2 Women's Outlook The Cowgirl season has been a bit of a bumpy ride thus far but has all the intentions of smoothing out for the back nine of the 2010 season. Fifth year head coach Josey Stender has high expectations heading into the spring portion of their season. To sum up this season, we have had some great individual performances but there were a few events where we weren t as solid from the number one position to the number five, said Stender. I truly feel that this group has really come together during their break and everyone has pulled their efforts in a single direction. We all know that the talent is there we just need to get out of our own way mentally. The fall portion of the 2009 season started off great with junior Molly Black setting two individual Cowgirl records. She opened the season setting the low round 68 (-4) and low tournament score 215 (-1) at the Ptarmigan/Ram Fall Classic in Fort Collins, Colo. Molly took advantage of two things, first this molly past summer she really black practiced the way that was most efficient and effective for her game, said Stender. Second, she has done a very good job of embracing her experience eri e from her first season to her second and finally to her third and learning from all of her ups and downs. Black leads the Cowgirls in stroke average this season and has improved it by seven strokes since her freshman season from to Her leadership ership on the course has everyone looking up to her and it is a role that she has embraced and stepped into very well. The lone senior on the Cowgirl squad returns from one of the most impressive finishes of any Cowgirl. Jonelle Martinez led from start to finish in the 2009 Mountain West Conference Championship and looks to finish her astounding career on a high h note. Jonelle just needs to play, said Stender. I do feel confident that she will put the fall behind her and have the confidence that she has had the last three years. She has been our leader and the recent success that we have had as a team is a direct reflection of who has been leading us. Martinez has stumbled a little bit this year but still has the opportunity to turn her and the Cowgirl season around. I have been very fortunate to have two leaders on this team that gel well with the final three on this team, said Stender. Juanita (Rico), Taylor (Smalley) and Dana (Zamprelli) are very team oriented and fit well with their style of play, work ethic, and personality. Sophomore Juanita Rico has continued to show her consistent play this fall season as she is second on the team in stroke average with strokes per round. Her best finish of this season came at the Oregon State Memorial where she placed second in a very tough field. She had a three day total 223 (+7), out of 50 individuals. We need Molly and Juanita to continue their steady play through the spring and have our freshman support our big three, said Stender. The freshmen on the team are Taylor Smalley and Dana Zamprelli who have stepped into their first collegiate golf season s with excitement and eyes wide open. Both have played in at least half of the fall season tournaments ts and have helped score for the Cowgirls. Both Taylor and Dana a have very good work ethics and really believe in this program, said Stender. It has been a huge advantage to the team that they have had the opportunity portun to play so much during the fall. The final member of the Cowgirl squad, junior Jenna Zamprelli, has decided to redshirt this season so she can have an extra year to get healthy and overcome some of her chronic injuries, as well as benefit from the time she will gain to focus on her game and herself. The spring portion of the season will bring the Cowgirls to six tournaments, from Las Vegas, Nev., to Chandler, Ariz., to host juanita their own Cowgirl Classic. sic. rico The final tournament of the year will be the MWC Championship in Seaside, Calif., on April I have never had a team work so hard and want it so bad, said Stender. It should be an exciting conclusion to the season. jonelle martinez Wyoming Women s golf roster Name Height Class Hometown (Last School) Molly Black 5-5 Jr. Bend, Ore. 3 The maturation process took some time, but the Cowboy golf team has seemed to arrive at a place where they can be very competitive within the ever-tough Mountain West Conference. What started as a group of young players learning the college game has evolved into a quality team led by a group of talented upperclassmen. With a roster that features one senior, six juniors, a redshirt freshman and a true freshman, the Cowboys can now lean on the experience they have gained over the last three seasons. The team is led by a junior class that has grown together over the last three seasons. The Pokes will look to two of those juniors, Gabe Maier and Zach Zaremba, to take the reins and lead the team. The duo has accomplished a great deal over their careers but still have a lot of goals left to achieve. Thus far in their careers, they have combined for 17 top-25 tournament finishes. Our team s success really rides on the play of Gabe and Zach, Cowboy head coach Joe Jensen said. These two guys are our hardest workers and thus our gabe top players. Our team maier really moves with their success. As the Cowboys have grown and matured, their goals have also grown. They spent the fall season ranked between No in the national rankings. With that success, the team enters the 2010 spring with the goal of reaching the NCAA Tournament. With where we are positioned in the national rankings, our goal is to go to nationals, Jensen said. If we have a solid spring, we will have a chance at achieving that goal. We need to be in the top-75 of the country to make the national tournament. With a good spring, we will put ourselves on the consideration list for the tournament. The Cowboys opened the season with mixed results during the 2009 fall. The fall was highlighted by a pair of top-five tournament team finishes a tie for third at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate and a tie for fourth at the Air Force Falcon Invitational. The Cowboys had a great deal of individual success that included 10 top-25 tournament finishes. Of those, Maier turned in the most impressive finish as he won the 92-man Desert Intercollegiate. That tournament win was the first by a Cowboy since During the 2010 spring season the Cowboys will play six tournaments over eight weeks, beginning with the National Invitational Tournament in Tucson, Ariz. from March and culminating with the MWC Championship from May 6-8 back in Tucson. In addition to opening and closing the spring in Tucson, the Cowboys will also play in the Barona Collegiate Cup (San Diego, Calif.), the eighth annual Wyoming Cowboy Classic (Scottsdale, Ariz.), the UMBank Mizzou Tiger Intercollegiate (Columbia, Mo.) and the BYU Cougar Classic (Provo, Utah). Our spring schedule is very similar to last year, which will really benefit us, Jensen added. We especially like playing in the NIT, as it is on the same property as the MWC Championship. Overall, this spring s schedule will be very a challenging one against some tough teams. However, we are excited about the challenge and can t wait to start competing. Men's Outlook Junior Phil Henzlik After breaking on to the Cowboy golf scene as a freshman walk-on, Henzlik has contributed a great deal in becoming an everyday player for the Pokes. After a very strong sophomore campaign that culminated with a tie for seventh place at the 2009 MWC Championship, Henzlik struggled a bit during the fall of his junior year. He will look to rebound from that tough fall in the spring of He is a hard worker and gives everything he can to the game. He is a valuable teammate, as well as a tremendous student. Junior Gabe Maier Maier had a breakout fall to begin his junior season and emerged as the Cowboys top player. Along with fellow junior Zach Zaremba, Maier is a legitimate All-MWC candidate and has put himself in position to make a run at becoming an All-American. During this past fall, Maier became the first Cowboy to win an event since 2004 by earning medalist honors in the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Following that win, he peaked at a No. 46 national ranking in the GolfStat Cup. Maier has the goal of becoming a top national player, and has the work ethic to do exactly that. Junior Michael May May, who had played in all 25 events of his college career entering his junior season, decided to use a redshirt year in to improve his game. He has had a terrific redshirt year thus far, and has vastly matured. Being away from the competitive game has brought a great deal of fire back for May and he is already looking forward to next year. Junior Casey Ruff After missing the past two seasons, one as a redshirt and one due to some health issues, Ruff returned to the Cowboy lineup in the fall of He improved with every round he played during the fall and provided d a great boost to the Cowboys. He has a tremendous attitude and is taking full advantage of being back in the lineup. He has a lot of experience, completing 44 collegiate rounds dating back to his freshman year, and he is looking forward to continuing to improve. Junior Zach Zaremba Zaremba has proven himself as a very talented college golfer and has improved each year of his career. Along with fellow junior Gabe Maier, Zaremba will lead the Cowboys as an All-MWC candidate. He has recorded rded six top-25 finishes in his career and has improved his stroke average each year of his career. Last fall alone, he finished in the top 25 in four of five events. He has the desire to be one of the top golfers in the nation and has the work ethic to get there. zach zaremba Following is a look at the Cowboy golf roster: Senior Jared Butler After joining the Cowboy golf program during the spring of 2009, Butler has shown that he is capable of playing well at the college level. He has been a great boost to the Pokes, has responded well to becoming a college athlete and gels extremely well with the team. He has seen that he can compete at a high level and will look to do exactly that to contribute to the Cowboy lineup as UW s only senior. He has played in nine of 12 tournaments and has completed 27 rounds over the past year. Junior Max Curnow Curnow has been a tremendous leader to the Cowboy golf team, despite not playing in every event. He will add depth to the Cowboy lineup as a junior, while continuing to be a great ambassador to the program. He is a terrific student, has been involved in the Student Athlete Advisory Committee throughout his career and is also involved in many other extracurricular activities at UW. Redshirt Freshman Clinton Boutelle While redshirting last season was tough for Clinton Boutelle at times, looking back it was a huge advantage. He is a very talented young man and proved himself when given the opportunity this past fall. He played in all five tournaments and carried UW s third best stroke average. He was one of the top three freshmen in the MWC and looks to continue to improve with one fall season under his belt. He has a tremendous upside and looks to be an important part of the Cowboy lineup over the next four years. Freshman Eric Parish Parish is a true freshman who earned a spot of the Cowboy golf team this past fall by winning a walk-on qualifier tournament. While he is a new member of the team, he is no stranger to Wyoming golf. He was born and Wyoming men s golf roster Name Height Class Hometown (Last School) Clinton Boutelle 6-2 RFr. Cody, Wyo. 19 Student Athlete Academics The University of Wyoming recognizes the special needs of today s Division I student-athlete and has made the commitment to address those needs with a comprehensive counseling program. In addition to the demands of being a student at the University of Wyoming, our student-athletes must also deal with the extra pressures associated with participating athletically in the most competitive major college division in the country. The Athletic-Academic Counseling Office offers programs designed to assist each student-athlete in achieving their athletic and academic goals. This office is staffed by three full-time counselors, and one full time administrative assistant. The entire staff is dedicated to achieving the program goal of providing comprehensive services to ensure a successful student-athlete experience -- academically, personally, vocationally and athletically. The University of Wyoming s Athletics Counseling Office offers a full range of services in the following four areas: 1. Academic Counseling The core of our academic-support services is the tutorial and mentor program. A qualified staff of tutors and mentors assist students in clarifying their study material and, in the case of travel, help students catch up on what material was missed. In addition to the tutorial program, attention is given to each individual in the development of their class schedule. All UW student-athletes must take a minimum of twelve hours of classes each semester which directly apply to their chosen degree, and appropriate scheduling is a critical priority. Study skills assistance is available for those who need special help in areas including test preparation, note taking and timemanagement techniques. Finally, each student-athlete s academic progress is closely monitored during the semester for such things as attendance, current grade and class participation. Steps are taken to address deficiencies identified by student-athlete progress reports on an individual basis. 2. Personal Counseling College life can be a stressful, as well as, rewarding experience. The additional pressures and stress of being a student-athlete can create problems which may inhibit the effectiveness of the individual in all aspects of life. Issues involving family, friends, school or sport may have a serious impact on the individual and these issues can be addressed with the help of the professional counseling that is available to each student-athlete. 3. Career Counseling The purpose of obtaining a college education is to prepare an individual for meaningful employment following graduation. Needless to say, the act of choosing a useful major is indeed a challenging task considering the multitude of possibilities. Career counseling is available to assist student-athletes in the very important process of selecting a major that will lead to a desired career. 4. Personal Growth and Development This component of the student-athlete counseling program consists of presentations and workshops that address the needs and concerns of today s student-athletes. Presentations feature issues such as Drugs/Alcohol Abuse, Becoming Your Personal Best, Sexual Awareness and Responsibility and Cultural Diversity. Our goal is to provide student-athletes with information that allows them to make informed choices about their personal behavior. 20 Tradition of Success The University of Wyoming men s and women s golf teams have established an outstanding tradition of success, both on the golf course and in the classroom. That tradition continues to grow with the current Cowboy and Cowgirl squads, as both the men s and women s teams have put their names and marks in the record books. Last spring, senior Jonelle Martinez became the second Cowgirl to win an individual Mountain West Conference Championship. She joins Jordan Lintz, who won the MWC s inaugural title in In the first tournament of this past fall, junior Molly Black set the UW record for lowest tournament score and lowest round. At the Ptarmigan Ram Fall Classic, her three-round total of 215 (-1) and second round 68 (-4) were both tops in Cowgirl history. In the fall of 2008, the Cowgirls set the UW record for low team round score and low team event score. Both happened at the CU/Heather Farr Memorial in Broomfield, Colo. In the final round the Cowgirls shot a team 291 (+3), which gave them a tournament 891 (+27). In the past three years the Cowgirls have re-written the low team round record ten different times. As for the Cowboys, junior Gabe Maier won the 92-man UW Desert Intercollegiate during the fall of That marked the first individual tournament win for a Cowboy since His three-round score of 208 (-8) matched the second best event score in Wyoming history. Fellow junior Zach Zaremba wrote his name in the record books for his fifth best individual round and fifth best event score during the season. He finished the final round of the 2008 Air Force Falcon Invitational with his personal best 67 (-5) and finished in fourth-place with a total 210 (-6). The Wyoming men s team has captured seven tournament titles during the past 13 seasons, a team runner-up finish at the 2005 Cowboy Classic and produced an All-American in 1992, Dave McCleave. Nine Academic All-American Scholars have come out of the Cowboy program, most recently Dan Silva in 2005 and The most recent Cowboy to qualify for the NCAA West Regional Tournament was Mike Urbatchka in Urbatchka was also named to the PING All-Southwest Region team -- one of only 15 players selected in the southwest region. In all, the Cowgirls have had 19 student-athletes earn Academic All-American Scholar honors. In 2007 three graduating seniors, Kaelee Aegerter, Lindsey Bauknecht and Laura Mengelkamp, each earned the honor. Former women s team member Jessica Mellinger received one of the most prestigious academic honors a college student can achieve when she was selected as a Rhodes Scholar in December of Out of 930 applicants in the United States that year, Mellinger was one of 32 college students nationally to be selected for a Rhodes Scholarship. She went on to study English at Oxford University in England. Whether it be on the field of competition or in the academic arena, the Wyoming men s and women s golf teams have distinguished themselves as being among the best programs in collegiate golf. 22 Strength & Conditioning/University of Wyoming strength and conditioning Golf is a game where power meets control, and flexibility and balance are the keys to coordinating body movements. The strength and conditioning program for Wyoming's Cowboy and Cowgirl Golf teams addresses these areas while reducing the risk of injury in a highly repetitive sport. Each athlete receives a program that is designed to address the needs of the game. Exercises are chosen based on their ability to improve balance, core strength, power, flexibility, and total body strength. Focus is given to balancing the muscular strength and flexibility in all important areas of the body. Each lifting session is guided by a certified and trained coach to ensure proper execution and intensity. The mission of the University of Wyoming Strength and Conditioning program is to enhance the collegiate experience of each athlete both physically and mentally. This should be accomplished through scientific training methods, as well as through the promotion of a healthy training environment. The Rochelle Athletic Center Weight Room serves as the main training facility for the majority of the Wyoming varsity athletes. The Fieldhouse weight room is also used by UW teams. This facility is used throughout the year depending upon sport schedules. a great place to learn the university of Wyoming Spend some time here and you'll agree that much of UW's character is shaped by this great "home on the range." Laramie, the location of the main campus, is a safe, friendly community of 30,000 people. Nestled between the Laramie and Snowy Range mountains in southeastern Wyoming, it's a beautiful, unspoiled place with a special life-style. The campus extends over 785 tree-shaded acres. There's an attractive mix of modern and traditional structures; many were built with native Wyoming sandstone. It's a place where the sun shines 320 days each year. It's hard to be gloomy here. When you view it from 7,200 feet, you see things more clearly. But it's not just a pretty place; it's also a place that works. Up-to-date facilities support the learning and research mission that makes UW special. There are classrooms with state-of-the art computer technology, laboratories with the latest equipment, excellent libraries, computer systems with universal Internet access, and a long list of premier research facilities both on campus and in the surrounding area. Great people, great surroundings, and a great education...it's all here at the University of Wyoming. Engineering Hall Health Sciences Building Law School American Heritage Center 22 Wyoming golf

23 Laramie, The Gem City of the Plains One of the best things about Laramie is its location between two beautiful mountain ranges. It s a place of blue skies and clean air. Much of the area surrounding Laramie is public National Forest land. That means great access. You can head for the nearby mountains and find yourself on a hiking, biking or skiing trail within 15 minutes. There s also nearby rock climbing at the impressive Vedauwoo formations. You can be downhill skiing in the Snowy Range within 45 minutes. Laramie is convenient to the world-class skiing offered in Steamboat Springs and other Colorado resorts. For a different kind of fun, you can be in Denver within two and a half hours. There is an amazing array of culture throughout the area, plus the tremendous sports heritage of the Rockies, Broncos, Nuggets and Avalanche. With its colorful Western heritage, cosmopolitan atmosphere, and outstanding outdoor recreation, the Laramie area offers a unique flavor that delights visitors from all over the world. 24 Like No Place on Earth They say its beauty is like no other, and you fall in love with its people. Wyoming, it is like no place on earth. Within its boundaries is America s first and largest national park, Yellowstone. The unbounding beauty there includes Old Faithful geyser and Yellowstone Lake, the world s largest high-mountain lake. There is Yellowstone Falls, so awe-inspiring, it ll take your breath away. There are over 260 different species of animals and birds located there. With hundreds of miles of blue-ribbon trout-stream fishing and various wildlife species, Wyoming appeals to sportsmen, as well. Wyoming s wonders seem to be unending. There is Grand Teton National Park, whose centerpiece is the spectacular Teton Mountain Range. There is Devil s Tower, America s first national monument. There is the world s largest mineral hot springs located in Thermopolis. There is the beauty of Ten Sleep Canyon and a hundred other places. For breathtaking beauty, Wyoming is unmatched. It s reputation brings millions of visitors to it s borders each year. Plus, some of the best skiing in America can be found in Wyoming. Tourists and sportsmen can t wait to get here to enjoy the clean mountain air and limitless outdoor attractions. The history of the great American West can be heard whistling through the trees of Wyoming. Wyoming has an historic place in the taming of the West in the late 1800s. Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid were two of Wyoming s most famous citizens during the era of lawlessness. There remain plenty of reminders of an age that will live forever in American lore. People are Wyoming s strongest resource. These folks are down to earth, friendly and helpful. And, oh how proud they are of their Cowboys. Wyoming has some of the best fans in America. As their only four-year university, Wyoming folks are tremendously supportive of their teams. Yet, as down to earth as they are, many Wyomingites are on the cutting edge of politics, entertainment and business. Among some of the most famous are: Former Vice President of the United States Dick Cheney; Dr. Jerry Buss, owner of the Los Angeles Lakers; Dean Conger, former chief photographer of the National Geographic Society; Curt Gowdy, the most decorated national sportscaster in history; Al Simpson, former United States Senator; Gerry Spence, attorney and television personality; and General Pete Schoomaker, U.S. Army Chief of Staff. For great people, great scenery and a great education, there is no place quite like Wyoming. 24 Wyoming golf
