1 Kent Clover March Transportation Circle, Dover, DE Phone: Fax: WELCOME TO KENT COUNTY 4-H Dear 4-H ers, Parents, and Leaders, Winter is ending, spring is finally on its way and we re gearing up for a fast paced array of upcoming 4-H activities. We have all been very active with past 4-H events including the YAP Conference, State Leader Forum, Livestock Overnighter, Woodworking and Photography Judging Contests, and Winter Fun Day that was coordinated and sponsored by the Kent County 4-H Links. We had a great turnout for county training workshops for our Judging Contests in Woodworking, Photography, and Foods. As we look forward to the next couple of months, we see our upcoming Favorite Foods, Foods Judging, State Horse Bowl, Clothing & Textile Showcase, Spring Dairy Show, Younger Member Weekend, Demonstration Contest and Legislative Day. These events are planned for you and we encourage all 4-H members to consider getting involved in one or more of them. Livestock members are beginning to start their 4-H projects in the various livestock species. The Kent County Livestock Advisory Committee has been diligently working on our Jackpot Show and County Livestock Show in May. They are also conducting Livestock Judging training meetings for any 4-H member. The annual Pygmy Goat Show is also planned in May. We hope all of our 4-H livestock members will plan to participate in these upcoming livestock events. The Kent County Horse Show is planned for Sunday, June 22nd. This event serves as the main fundraising event for the Leader s Association to support 4-H programs in Kent County. Please contact your Organizational Leader or the County 4-H Office to see how you can help by selling ads for this show. Everyone s help and support is needed to make this event a success. Finally, we are currently planning the 16th Annual Kent County Basket Auction which will be held on March 28th which will benefit the Delaware 4-H Foundation. Tickets are $30 per person and are available for sale now. Please place your order by March 18th. We are looking forward to a fun and exciting night for Kent County and thank everyone involved in helping to raise dollars of support for the Delaware 4-H Foundation that allows them to continue to provide monetary funding for awards, prizes, and various trips for our 4-H members. 4-H is here for you! This contest can really help with your public speaking skills and learn more about your interests. The next meeting for Peach Blossom is Wednesday March 5th. The theme is yellow night for the Wizard of Oz and the state is Kansas. Good luck to everyone who will be competing in Favorite Foods! Holler-N-Hooves, Maggi Vrem, Club Reporter Holler-N-Hooves 4-H Club members had a blast at the last meeting. We assembled horse first-aid kits as a fundraiser, worked with some members from the Harrington Sunshine 4-H Club, and had a "de-stressing" talk about stress in the show ring. Holler-N-Hooves and Harrington Sunshine members worked together to study for the upcoming Horse Bowl competition. Everyone had fun creating and learning all the key parts of an ideal equine first-aid kit. We aren't just making the kits, we're learning how to use and be safe around all of the equipment inside the kits. This way our horses, kids, and barns can be safer. Members were also able to share what they stress about and ways to handle "horse show stress." Everyone is eager for our upcoming events and cannot wait until the next meeting! The Lord's Clay, Athena Pappas, Club Reporter Our club has been busy! Some members went to Photography and Woodworking Judging along with Public Speaking. We had fun with International Foods, and all our members enjoyed tasting the different foods. The Arts and Crafts group met and made clay ornaments. Because of bad weather, we did our December craft--candy cane ornaments. We also had a make-up Fair Craft, and we made tin punch ornaments for our Christmas trees. Horse group met and learned about the bones of the horse. They played games to learn and everyone enjoyed our own "horse bowl." Leadership and Sewing groups met also. In Leadership, we learned how trust is involved in leading. Also, our Adopt-a- Highway committee met and cleaned up the trash from Abbott's Pond Road. This month, we enjoyed our committee meetings, and participated in the County Photography Contest and Winter Fun Day. For community service, we are having a Bunny Drive and Shoe Drive. If you have any questions, please contact John Tigner at or Tignerfarms@yahoo.com Purchasing Market Hog Projects and PEDv If you have been following U.S. hog industry news over the past 9 months or so, you probably have heard of PEDv or Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus. This virus was first identified in Great Britain in 1971 and was officially confirmed in the United States for the first time in May of 2013 in Ohio. This virus is quite contagious and is transmitted through the fecal-oral route. Pigs infected with the virus shed virus particles abundantly in their manure for 7-20 days following infection. The most common sources of infected feces coming onto a farm are pigs, trucks, boots, clothing, or other things that can physically move it. Pigs show symptoms of virus infection within hours of exposure to the virus with the onset of acute diarrhea. This disease is of most concern to breeders of pigs as the mortality level in young, nursing or recently weaned pigs can be high. Older hogs experience a setback in growth rate of about 3-7 days and generally recover with supportive therapy (clean, dry comfortable, draft free environment, low stress levels, access to plenty of clean fresh water and electrolyte therapy). Because this is a viral disease, there are no antibiotics to treat it. There is no vaccine currently on the market to prevent this disease. The virus does not affect other species of livestock or horses and does not affect humans. In recent months, the number of cases confirmed has increased dramatically and at least 20 states have been affected. Samples from pigs and from the environment have confirmed the presence of the virus in our surrounding states of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Virginia. It was also confirmed in Canada in early February. Continued on next page 18

19 4-H members are reminded to practice good biosecurity protocols when visiting project animal auctions, farms, fellow member s homes and livestock shows. Examples of disinfectants effective against PEDV include Clorox, Virkon S, 1 Stroke Environ, and Tek-Tol PQA training sessions will cover biosecurity principles and PEDv. For more information, please visit the National Pork Board website or the American Association of Swine Veterinarians website PQA Certification There are two options for obtaining PQA certification. The class certification option is open to any age but youth under the age of 8 (computed as of Jan 1 of the current year) must have a parent attend the class with them as national program guidelines do not permit a child under 8 to hold their own certification. Certification received through the classroom option is valid for one year. Youth over the age of 12 (computed as of Jan 1 of the current year) have the additional option of taking a multiple choice test in lieu of attending classroom training. The benefit of the testing option is that certification may last for longer than one year, depending on the age of the youth at test time. Youth must score 70% or better to pass the test and can take versions of the test up to three times in one sitting to pass. Youth only need to complete one of these two options for obtaining certification- not both. The following PQA class training dates have been scheduled for this spring: April 9, Sussex County PQA Classroom Training-Carvel Center 6:30-8:30 pm April 12, Kent County PQA Classroom Training- Kent County Extension Office-9:00-11:00 am April 17, NCC PQA Classroom Training- New Castle Country Extension Office 6:30-8:30 pm June 2, FINAL PQA Classroom Training- Kent County Extension Office- 6:30-8:30 pm The following PQA testing dates have been scheduled for this spring (walk in any time): TBA Sussex PQA Open Testing-Carvel Center- 4:00 pm-6:00 pm May 15, NCC PQA Open Testing- New Castle County Extension office- 4:00 pm-6:00 pm June 11, Kent County PQA Open Testing- Kent County Extension Office- 4:00pm-6:00 pm You may attend class or testing in any of the locations. If you plan on attending any of these sessions, please RSVP to Susan Garey (302) or truehart@udel.edu at least three days prior so that there will be adequate materials. Please contact Susan Garey if you have any questions or concerns in regards to PQA certification needs. Delaware 4-H Equine Art Contest Calling all young artists!
