2 Welcome Cattlemen &Friends, We would like to personally invite you to our first annual bull sale. Tricia and I can t begin to express how excited we are to offer this set of bulls. To those of you who have who purchased from us in the past, private treaty, we appreciate your investment in our genetics and feel very grateful to have the opportunity to earn your business in the future. Genetics are extremely valuable. To keep it simple, if the bull sires 100 calves in his lifetime and adds an additional 25 pounds of YW, that equals over $3,100. If that bull is a calving ease bull and produces three more live calves, that equates to another $3,000. On just those two traits alone, $6,000 in added value is at stake. Think of what could happen if you have a 10% improvement in feed efficiency on 100 calves? That s another $6,000. I could continue this rationale by getting into the additional added value of carcass traits, but I think you get the picture. All in all, these bulls will provide you with over $10,000 in added value on your calves. The value of genetics is paying out like it never has before. Our philosophy is simple, we are producing low input, high output bulls that add value to every part of beef production. Our bulls excel from an EPD standpoint, they have good dispositions and will produce the kind of calves that will add additional value to your calf crop. This is a deep set of bulls that were developed and designed to work in tough conditions. We work hard to ensure that they do not cost you money, but make you money. You only see forty bulls in our offering because we cull twice. The first time at branding and the second time when we wean coming off of grass. We won t sell a bull that we wouldn t use ourselves. We love Angus cattle and know that the Angus breed is the cornerstone to most every balanced operation. They hold the most complete database on cattle anywhere. With that being said, we are continuing to grow our SimAngus herd as well. I have yet to come across a more genetically complete beef animal. We are very particular about the Simmental genetics we use. They calve easy, they grow fast, their carcass merit is unmatched and their heifers will make the best cows you have ever owned. We are taking the best from the Angus breed and combining it with the best of the Simmental breed. With nearly 1/2 of our bulls in the sale qualifiying as heifer bulls according to the AAA, we wanted to provide our rating system, based on actual data, pedigree, EPDs, and experience. BIRTH WEIGHT () WEANING (WW) WEIGHT RATIO AND YEARLING (YW) WEIGHT RATIO, are a direct comparison of one calf to all the others in his contemporary group. A ratio of 100 is average. Embryo transplant calves will have an ET in place of a ratio. INTERMUSCULAR FAT (IMF) RATIO, is the percentage of fat in the ribeye muscle. It is the primary factor in determining quality grade. Higher levels of intramuscular fat improve quality grade. RIBEYE AREA (REA) RATIO, the surface area of the ribeye muscle at the 12th rib interface on the beef forequarter. Ribeye area is expressed in square inches. ADJUSTED RIBEYE FAT, is an external fat measurement taken between the 12th and 13th rib. Rib fat is used in USDA yield grade calculation and is the most important determinant of retail yield. WEANED CALF VALUE (), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. includes both revenue and cost adjustments associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk, and mature cow size. BEEF VALUE (), an index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for postweaning and carcass value compared to progeny of other sires. CALVING EASE DIRECT (CED), is expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. BIRTH WEIGHT EPD (BW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit birth weight to his progeny compared to that of other sires. WEANING WEIGHT EPD (WW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. YEARLING WEIGHT EPD (YW), expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny compared to that of other sires. SCROTAL CIRCUMFERENCE EPD (SC), expressed in centimeters, is a predictor of the difference in transmitting ability for scrotal size compared to that of other sires. MARBLING EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. 5 American Angus Association Pathfinder Cow Award The Pathfinder Angus program was started in 1978 in an effort to identify superior cows in the breed based on their records of performance from Angus Herd Improvement Records (AHIR). In identifying these superior cows, emphasis was placed on early puberty, breeding and early calving, followed by regularity of calving and above-average performance of the offspring. While outstanding cows can be identified after their first or second calves, the Pathfinder Report requires a minimum of three calves from a cow to determine her regularity of calving and ability to produce superior calves for weaning weight year after year. In addition, an important part of the report is the list of bulls that have sired five or more qualifying females. The program identifies Pathfinder Cows in herds actively involved in AHIR. First, the female must produce her first calf near the herd s average age for first calving. More specifically, the maximum age accepted for first calving of a Pathfinder Cow is the within-herd average for first calving plus 30 days. The within-herd average is determined separately for each herd on AHIR. As a second criteria, the Pathfinder Cow must maintain a regular calving interval. The maximum calving interval is: 365 Days + ( 30 Days / Number of Calving Intervals) Next, the Pathfinder Cow must produce at least three calves with an average weaning weight ratio of 105 to qualify for the report. A minimum of 10 herdmates or contemporaries must be evaluated together each year to determine the weight ratio. Additionally, her calves must be sired by registered Angus bulls. To continue to qualify each consecutive year, the cow must produce regularly and wean a calf that helps maintain the average weaning ratio of 105 or above.
