1 Volume XV, Issue 3 4-H Thoughts Hello 4-H Families, Ben Franklin started off every day looking for things he could do to help others. He focused on doing good by asking two questions every day. In the morning: What good can I do today? Before bed: What good did I do today? Wow! So simple yet so powerful. Ben Franklin focused on doing good for others and he may have proved the old adage Give to others and the rewards will come back to you ten fold. He did not do good for personal profit. He did it because that was the way he wanted to live his life. He spent a lifetime learning how to improve the fundamentals of success his personal character traits (e.g. sincerity, moderation, orderliness, helping others, etc.). 2 MISSOURI STATE FAIR UPDATES & CHANGES NEW LIVESTOCK CAMPING RESERVATION PROCEDURE A livestock entry will no longer be required at the time of submission of camping reservation form. Livestock camping forms will be available May 1, 2015, and livestock entry forms will be available May 7, Camping rules have been updated. NEW LIVESTOCK UPDATES 4-H/FFA HORSE SHOW Mules will be allowed to show beginning Mules will show with horses/ ponies in their appropriate classes. Mules and horses/ponies must meet all eligibility requirements for classes entered, as stated in class description. HAMS Ham weights accepted are minimum of 12 pounds with maximum of 30 pound upper limit. STEERS No fresh tattoos at check-in. MARKETANIMALS New rules for 2015 involving participation in animal care practices on the Missouri State Fairgrounds. These rules will be strictly enforced! In an attempt to decrease the amount of outside assistance exhibitors are receiving for care and fitting of their livestock entries, while retaining the educational and fun process of learning to fit show animals, new rules have been put in place. Please keep in mind that the Missouri State Fair expects the exhibitor to be responsible for all care of their entry. (CONTINUED ON LAST PAGE OF NEWSLETTER) -competition-updates INTEREST-FREE FUNDING AVAILABLE FOR 4-H PROJECTS FCS Financial launched an agricultural youth funding program earlier this year to assist Missouri 4-H and FFA members with their agricultural projects. The agreement provides interest-free funding for qualifying projects, is available to all 4-H and FFA members in the association s lending service area and is repayable within one year. FCS Financial requires a detailed projected cash flow as part of the application process. The goal is to emphasize the importance of accurate records, budgeting and honoring obligations to repay in order to provide the future farmer or rancher with the tools, skills and contacts to move forward into a rewarding and successful agricultural career Funds are available for one project per year, per student. For more details or to apply, visit or contact your local FCS Financial office. FCS SCHOLARSHIP Each year, FCS Financial honors the dedicated young men and women continuing their studies. We award up to thirty-five $1,500 scholarships to Missouri high school seniors whose parents or grandparents are current FCS Financial customers. Over the past 10 years, nearly $360,000 has been provided to help our next generation with their education. You can contact your local FCS office. 3 CLOVER KID CORNER Each month we try to provide an activity, information or other materials for leaders to share with Clover Kids. The ABCs of Exercise Clover Kids can create every letter in the alphabet using their bodies. While participants wiggle, squirm and problem solve they are also getting good exercise, enhancing flexibility, agility, strength and awareness of their bodies. Stir the Soup Items for the newsletter are due by noon on the 15th of the month. Little Rascals Meet The Little Rascals met February 3 at the Versailles Farm Bureau meeting room. Annika Baumgartner and Garrett Patton led the opening pledges. Ten members shared ways to make someone feel special for their roll call. Club t-shirts were distributed and theatre date assignments were reviewed. Announcements included: ads for the fair book may be purchased by Feb. 28, for $20 by contacting Bobbie Kroeschen and April 23 will be the Judging and Achievement Day. Demonstrations were given by: Collin Hulse on Building with K nex; Andrew Schad on Making a Bowl of Cereal; Garrett Patton on Tying Your Shoes and Zeke Miller on Making an Origami Valentine Heart. Members practiced giving reasons on a judging class of shovels and made valentine cards from candy canes. The book, Each Kindness, was read, noting how one small kindness can make a difference to others. Each participant finds a partner to do this stretching activity. Both partners sit on the floor, face to face, with their feet touching in a wide straddle. They reach out and grab each other's wrists and move side to side and forward and back. Remind youth to keep their knees straight! Partners can make circles - small ones and then larger ones as muscles loosen. 4 4-H Club Reports By Courtney Matthews Club Reporter The Jamestown Eager Eagles 4-H Club held their monthly club meeting on Monday, February 2nd. President Cara Scheperle called the meeting to order. Pledges were led by Kendall Borts. Flag Bearer was James Scheperle. Roll call was given by Olivia Oerly. The previous meeting minutes were read by Dakota Matthews. The treasurer's report was read by Keegan Borts. Alli Watts circulated the activity list and Alyssa Reynolds led the club's January and February birthday celebration. Life Skills Breakfast plans were finalized. Demonstration Night will be set for sometime in March. Aleah Harris made a motion to host the blood drive on Friday, February 27th and Alli Watts seconded the motion. Members need to ask adults to give blood. Ginna Meisenheimer was told that a couple of people need thank you cards from our club. Door prizes were given out by Ginna Meisenheimer. Dalton Oerly led the club in a game of Super Bowl trivia and the meeting was adjourned. The next 4-H club meeting will be held Monday March 2nd at 7pm. Club Outing Opportunity! Marshall the Miracle Dog is coming to theaters in Gravois Mills and Jefferson City on Saturday, March 7! The Exhibitor and parent or legal guardian of Exhibitor must sign the entry forms certifying that they have read the General Rules and Regulations, 4-H/FFA Livestock Rules and Regulations, Sale of Champions Rules and Regulations, specific and/or special division rules and regulations and that Exhibitor has been advised of these rules and regulations as well as The National Show Ring Code of Ethics; cautioned regarding sabotage, tampering, prohibited substances, unethical fitting and agrees to observe and abide by all rules and regulations. The parent or legal guardian must also sign the Quality Assurance Certificate in accordance with the USDA Wholesome Meat Act. 2. The signature of the 4-H County Extension Agent or FFA Advisor of said Exhibitor on the entry form is required to confirm that: the entry is a bona fide project of their state s 4-H or FFA program; is a member in good standing; that the animal is owned and in the continuous possession of the Exhibitor; 4-H County Extension Agent or FFA Advisor has read the General Rules and Regulations, 4-H/FFA Livestock Rules and Regulations, Sale of Champion Rules and Regulations, specific and/or special division Rules and Regulations, and Exhibitor has been advised of these rules as well as The National Show Ring Code of Ethics; been cautioned regarding sabotage, tampering, prohibited substances, unethical fitting and all rules and regulations have been complied with, to the extent of their participation. Possession, Care and Feeding: 3. Animals entered must be in the name and possession of Exhibitor, no later than corresponding ownership date as established in the Missouri State Fair 4-H & FFA Livestock Rules. Exhibitors are personally responsible for the general custody, care and feeding of their animals. 4. Exhibitor and immediate family only (father, mother, brothers and sisters or legal guardian), in whose name the animal is owned and accepted entry is acknowledged, will be allowed to wash, groom and fit the animal after arriving on Missouri State Fairgrounds. Exhibitor and/or wrist banded family members only, are allowed to participate in any feeding and fitting. Anyone found in violation of this rule may be subject to immediate disqualification without recourse. 5. Any immediate family member not exhibiting who will be assisting a junior market Exhibitor MUST wear a wrist band. Missouri State Fair will provide one (1) wrist band per Junior Exhibitor. Up to three (3) additional wrist bands per family may be purchased at time of entry. No additional wrist bands may be purchased upon arrival. Wristbands will be picked up and verified upon arrival at the corresponding Livestock species office; and will be put on by the Missouri State Fair staff. 6. Special Circumstances: This policy is not intended to prevent any 4-H or FFA member from participating in the Missouri State Fair market shows. In the event a youth exhibitor s circumstances would prevent them from complying with this policy, their FFA instructor or Extension Agent may request a Special Circumstances Exemption by contacting the Missouri State Fair Director s Office. 7. Disclosure Form: For each animal entered in any Junior Livestock competition at the Missouri State Fair, the Exhibitor must prepare and submit at the time of the Show, a Disclosure Form show-ing all illnesses, injuries, medications and injections, including the locations of any injuries and injections, the dates, amounts of medications and injections given the animal and the purpose of each treatment, since exhibitor ownership deadline. If care is given by a licensed veterinarian, you must show the name and address of the veterinarian. 8. ANIMAL WELFARE: There will be no needles allowed in the Missouri State Fair livestock barns or in tie-outs. Any medication needed must be administered by the Missouri State Fair veterinarian or with the approval of the Missouri State Veterinarian. Anyone found in violation will be disqualified. 9. Missouri State Fair reserves the right to make spot checks of animals and Exhibitors at any time to inspect and verify ownership and possession of any livestock entered in the 4-H/FFA Livestock Shows. 10. Showing of Animal: Exhibitor must be present at processing and show and sell their own animal (s) unless excused in writing by Missouri State Fair. Exhibitor may secure some other 4-H/FFA Livestock Exhibitor to show their animal in case of illness or if they are showing more than one entry at the same time. Prior approval from Missouri State Fair is required. No one will be permitted to assist the Exhibitor while showing any animal. 5
