6 Outgoing President s Notes I hope I served the membership well during my term as president of the USTSA. It is an honor to serve, even though it can be taxing to say the least. But because of this service, I was blessed to be able to get to know the membership, as a whole, better than I ever could have without serving. Elisha Otis is now our president, and I feel she is going to be an outstanding leader of our association. Her common sense approach to issues and fiscal knowledge are traits that are needed at this time. Congrats Elisha, and very well deserved! The biggest change during my term, in my mind, has been the ever increasing gap between what I call true Targhees and show ring Targhees. I have been approached by many individuals from other breeds who have seen this trend taking place in our breed. Their own breeds have been decimated by this same trend, and they have advised me to do everything I can to make sure this doesn t happen in our breed. Judges have also commented that Targhees with breed character and composition can compete with any breed out there. The key is remaining true to what the breed really is. As long as I continue to serve on the board, I will continue to fight for this! Sale results from Pierre may suggest others are noticing this too. The bright spot of the national sale were ewe lambs, most likely driven by the starter flock and futurity programs. But other sales were not as robust. Perhaps commercial breeders are noticing these changes and are hesitant to buy. Newell has already issued warnings about the changes that are taking place. Does our future lie in the show ring, or does it continue to thrive in what has made this breed great for over 65 years? I guess only time will tell But I know where I am placing my bet. ~ Jeff Nevens 2017 Election of Officers & Directors President & Montana Director - Elisha Lewis Otis; realmtcowgirl@hotmail.com, Vice President & West Director - Randall Von Krosigk; randell.vonkrosigk@njc.edu, East Director Todd Taylor; toddtaylor@wisc.edu, At Large West Director - Bryan Allred; ballred@cut.net, Central Plains Director - Leroy Pedersen; leroy@koletzkyimplement.com, At Large East Director- Jeff Nevens; aandjnevenslivestock@frontier.com, Wool Show Champions Supreme Champion Fleece Kopren Targhees Reserve Supreme Champion Fleece Beastrom Family More pictures will be available on the website, or by joining us on Facebook at

7 2017 USTSA Hall of Fame John Eichacker John Eichacker of Salem, SD along with his wife Jeanette and five children, Gin, Linda, Dan, Carla, and Daryl raised Targee Sheep, cattle, crops and many other 4-H projects on the family farm. Sheep were an important part of John s farming operation, raising Targhees and Suffolks. He had it planned so lambing would be about finished when calving began. Sheep were easy for our five children to handle and thus help with the chores at a very young age. The kids were in the barn assisting with everything from lambing to tail docking to shearing and also cleaning pens and bottle feeding some lambs each year. John enjoyed his family, farming and always looking for the latest hot spot for fishing. He did fulfill his dream of catching an 11+ pound walleye. John was the number one fan for his grandchildren s sporting games, hardly missing any of them and always getting there first to get the best seat. John was a member of St. Mary s Catholic Church, Salem Legion and McCook Wildlife Club. John was one of the initial members of the Salem Lucky Rider Saddle Club. He was also a member of the Simmental Association, the Suffolk and Targhee Sheep Associations, Dakota Area Targhee Association, the National Border Collie Association and served on the South Dakota Sheep Growers board of directors. One thing John enjoyed about raising sheep was the friendships developed through shows and other events. He viewed it as opportunity to learn from veteran growers, especially when we were new to the industry. John started raising Targhees in the early 80s. His son Daryl won a ewe as a youngster and thus started the flock. After raising Targhees for a number of years, John became a wool buyer and learned to grade wool. It was a big event to have a semi pull into the yard and load up the huge bags of wool at the end of the buying season. John also enjoyed visiting with the producers who brought their wool to our farm. Like many sheep producers, Border Collies were an important part of our operation. John depended on them when we had to move the sheep home every evening because of a coyote problem or any time the herd needed to be moved or a gate guarded. Definitely worth their weight in gold! He was a kind man and became very attached to his border collies. Like most sheep producers, 4-H was a big part of learning to fit and show sheep and John enjoyed teaching his kids. The goal was to earn a berth at the South Dakota State Fair and show there both in 4-H and open class. John was drafted into the Army and served during the Vietnam War. That did have a big impact on his life but he never noticeably showed it. His love of farming brought him home from Vietnam and he lived his life on the farm, raising sheep, cattle and crops and a couple of horses too. Several of his brothers farmed nearby so it was a family thing too. John died very suddenly of a heart attack at the young age of 64 on January 5, His legacy lives on in the farming operation he started after returning from Vietnam.
