Note from the Presidential Suite Hi All. Only two more sleeps to Club Champs I bet you re all excited!!! NSW Club Championships at Anna Bay next weekend caps off what has been a great season for Hornsby Triathlon Club and a great season for triathlon in Australia generally. The Club has had many successes - whether it has been local events, out of State events and even international. But what has been the most rewarding thing to see, is the level of participation and enthusiasm across all ages, experience and abilities. For some, the Club Champs this weekend will mark the end of the 2008/2009 tri season. For others the tri season this year will just keep going, with Martin, Charles and Neville having made it onto the Australian Team for the ITU Triathlon World Championships in September With over 42 countries represented and our favourite Olympians present, this event alone is expected to attract more than 3,000 athletes from around the world. Congratulations guys for your efforts and all the best in the race. And let s not forget Charles and Brad s efforts in qualifying for Kona yet again! (I m secretly betting that John will join them in 2010 based on his maiden effort). Gotta admire those Ironmen! On a slightly sadder note, I won t be able to make it to Club Champs due to family commitments, but all is not lost! If you can t make it to Club Champs this year - as either a spectator, a volunteer or a competitor (don t forget every point counts), then I hope to see you for our last hurrah at the Hornsby Tri Club s end of year social activity on 27th June. Last year was a very wild night indeed and should I say very cosy in our private party room. The Committee is already hard at work and this year you can expect even bigger things at a new venue large enough to fit our greatly expanded club. There will be lucky door prizes, competitions, give aways simply said just loads of fun and laughter. Oh and don t forget great food and even better company. Hope we see you there. CHEERS! Andrew "Stoney Stone 2

Member Race Results TA Challenge Series at Cronulla State Junior Championships at Mudgee - March 8 Some of the most difficult swim conditions we've seen greeted 5 HTC competitors for the 5th race of the TA Challenge Series at Cronulla. Some were after points to qualify for Worlds on the Gold Coast later this year and some were just after a good hitout. Either way, most were relatively happy with their finish. Josh also ventured to Mudgee for the State Junior Championships. Perth National Olympic Distance Championships - March 15 On the other side of the country Nev and Martin had travelled to the National Olympic Distance Championships looking for those precious double points in their attempts to qualify for the World Championships on the Gold Coast. Friday Night Aquathlon Race 10 - March 20 We had 17 competitors and overcast but very comfortable conditions for the penultimate round of the Friday Night Aquathlon Series. Wally was Mr All- Around taking second in the swim, second in the run and the outright victory with Martin and Andrew J not far back filling the other podium positions. Corporate Games - March 22 Andrew, Michael, Lisa, Neville and Karen all spent the morning competing in the Corporate Games. A great day was had by all representing various business houses - Lisa, Neville and Karen all had a good day taking medals home. They run here (Michael) They run there (Nev) 3

They run everywhere (Karen) And some even cycle (Lisa) King of the Mountain - March 22 A great turn up for the 2008/9 HTC King of the Mountain, especially given the clash with the Corporate Games. We had 12 members and 2 guests do their best up Brooklyn Hill twice. Not surprisingly it was Steve H first up in a blistering time, 10:26, beating second place Martin by almost 1 minute and third placed Andrew J by almost 2 minutes. On the second run off Handicap it was Andrew Good who had the start from scratch and managed to hold on for the handicap win by the barest of margins with Charles just 3 seconds back and Andrew J only 1 second behind him. Steve Hume again had the fastest net time which won him the Overall win. Steve H and Andrew G both rewarded with Coffee and Toast on the club. Well done to all. Tre-X Off-road Triathlon (Long Course) - 29th March 2009 Steve H competed at the first NSW instalment of the popular Tre-X Off-Road Triathlon Series which originated in SE QLD a few years back. It was staged from the grounds of the Del Rio Riverside Resort on the Hawkesbury, near Wiseman's Ferry on the 29th March. Steve H took 1 st in his age category. 4

Friday Night Aquathlon Grand Finale Handicap Challenge - April 3 An exciting format for the final Aquathlon of the summer with everyone leaving individually based on their handicap time. It made for a frantic swim leg with some getting a little carried away and not leaving enough for the run. There was great racing across the whole field with 14 of the 26 competitors setting series PBs. Of the 23 members racing, 11 beat their Handicap Time, 5 by over 1 minute. First home and the winner on Handicap was Thys, beating both his Handicap Time and Series PB by at least 2:30. He was followed home by Sarah C, Emiel, Laurel and Michelle S who all beat their Handicap Time by over a minute. The first of the contenders for the Series victory was Dane who was 7th home. The outright winner with a scorching 14:11 run split was Stewart with Emiel second by 27 seconds. Wally rounded out the podium places, beating Andrew J by just 4 seconds. Laurel was first of the females home, holding onto her strong lead out of the pool with Lisa beating Michelle for second by just 9 seconds. Final Hills Tri Club April 5 A good turn out of HTC members for the final Hills Tri Club race of the summer. Very hot conditions meant times went out the window and it was all about survival. Ironman Australia (Port Macquarie) - April 5 The Ironman Australia Triathlon was held in Port Macquarie on Sunday 5th April at one of the most spectacular Ironman courses involving over 1,500 competitors from all over the world. The competitors fought it out on the gruelling course starting with a 3.8 kilometre swim in the Hastings River, the 180 kilometre cycle winding its way along beside the Pacific Ocean on the beautiful and undulating Pacific Drive and the 42.2 kilometre run taking the athletes through the city centre and waterfront, where thousands of spectators watched the race. All three HTC starters Brad, John B and Charles all had a successful day with Brad placing 8 th in his category and Charles screaming home to place 1 st in his category. Dave & Dean Benefit Triathlon - 13th April Panthers, The Hills & L.A.P.D. Triathlon Clubs hosted a triathlon open to anyone at the Penrith International Regatta Centre on Easter Monday in support of Dave Morris and Dean Henkel who were recently hit by a truck on the M7 Motorway at Eastern Creek. HTC came out in force and as well as supporting fellow athletes and their families we came home with a heap of place getters in each age category. 5

Steve H. 2 nd, Martin 2 nd, Emeil 6 th, Damien 5 th, Neville 3 rd, Jodi 1 st, Steve L. 4 th, Lisa 2 nd, Cath 4 th, Falco 4 th. Manly Dam- 25th April 2009 Ok not strictly a race I know, but if you made it to one of the three Manly Dam training triathlons you would have come away a winner. With opportunities for a range of swim lengths - this format has shown to be very rewarding training and also a load of fun and yummy - thanks to BBQ breakfast and Lisa s and Catherine s baking. Other than feral ducks and killer eels (just joking), Manly Dam offers a safe environment for pushing your swimming envelope what ever that may be. 6

Congratulations to everyone who competed, supported and volunteered this month. 9 Out of Season Training Just because the 2008/2009 Tri Season is nearly over, it doesn t mean the fun has to end as well. If you are training and want some company make sure you place details in the training section of the Hornsby Tri club discussion forum. Bike Training - Bicycle Vic Big Bike Ride (Nov-Dec 2009) Would you like to join a group of Hornsby Tri club members on the Bike Vic Big Bike Ride. 500km from Portland to Geelong along Great Ocean Road - 28 Nov to 6 Dec 09. We have heard that the route is a must do ride and that Bike Vic are the best in organising these rides. If you want to know details and costs the link below will help or communicate via the HTC web forum. Need to be ready to commit by early May to guarantee place. Details at : Member Profile Spend 5 minutes getting up close and personal with Catherine Hume Name: Catherine Hume Nickname: Don t have one Occupation: Corporate Trainer / Learning Design Consultant for AXA Australia What brought you to Triathlon: After sitting on the sideline and watching hubby Steve compete for many years, I had to find the answer to that burning question of could I actually complete a triathlon myself? 9

Favourite tri leg & why: I am most comfortable when I have my feet on the ground so I would say the run leg however I am starting to enjoy the cycle leg more as I get a bit more training under my belt and as I learn to multi-task whilst sitting on the wind trainer. What is the most challenging training run you have been on? A 2 hr 40 min marathon training run with Lisa and Adrian starting at 5am on a very cold winter s morning. What do you like about triathlons: The camaraderie amongst the competitors. Watching competitors of all ages and from all fitness levels having a go and toughing it out is truly inspirational. On a personal note, triathlon has helped me learn a lot about myself in terms of strengths and weaknesses. Just when you think you have nothing left, it s amazing what you can find if you dig just that little bit deeper! What are your goals for this season: Keep working on increasing my fitness level and find the motivation to continue swimming a Hornsby Pool at 5.30am during winter! What do you do for pleasure when you're not training? Reading, watching a DVD/TV, cooking yummy cakes/slices. Favourite flavour of chewy lollies, post tri: The red ones. The introduction of chocolate coated almonds would certainly have me attending every single biathlon! Favourite thing for breakfast: Porridge (hot of course) with a sprinkle of muesli or a banana smoothie (with low fat milk and honey) Best holiday destination: A difficult question so I will have to name three very different but all breathtakingly beautiful destinations the national parks on the USA West Coast (Grand Canyon, Zion National Park and Bryce Canyon); Waikiki Beach (where I completed my first scuba dive) and Thredbo, NSW. Favourite movie: American Beauty starring Kevin Spacey You have just heard that the end of the world is coming - How would you spend your last 24 hours: I wouldn t want to be anywhere else but at home. Tell us something most people don't know about you: I used to work with Anthony Fields (the blue Wiggle) when I was a checkout chick at Woolworths supermarket to pay my way through full-time University. Anthony worked in the fruit and veg section. There were always lot of laughs and giggles when trying to come up with imaginative and creative ways of enticing customers to buy more fruit and vegetables (I can t reveal them here!). Thanks for spending 5 minutes with Spin Effects 10
