There will be a meeting of these people on FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28 at 9:00 PM, at the 4-H Show Office. These people are responsible for their own county s behavior only. Any counties not represented at this meeting may have points deducted from their overall county score. Each county s Code of Practice & Dress Code Committee representatives are expected to bring the name and phone number for their county s contact for livestock emergencies to this meeting. The name and contact number will be posted in the barn in case a livestock emergency should arise so it s important that the contact is reachable at that number, throughout the duration of the show. CODE OF CONDUCT Below is the 4-H Nova Scotia Code of Conduct. At the beginning of each 4-H year, all registered 4-H members and volunteers sign the Code of Conduct. Non-observance towards any of these guidelines may result in disciplinary action as determined by 4-H Nova Scotia. The 4-H program encourages leadership qualities, develops strong citizens, and opens the door to many career choices. Our motto is Learn to Do by Doing ; members are expected to complete project requirements on their own. Parents, leaders and members are encouraged to coach, or lend a hand if necessary, but members must do their own project work. Attendees may not consume or possess alcohol at a 4-H event where underage 4-H members are present. This includes club, county and provincial events. Smoking is only permitted in designated areas at all 4-H Nova Scotia events. Anyone found to be under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs and behaving inappropriately or causing a disruption at a 4-H Nova Scotia function will be asked to leave. If the participant cannot be convinced to leave peacefully, the police may be asked to intervene. 4-H members, leaders, parents and guardians will conduct themselves in a courteous and respectful manner. They will exhibit good sportsmanship and will be positive role models to others. Respect the judges opinions and knowledge. Learn from the experience of being judged. Abuse by physical and non-physical means, or through communication, real or perceived, is not acceptable behavior. Profane or offensive language will not be tolerated. Remember that leaders are volunteers. Please respect the time that they are giving. Always try to thank them. Please keep all areas of the show grounds clean and free of litter. When you see garbage lying on the ground, please pick it up and put it in the nearest garbage container. The show s schedule is extremely full and must run on time to ensure all events happen. Please make sure you are on time for all your classes and events. Classes will not be held for late exhibitors. If your 10

12 class or event takes longer than anticipated and you are expected somewhere else for another class, ask your parent, leader, or someone from your county to let the organizers of the next event/class know that you will be unable to make it. Line-ups are to be expected at meal vendors with a crowd of this size. Please be patient and courteous to everyone. Make sure you allow time between your events for a wait in line at a food vendor, or ask someone else to get you something to eat. Ensure aisles in front of county displays are kept neat and tidy. Cars will only be allowed in designated parking areas. When 4-H ers come together for an event, they should have good times, good memories, good friends, and be good sports. Keep in mind that true success isn t being better than other competitors, but bettering your last effort. -Past 4-H er GENERAL INFORMATION Poultry and Waterfowl cages will be provided. Members participating in only showmanship class are asked to bring just the bird they are showing, and NOT their trio/pair. Also, poultry, waterfowl, rabbit and turkey members are required to bring their own food and water containers. Rabbit and Market Turkey members MUST provide their own cages and members are reminded of the SPCA size regulations, to which we must adhere. Rabbit members are asked to be sure the pans on their cages meet the guidelines as stated in the rabbit newsletter. Cages coming to the show must be as close as possible to the sizes outlined in the newsletters, with a maximum size of 2 x 2. The newsletter sizes will be used to allot spacing for each county. If cages are too big, some counties may have to stack cages or put them underneath their display, on the floor. Each county will be assigned Goat and Sheep pen(s). Efforts will be made to not have to mix different county s animals, but individual pens may need to be shared between counties, pending space. This means that 2 or more counties may have to share a pen if necessary based on size of pens, numbers of rams/ewes or goats, etc. from each section. Even within a county pen, goats may not get along together. Counties are responsible for roping off their own displays. REMEMBER TO BRING YOUR OWN ROPE or CREATE THE SECURITY FENCE INTO YOUR OVERALL DISPLAY. County life skills display space is allotted the same as last year. Guysborough will have 10 feet; all other counties have 20 feet. County Life Skills displays can be set-up between 1:30-9:30 PM on Friday. County Livestock displays can be set-up beginning at 11:00 on Friday morning; all livestock, except for cattle, can be moved in at this time. Cattle cannot be moved into stalls until after 1:00 PM. 11

13 Counties need to be ready to move projects from the judging area to the displays after 9:30 Friday evening. Counties with large livestock displays will be assigned a footage space for their tack and livestock combined. County entrants MUST share tack boxes and use their county trailer to hold hay, straw and tack for the weekend. Livestock display footage/space will not be known until the Friday morning of the show. All projects must be on display for the entire show. Any county dismantling displays before flag presentation will be subject to a points penalty, to be determined by the Executive of the Provincial Council, which will result in them beginning the next Provincial Show in a deficit position (2000, NS 4-H Council Annual Meeting). The gate and building security people have the responsibility to report counties violating these requirements to the 4-H Show Office. General Leaders are asked to make each family aware of the requirements regarding displays and consequences for removing items from displays. The responsibility to inform will be shared by 4-H staff, county councils, general leaders, etc. Counties are reminded to select two (2) 4-H Members to hold the county flag in the opening parade. Life skills projects will be accepted in the Life Skills Building after 1:00 PM, Friday, September 28 th. All life skills articles selected for exhibit at the 4-H Provincial Show according to the class list must have the 4-H Provincial Show Entry Sticker on the tags and only entries with these tags will be judged. Please be sure the tag also has your name, age (as of January 1 st of the current 4-H year), club and county plainly written/printed. Members are reminded they are expected to exhibit their projects ready for judging. They are responsible to bring their own equipment necessary for their project to be judged, i.e. computer, slide projectors, screens, etc. Counties with members participating in the beef, dairy and goat clipping competitions are reminded that the 4-H member is responsible for bringing an animal for the competition. The animals must be broken suitable for show. Each county is asked to have a contact person who can be called in case of a sick animal, etc. at any time during the show weekend. These contacts should gather a list of where livestock members are staying, in case they need to be located during the weekend. Members are reminded that for Class 19: 4-H Showcase - The class is open to non-recognized 4-H projects (projects that do not currently qualify to go to 4-H Nova Scotia Provincial Show), such as Fine Arts, Environment, Self-Determined, Fisheries, Horse Basics, Oxen, etc. To qualify for Provincial Show, under Class 19, members must exhibit their projects in this class at their county exhibition or show, and be selected for 4-H Provincial Show. The entries for this class must be a tangible item such as a report, a display, etc. Livestock members are encouraged to prepare a written report or poster to depict their livestock project. No live animals are allowed. The judge s decision in all classes and competitions is FINAL. Members are reminded that 4-H is a learn to do by doing experience and their project work is to be their own. Garden and floriculture boxes, garden and floriculture specialty items, woodworking, large welding and small engine projects will be placed in an area where they will remain for the duration of the show, if counties do not have space in their county display. 12

14 Filming of competitions is welcome; however, camera people must stay back far enough so as not to disrupt the competition. Large animals are to be double roped when being handled (Market Animals). Hiring or using professional trainers is strictly forbidden for 4-H projects at the 4-H Provincial Show. Sheep must have a collar for the Grand Champion Showmanship Class. Each county is asked to appoint one person to oversee the clean-up of the area their county is responsible for and county display spaces in all areas at the 4-H Provincial Show to ensure this responsibility is not left with the Hosting Committee. In Light Horse, members will be responsible for their own back number harness. Back numbers will be pre-assigned for all county entries. In Draft Horse and Miniature Horse, back numbers will be supplied to all competitors at the 4-H Provincial Show. Parade of Champions on Sunday: All participating members at 4-H Provincial Show may go in this parade. Members may take their ribbon and/or trophy, but not projects. Throughout the weekend, all livestock should be in their stalls unless being shown or waiting for a class. 4-H members are responsible for telling their Regional Agriculture Leadership Coordinator by September 14, at 12 noon, if they do not want their livestock to be used in a judging class at 4-H Provincial Show. If you have not done so, your animal may be used for judging classes, pending no direct conflicts with your classes. 4-H members are responsible for telling their Regional Agriculture Leadership Coordinator if they want to scratch their 4-H Show entry by September 14, at 12 noon. Substitutions of the next lower entry can be done only until this date. There will be no scratches or substitutions after this date. Judges have the right to relocate entries into the correct class if the article tag is filled out incorrectly. Members must complete their project at Achievement Day to participate at the 4-H Provincial Show. 28 LIVESTOCK CLASSES Members must show their own 4-H animal at Achievement Day to qualify for their county show/exhibition and the 4-H Provincial Show (NS 4-H Council Annual Meeting, November 2003) CONTAGIOUS/INFECTIOUS DISEASE & QUARANTINE: 4-H members, leaders, parents and livestock owners are reminded that 4-H Achievement Days and shows are showcases for the 4-H program, and the agricultural industry in this province. They are reminded that infectious diseases can be transmitted during transport, as well as at the show. As well, livestock exhibitors and owners must understand that in attending 4-H Shows, there is a risk of their animal contracting disease regardless of the best efforts of all involved. If you suspect that your animal has a contagious/infectious disease, please contact your local vet immediately and learn more about the consequences, treatment, and transmission of the disease. A brochure providing additional information on "Infectious and Contagious Diseases Affecting 4-H Livestock" is available. If you wish to receive a copy by mail or , please contact your ALC for this information. It contains important information for all livestock members on this topic and will be critical to review with 4-H Clubs, livestock owners, and your local veterinarian when making decisions about attending 4-H Achievement Days and shows.
