FAILURE IS NOT FATAL. IT IS THE COURAGE TO CONTINUE THAT COUNTS. By Winston Churchill Artist: Luca Cajeux (Gr 11)

1) FROM THE HEADMASTER S DESK Best wishes to all our pupils at school as they continue with their examinations. They are urged to make every effort with their studies. WINTER ITEMS AVAILABLE AT THE FHS SHOP Scarf... R 80 Secret socks... R 15 Gloves... R 43 Blankets... R 100 Stockings... R 35 Ladderless stocking... R 70 Tracksuit pants (SPECIAL SALE ITEM)... R 100 2) HOCKEY REPORT A Few of our star hockey players received their 50 1 st Team Hockey Caps on the weekend against Fairbairn College. Well done girls, and thank you for your commitment and loyalty to Fairmont Hockey. THE GREEN MACHINE HAS DONE IT AGAIN! During our annual Derby against Fairbairn College, Fairmont had brilliant results. Twelve of our teams won their matches, while one draw 1 : 1. We are very proud of every single player that kept the Fairmont spirit high and played like a champion. Thank you to all the coaches, managers and players for your hard work. Thank you also to our parents who are always cheering us on. Mrs van Zyl

3) RUGBY REPORT U14 vs FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE (WON 26 : 10) The U14 boys had a cracker of a game, with a very convincing win against Fairbairn, despite 2 substitutions for injuries. Fairmont scored first - a try by #9 Liam van den Berg and a conversion by Daemon Sakalis - giving us a 7 : 0 lead early on in the game.

However, Fairbairn immediately fought back and scored soon after, but didn't convert. This was followed almost immediately by a second try to Fairbairn, also not converted. Fairbairn were now in the lead with a score of 7 : 10. Then #12, Jonathan Miller, used his incredible speed to score a great try under the posts and which Daemon Sakalis converted, giving us a narrow lead at half time of 14 : 10. Unfortunately, shortly into the second half, Jonathan Miller sustained a concussion and had to be carried off the field. Ethan Abdo, #4, also sustained an injury and had to be taken off. This resulted in a yellow card for one of the Fairbairn players. Luckily our boys rallied under this pressure and #10 Vuyo Saunders scored the next 2 tries, 1 of which was converted by Daemon Sakalis. Great win! Well done to the U14 players. Final score 26 : 10 to Fairmont. U15 RAMS vs FAIRBAIRN COLLEGE (LOST 12 : 36) Katryn Sakalis An early start meant that the boys had to deal with a slippery ball. Fairmont were guilty of two high tackles in the first few minutes, probably partly because of the slippery conditions, and the resulting penalties set them on the back foot at first. Fairbairn scored first, but the boys kept their structures and put on a show with their pick-and-go skills. If one has to be critical, it has to be that our defense again lacked structure and this will have to be addressed. There was a second half yellow card against us for a high tackle (this also resulted in a penalty try) and the full time score was 12 : 36 to Fairbairn. Philip Conradie

U16 BADGERS (WON 26 : 19) U16 Badgers started extremely well in the first half, putting Fairbairn under pressure, forcing them to make mistakes. The Badgers dominated the scrums and lineouts. They were playing as a team and they were a force to be reckoned with. The spreading of the ball and defense was excellent. In the 2 nd half, a few changes were made. The Badgers again lacked team work, making it difficult for themselves. After a nail-biting finish, the Badgers managed to hold on to the lead to win the game. Final Score: Try scorers: Conversions: Fairmont 26 : 19 Fairbairn Luke Baard, Matthew Cloete, and Lina Mahlati Sean Louw Gavin Louw

1 ST TEAM BEARS vs FAIRBAIRN (WON 40 : 33) After last week s disappointment, this was always going to be a crucial game ahead of the rest of the season. The Bears and Fairbairn teams sparred with each other for the first 12 minutes, with both teams defensive lines holding strong. The first defense to be breached was Fairbairn s, with try scoring machine, Greg Hierse, going over under the poles. Josh Geyser converted. Eight minutes later, Fairbairn scored a converted try from a badly defended lineout to even the scores. Fairmont were looking good on attack, but could not finish off a few promising moves. Fairbairn capitalised on this and scored again. The try was unconverted. The Bears started applying pressure and were rewarded with a great break through converted try by Kerwyn Julies. From the kick-off on the stroke of half time, Fairbairn s nippy scrumhalf chipped over our last defender to gather and score an unconverted try. The half-time score: 14 : 19 to Fairbairn. The Bears knew they had a game on their hands and scored a great second converted try by Kerwyn to regain the lead. With the Bears dominating possession, Lyle Muller dotted down, the conversion was just wide. However, Fairbairn would not lie down and, with renewed energy and a passionate crowd supporting them, scored 2 converted tries in the space of 8 minutes. The ding-dong battle was not over yet, Keegan Smith scored a converted try after a great move from the backline to even the scores. Then, with one minute left on the clock, the ever present Kerwyn ran strongly down the right-hand touchline and broke through numerous tackles to score under the poles and secure victory as well as a superb hat trick. Kerwyn Julies deservedly received the Man of the Match award, with strong performances from Eathan van Rensburg, Greg Hierse, Andrew Reeves and Jarryd Moorhouse. Final score: Scorers: Fairmont Bears 40 : 33 Fairbairn Gregory Hierse (Try), Kerwyn Julius (3 x Tries), Lyle Muller (Try), Keegan Smith (Try) and Joshua Geyser (5 x Conversions) Chris Pollet

4) DRUMMIES The Drummies competed on 19 May. Results: Baton Group 2 nd Place Large Drill 2 nd Place 5) CITY OF CAPE TOWN MEDIA RELEASE CITY OF CAPE TOWN 28 MAY 2018 MEDIA RELEASE Cape Town taking up the winter water-saving challenge Cape Town has again shown why it has become internationally recognised for its watersaving efforts. The average water consumption for the previous week was 505 million litres per day, which is 20 million litres per day down from the preceding week. Dam levels have increased by 2,9% to 24% due to the good rains of the past week. Read more below: While we may be tempted to relax our guard as the weather cools and more rain falls, winter water saving remains vital. The less we use, the longer we can stretch the water supply in our dams in case we again receive below average rainfall. The City is encouraged by the downward trend in water usage and urges Capetonians to continue using as little water as possible. It is important that we carry on saving, irrespective of the weather, and continue to live the 50- litre life until the dams fill up sufficiently. The National Department of Water and Sanitation requires that we reduce our water usage to 450 million litres per day. There is a real threat that if we cannot lower usage further, then even tougher restrictions could be imposed by the national department, said the City s Executive Deputy Mayor, Alderman Ian Neilson. The monthly update of the water map for April shows that households have achieved the dark green water-saving dot for their water saving efforts. This marks a slight decrease but it is heartening to see that a large number of households are still going green.

The dark green dot for water saving is awarded to households who are using litres or less per month. Water map data since December 2017 shows the following trend: Month Number of dark green dots December January February March April Visit to view the latest map. CONSUMPTION IS INDICATED ON THE MAP AS FOLLOWS: Dark green dot: household using less than litres per month Light green dot: household using between and litres per month Grey dot with small dark green centre: estimated water meter reading of less than litres per month Grey dot with small light green centre: estimated water meter reading of less than litres per month Solid grey dot: excluded property (including: sectional title property or group housing / undeveloped property / water use is zero / no available information for the property / estimated water meter reading of more than litres per month) Please note: The map simply indicates water consumption for free-standing houses, not compliance with water restriction limits. Households with higher consumption may have many people living on the property, or may have an undetected water leak. The map shows consumption information from meters read in the previous month, and may include a portion of consumption from the preceding month. This information is updated from the third week of the following month. Households using more than litres per month are not shown on the map. Remember that consumption higher than litres per month (no green dot) does not necessarily indicate water abuse. Issued by: Media Office, City of Cape Town Media enquiries: Alderman Ian Neilson, Executive Deputy Mayor, City of Cape Town, Tel: or Cell: , ian.neilson@capetown.gov.za (please always cc media@capetown.gov.za). 6) MY SCHOOL NEWS vs R9, R8, You have been amazing supporters Thank you so much. 17 11) WELL DONE Willow Rynhoud (Gr 10) Due to Willow s division (Junior Girls) for selection to the Protea Karate team being cancelled at the last minute, she did not compete in this past weekends tournament. She was however there the whole day supporting her team. We would like to retract the information as mentioned above, in last week s Fairmont Focus, and we apologise to Willow for the misunderstanding. Willow s position in the Protea Karate team was never in question or at risk. It was unfortunate, however, that her Division could not compete in the tournament. Willow will be representing Overberg District in Junior Girls at the 42 nd South African Goju-Kai Karate Nationals in September, at the Oliver Tambo Sports Centre in Khayalitsha. This occasion celebrates the 50 th Anniversary of the Hombo Dojo in Cape Town. Congratulations on your selection, and we wish you everything of the very best, Willow!

Daniel van der Walt (Gr 11) Daniel had the honour of representing South Africa at the African Continental Championships in Cairo, Egypt. He was very happy with his third place overall. This has definitely been one of his cycling highlights. Daniel participated in a European Cup event in Monte Tamaro, Switzerland. Here he managed a 5 th Place in his age group, and 15 th overall in the race. He followed this up with 3 rd Place overall in a UCI world Junior Cup event in the Cascades, narrowly losing out to the current world champion. Other results include a win in a UCI Junior World event held in the Western Cape. His current world rankings are as follows: UCI World Ranking (DOB 2001) 1 st UCI World Ranking (Junior) 15 th South African Ranking 1 st Daniel s next events are in Austria and Italy. He rides for Cannondale.

Lauryn Giles (Gr 10) Lauryn and her Unison Kata Team competed on the 25 May in Gaborone, Botswana, at the AUSC Region 5 Karate Competition. This event was attended by Angola, Botswana, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia. The girls were placed 3 rd on the day. They will now travel to Durban to attend the KSA Protea Awards on 22 June, and they compete again at an elite competition for Unison Kata and an Open Competition for individual Kata and Kumite that weekend. Gregory Hierse (Gr 12) Congratulations to Gregory who has been selected for the Western Province U18 Coastal Rugby Team. We wish Gregory everything of the very best with his upcoming matches. Dylan Wright (Gr 10) Dylan has been selected for the World Junior Open Water Championship. TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT FINA WORLD JUNIOR OPEN WATER CHAMPIONSHIPS 7 9 SEPTEMBER 2018, ELITAT, ISRAEL. We would like to congratulate Dylan on this great achievement.

Travis Procter (Gr 9) Well done on Travis excellent performance this past weekend in the U15/U17/U19 Triangular, played at Robertson Golf Club, between Western Province, Boland and the Southern Cape. He won all his games and, although there was no prize for individual play, Travis was however the top scorer for the U 15 WP team. The final team results were as follows: Under15 Western Province 21 Boland 3 Western Province 22 Southern Cape 2 Southern Cape 17 Boland 7 Overall 1. Western Province 112 points 2. Southern Cape 79 points 3. Boland 25 points Travis scored 12 points out of a possible 12. Congratulations, Travis! Travis in action Travis is in the back row, first from the right 12) HEADMASTER The remaining 4 weeks of school is a busy time for our staff as they prepare examination papers and work their way through marking over 10,000 examination scripts. We wish them well during this focused time knowing that the mid-year break is only 14 school days away. Best wishes to our Fairmont families for a great weekend. Yours sincerely Mr L Erasmus HEADMASTER Disclaimer: Fairmont High School does not necessarily endorse the products/services advertised in this circular.
