It was a busy summer. The farm picnics were great successes. A big Thank You to Roger and Cindy Weideman for hosting one of the picnics, and to the Gruenerts and Larsons for hosting both the Advanced Cow Training for the Youth and the farm picnic. Thank you also to all of the folks that supported Wisconsin Farm Technology Days and the Wisconsin and Minnesota state fairs. The Highlands are always a big hit with the people who attend these events. World Beef Expo is now behind us, and the NCHCA was well represented at that show. As I write this, we're gearing up for the annual NCHCA show in Austin, MN. As the year winds down, I hope that Fall finds you, your families, and your cattle enjoying this beautiful time. Happy Fall, Ben MISSION STATEMENT: North Central Highland Cattle Association shall protect the integrity and sustainability of the Highland breed by promoting education and social interactions of its members.

3 Member Tip: The Importance of Breeding Season Submitted by: Dan Webster, Lynx River CC Breeding season is a time of year when the size and quality of next year's calf crop is determined. So thoughts of nutrition and body score are important to the herd's reproductive efficiency. There is a lot of talk about grass fed beef. The quality and quantity of grass and hay should be looked at carefully. It should be tested for TDN (total digestive nutrients). Vitamins and minerals are also an essential part of the feeding program. The breeding season is an important time for producers and could impact whether your cattle are making a profit or on the losing end. Whether you want cattle to calve in the spring or fall, thought should be given to the kinds of management that could improve efficiency in beef herds. Herd health and nutrition programs directly influence calving outcomes. Adequate nutrition is vital as cows in poor condition are not likely to conceive. In a 10 cow herd if 2 cows do not put a calf on the ground it could mean the difference between a profit or a loss. So the extra thought to the feeding program could mean a difference between a profit or a loss. Another factor that could have a dramatic effect on calving rates and beef returns is the fertility of the herd bull. A simple breeding soundness evaluation is an inexpensive way to realize a bull's potential. Even a marginal improvement in calving percentage can have an important impact on the bottom line. Another important consideration is bull quality. Buying an inexpensive bull often can be the last way you want to try to save money. Saving money on a questionable bull can easily be the difference between a profit and a loss. Just because it made it around the show ring twice doesn't mean it will produce the best in the field. The University Extension Services have a variety of resources available to help with any aspect of beef herd management. Hi Everyone! Just taking a moment to tell you all to Save the Date. NCHCA Annual Meeting Saturday, February 4th, 2017 Sunday, February 5th, 2017 At the Clarion Hotel Campus Area 2703 Craig Road Eau Claire, WI So put these dates on your calendars and watch for more information on the annual meeting to appear in your box, on the NCHCA website, and in the Hoofbeat. I would LOVE to see ALL of our members there! Thanks! Jan Jan Larson NCHCA Secretary 8968 Fishman Rd. Burlington, WI secretary@nchca.org 3

17 Advanced Cow Training Cow Camp by Paige Proctor The North Central Highland Cattle Association hosted its first annual Advanced Cow Training Cow Camp (or A.C.T. for short) this past August at Four T Acres in Burlington, Wisconsin. We had a total of six juniors from Wisconsin and Michigan attended, and had a great time learning and working with our animals. Calley came over and demonstrated different halter breaking techniques to prepare animals for shows. We discussed ways to work with difficult animals and learned many new techniques. Afterwards, everyone had the opportunity to weigh the animal they were working with, and later had the chance to use weight tapes to estimate weights as well. Dave Larson talked about handling animals, and discussed how he set up his handling facility. We got to take a hay ride farm tour and see the cattle at Four T Acres. On Saturday afternoon, we headed over to Lake Geneva Country Meats to tour their meat processing plant. We got to walk through their facility and learn about how they process livestock after they re butchered. We also learned about how they smoke many of their well-known and award winning products such as brats and sausages. Afterwards, we headed back to the farm to roast hotdogs and marshmallows over the campfire. While we were at cow camp, we also tie dyed pillowcases, learned about fitting and clipping, and had a showmanship clinic. Each junior also led an animal through an obstacle course, which was a great bonding activity for us and our animals. Cow camp ended on Sunday with Four T Acres farm picnic. Thank you to Four T Acres for hosting and everyone who helped make camp possible! The 2017 A.C.T. Cow Camp is in the works and will be held at Windemere Farm, dates to be announced. We hope you can join us! 17

The organization has done this and provides opportunities for youth and families to have fun with their Highland cattle. Our association provides networking and educational opportunities for its members, has an active junior program for youth, and provides a local voice to the national organization, the American Highland Cattle Association th Court NW Ramsey, MN 55303
