When we get ready to exhibit our projects at the Fair sometimes it s good to take a time out and remember what the true meanings are of the different colors of ribbons. Over the years, I think we have been trained to think that red, and even blue ribbons are bad but this simply isn t the case. The criteria listed on the scoresheets is used to help determine the ribbon placing: Purple: All areas should be outstanding. There should not be obvious flaws in workmanship. Blue: All areas should be rated in the very good or outstanding categories. The exhibit is generally acceptable, but with one or two areas that are not the very best they could be. Red: Ratings would generally fall in the average or needs improvement categories, with possible one very good. The exhibit has several areas that are less than perfect. White: The exhibit has many problems. It is not neatly done or durable. The design principles are not evident. Don t Forget to Pick-up Exhibits Fair exhibits can be picked up on Sunday night, August 13 after 6:00 p.m. or on Monday morning, August 14 from 8 to 10:00 am. What Is Herdsmanship? This may be old news to many of our 4-H members, but it is important for ALL of us to remember what Herdsmanship is about if you are exhibiting livestock at the County Fair. Herdsmanship is the way that a 4-Her displays his or her animals at the Fair. It refers to how neat and attractive 4-H members keep the livestock barn. It also shows how well you care for your animals. At County Fair, State Fair, AKSARBEN and other events 4-H ers are judged on Herdsmanship. The overall purpose of this is to: 1. Develop knowledge and skill in proper handling and stabling of livestock. 2. Develop knowledge & skill in proper care and use of equipment. 3. Present to Fair visitors a neat, attractive, and wellkept livestock exhibit. 4. Develop club spirit, pride, and cooperation. Let s all put forth an extra effort with Herdsmanship this year to present an inviting atmosphere to the public. Once you unload, you must exit the fairgrounds. State Fair Discount Ticket Policy The SF discount tickets will once again be available to 4-H exhibitor families. The tickets are $5.00 each and must be ordered through the Extension Office by Noon on Tuesday, August 156 th. No exceptions! Payment must be made when ordered and no refunds are made. Livestock families can order their own $5.00 discount tickets when they enter their livestock. 4-H livestock exhibitors (beef, sheep, swine, rabbit, poultry, meat goat and dairy) will receive 1 exhibitor pin (badge) which is good for the entire Stater Fair (11 days). Families may purchase additional badges for $25.00 each. Nebraska 4-H is looking for volunteers to help with exhibit entry day, judging, and serving as 4-H exhibit building hosts. Volunteers will also be needed to serve as the Lil Green Mascot, take photographs of events as well as assist with all 4-H contests and events throughout the fair. State Fair 4-H volunteers will receive a gate pass for the day(s) they volunteer. Volunteers can sign-up by completing the 4-H Volunteer Interest Form available online at If you have questions about being a 4-H volunteer at the Nebraska State Fair, please contact: Cathy Johnston, Extension Educator, cjohnston1@unl.edu or (402) We look forward to seeing you in Grand Island! The contest is open to both 4-H and FFA youth and the county must select one individual (either 4-H or FFA) to represent the county at the state event. Exhibitors must be between years of age (as of Jan 1). The contest rules, schedule and structure of events can be found at ml State Fair 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest The 4-H Culinary Challenge Contest will require youth to demonstrate healthy decision making through nutrition, food preparation, menu planning, and food safety, utilizing foods and nutrition curriculum. 13 County Fair Wood Chips and Clean Up This year the sand will not be moved out of the Harm & Tulleys Event Center. It will be firmly packed down. After the sand has been packed, no skid loaders will be allowed in the Harm & Tulleys Event Center. We appreciate the cooperation of everyone in this new process. There will be a pile of coarse wood mulch outside the Harm & Tulleys Event Center that is available for all livestock exhibitors. This includes sheep, goat, swine and bucket calf exhibitors. All exhibitors will be responsible for getting their own wood mulch to their stalls. Please bring wheel barrels and shovels if you have them. There may be a limited supply to borrow. All exhibitors will be responsible for cleaning up their stalls when they leave on Sunday night. This means cleaning up all the wood chips and taking to the designated area. Please bring rakes to clean the chips out of the sand. All manure and wood chips for all animals (this includes sheep, goats, buckets calves) should be taken to the north side of the Harm & Tulleys building. No manure will be piled on the west side of the Sheep/Goat Barn. Be resourceful in your use of the wood chips. Pens/stalls do not have to be changed every day they can be spot cleaned. Feed and water buckets are not to be in pens except during feeding or watering times. Again, we appreciate the cooperation of all 4 H and FFA families.
