(Please see map on back cover). The cattle were videoed on Feb 8th and displayed on Thanks to Frontier Live Productions. The cattle will be sold on the video at 1:00PM MST in a live auction at the Milk River Pavilion. Registered bidders can bid online or by telephone during the sale. Our partners, Score Angus and Kendall Koss have a nice offering of registered Black Angus bulls. What is for sale and what is the base price? All cattle can be viewed at (see page 2 for more information on Frontier Production Sales). There will be weight updates and ultrasound information available on supplemental sheets on sale day and on our website prior to the sale. Veseth Cattle Co will have 65 bulls for sale. The 2018 bull base price is $2000, including wintering and breeding soundness evaluation at no additional cost. Bulls will be ready for delivery between May 5th and May 15th. The ranch will have a group of 47 heifers calving from the second cycle from the natural service sires. We can t keep bulls out of our heifers, so we just left our calving ease Red angus sires and had the Vet call the late heifers. These heifers will calve from April 20th to May 10th. The base price on the late bred heifers is $1350. The ranch doesn t retain any late bred heifers so there will be AI sired and purebred cattle included in this group. All the females will be sold on a gate cut basis. These bred heifers will be on display at the Score Angus Ranch before the sale. A sample will be taken to the Milk River Pavillion on sale day. There will be 100 Veseth bangs vaccinated red heifer calves for sale. On the video, 220 head of heifers were videoed, but only the top 100 will be offered for sale on February 21 st. We will weigh and have average weights on all the females. If the buyer takes all the Veseth heifers there is a second pen of consigned heifers from Peigneux Brothers. The Peigneux Bros heifers are Veseth genetics. The base price on heifer calves is $925/ hd. The heifers will be weighed just prior to sale day. Veseth Cattle Co will sell 70Short term cows to calve April 1st though May 15th.There will be a sheet posted with the cows age and average nursing ratios. These cows are mandatory culled at 11 years old. Most of the cows will be younger as I cull for performance and condition every year under our year-round grazing program. Many producers have gotten several years of use from these short-term cows with better winter conditions. The base price on the cull cows is $800/hd. These cows will be weighed prior to the sale. Veseth Cattle will also sell 30 late calving cows to calve from May 15th until June 15th. There will be a sheet posted with the cow s age. All the cows will be weighed prior to the sale. Traditionally these cows weigh 1400 to 1500 pounds per head.

3 How does the sale work? On February 21st, at 1PM MST, we will conduct a live auction in catalog order via auctioneer at the Milk River Pavilion. Our auctioneer, Collin Gibbs, will pick 6 of the top bulls and we will put them in the Top Pen. These bulls will be sold first, followed by the rest of the bulls in catalog order. Prospective buyers can sign up for buyer numbers at the front door of the pavilion. A complimentary lunch will be available starting at 11:30 AM. All cattle will be started at base price; anything unsold will be available at private treaty. The bulls will be sold individually and the females by gate cut based on the buyers head count needs. All females will sell FOB (freight on buyer) for delivery as soon as possible after the sale. The bulls will be wintered at Score Angus, evaluated for breeding soundness, and will be ready for delivery on May 5th 15th, Veseth Cattle Co provides free delivery of bulls to central points up to 350 miles, and beyond that distance is at cost. This way, bulls can be delivered in truckload lots. We have a long-distance hauler we contract with for cattle sold out of Montana. Ultrasound: The bulls will be ultrasounded on January 29, Weights will also be updated at this time. This information will be available on and as supplement sheets on sale day. Are there discounts on cattle? There are discounts. On bulls, 50% of the purchase price is due on sale day, with the remainder due at delivery. Discounts will be taken out of the final payment. If paid in full, the discounts will be taken out on sale day. Females will be paid in full after the sale. Volume Discount: Every bull bought after the first bull will receive a 1% discount on each additional bull, with a maximum of 10%. Bulls for families that run in common, such as the Matador Grassbank and Grazing Associations would qualify for a 2% discount. There is no volume discount on the females. Young Rancher Discount: I sympathize with young people trying to get a start in agriculture today. It was tough when I started and it is only tougher now. Anybody 25 years and younger gets a 10% discount on all breeding cattle purchases. Anybody 26 to 35 years old gets a 5% discount on all breeding cattle purchases. This is for young people buying in their own name and brand and not for old established ranches. What traits do we select for in the cowherd? First, we select for functional traits including disposition, udder quality, feet and legs, fleshing ability and moderate mature size. Secondly, we select for calving ease: you will find most of the AI and natural service sires we use are in the top percentages within their breed for calving ease. On the ranch, the cow is on her own. The 2-year-old heifers are calved out earlier so they can be watched more often. For the rest, I just go through and tag once per day. Next, we select for a moderate, maternal cow with longevity (stayability) that lives on minimal inputs. Our cows usually graze year-round with only mineral supplement, plus protein supplement during the winter in semi-arid conditions in the Missouri River breaks. Fourth, we put as much growth into the cattle as we can without wrecking functional traits. We select first for calving ease and moderate sized cows with excellent maternal abilities and then we aim to improve carcass traits without wrecking the rest of the selection criteria. How do we make genetic progress? The ranch has AI ed on and off for over 35 years. Over the last nineteen years, we have AI ed cows to proven bulls that are producing herd sires across the country in reputation breeder s herds. Our average cost per AI calf on the ground is 100+ dollars. Only 20% of the male calves born on the ranch will be sold as bulls. This year we started off saving 146 bull calf prospects from our best cows sired by the best proven AI bulls in the industry and ½ of those bulls are culled for 20 separate selection criteria along the way. The ranch tries to keep good records, recording weights and frame scores on calves and cows every year along with cow body conditions scores at preconditioning udder and disposition scores at calving; we record lifetime production on the cows. Each year, I get a ranch list from my best cow to the worst cow in the herd. We haul the best cow off to embryo transfer to produce herd bulls for the ranch and we haul our worst cows off to become hamburger. Everybody else fits in between. I do cut some corners, most of the cattle at Veseth Cattle Co are not registered Red Angus. I don t have time or resources to accomplish that goal. The ranch does have partners that have bought and brought the ranch some very nice registered Red Angus cows. Between the ranch and our partners we brought 170 cows into the ranch program. This portion accounts for about 80 head of the 600+ cowherd and there will be purebred cattle represented in the sale. The ranch also utilizes some cross breeding. We keep the cow herd predominantly Red Angus for their disposition, maternal traits, pigmentation, adaptability to our limited resource environment, and marketability. Our cross-breeding program focuses on maternal breeds as that genetic part of hybrid vigor pays the highest dividends with a 25% increase in life time production for the crossbred cow. Hybrid vigor, breed complementarity and a larger gene pool to select from can gain the rancher 30 to 40 lbs. per every 100 lbs. of straight bred calf raised on a ranch. Bull birth weights: We only weigh the 2-year olds calves at birth. The 2-year-old cows calves are weighed on a Gallagher scale. The cow herd s bull calves are hoof taped due to time factors and land topography; I tag everything myself. The hoof tape is an estimate of birth weight; I think it is usually within 5 lbs. of the actual birth weight. These cattle are bred to have very few calving problems. To my knowledge, during the 2016 and 2017 calving seasons we did not lose a calf to dystocia out of heifers and cows. I did not pull a calf out of 500 cows in In 2017 I pulled one small breech AI calf. We did not lose a cow to calving problems in either of those years. The cows might not be trouble free but they have come a long way in the past 35 years. Two years and 1000 births with 1 pull in the cows. Our bulls are smaller than bulls at most other sales. There are good reasons why they are smaller at this time in their lives. Our bulls are born in April, not in January. These cattle are moderate framed cattle. Elephant cattle are bigger and have higher maintenance requirements. Our cattle live in the Missouri River breaks, without mountain meadow or irrigated pasture. We usually graze our cow herd year-round without harvested feedstuffs i.e. hay, haylage or silage, except in the worst conditions. If the bulls gain too much on test we put them on a diet so we don t wreck their feet. I believe that the overfeeding of young bulls and selling obese bulls reduces the productive life of bulls by 25% to 50%. We have a lot of customers that report using Veseth Cattle Co. bulls until they are 8 or 9 years old. These are working cattle for working ranchers. 4 Veseth Cattle Co. Customer News Rheanna Messerly successfully showed a Veseth bred steer for FFA at the Phillips Co. fair. Out of 20 steers, she placed 3rd in both the live judging and in the carcass judging out of 20 steers. Good job, Rheanna! Stay tuned we know of 6 Veseth bred steers going to 3 different fairs in The ranch has a loaner cow program for local 4-H and FFA youth. Jacob Drabbs was the recipient of a three year old loaner cow last fall. This fall the cow brought in a calf nearly as big as she was so Jacob decided the steer was going to the fair next summer. Jacob weaned the calf a week before the fall fair steer weigh in. Jacob s steer initial weight was 824 lbs. That cow acclimated well to the Drabb s farm. Veseth Cattle sold the light end of our steers last spring to Double SS Ranch at O Neill, NE. The load was made up of steers from the ranch, customer cattle and our neighbor and longtime bull customer, Wes Koss. The steers weighed 654 lbs on April 18th On December 4, 2017, Double SS Ranch weighed the steers before going to the slaughter plant and they weighed 1625 lbs. They phoned up and wanted more feeder steers! We invited the Soukup s to our bull production sale to meet our bull customers and procure some more of those good feeder cattle. This year on the ranch was the driest year of keeping NOAA weather records for the last 57 years. We received 6.37 of annual precipitation and 1.57 of precipitation from March 1st to July 1st. Most of our neighbors thought we had hogged the rain too. Our neighbors and longtime bull customers, Barthelmess Ranch Co had a 97% conception rate under these conditions on their cow herd. While pregnancy testing at weaning, they also weighed their cow herd. The average cow weight in the Barthelmess cow herd in 2017 was 1245 lbs. These are moderate sized cows that rebreed and bring in a good calf every fall. The average cow weight at Veseth Cattle Co for 2016 was 1268 lbs. 5 High Performing Bulls (Group 1) Group 1 will include the high performing bulls from all groups. These bulls will sell first in the sale. Look for individual lots in the Performance Pen (Pen 1) on sale day. Lots to be sold: 24, 26, 30, 43, 46, and 56. Calving Ease (CE) Sires (Group 2) There are four sires in this group. I penned all the CE bulls together for my buyers to compare sire groups for the best red calving ease sires in the industry. I don t know where else you can find this many calving ease sires with this many calves. LSF Night Calver 9921W Reg.# Veseth herd abbreviation NC. This is a Ludvigson Stock Farm bred bull. He is one of the under-utilized sires in the Red Angus breed. My records show we calved around 100+ calves and pulled 6 calves without death loss due to dystocia. Veseth Cattle Co has used 95 sires in our AI program in the last 19 years. And Night Calver is 1 of 2 bulls we have used for 5 years and wouldlike to still use him. We love his daughters for their disposition, conformation and performance. NC ranks in the top 1% of the breed for the Herd Builder index and direct calving ease. The top 2% of the breed for the birth weight and milk. The top 3% of the breed for stayability. The top 1% of the breed for the GridMaster selection index and top 12% in yield grade and 13% for Ribeye area. Our ultrasound technician always finds an NC bull with an extra rib. These are exceptional cattle and the bulls offered here will be the last NC at Veseth Cattle Co. Redemption is the most used Red Angus sire in the breed for good reason; you can calve him on heifers and yet his calves will perform with anything on test! These are moderate, easy fleshing, thick made cattle with exceptional disposition. We have calved 36 heifers to RD and pulled 7 with no death loss. We have already bought Redemption semen for the next breeding season. We categorize him as a moderate calving ease sire. You will probably will have to try some of his calves. RD is the top 1% of the breed for herd builder selection index, GridMaster selection index and stayability. The top 10% of the breed for calving ease direct and birth weight. The top 15% for yearling weight. The top 20% for heifer pregnancy, marbling and carcass weight. VIC like his sire HXC Conquest 4405P is siring breed leading converters of feed to beef. Veseth Cattle Co bought 4 VIC ET flush brothers out of a Rimrock Ranch Cow from Sisters, OR with superior residual feed intake numbers or RFI. The VIC bulls in this offering are always the first at the feed bunk waiting for more feed. He was our highest performance weaning weight sire in the 2 year old cows this year. 6 Andras Fusion R236 ABS Sire - Reg.# Veseth herd abbreviation FUS. Fusion is an out cross bull going back to Angus bulls Mytty in Focus and Connealy Thunder. I thought the Mytty in Focus cattle were functional and maternal and wanted to sample the blood line. We had 20 FUS calves out of the 2 year old heifers and pulled 3 calves with no death loss. The FUS cattle are moderate, thick made and easy keeping; and have been gaining above average on test. So far we haven t assisted any calves in 8 births and it looks like he could be a premier calving ease bull. We sampled him again on this year s heifers. His calves are moderate, thick and we were pleased with average scrotal circumference on his first bull calves. BA stands out in the maternal traits. This sire is truly a living legend with breed leading maternal daughters and sons making herd bulls across the country. RK always sires some of our best bulls. They have added thickness and eye appeal. These will be the last RK sons at Veseth Cattle Co. He calves easily and has explosive curve bender growth. BP has 13 of 16 traits measured in the Red Angus breed that puts him in the top 35% of the breed. BP s had the highest average nursing ratio in our cow herd in We have used the Julian Nebula- Premier/Redemption bloodline every other generation three times. With phenomenal results every time. He has stand out sons including the sale starter. BP is in the top 1% for the Herd Builder (maternal) index and maternal calving ease; the top 5% for stayability; the top 6% for the Grid Master index, and marbling; the top 10% direct calving ease, the top 15% for yearling weight; the top 16% for birthweight and the top 21% for weaning weight. This is an Australian bred bull and is an outcross to American Red Angus. IO goes back to New Design on the Black Angus side. We sampled this sire and had his first calves this spring. I was so impressed with both the bull and heifer calves that I called Jeff Hould and asked him to get more semen on IO. Jeff looked throughout the ABS system and couldn t get any more semen. We used this good ABS son and this year we will use another Australian bull from the same breeder. We have 10 straws left of IO and we will use those in our Embryo transfer program. This is a rare opportunity in to buy IO sons. IO is top 6% for the Grid Master Index, top 7% for Marbling, top 8% for maintenance energy (small easy fleshing cows). The reason we use BCL in our program is that he puts a tremendous performance in a moderate birth weight/ frame score package. He is a tremendous R017 son with great growth and carcass numbers. While bangsing heifers Dr. Johnson commented on his daughters as her choice of the herd. These cattle are long bodied and gain on test exceptionally well. BCL is in the top 6% for the Grid Master Index, 9% for weaning weight, 10% for yearling weight, 12% for calving ease direct and carcass weight. 9 Leland Odessey Y290 Reg.# Veseth herd abbreviation LO. We selected LO on pedigree. LO is the first Leland Red Angus bull we have used in our program. LO sold for $30,000 in the Leland sale a few years back. We have used his sire, Glacier Chateau 744. That bull didn t stay in our AI program long, but we found out later his daughters were awesome cows and wanted to go back to that bloodline. When I saw a Chateau son out of the great Messimer Pandora cow family. This was my choice to carry on the Chateau line. He should be a true maternal legend. LO is in the top 11% for weaning weight and has good carcass numbers. We didn t have too many calves but we pulled 33% of this sire group. His calves seem to have more bone and birth weight so we placed a third of his calves into this moderate birthweight sire group. He also was the high performance group for the heifers in These are exceptional maternal cattle. MJ sire is Julian B571; the all time Red Angus data base leader for cow stayability. Out of the Messmer Pandora cow family that raised bulls standing at stud for Genex, ABS and Accelerated Genetics and is maternally related to the Leland Odyssey bull represented in group 3.
