1 University of Idaho Vandal Track & Field April 7, 2008 Weekly Notes Contact: Spencer Farrin Office: (208) Cell: (208) Coming Up This Week: Idaho track and field will head up to Cheney, Wash., this weekend to participate in the 37th Annual Pelluer Invitational and Multi-Events on Thursday and Friday on the Eastern Washington University campus. It will be the first chance for Idaho s women s heptathletes and men s decathletes to shoot for their NCAA qualifying marks. With seven athletes already qualified for the NCAA Regional meet, the Vandals are just a few spots away from equaling their 2007 Regional qualifier total of 1 The Vandals have been very comfortable at the Pelluer meet throughout its history. Current or former Idaho athletes hold 10 meet records for the competition. At last year s meet, thrower Jake Boling achieved his NCAA Regional qualifying mark in the hammer throw and both Melinda Owen and K.C. Dahlgren qualified in the women s pole vault. Dahlgren has already qualified this year, but Boling and Owen will look to get on the board. The Vandals will look to build off their strong opening weekend and will look to get a few more athletes out onto the track, as many runners, especially distance runners, trained through last weekend. With Russ Winger and Marcus Mattox already Regionally qualified, fellow throwers Matt Wauters and James Rogan, along with Boling, who all have NCAA Regional meet experience, will look to add their names to the list. Idaho women s pole vault school record holder Melinda Owen, a 2007 NCAA Indoor All-American and outdoor NCAA qualifier, will look to make her season debut at the meet and defend her meet record. Last Week in Vandal Track & Field: Seven Idaho track and field athletes punched their tickets to Northridge last weekend, as four men and three women nailed NCAA Regional qualifying marks at the Stanford Invitational. Russ Winger had the biggest week for Idaho, as he launched the discus a school-record on Saturday. The throw put him at ninth in the NCAA and first in the WAC. Winger has regionally qualified in the discus in all four years of his Vandal career. Other repeat qualifiers included senior Marcus Mattox, who hit in the men s hammer throw, junior David Holmon, who soared 49-5 in the men s triple jump and junior K.C. Dahlgren, who cleared in the women s pole vault. Both Dahlgren and Mattox will be making their third career trips to the Regional meet, while Holmon clinches his second. Three Vandal athletes will be making their first career trips to the NCAA West Regional meet in late May. True freshman Gabby Midles threw in the women s hammer throw, the third-best all-time at Idaho and the best-ever by an Idaho freshman, while sophomore Anne Barnett hit in the women s javelin and junior Kyle Hook threw the javelin A handful of other Idaho athletes put up solid numbers over the weekend, as Paul Dittmer ran a WAC-best time of 136 in the men s 110m hurdles, Elvie Williams leapt a personal-best in the men s triple jump, AshLee Rey ran a personal-best 293 in the women s 200m, Nikita Amy hit a seven-foot personal best in the women s hammer throw of , Darcy Collins hit a personal best of 17-4 in the women s long jump and Jonathan Marler tied his lifetime best when he cleared in the men s high jump. WAC Athlete of the Week: Senior Russ Winger earned his seventh career WAC Athlete of the Week honor for his efforts last weekend in the discus throw at the Stanford Invitational, where he broke the school record and moved into the NCAA top 10 in the event. Winger also broke Olsen s indoor discus school record this season. Idaho track & field athletes won six WAC Athlete of the Week honors this indoor season. Five men and one woman earned the honor. Russ Winger also earned WAC Field Performer of the Year, as voted by the league s coaches. Three Vandal athletes hit their first career NCAA Regional marks last weekend at the Stanford Invite. Kyle Hook, Anne Barnett and Gabby Midles all earned their spots in the NCAA West Regional for the first time in their careers, joining repeat performers Russ Winger, K.C. Dahlgren, David Holmon and Marcus Mattox. True freshman Gabby Midles made her imprint on Idaho history this past weekend as she launched the hammer in her very first competition as a Vandal. The throw is the thirdbest in Idaho track and field history and is by far the best ever by a freshman. Midles also currently sits as the top-ranked freshman hammer thrower in the NCAA after the weekend. One thing is constant about the Idaho track & field record book it changes. At least one indoor school record has been tied or broken every season since Last year s outdoor season, 2007, was the first season since 1994 that an outdoor record had not been tied or broken. One outdoor and three indoor school records have already been re-written this year. Vandal track & field athletes have been very successful beyond the NCAA. Twenty different Vandals have competed in 12 different Olympic Games. Two Vandals, Dan O Brien (gold, decathlon, 1996) and Joachim Olsen (bronze, shot put, 2004) have earned medals at the Games. The University of Idaho has seen some of the best track & field athletes from America and beyond. Thirteen former Vandals currently hold 25 national records in eight different countries. Former Vandal Dan O Brien also holds a world record of 6,476 in the men s indoor heptathlon.
