, I believe we are in for a very good marketing year in the Red Angus business. The Kick Off Classic continues to be one of my favorite auctions of the year because of the super people I get to work with. The Red Angus breeders that comprise this sale offering are some of the elite breeders in the country. The cattle are adapted for the midwest and are excellent, excellent quality cattle. This is the 4th year for the Kick Off Classic and we have sold some very high caliber cattle in Tama, Iowa but I will assure you that none of the previous auctions will hold a candle to the offering we have this year. I sincerely mean it when I say you MUST come to Tama, Iowa and see the offering. The cattle will be available for viewing all afternoon on Friday August 26th and we would love to meet you at Rube s Steakhouse that evening for some of the best midwest eating you will ever have.
