If any of these are required, please call two weeks prior to the event. 4-H Photo Contest- Get together or start taking your best photos taken since March 1, You may enter one photo per category... people, animals, landscapes, buildings, 4-H in Action, Nature's Beauty, and Family Traditions. County photo winners in the 9-18 year old divisions for the last 3 categories will be sent on to the state 4-H photo contest. Overall county points winner will receive $25 4-H Scholarship. The photo contest entry form is included in this newsletter. Deadline for photo entries is February 28th. South Central District 4-H Winter Enrichment- will be held in Cabarrus County on Saturday, February 23 rd. This day is designed for youth years old. Lunch from Pizza Hut will be provided. Workshops to be offered are Community Service Care Packages for the Troops; District Officer 101; Brain Health and Presentations & Public Speaking. Following lunch the group will travel to NASCAR SpeedPark which includes unlimited go-karts, putt-putt, climbing wall and laser tag. Registrants will receive an arm band for these attractions. The arm band includes all attractions except the arcade games. The cost for the day is $20. Deadline for registering is February 14 th. Suzanne will be transporting our county delegation to this event H Presentations Sign Up- This year 4-H presentation schedule is earlier than in past years. District competition will be held on Saturday, May 18th at Wingate University and the state finals will be held in Raleigh on Saturday, June 22nd. A 4-H Presentation is a method of sharing a skill or something you have enjoyed learning about. Presentation competition is for youth ages 9-18 years old. Cloverbuds (5-8 years old) can also prepare a presentation for county and district but there is no competition. We will also help you develop an outline and sketch ideas for your posters. Deadline to register is April 29th for a presentation. Call the office for a list of presentation catagories that are available. If you would like to check out a video showing state winning presentations, call the 4-H Office. 4-H Poultry Judging Team- Alexander County hopes to have its own junior and senior poultry judging teams this year. The teams will be trained by Kathy Bunton, Area Specialized Poultry Agent. The training sessions will be with Wilkes County. There will be one training each month through May. The training dates are: Tuesday, February 12th, Tuesday, March 12th, Tuesday, April 9th, and Tuesday, May 14th. Summer training sessions and field trips will be determined after the May training session in preparation for the State 4-H Poultry Judging Contest. We will have junior teams (9-13 year olds) and senior teams (14-18 year olds). Poultry Judging involves: Egg Production Past Production Hens;: Market Poultry - Ready to Cook and Parts Identification and Eggs: Interior, Exterior and Broken out Eggs. 2 4-H Cumulative Records Due- If you are 13 years or older and have been active in a specific project book area for 1 to 3 years, then you may want to consider completing a cumulative record. The form is similar to a 4-H project book but covers your work in that area for the past 3 years. If you are interested in beginning your 4-H cumulative record, call the 4-H office for more information. Deadline for 4-H Cumulative Records to the 4-H Office is February 25th. Cash prizes are provided at the state level up to $150. Many of our local 4-H ers have received this prize money. Commissioner's Choice Applications Due- 4-H volunteers should have received applicatons in the mail. If you would like to receive this application in a Word format, please let us know and we will you a copy. This is a great opportunity for your club to receive recognition and prize money for all the outstanding projects you did last year. Copies of your clubs' 2012 Club of the Year form are available at the 4-H Office. Applications are due on March 1st. Banquet will be held on Thursday, March 21st. Campbell s Soup Labels- Please continue to collect Campbell Soup Labels for Barium Springs Homes for Children in Troutman. Bring them to the 4-H Office and your club will receive 1 club of the year point per label. February 4-H County Council Meeting will be on Thursday, February 14th from 3:30-4:00 pm in the small conference room. Emeralds 4-H Club will meet following the county council meeting. Dallas Perry- State 4-H Secretary-Treasurer rode with Steve Troxler- Commissioner of Agriculture in the Governor s Inaugural Parade on January 12 th in Raleigh. Real Money, Real World Simulation- was held at East Alexander Middle School on January 23 rd. Thanks to the following 4- H ers and 4-H Volunteer Leaders that assisted with the stations: Micki Earp, Trudy & Sarah Perry, and Courtney Bowman. South Central 4-H Horse Bowl District Finals- Alexander County Junior and Senior 4-H Horse Bowl teams competed at the district finals on January 26 th at NC A&T in Greensboro. Junior Team Members: Rylee Baker, Claire Boger, Marissa Shalk, Rachel Unger and Lily Marsden. The team placed 3rd in the district competition. Senior Team Members: Kelyn Diamond, Christine Rhodes, Natalie Unger and Kasey Boger. This team placed 2nd in district competition. A special thanks to Cindy Boger and other moms that have helped with coaching and preparing the teams for competition. Curious Clovers 4-H Club- met first for a pizza party this month and finished with an onsite observation of a new septic system. Thank you to Bert Gibson for the informative discussion of the ins and outs of the function of a system and how we can make the most of a septic system. Thank you to Nathan Bowles and his father, Kevin Bowles for hosting the meeting this month. Cornerstone Clovers 4-H Club- met at the NC Cooperative Extension Office on January 21 st at 7:00 pm. We were taught how to play Nutsy by Stephanie Holland and her daughter Aubrie. Everyone had a blast learning a new and very exciting card game. We finished up by having hot chocolate and cookies on that very chilly day. Submitted By: Hayley Bucknum Rocky Springs 4-H Club- Suzanne Rhinehart- 4-H Agent led the group in conducting the National 4-H Science Experiment- Eco-Bot. The club members enjoyed a covered dish dinner. Sugar and Spice 4-H Cooking Club- For our December meeting, we attended the National Gingerbread competition at the Grove Park Inn in Asheville during the Christmas vacation holiday. We then held their meeting at the 4-H Office on January 3rd. We made doggy biscuits out of banana-oatmeal and chicken flavored treats for our own dogs as well as the Alexander County Animal Shelter. We want to welcome our newest member Emily Owensby to our club! February 7th will be our next meeting. We will be decorating cakes. Feel free to come.
