I have noticed over the years that there are always ways to position ourselves no matter what the markets suggest. Of course, we are not selling calves at record prices as we were in However, we also need to keep everything in perspective. Our largest cost in a beef operation is our feed and we are not paying $8 for a bushel of corn and all the rest of our feed is priced according to $8 corn either. The list goes on beyond feed, there is fertilizer, fuel, interest, replacement females, and even bulls that cost less than they have at other times. In 2014 we were turning out $1800 open heifers to breed to $ $8000 bulls hoping to make $3000 bred heifers and regulation were getting more burdensome every day. Guys there is much more opportunity to succeed now! Our business model is working with customers to try and enhance their operations. Some of the customers that have consigned the commercial females are perfect examples of seeing the fruits of their labors come about. I have seen over the years how their females are sought out each year by past buyers because they worked and they were a good value. It encourages our customers to buy bulls that will sire better females than ever before. What is another $1000 to $1500 extra for the right bull if his daughters bring a $250 premium? We purchase calves throughout the year that we feed out at Kinsley Feeders. We try to bid on all the bull customer calves that we can and it feels good to see a producer s calves continue to do better each year. We are also partner with some customers on their calves because they might not be confident or comfortable with the logistics of cattle feeding and the risk management that goes with it. We know there are many places to buy seedstock and we are truly humbled that we are considered among your choices. But we also know that no relationship works for long if it doesn t for both parties. It is our goal to do our part in making your product more valuable. Will we get everyone s calves purchased? Of course, not! Will we make everyone s bred heifers worth more? No way! But that is our goal that we have been working towards for the last years and we are closer now than we started. We have a really strong set of bulls and commercial females this year. All bulls selling are tested negative for BVD-PI, AM/NH/CA free. All 2 yr. old bulls have been Trich tested and the rest of the bulls sell under the Kansas Herd Management Plan. 4 A Word About Genomic Testing Please be sure to familiarize yourself with the Zoetis I50K information in the catalog. The I50K results are already incorporated into the EPD s on the Angus bulls. Put simply, the I50K test makes the EPD s far more accurate. For example, if calving ease direct (CED) is an important criteria in your bull selection, the I50K test is equivalent to having 21 calves on the ground sired by the bull you are considering. What is interesting us is the difference that becomes apparent after test results within a sire group or even in full flush brothers. Full brothers that start out with identical EPD s can start to take very different paths after being I50K tested. The end result is that you can buy with more confidence for what is important in your bull selection. McCabe Genetics etics Breeding Guarantee The bulls that sell are fertile to the best of our knowledge and are backed by a first breeding season guarantee. If, while breeding cows, they sustain injury to their reproductive system, making them unable to service females we will provide you with a satisfactory replacement if available, or issue you credit equal to your purchase minus salvage value that may be used toward the purchase of any animal for sale at McCabe Genetics through our annual sale or private treaty. We request that you notify us before you cull the injured or infertile bull. This is not a life insurance policy against death or disasters and does not cover health problems or injury due to mismanagement, negligence, or risks you choose to take (running bulls together can cause bull fights and injury). All bulls have passed a semen examination performed by the Shnurman Sire Service located at Martensdale, Iowa. Interest t Retained in Bulls We are retaining 1/3 semen revenue e sharing interest in all of the bulls. The buyer will be purchasing two-thirds interest and full possession of the bull. This means we are reserving the right to one-third of the semen sales revenue from the bull if at sometime in the future semen sales become a reality. We also reserve the right to collect semen on the bull for our own inherd use if we choose to at some time in the future. If you sell the bull to some other party we still retain one-third interest. It predicts the average difference in ease with which an sire s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Birth EPD - expressed in pounds, is the difference between average progeny birth weights for sires. Birth weight cannot be used to predict actual birth weights due to maternal differences and differences in environment. Experience has taught us that the use of sires with lower birth weight EPD s can reduce the risk of calving difficulty. Weaning Wt. Direct EPD - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sires ability to transmit weaning growth to his progeny. Milk EPD - is a predictor of a sire s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters. Yearling Wt. EPD - expressed in pounds, is a predictor of a sire s ability to transmit yearling growth to his progeny. Understanding Carcass ass Data Carcass CW Marb RE Fat Carcass Weight EPD (CW), expressed in pounds is a predictor of the differences in hot carcass weight of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Marbling EPD (Marb), expressed as a fraction of the difference in USDA marbling score of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Ribeye Area EPD (RE), expressed in square inches, is a predictor of the difference in ribeye area of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. Fat Thickness EPD (Fat), expressed in inches, is a predictor of the differences in external ernal fat thickness s at the 12th rib (as measured between the 12th and 13th ribs) of a sire s progeny compared to progeny of other sires. $ Value are multi-trait selection indexes expressed in dollars per head, to assist commercial beef producers. Sunflower Supreme/Show-Me-Select Heifer Programs.: rams.: We are very excited to have a large number of bulls that ify for the new Kansas Sunflower Supreme heifer program and also the Missouri Show-Me-Select heifer program. The qual- critiera between the two programs are slightly different with the CED requirements being 10 for the Kansas program and 7 for the Missouri on Angus bulls. Any Angus bull that qualifies for the Sunflower Supreme will also qualify for the Show- Me-Select program. TSince 1967, selling Angus bulls has been McCabe Genetics bread and butter. But in 2008, they added Herefords to their enterprise, and their business has boomed. So right The McCabe family has been farming land in far southeast Kansas, near Elk City, for generations. When they added Angus about 50 years ago, the whole operation was a partnership, Randy McCabe says. Family dynamics changed, especially with the passing of Randy s father in 1990, and in 2005 the family farming partnership was dissolved. After a few transition years, by the fall of 2008, hog barns were emptied and Randy had found the second breed to add to McCabe Genetics, his newly formed seedstock business Hereford. Coincidentally, a neighboring Hereford operation was also facing changes. Bob Faler of Elk Valley Hereford Ranch passed away. Back when Randy was in high school, he helped Bob some, so buying out his widow Sandy seemed like an opportunity for the McCabes. It was unfortunate that he passed away, but Herefords seemed like a good fit for us, Randy says. Sandy was instrumental in making it all come together and my boys (Flinton and Ethan) dealt with all the details. I don t think we would have wanted to compete with Bob, because he had a strong local following, but the Hereford breed just seemed so right. Randy says that the Hereford business has really blossomed in that time period.
