2 G20 Department G - General Rules DEPARTMENT G - ANIMALS LIVESTOCK-POULTRY-RABBITS-DOGS-CATS (NOTE: SOME OF THESE RULES ARE COUNTY FAIR ONLY AND SOME ARE STATE FAIR ONLY AND SOME ARE RULES FOR BOTH SHOWS) GENERAL INFORMATION: EXHIBITOR COMPLIANCE: Exhibitors and their associates must cooperate with all Boyd County Fair officials and Nebraska State Fair officials including office clerks, grounds, admission, security and parking personnel and volunteers in all matters of policy. The Holt/Boyd County Fair Regulation Book, Nebraska State Fair General Rules & Regulations, General Information, Health Requirements, 4H/FFA General Rules & Regulations, the IAFE National Show Ring Code of Ethics, and the North American Livestock Show & Rodeo Managers Association (NALSRMA) Rule Infraction Database (RID) will govern. By submitting an application for entry, exhibitors agree to comply with all Rules & Regulations governing these Fairs as referenced in these Rules and available on the State Fair website. 1. STATE FAIR LIVESTOCK RULES - Be sure to review State Fair Livestock Rules in addition to the following rules. Also refer to specific species rules for additional information. 2. INTERPRETATION OF RULES At the State Fair the FFA and 4-H divisions will refer to a 3 person committee the final and absolute right to interpret, determine and settle all matters, questions and differences in regard to or otherwise arising out of, connected with or incident to the fair. 3. ENTRY DEADLINES - All State Fair FFA and 4-H advance entries are at midnight on August 10. Advance entries include: livestock, dogs, poultry, rabbits, and livestock contests. All 4-H and FFA entry fees are nonrefundable. 4. ELIGIBILITY OF EXHIBITORS 4-H - An exhibitor must be a 4-H member enrolled in the project they are exhibiting in the county which he/she represents. Youth must be enrolled in 4-H by June 15 of the current year. In classes where presence of the 4-H'er is required for judging purposes, such as animal exhibits and judging contests, a 4-H member must be 10 prior to January 1, of the current year. FFA - Only bona fide Nebraska FFA members that have paid dues shall be eligible for FFA Division entries. Members may retain their active

3 Department G - General Rules membership until the 30th day of November following the fourth National FFA Convention which occurs after the member graduates from or leaves high school. There will be no discrimination because of race, color, sex, religion, or national origin. 5. ELIGIBILITY OF ANIMALS - Qualified animals for a 4-H or FFA class at the county fair or state fair must be registered purebred or non-registered commercial breeding animals, market beef, feeder calves, market lambs, market goats, market swine and those exotic breeds of breeding beef where the respective associations issue certified papers. A breeding animal to be eligible for show in a registered (purebred) class must be owned by the exhibitor by June 15 of the current year and be registered by the official breed association. The registration paper or certificate must indicate one of the following (1) the name of the exhibitor (2) the name of the exhibitor and/or a co-owner who is an immediate member of the exhibitor's family (members of a household, including parents, brothers and sisters, and youth in care of the head of the household) or (3) the family or ranch name or parent's name. Copies of the registration paper or certificate must be submitted with State Fair entries; original registration papers or certificates must be presented at check-in. REGISTRATION MUST BE COMPLETED BY FAIR DATE. Any FFA or 4-H project animal that has been offered for auction, where the intent of the auction is change of ownership, is ineligible for the 4-H and FFA livestock classes at the Nebraska State Fair. This includes animals offered for sale in other events at the Nebraska State Fair, when the event is prior to the FFA and 4-H event the animal is entered in. A project animal that has been through a premium only auction is eligible to be exhibited at the Nebraska State Fair, provided it and its exhibitor meet all other ownership and eligibility requirements. A premium only auction is defined as an event in which change of ownership is never the intent; but the intent is only to provide a monetary premium to accompany the ribbon earned by the exhibit. 6. OWNERSHIP OF ANIMALS & POULTRY All animals and poultry in the FFA and 4-H Show must be owned by the exhibitor who entered it. Ownership of beef, sheep, swine, dairy, meat goats, and rabbits must be certified where required on the appropriate forms in the Extension Office or to the FFA Advisor. G21

4 Department G - General Rules All 4-H market animals (beef, sheep, swine & meat goats) must have a hair sample for DNA testing on file at Ak-Sar-Ben by the appropriate dates (April 15 for beef, June 15 for all other species) in order to be exhibited at the State Fair. FFA does not require DNA samples. In the case of dairy animals, some lease arrangements are acceptable, but must be certified on the ownership affidavit housed in the State 4-H Office. Both 4-H and FFA dairy affidavits are to be sent to the State 4-H Office. All livestock and small animal identification sheets are available at Market Beef and SECOND YEAR BUCKET CALVES must be identified by April 1 st. Market Beef and Second Year Bucket Calves in the Rate of Gain Contest must also be weighed by April 1 st. All Small Animals affidavits are due May 1 st Small Animal Form -This form is for all small animals except for rabbits. Please use a separate form for each species. Cats Need Small Animal Form and Cat Vaccination Record. The Cat Vaccination Record Form SF262 is to be filled out and signed by your vet. 4-H members or their families can administer all vaccinations except rabies which must be given by a licensed veterinarian. Dogs Need Small Animal Form and Dog Vaccination Record. The Dog Vaccination Record Form SF263 also is to be filled out and signed by your vet. 4-H members or their families can administer all vaccinations except rabies which must be given by a licensed veterinarian. Horses must be identified by June 1 st. All other livestock (including Bucket Calves and Bottle Lambs) are by June 15 th. These forms are available at the Extension Office if you don t have Internet. Livestock tags will be given out when your turn in your affidavit sheets G22

SHOWMAN SUBSTITUTIONS - An animal must be shown by the FFA or 4-H owner who entered it unless the exhibitor is excused by the Division Superintendent because of serious illness, disability due to an injury (e.g. broken arm or leg) or conflict with other livestock classes in a 4-H or FFA show. An exhibitor who has more than one animal in a class need not secure approval for another FFA or 4-H member, eligible to exhibit livestock, to show the additional animal in the class. Substitute showmen must be a 4-H or FFA member exhibiting at a current County Fair or State Fair FFA or 4-H livestock show. All substitute showmen should wear an exhibitor number identifying him/her as a substitute showman (available when you pick up your exhibitor number). If you are showing for another exhibitor you will take off your identification back tag number that is on white paper and/or put over your tag the Substitute Showman Back Tag that will be on colored paper. It will have SUB on it. You will need to fill in the number of the exhibitor who owns the animal - the person that you are the Substitute Showman for. This will help the ringman and the announcer get the ownership correct. 8. CHAMPIONS - Any State Fair beef, dairy, sheep, swine, meat goat, dog, companion animal, poultry or rabbit entry must be awarded a first or second purple ribbon in a class to be eligible to compete for champion or reserve champion. At the County Fair, this will be the Judge s discretion. 9. NO WITHDRAWLS At State Fair - Animals selected as division champions and reserve champions cannot be withdrawn from the grand champion drive. Violation of this rule may result in disqualification and exhibitor may be barred from future participation at the Nebraska State Fair. 10. BACK TAGS - Each 4-H and FFA exhibitor will have their own unique number printed on a back tag. Exhibitors must have this number on their back while exhibiting animals. 11. QUALITY ASSURANCE TRAINING - All exhibitors in beef, dairy cattle, meat goats, poultry, rabbits, sheep and swine must have received Quality Assurance training or testing through a UNL Extension program or high school agriculture education program prior to the fair. Program attendance or completion of a test in the county extension office is required. Completion of training will be certified by an FFA advisor or county extension staff. 12. GROOMING OF LIVESTOCK - Preparation and grooming of an animal should be the primary responsibility of the exhibitor, however assistance may be provided by other 4-H or FFA exhibitors and/or immediate family G23

6 Department G - General Rules members including: brothers, sisters and/or parents/legal guardian of the exhibitor. FFA Advisors may assist as an educational experience for youth. A. Pigs must be shown without oil, powder, or any other coat dressing compounds considered objectionable by the packer. Pigs found in violation will be disqualified. B. Exhibitors shall not add materials, natural or synthetic, which extend body shapes beyond normal limits. C. By the order of the State Fire Marshall - The use of flammable and combustible grooming sprays inside the barns is strictly forbidden. These types of materials must be used outside of the buildings only. 13. DRESS CODE - Exhibitors showing all animals are required to wear official FFA or 4-H dress. For 4-H a T-shirt or a white shirt or blouse with the official 4-H Chevron attached or a 4-H t-shirt and dark blue jeans. Dairy and dairy goat exhibitors may wear dark blue jeans or white pants. Hard, nonslip soled shoes or boots are required. For horse exhibitors, hard soled shoes or boots are considered safe and appropriate. Boots with waffle-type tread greater than or equal to ⅛ will not be allowed in riding classes. While hard soled shoes are not required for the cat, dog and small animal shows, exhibitors are required to wear closed toed shoes with non-slip soles. No hats, caps, or other types of headgear are to be worn in the show ring with the exception of the horse exhibitors where a western hat must be worn and should stay on during the performance. Hats are optional only in barrel racing and pole bending and hat must stay on in barrel racing and pole bending when rider crosses start/finish line. Exhibitors shall not display local, county, commercial, or other identification while showing their animals - except official 4-H and such identification the show ring may require. The horse armband must be worn on the left arm. If you are not in the correct dress code you will be dropped one ribbon placing. 14. RIGHT TO EXCUSE - The superintendent of the area and the show management has the right to excuse any exhibit from the County Fair or Nebraska State Fair if the exhibit is not a quality exhibit. SHOWING AND HANDLING PRACTICES: The use of showing and/or handling practices that may be considered objectionable or abusive, such as striking or slapping lambs and exhibiting G24

7 G25 Department G - General Rules the lamb with its feet off the ground, are not acceptable. The use of such practices may result in the lowering of a ribbon placing. An animal that becomes wild and uncontrollable during the show may be declared ineligible by the Livestock Superintendent. 15. ETHICS AND DISCLOSURE FORM - All State Fair livestock exhibitors must submit a signed ethics and statement of disclosure to the show superintendent for each species they are exhibiting at the time of check in. This form shall serve as an acknowledgement of having read the fair book and a willingness to abide by it. On the county level you may be asked to submit the above form. HEALTH REQUIREMENTS COUNTY FAIR REGULATIONS ONLY Only animals not showing signs of infectious or contagious diseases will be allowed to show. UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY ANIMALS UNDER QUARANTINE BE EXHIBITED. RINGWORM AND WARTS POLICY - Animals that have active ringworm or visible warts or abscesses, will not be allowed entry into the Boyd County Fair for exhibition. The inspecting veterinarian may judge the ringworm to be inactive if the lesioned area is not encrusted and hair has begun regrowth in the area and so stated on the health certificate. Animals with warts that are visible by a hands-off inspection will not be allowed to remain on the premises and be exhibited. The inspecting veterinarian may release at the discretion of an appointed sub-committee of the Fair Livestock Committee any animal that shows signs of illness. CLUB LAMB FUNGUS POLICY - Superintendents shall have the authority to request lambs be inspected, by the official veterinarian, for club lamb fungus. Sheep that have active club lamb fungus, as determined by the inspecting veterinarian, will be removed immediately from the grounds by the owner and not be allowed to show. BEEF AND DAIRY CATTLE - See above ringworm, wart and abscess policy. No tuberculosis or Brucellosis tests are required to exhibit. SHEEP AND DAIRY GOATS - See ringworm and abscess policy. All sheep and goats being exhibited, except wethers, need to be individually identified with USDA Official ID. Under no circumstances may sheep and goats be

8 G26 Department G - General Rules exhibited which originate from scrapie-source flocks or scrapie-infected flocks. MEAT GOATS - See ringworm and abscess policy. All does must have official USDA identification with the scrapie eradication program. Under no circumstances may sheep and goats be exhibited which originate from scrapie-source flocks or scrapie-infected flocks. Goats must be born no earlier than January 1 of the present year. Minimum weight requirement is 50 lbs. with a recommendation of lbs. being optimal. There is a limit of 3 market goats and 3 breeding goats. A goat shown in one area can not be shown in the other. Market goats may be doe or wether kids or a combination of both. NO BILLIES! Goats are to have milk teeth and there shall be no evidence of breaking of the skin or eruption of the two permanent front teeth. Goats must be uniformly slick shorn with 3/8 inch of hair or less from the knee and up. Goats must have horns blunted. Dehorning is acceptable and preferred. They are to be shown with neck chains or smooth collars only. Exhibitors must own each animal and have a 4-H id ear tag for each animal and be identified on the Meat Goat ID sheet. Market goats may be doe or wether kids. Short scrotum, cryptorchid and buck kids are not eligible. All market goats will be weighed and divided into classes based on total numbers and weight range. Does and wethers will show together. Exhibitors will not slap or brace the animal or lift the front legs off the ground while in the show ring. STATE FAIR WEIGHT LIMITS - Market goats must weigh a minimum of 60 lbs at check-in. Goats under 60 lbs will be allowed to check-in, but will not be eligible for purple ribbons. HORSE - No coggins test is required. SWINE a. No Breeding Class Swine will be exhibited. b. Market Swine must be accompanied by a health certificate. Health certificates are valid for 30 days, and all animals exhibited shall be INDIVIDUALLY IDENTIFIED and herd number recorded on the health certificate. Only animals not showing signs of infectious or contagious diseases will be allowed to show. Swine must originate from a Stage IV or V area, or from a pseudorabies qualified herd that is testing 10% monthly, or be individually tested and be classified negative for pseudorabies within 30

9 Department G - General Rules days prior to the fair. Health certificates must list the respective exhibition as consignee. c. All swine must have health papers and identification checked before entering the fairgrounds. d. All swine not meeting health requirements will be immediately removed from the grounds by the owner. STATE FAIR WEIGHT LIMITS: Market hogs have a lower weight limit of 230 lbs to qualify for the regular show. Market hogs have an upper weight limit of 320 lbs to qualify for the regular show. All light and heavy hogs will be allowed to show, but will not be eligible for purple ribbons or to compete for division awards. No weight allowances will be given. No hogs will be reweighed.a weigh back will be incorporated for all division winners. A 5% variance from weigh-in weight will be allowed. Animals not meeting the 5% variance either above or below the weigh-in weight will be lowered one ribbon group and will not be eligible for any champion awards. **UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES MAY ANY ANIMALS UNDER QUARANTINE BE EXHIBITED.** Nebraska State Fair: All animals exhibited at the Nebraska State Fair (except dogs, cats, rabbits, poultry and pigeons) originating in Nebraska, must be accompanied by a health certificate. All animals exhibited shall be individually identified on health certificate. Health certificates are valid for 30 days EXCEPT sheep. Sheep (except wool breeds of breeding sheep) must be shorn prior to being examined by a veterinarian. A health certificate must be issued within 10 days of exhibition. See State Fair regulation book for additional details. 17. BRAND INSPECTION - All 4-H show cattle that are moved, driven, shipped or transported, in any manner from any point within the brand area to any point outside the brand area shall first have a brand inspection by the Nebraska Brand Committee, and a certificate of inspection issued. A copy of such certificate shall accompany the cattle and shall be retained by all persons transporting or moving such cattle, as a permanent record. The responsibility of insuring the cattle are inspected prior to removal falls equally on the owner, seller, shipper, person, persons, firm, motor carrier, railroad company, or other carrier or corporation of his, her, its, or their agent or agents or servant or servants moving, driving, shipping, or transporting. Cattle that are transported in and out of the brand area numerous times for showing may qualify for a show permit, utilized for show purposes only and valid for 1 year from date of issuance. ALL SHEEP AND GOAT TAGGING/ID CHECK All 4-H Boyd County Fair sheep and goats must be tagged in front of Extension personnel. Dates will be announced. Tagging/ID checks for all sheep and all goats (meat and dairy) will be in the Boyd County Courthouse parking lot. All dairy goats will be required to have a 4-H tag or a tattoo. All meat goats and sheep will be required to have a 4-H tag. If your animals have a tattoo then you do not need to tag them. Clover Kid Lambs and Goats do not need to be tagged in front of Extension personnel but they still need the necessary 4-H ear tag and the scrapies tag and the animal affidavit turned in by the due date. State Fair and/or Ak-Sar-Ben Animal Show Rules and Regulations are different than the Boyd County Rules. If you are interested in showing at another show please ask at the Extension Office for a complete list of those requirements. 19. LIVESTOCK ENTRIES - All Swine, Sheep and Goats MUST be entered PRIOR to 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Weigh-in will be at 7:00 p.m. See health regulations which pertain to the exhibition of swine. See weight requirements for meat goats. Swine show will start at 9:00 a.m. on Thursday and will be followed by the dairy, goat and sheep shows. There will be no carcass contest for the swine. All Dairy (Cows and Goats) MUST be entered PRIOR to 9:00 a.m. on Thursday with only the lactating dairy animals released after the conclusion of the Livestock Judging Contest. Bucket Calf and Bottle Lamb Record Books are due in the Extension Office on the Thursday prior to the fair. Bucket calves and bottle lambs MUST be entered PRIOR to 8:30 a.m. Thursday with the interviews to begin at 9:00 a.m. Bucket calves and bottle lambs will be led into the ring after being judged only to receive ribbons and trophies. Livestock Judging Contest to be held after the Sheep Show. All Beef animals except stocker feeders and junior breeding heifers MUST be entered on Thursday PRIOR to 8:00 p.m. Stocker Feeders and Junior Breeding Heifers MUST be entered PRIOR to 9:00 a.m. Friday morning. The Beef show will start at 9:00 a.m. on Friday

11 Department G - General Rules Livestock bonus auction will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday evening. Each 4-H and FFA livestock exhibitor will be allowed one project animal (swine, bucket calf, bottle lamb, dairy, goat, sheep or beef). It will be the responsibility of the exhibitor to be signed up by no later than 1 hour after the Beef Show. Sign up sheets will be available at the Livestock Barns. Exhibitors should send out letters to potential bidders. See web page for letter. All livestock will be released after the conclusion of the livestock sale on Friday evening. No animals shall be released prior to or during the sale. Horse show will be held on Saturday with registration at 8:45 a.m. and show to begin at 9:00 a.m. at the Krieger Arena. 20. A 4-H MEMBER IS LIMITED TO EXHIBITING: one bucket calf, two bulls (both can be bull calves, OR both can be yearling bulls OR can be one of each), two beef breeding cattle (both can be junior breeding heifers, OR both can be senior breeding heifers OR can be one of each), two stocker feeder calves, three dairy cattle, two market beef, three market pigs, three dairy goats, three market meat goats, three breeding meat goats, one bottle lamb, two breeding yearling ewes or lambs, two feeder lambs, two market lambs, two ram lambs, four rabbit entries, two dog entries and two cat entries. A pen of 3 market beef, a pen of 3 stocker feeders, a pen of 3 market swine, a pen of 3 breeding sheep, a pen of 3 feeder lambs and a pen of 3 market lambs, and a pen of three ram lambs may be exhibited in addition to the above entries. A pen of three market beef steers or heifers is an added exhibit. Therefore, the market beef project has three exhibits: two individual and one pen of three. Average Daily Gain rates will be figured and ribbons on both the ADG and the final ring placing will be given. A cow-calf project is an added entry. The cow can be shown in a cow-calf pair without any prerequisite. It must be, however, a project carried by the 4-H'er during the current year. There is no limit on horse entries for 4-H'ers. Any eligible horse (previously identified according to regulations) can be ridden/shown in any class. Regulations for exhibitor age, horse eligibility and other pertinent details will be as written in the green 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4H373). The above rules stating numbers of livestock to be exhibited is the same for 4-H and FFA. You can show in both 4-H and FFA but the number exhibited will be a total of both. For example, you can show 2 bulls in any of the following ways: 2 as 4-H bulls OR 2 as FFA bulls OR 1 4-H bull and 1 FFA bull. You CAN NOT show 2 4-H bulls and 2 FFA bulls. This applies to all animals. G29

12 G30 Department G - General Rules 21. MISCELLANEOUS - a). All beef breeds need to be 7/8 purebred to show in any beef breed class. b). The exhibitor is responsible for the care and feeding of his or her livestock. c). The animals shown must be those being carried by the member as his or her project. d). No muzzles or similar devices will be allowed on beef animals at this show. Halters with throat straps, nose leads, barbed or studded show halter chain leads and other equipment determined to be distracting or severe to the animal by the division superintendent will not be permitted.e). Bucket Calves, Market Beef, Stocker Feeder, Meat Goats, Bottle Lambs, Market Lambs, Feeder Lambs, Breeding Heifers, and Breeding Ewes are ear tagged for the county fair BUT if they are taken to another show, they may need another form of identification. Contact the Extension Office for more details. 22. EWES born January 1, of current year or after are classed as lambs. Those dropped during the prior year are yearlings. All breeding ewes will be mouthed for age. (Ewe lambs must have all lamb or temporary teeth present; yearling ewes can have yearling teeth but cannot have two-yearold teeth up.) Wether and ewe lambs are eligible for market classes. Ram lambs are not eligible for market lambs. For State Fair Market Lambs - Market lambs will be dry, have all covers removed, and have been slick shorn to no more than 1/8 within the previous 10 days. 23. A STOCKER FEEDER HEIFER may be shown as a stocker feeder heifer or a junior breeding heifer BUT not as both. The premium will be the same as for a stocker feeder. Stocker feeder heifers and junior breeding heifers are calves that were born during the current year beginning January 1. Senior breeding heifers are also termed yearlings and were born the previous year beginning January 1. A senior breeding heifer could have been shown at last years fair as a junior breeding heifer. Cow and/or Cow-Calf Pair - Entry is either a dry cow or a cow-calf pair. Since only the cow is judged the calf can be shown as a stocker feeder heifer or steer, junior breeding heifer or a junior bull calf. Both the cow and the calf need to be identified. 24. Bulls born in the year preceding the date of the show must have nose rings. 25. BUCKET CALF AND BOTTLE LAMB PROJECTS - ALL bucket calves and bottle lambs in this project must have been tagged and identified on the ID

13 affidavit by June 15 and filed at the office. Department G - General Rules A bucket calf is an orphan or newborn calf born after January 1 and before June 1 of the current year; male or female; dairy, beef, or cross; and fed on bucket or bottle. A bucket calf can be shown as bucket calf (Department G Division 7 Classes ) and in dairy showmanship (Department G Division 40) or beef showmanship (Department G Division 10). These calves cannot be shown in any other classes under dairy or beef. A Second year bucket calf can be shown as second year bucket calf (class number 904, 905, 906, or 907) and in dairy showmanship (Department G, Division 40) or beef showmanship (Department G, Division 10) or in the Average Market Beef Rate of Gain Contest (Department G Division 11). These calves cannot be shown in any other classes under dairy or beef. A bottle lamb is an orphan or newborn lamb born after January 1 and before June 1 of the current year; male or female; meat breed lamb or wool breed lamb; and fed on bucket or bottle. A bottle lamb can be shown in bottle lamb (Department G Division 7 Classes ) and shown in sheep showmanship (Department G Division 30). These lambs cannot be shown in any other classes under sheep. 26. State Fair Market Goats - Weight Limits - Market goats must weigh a minimum of 50 lbs at check-in. Goats under 50 lbs will be allowed to checkin, but will not be eligible for purple ribbons. 27. Rabbit - Tattoos and class information must match the information found on the 4-H Affidavit form. Rabbits whose tattoos are not readable or do not match the 4-H Affidavit will not be allowed to show at the County Fair or State Fair. Tattoos that have faded or are no longer readable should be re-done prior to either fair. For State Fair - Showmanship exhibitors are asked to bring their own carpet square or mat for rabbit showmanship. 28 Absolutely No Hay or Feed is allowed in the Beef Barns. Please feed your beef outside of the beef barns. All exhibitors are reminded that they must clean up their pens, stalls, and feeding areas at the conclusion of the show and or premium auction. Premium checks may be withheld if pens, stalls, and feeding areas are not cleaned in an acceptable manner. G31

14 Department G - General Rules 29. Absolutely No Clipping or Blocking Chutes/Tables will be allowed inside of the livestock barns in order to accommodate all exhibits. In case of inclement weather, chutes and tables may be put in stalls where your livestock would be tied or penned. Livestock will always take priority over equipment. 30. Presentations using live animals will be scheduled by the Extension Office. Livestock of any kind may be used. Health papers are required. Animal presentations will be held at the same time as all other presentations. 31. Livestock Early Release - The Appointed sub-committee members of the Livestock Committee reserves the right to release all livestock early for the welfare of the livestock. If the livestock sub-committee has not released the livestock and you take your animals home, you will lose all premiums earned on that animal. SHOWMANSHIP BASIS FOR JUDGING - Showmanship is based on preparation of animal for show, their apparent training and the appearance and behavior of the showman. Minor technical points are not to be over-emphasized, nor do minor infractions disqualify. Primarily in showmanship it is the skill of the showman in presenting the animal before the judge that counts while individual excellence of the animal does not. Information relative to the basis for judging dairy showmanship is found in EC , "Score Card for Judging, Fitting and Showing Contests". Information on livestock showmanship contests is found in 4-H 357, "Guide for Evaluating Livestock Showmanship Contests." Both are available at the Extension Office. Beef Showmanship- State Fair - Beef showmanship will be Blow and Go; animals are clipped, blown and brushed or combed to enhance their appearance. Guidelines for the State Fair Blow and Go show: 1. 4-H beef animals will be shown free of any compounds that are applied by aerosol propellants. 2. Alcohol, water or any water- or alcohol-based products with no adhesive qualities are permitted. 3. Any compounds that have adhesive qualities or alter the color of the animal are forbidden. G32

22 HORSE Department G - Horse The horse show will be divided into two divisions. Junior Division will be ages 13 and younger prior to January 1. Senior Division will be ages 14 and older prior to January 1. There will be no limit on entries for 4-H exhibitors. 4-H and FFA exhibitors (who have shown in 4-H or FFA horse competition this year) are not eligible to compete in the open class show. Senior Division Horse Exhibitors who will exhibit in the Boyd County Horse Show must have passed Level 1 of the Horse Advancement Levels prior to showing in the Boyd County Fair Horse Show. Information about Horse Advancement Levels can be found at: DRESS CODE - Exhibitors showing horses are required to wear an all white shirt or blouse with convertible collars and dark blue jeans. No decorative embellishments on either the jeans or shirt/blouse. A belt is recommended. A 4-H arm band is required for Horse Shows and is to be worn on the left arm above the elbow. Hard soled shoes or boots are considered safe and appropriate. Boots with waffle-type tread greater than or equal to ⅛ will not be allowed in riding classes. No hats, caps, or other types of headgear are to be worn in the show ring with the exception of the horse exhibitors where a western hat must be worn and should stay on during the performance. Hats are optional only in barrel racing and pole bending and hat must stay on in barrel racing and pole bending when rider crosses start/finish line. Exhibitors shall not display local, county, commercial, or other identification while showing their animals - except official 4-H and such identification the show ring may require. See show guide for additional dress code requirements. Any eligible horse (previously identified by June 1 according to regulations) can be ridden/shown in any class. Regulations for exhibitor age, horse eligibility and other pertinent details will be as written in the 4-H Horse Show and Judging Guide (4-H373). Halter horses must be shown with halter. No loose horses in arena. A stallion weanling was born during the current year. A project horse may be carried jointly by a member of a family and one nonfamily member with the management of the horse on an equal basis. Both 4-H members must be enrolled in the same county 4-H program. The term G40

A single horse may not be entered or ridden in a class or event by more than one person, even though the horse is jointly owned. 25 RABBITS Department G -Rabbits Information on the basis for judging rabbits is found in the 4-H Rabbit project manual. The participant may use any rabbit they choose, so long as it was raised and trained by the 4-H'er. 2 rabbits/class with no more than 4 rabbits total. All rabbits must be identified by May 1. Tattoos and class information must match the information found on the 4-H Affidavit form. Rabbits whose tattoos are not readable or do not match the 4-H Affidavit will not be allowed to show at the County or State Fair. Tattoos that have faded or are no longer readable should be re-done prior to either fair. For State Fair - Fancy breed rabbits will be divided into the following age divisions: Junior Six months old and younger. Senior Over six months old. Note: A Fancy Breed Rabbit that is exactly six months old on show day will be shown as a Junior Division rabbit. 26 CATS Department G -Cats GENERAL INFORMATION - Cats should be free of fleas, ticks, ear mites, ring worms, any internal and external parasite and infectious diseases. Cats are required to have current rabies, distemper, panleucopenia, rhino tracheitis, and calici virus. Cats must either have a current feline leukemia vaccination or proof of a negative test within 180 days of the show. Proof of vaccinations must be sent in with registration. Participants should have their veterinarian fill out and sign the Nebraska State Fair Cat Vaccination Record Form SF H ers vaccinating their own cats must provide proof by including a statement from their vet on the Vaccination Record Form or by including the vaccination labels on the form and having it signed by a parent. A rabies vaccination is federally mandated to be given bya Certified Veterinarian ONLY. This vaccination must be current and include a veterinarian signature on the Vaccination Record Form. All cats brought to the Small Animal Pre-Fair Day must show proof of vaccination at the time of entry. All cats must be identified by May 1. Initial shots must be given 30 days prior to the Small Animal Pre-Fair Day. Date of booster shots may be less than the 30 days prior to the show if you have been keeping your vaccinations current. If this is the case bring both current certificate of vaccinations (this years) and expired certificate of vaccinations (last years). Cats may be vaccinated at 3 months of age. If they are vaccinated before they are 1 year of age then they must be re-vaccinated within 1 year of the first vaccination. If the first vaccination is given at the age of 1 year or older then the vaccination is good for 3 years. If the cat is not declawed, the claws must be clipped. No expectant or nursing mother cats may enter. Cats shall be free of discharge from the nose and eyes. Any cat not meeting these health requirements will not be judged and will be asked to leave the show. Cats that become difficult to handle may be judged in the cage at the judge s discretion. Cats must be brought in carriers. Cats will remain in carriers except for when being judged. The exhibitor may provide food, water and litter for the cat in the carrier if necessary. Exhibitors may want to provide a cover for he carrier to prevent their cat from seeing other cats. Kittens under 4 months of age WILL NOT be accepted. Cat and kitten classes will be divided into two groups - House and Outdoor. NOTE: The current vaccination forms and identification sheets for all small animals will be DUE MAY 1 with all shots current. This means that by May 1 the forms and vaccinations are due even if May 1 is more than 30 days prior to the show. This will eliminate the problem of making sure we have G44

27 Department G -Cats had at least 30 days between vaccinations and show. This will set a standard date that will not change from year to year as to when the Small Animal forms and vaccinations are due. DIVISION CAT CLASSES 2 cats per exhibiter. 28 DOG Department G -Dogs Procedure: Those procedures described in 4-H 420, Guidelines for Nebraska 4-H Dog Shows will be followed. It is the dog exhibitor s responsibility to pick up after their dogs at all times. Dogs soiling in the show ring (during a class) will be lowered one ribbon placing. Dogs soiling anywhere on the show grounds with no pick up will be disqualified from all entered classes on that show day regardless of the person who is holding the dog leash. Dog Eligibility: Exhibitor should provide primary care and training for the dog. The dog should reside with the exhibitor or be cared for the by the exhibitor the majority of the year. All dogs must be immunized with Distemper, Hepatitis, Parvo and rabies. Dog Vaccination Record Form SF293 and Small Animal Identification Sheet are due May 1. Initial shots should be given 30 days in advance of the Small Animal Pre-Fair Day. Date of booster shots may be less than the 30 days prior to the Small Animal Pre-Fair Day. Bring both current (this years) and expired (last years) certificates of vaccination. Dogs may be vaccinated as young as 3 months of age. If they are vaccinated before they are 1 year of age then they must be re-vaccinated within 1 year of the first vaccination. If the first vaccination is given at the age of 1 year or older then the vaccination is good for 3 years. The distemper, hepatitis, parvo shot is an annual booster shot. All required vaccinations must be given within 1 to 3 years of the show date based on label guidelines. All vaccinations must be in effect at the time of the shows. Explanation: Same vaccinations are viable for one year and some vaccinations are viable for three years but are specifically designed and administered according to their label. It is not acceptable nor allowed to vaccinate a dog with a 1 year vaccine and plant ot have it in effect for 3 years. The form must be submitted for each dog according to the entry guideline due date or will not be allowed to show. A dog that is exhibited must be 6 months or older at State Fair time. Agility dogs must be 18 months or older to participate in the State Fair competition. Female dogs in season will not be permitted to be shown. Overly aggressive dogs may be disqualified at the discretion of the judge or superintendent. Lame or crippled dogs will not be permitted to show if it is determined by the show superintendent that it is affecting the health of the dog. Nonentered dogs and puppies are not allowed. Baiting with food or a toy is not permitted and is cause for disqualification. Handlers may use baiting action without food or toys. The judge has the authority to disqualify violators. 2 dogs per exhibitor. G46
