1 October 2014 Newsletter Editorial Finally October is upon us and the local sport calendar shows the start of the track and field season as well as the popular midweek road running events. We appeal to all clubs to embrace the opportunity to promote their events and assist in the continuous growth of our sport in the Western Cape. WPA will be having their Annual General Meeting on Tuesday 7 th October As this is not an election year, only the changes to the WPA Constitution and items on the agenda will be discussed. Now that the cross country season is behind us we are looking forward to the very popular and successful Kids Athletics program which starts on 18 th October Western Province Athletics will once again act as the host province for the SA 50km Race Walking Championships, Saturday 11 th October at the Youngsfield Military Base for the fourth consecutive year. We would like to take this opportunity in wishing the race walking commission and the competitors everything of the best for the up and coming championships. One of our major events on the provincial calendar is the Outsurance 94.5 Gun Run. This event attracts a large contingent of temporary runners as well as corporate companies and is the perfect opportunity for clubs to showcase their camaraderie and spirit from our provincial club structures. We wish Atlantic Athletic Club, the host club, a very successful event. It must be mentioned that after a very successful SANLAM Cape Town Marathon, there are a number of resources one can tap into in order to embrace the wonderful sport of athletics. With a field of more than 4500 entrants in the marathon, this is officially the second biggest marathon in South Africa following Soweto with 6000 entrants. A BIG thank you to the volunteers and corporates for their commitment and services rendered. Due to their involvement it s allowing our club members to participate in this major event. Running Regards Jakes Jacobs
2 Commission News CROSS COUNTRY Cross Country Championships-George-13 September 2014 The ASA National Cross Country Championships were held in Pacaltsdorp on 13 September The WPA cross country team comprised of 55 athletes, and although many improvements in various aspects of the discipline is required a satisfactory performance was delivered at this event. In addition several athletes were entered by the WPA as individual athletes and travelled to the competition at their own expense. The 2014 WPA Cross Country team The first race of the day (Master Men) produced a good showing of WPA athletes with Julian Paul and Goodman Mapukane taking first and second place respectively. The standard was extremely high and it was evident that the competition would test the athletes intensely. There were two other excellent performances by the WPA team. These were by Bulelwa Simae in the (Woman s 35-39) 4km event and Oliver Stewart in the boys under 13 event. Both these athletes lead from start to finish and with Oliver Stewart being particularly impressive as he was the sole entrant in the under 13 event, having to compete against CGA who entered two six man teams into this event. Please see the attached result sheet for WPA at the ASA Championships. Master Men in action The lone figure of Bulelwa Simae on her way to an impressive victory

WPA Development Teen Team Camp (12-14 September) Cape Times Fresh Air Camp, Simonstown Friday afternoon a group of 31 very excited teens met at Vygieskraal Stadium for what was to be a weekend of training, educational presentations and fun at the Cape Times Fresh Air Camp in Simonstown. The objectives of the camp was to start the process of development with our teen athletes, provide training ideas to assist their development as athletes, as well as motivate them to set athletic and life goals and achieve them.
7 The theme of the camp was Teens for Teams Upon arrival and once everyone had settled in, the group went on their first training run. This was enjoyed by all. After supper, everyone met in the hall where the official welcoming and the rules for the weekend were discussed. The group was then divided into smaller teams and a team leader assigned to each group. Then the fun started where teams were given a raw egg to look after for the weekend. They were given time to think of a name for their egg and teams came up with very original names. They were Joy, Spongebob, Smurfy, Eggie Man, Tupac and ABC (Another Big Creation). The one rule with the egg was that it had to accompany the team everywhere for the duration of the weekend except on training runs. We then had a few fun Icebreakers which was thoroughly enjoyed by all and ended off the evening with some hot chocolate, biscuits and cake. Saturday morning saw an early morning run at 06:30, followed by shower time and breakfast with some teams remembering to have their eggs on the table and others needing a reminder. After breakfast a presentation was done by Lovelife. This was very interactive. Areas covered were communication, team work, personal identity issues, as well as HIV/Aids. Ice breakers and games were played to get the various messages across to the teens. They even learnt a dance which had a focus on HIV/Aids. This was followed by an informative session by FNB on money management covering topics like goal setting and saving money, budgeting and the importance of having a bank account. For both presentations Joy, Shaka Zulu, Smurfy, Eggie Man, Tupac and ABC were present. After lunch, a fun training session was had. We then had a free time session where everyone walked across to the beach. Some decided to cool off in the water and others relaxed in the sun. Early evening had everyone lace up their takkies and head out for a short run. Once back at camp, and everyone all freshened up, we had supper. After supper we had a social/free time session till lights out. Sunday morning everyone went on a training run before breakfast. After breakfast, we all gathered in the hall for the start of the treasure hunt. This proved to be lots of fun as questions revolved around things that happened over the duration of the entire weekend. Positions for the treasure hunt were as follows: first place was ABC, Shaka Zulu second, and third place was Tupak. All of us then went down to the beach where we had the next competition. This entailed seeing which team could build the highest castle in 10 minutes. The winning team was ABC. Once back at camp, teams had time to get their creative juices flowing and were given a chance to decorate and dress their eggs. After lunch we had a feedback session where everyone could feel free to express their thoughts on the camp. It was quite interesting to note that the egg actually gave most of the teams the feeling of being responsible for something and working together as a team to look after the egg. Looking back on the weekend and all the training sessions it must be noted that our teens definitely have talent and we have to ensure that this talent is nurtured and not lost. A word of thanks must definitely go to everyone who was involved in the camp and gave of their time ensuring that the weekend was a great success. Thank you again.
8 SANLAM CAPE TOWN MARATHON FUN RUN All the Kids Athletics athletes participated in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon 4.2km Peace Fun Run, which took place around the Green Point Precinct, on Saturday 20 September. It was a fantastic day out and thoroughly enjoyed by all.
