We appreciate his effort. THEY NEEDS YOUR HELP! Please support this initiative so that they can be taken care of in the only unit of its kind in Africa, at the National Institute for the Deaf in Worcester. Your caring heart and helping hand (your contribution) will directly help and ensure their sustainable care. 4 TIME TRIALS Please runners it is becoming dark very early and because of that we have to consider your safety. We as the club committee, ask that you wear a light or reflecting bands or both. The Time Trials times were given through to ASA as 17:45 for WALKERS and 18:00 for RUNNERS, PLEASE stick to these times. If anything happens to you outside these times you are not covered. Page 4

5 CAPE TOWN MARATHON THE BEGINNING The inaugural Sanlam Cape Town Marathon was run by a small, competitive field in September For the first three years, the race was organized by Western Province Athletics (WPA), under the umbrella of a corporate sponsorship agreement with the national federation, Athletics South Africa (ASA). During this same period of time, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon yielded some of the fastest times in South Africa, including Olympic and World Championship qualifying times. CITY OF CAPE TOWN COMES ON BOARD In the following years, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon steadily attracted a larger and larger field of runners. In 2010, freed of the constraints of the early sponsorship, WPA was able to enter into a sponsorship agreement with the City of Cape Town that set the stage for developing the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon into a high quality, international event showcasing Cape Town as a world class destination for major sporting events. THE VISION EXPANDS In 2014, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is managed by a partnership between WPA, the City of Cape Town and ASEM Running, and it is endorsed by two of South Africa s sporting greats, Elana Meyer and Francois, for its tremendous potential to further develop in the hopes of being included as one of the World Marathon Majors. THE HERITAGE The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon has always been staged on the Sunday nearest to the 24thof September, South Africa s Heritage Day. The route is designed, not only to take in Cape Town spectacular natural beauty, but also to enable runners to traverse the City s rich historical sites, in a running celebration of South Africa s oldest, Mother city. THE SPRING ADVANTAGE Spring dawns in September in Cape Town, bringing relief from the heavy winter rains and frequent strong winds, as well as earlier sunrises and milder temperatures. It is some of the best weather in Cape Town for a long distance running event along a route that offers elite athletes the opportunity to gain fast times, and enabling novice marathon runners to complete their first heroic marathon. HISTORY OF THE MARATHON With its vision of becoming a World Majors Marathon, the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon celebrates the history of the race which takes its noble place as the pinnacle of distance running events Page 5

7 INFO Race results It is NOT Brackenfell Athletics Club s responsibility to check and verify that your race results are correct and recorded. It is YOUR responsibility as runner. We do not know all the races that you enter for and complete, therefore we cannot verify each one. PLEASE RUNNERS - (especially the trail runners) and those running outside WP, BOL and SWD. Make sure that you send your results to Leon within month after the event. Race cards We have noticed an increase where members do not complete their race cards correctly. Remember these cards are used by the hosting clubs to send the results through to use. If the race card is not completed in full, it could be the reason why results are not sent to use correctly. Please complete your full name and surname, club name in full [not just BAC], licence number and age category. Club Clothes You are required to wear royal blue running shorts and club running vests or T-shirts when running any ASA races. NO BLACK RUNNING SHORTS OR BLACK T- SHIRTS OR ANY OTHER COLOUR T-SHIRTS. Members are only allowed to wear a white t-shirt under their running vest. We should be proud wearing the correct club running clothes. All club clothes are available for purchase at the club house. Please contact Carla Botha ( ) for all your clothing requirements. There are various places where your race results can be verified: In our Brackenfell Athletics Newsletter we will try and publish all the previous months results received in the first newsletter of each month. WPA web page for WP races only next to the race itself it will be marked with a R on the right hand side of the race. We prefer members to use option 1. If you do find that your race time are not in the results, please send Leon Visser an [letries@yahoo.com] with the details of the race done, date, distance, finish time and race number so that it can be followed up asap. Do not wait 1 or more months before doing this as it then makes it more difficult to investigate.
