1 COACHING STAFF Head Women s Coach Marcia Mecklenburg A Pacific Northwest native, Marcia Mecklenburg is now in her 13th season as head coach of Eastern s women s track and field and cross country programs. She coaches Eastern s throwers and multi-event athletes. During her tenure at EWU, Mecklenburg has coached the throwers and multi-event competitors to 54 Big Sky All-Conference team honors, including 15 conference titles. She has coached two NCAA All-Americans in the javelin Carolee Gutierrez in 2007 and Ryan Cole in Mecklenburg took over at EWU in fall 1995 after nine seasons as an assistant at Washing ton State University. At WSU, she coached All-America athletes in the shot put, discus and javelin events, including the 1987 and 1988 NCAA discus champion. Before joining the Cougar coaching staff in 1986, Mecklenburg was an assistant coach for five seasons at Montana State and also coached at Seattle Pacific. At MSU, she coached 11 all-conference athletes and a pair of national qualifiers. Mecklenburg has extensive strength and conditioning coaching experience. She was an assistant coach for the United States at the 1997 Indoor World Championships. Mecklenburg received her bachelor s degree from Seattle Pacific in 1979 and her master s degree from Montana State in She is a former state champion at Edmonds, Wash., High School, and competed four times in the AIAW National Champi onships in the shot put and discus while at SPU. During the course of her competitive career, Mecklenburg also competed in three Olympic trials and made three U.S. teams. As a competitor in masters competitions in the hammer throw, she set an American record for her age group at the Nike World Masters Championship in summer Mecklenburg has a daughter, Echo (5). Assistant Coach Renee Scott-Caine This is Renee Scott s 11th season as a full-time assistant. She coaches Eastern s sprinters, hurdlers and multi-event athletes. Scott is Level I and Level II certified in the USATF Coaches Education Program. She has coached several all-conference athletes, including a conference championship record-holder in the men s 60-meter dash. Since she began coaching, her athletes have won 18 conference championship titles. A jumper and hurdler for the s from , Scott s career-best outdoor long jump of /2 and her best indoor jump of /4 both ranked in the top 10 in school history. Her best finish at the Big Sky Conference Championships was an eighth-place finish indoors in the long jump in Formerly from Lakewood, Wash., she attended Clover Park High School, where she placed second in the state in the 300 low hurdles. Scott received her bachelor s degree in liberal arts from Eastern in She received her master s degree at EWU in 1998 in physical education with an emphasis in sports administration. Renee recently married Warren Caine. Head Men s Coach Stan Kerr Stan Kerr is in his 13th season as head men s track and field/cross country coach. While a member of the Spokane Community College and University of Montana track squads, Kerr ran on mile relay teams that still hold school records of 3:10.50 and 3:12.70, respectively. Kerr came to EWU in fall 1977 to finish school. He ran legs of relay teams for EWU in 1979 that set school records, including the 800-meter-sprint-medley relay (1:31.38). Kerr received his master s degree from Eastern in 1993 and bachelor s degree in After he left Eastern in 1993, Kerr became the head men s coach at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire. While at Eau Claire, he coached the NCAA Division III women s high jump champion. He and his wife, Saralynn, have two sons, Tully (16) and Carson (11). Assistant Coach Chris Zeller Chris Zeller enters his third year as an EWU cross country coach. Before coming to Eastern, Zeller served as head boys cross country coach for Port Angeles High School. In his three years there, his teams finished 13th, sixth and seventh at state, and he was voted the Narrows League Coach of the Year in both 2003 and Prior to coaching at Port Angeles, Zeller assisted at Ferndale High for one year in During this season, the FHS boys team captured the league and district titles. Zeller earned his bachelor s degree in history-secondary education from Western Washington University in winter 2002 and is currently working on his master s in sports administration through EWU. 2 SEASON OUTLOOK With 30 returning letter winners, depth and experience in the throws should translate to improved point totals in the outdoor season Despite the loss of the top men s point producer in school history and an All-America thrower on the women s side, the Eastern Washington University track and field teams hope depth and experience will help the programs have continued production in the indoor and outdoor seasons. The s return 30 letter winners, including 15 for the men and 15 for the women. Eastern is particularly strong in the throwing events and Eastern s coaches expect the s to improve their position and point totals during the outdoor season when a full complement of throws events take place. Looking historically where we have been selected, a lot of our points have come in the throws, said head men s coach Stan Kerr r of the preseason prediction. Take out our javelin crew and our discus crew who have scored very solid points for us over the years outdoors, and you can quickly erase that difference between seventh and fourth or seventh and second. We are not as strong indoors because we don t have the javelin and the discus, said head women s track coach Marcia Mecklenburg. Those are two very strong events for us. So we need some of our athletes to really step it up for us in the weight throw and shot put indoors. Both the men s and women s teams are hoping to improve upon last year s finishes after recently recording best-ever performances at Big Sky Conference championships. In 2007, Eastern closed the year in Pocatello, Idaho, at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships with a sixth-place finish for the men and a placing of seventh for the women. In the indoor season, the men finished a best-ever fourth and the women placed eighth. In 2006, the men were a best-ever third outdoors. The women have also had their best-ever finishes of fourth indoors and sixth outdoors in the last five seasons. The men s team lost nine letter winners from last year, but the 15 returning include Big Sky outdoor 400-meter champion Chad Butorac. He finished seventh in the 400 at the NCAA West Regional Championships. The junior will redshirt the indoor season before continuing his pursuit of the school records in the 400 of (outdoors) and (indoors). Butorac s career bests thus far are (outdoors) and (indoors). Chad is one of the pillars of the sprint program, said Kerr. Chad is a great student, a great team leader and has a great work ethic, Page 2 and that is the type of pillar you want in your sprint program. He has two great years ahead of him to shoot for our school record, which I think he will break. It is just the matter of when. Also returning is senior Curtis Suver, who finished fifth last year outdoors in the 5,000 meters and third in the same event indoors. Joining him will be Paul Limpf, who finished fifth at last fall s BSC Cross Country Championships. Limpf finished fourth in the 5,000 at last year s indoor championships. Paul and Curtis are the pillars in our group of returning distance athletes, said Kerr. They are starting to build some momentum in the Big Sky in an area where we have not had a lot of all-conference performers. Both have been all conference both on the track and cross country. So again, we are looking to establish pillars in all of the event areas. Besides Butorac, Suver and Limpf, other individual scorers (top eight finish) at the Big Sky Championships returning from 2007 include Nick Mundell, Steve Keith, Joshua Jones, Jason Kirk, Erik Walter, Cameron Moore and Armand Hopkins. The women return 15 letter winners after losing 10. Athletes returning include Big Sky placers Kiri Garruto, Jessica Duran, Erica Chaney, Bonnie Millard, Krystal Deyo, Mattie Bridgmon, Lindsey Buttrey, Sarah Frey, Erika Kirley-Price, Kristen Felderman and Camille Moseley. Throws should be impressive again despite having to replace Paul and Gutierrez... After winning the Big Sky outdoor title in the discus, Millard advancedd to the NCAA West Regionals where she placed 15th overall in her first appearance. Chaney was fourth in the discus and fifth in the shot put outdoors in the Big Sky before competing in the shot put and javelin at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships. It is going to be an interesting year in the throwing events because I believe Erica is going to give Bonnie a run for her money, said Mecklenburg. Erica could also get the school record and she has that ability. Bonnie concentrates on the shot and discus and Erica does four throwing events. The plus for Bonnie is she only has to focus on two events. The plus for Erica is that she can spread her focus out. Regardless, those two will have a good chance to go for the school record. Replacing the production of throwers David Paul and All-American Carolee Gutierrez will also be important, as both capped stellar EWU careers in However, the way the s look at it, those are points now there for the taking by other s. Paul scored a school-record 54 points outdoors at Big Sky events and had 32 more points indoors to rank third in EWU history. Included was the championship in the hammer throw as a senior with a new school and Big Sky record of Obviously, you don t replace a competitor of David s caliber, commented Kerr. We do have a young throws group, so hopefully we will have a little more depth even without David. That will offset some of the points lost because David isn t there to get the points. So we will have more throwers in more events that I am hoping will produce both indoors and outdoors. Gutierrez scored 34 Big Sky points in her career, including a runner-up Big Sky finish in the javelin. She went on to place second at the NCAA West Regional Championships with a throw of that was a school and Big Sky record. She then finished eighth at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors before placing fourth at the USA Track and Field Championships. At the national level Carolee is going to be a hard one to replace, added Mecklenburg. I never really felt she did what she could have at the Big Sky level. I don t know if she was two weeks tooo early or what. Gutierrez also owns the school record in the discus of that Millar and Chaney will be chasing. On the conference level I think we are going to be stronger even though we did lose Carolee, Mecklenburg added. But on a national level it s going to be hard to accomplish the things that Carolee did. The Eastern men were picked to finish seventh indoors by Big Sky coaches in the league s preseason poll, while Sacramento State, Weber State and Northern Arizona were in a three-way tie for the top spot. The women are picked to finish eighth while the Weber State Senior Curtis Suver

3 women are picked first followed by NAU. Squads have strengths in different areas, added Kerr. Sac State is going to score heavily in the sprints and jumps, NAU in the distances and Weber State is pretty balanced and is going to be looking at other scorers to help them out. It depends who is healthy at the end of the year. I think we might be a litwhere tle stronger than we are ranked, but again, we are a better outdoor team, added Kerr. We are missing some indoor events that make us a better outdoor team. Hopefully we can finish in the middle. I believe that NAU is going to be No. 1 just becausee of what they did in cross country, said Mecklenburg of the women s title chase. She gives the edge to the Lumberjacks, a distance-running powerhouse that finished seventh at the NCAA Cross Country Championships (the NAU men were fourth). Indoors has a little more emphasis on the distance events. Because of that, schools that are strong in the distance events are going to do well. So I would say NAU will finish first. Despite NAU s superiority overall, the s also feature one of the top female distance runners in the league. Bridgmon was 64th in the NCAA Cross Country Championships last fall after placing fifth in the Big Sky meet. At the league s outdoor track and field championships last year, she was seventh in the 5,000 meters and fourth in the 10,000. Mattie is coming off a great cross country season, said Mecklenburg. Having the experience of competing at the NCAA Cross Country Championships should be a great boost for her confidence going into the indoor season. It will be great to see her score some big points against the Big Sky distance powerhouses. Junior Chad Butorac Men s Season Outlook Throws Andre Lester and Cody Irby will lead the men s throwers in the 2007 season. Lester finished 11th at the BSC outdoor championships with a hammer throw of Irby placed 14th in the hammer at the outdoor championships with a throw of He also finished 11th in the javelin with a throw of Brody Faire (hammer, shot put, discus), Bob Wilske (shot put, discus, hammer) and John Clevenger (javelin) will also bring some depth. Faire made his second Big Sky appearance last year in Pocatello, Idaho, where he fouled in both the shot put and the discus. That experience is not too unusual, I know Brody is looking forward to his next Big Sky Championships, said Kerr. Wilske finished seventh in the shot put with a throw of /4 and ninth in the weight throw with a toss of /4 at the 2007 Big Sky Conference Indoor Championships. Bob doesn t have a lot of Big Sky experience, said Kerr. Our task with him is get him into as many high quality meets as soon as we can. Junior Paul Limpf Cameron Moore will look to place in the jumps again this year as he placed eighth last year in the triple jump with a mark of 46-8 at the outdoor championships. He is looking to be an all-conference performer this year and next year, added Kerr. Armand Hopkins finished seventh at the 2007 BSC championships with a triple jump of /4. He is a great triple threat in the long, high and triple jump, said Kerr. I think he can be the surprise of the Big Sky Conference. He has had a terrific fall season and particularly in the weight room. Armand is very strong and he has done different things in jump training. You will probably see him score in all three of those events in Pocatello. Other athletes bringing depth to the jumps are: Stephen Praast (high jump), Levi Knudson (long and triple jump) and Aaron Edwards (long jump, triple jump and high jump). Edwards set a school record at St. Martin s University with a long jump of He also is high jumping but I think his breakthrough events are in the long and triple jump in this conference, said Kerr. Jumps Mike Uhlenkott will look to continue his success this season. Uhlenkott placed fourth at the outdoor championships in the pole vault (15-1) at the 2006 outdoor championships and tenth (15-1) in the 2007 BSC championships. Gabe Chavez (pole vault) placed 14th with a jump of /4 at the BSC champi- was onships. His best vault Mike and Gabe both are back, said Kerr. They are leading a great one-two punch. The men s pole vault in the Big Sky is not as deep as it was maybe a year or two ago. So, I think those two guys can do very well both indoors and outdoors for our program. Geoff Penrod (long jump, triple jump) is the strongest returning long jumper. In 2007 at the BSC indoor championships Penrod finished 10th in the long jump with a jump of /4 and red shirted the outdoor season. Penrod s goal is to win the outdoor title, said Kerr. So his mentality is there. He knows he is up to the task. He had a really good fall season. He represents one of the lars of the jumps crew in terms of pil- work ethic, taking on responsibility, taking on some leadership and letting guys know what to do if they want to be competitive in this conference. Sprints and Hurdles Top hurdler Nick Mundell will look to add some depth this year. Mundell finished seventh place in the 400-meter hurdles at the BSC championships. His best hurdle time is Mundell is very fired up and is ready to go this year, said Kerr. He was a young hurdler and again had that great experience of being in the championships atmoresponded really well to sphere. He it and now he knows the 400 hurdlers and who is ahead of him in conference. So when he shows up in Pocatello for the indoor meet and Sacramento for the outdoor meet it won t be a surprise to see the different Big Sky schools there and he will move up. In sprints, Chad Butorac is the top returnee. Butorac placed second in the 400 indoors and was champion outdoors at the BSC championships. Chad has a goal to be a three-peat when he is a sophomore, junior and senior, said Kerr. Josh Jones (sprints), Jason Kirk (sprints), Steve Keith (sprints), Kyle Urley (sprints), Kersee Lind (sprints and hurdles) and Derek Clemmons (hurdles) will look to add more depth to the Page 3

4 sprints and hurdles team. Lind is a freshman from Hermiston, Ore., who had a high school best performance in the 400 of and a 110-meter hurdles time of Kersee has a great work ethic and that will serve him well, said Kerr. Jones has a best out- door 400-meter run time of Josh had a good fall season, added Kerr. He is a little fragile right now but he has been able to train and push with Chad. And between Josh, Chad, Kyle Urley and Jason Kirk, our men s 4x4 is going to be very competitive. Urley comes in as a junior from Clark Community Col- fifth in lege. He is ranked their top 10 school rankings in the 400 with a time of Kyle has the talent to run Junior Bonnie Millard with Chad and is going from a community college to a Division I conference and Division I training program, added Kerr. I have watched him train and you don t want to grin too early, but our men s 4x4 is going to be good this year. Keith has a best outdoor 100 time of and a 200 best of Steve comes back as a great sprinter indoors and outdoors, said Kerr. He is very experienced and ready to go. Distance Paul Limpf finished fifth on the 8,000-meter course (24:34.1) at the 2007 BSC cross country championships. Limpf finished fourth in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:07.19 at the BSC indoor championships. Limpf is an all-conference athlete in both cross country and on the track, said Kerr. He is extremely motivated and works extremely hard. He will be extremely successful because of all of those personality traits. Curtis Suver finished third in the 5,000 meters with a time of 14:56.70 in the indoor championships and placed fifth with a time of 15:28.06 at the outdoor championships. Tyler Justice (middle distance), Andrew Marks (middle distance) and Eric Walter (800) will look to bring depth to the distance team. That group collectively works hard, gets along well and pushes each other, said Kerr. Page 4 Women s Season Outlook Throws Bonnie Millard will look to lead the Eastern women s throwing team after an impressive finish at the BSC championships in Pocatello, Idaho. Millard was champion in the discus with her throw of which ranks fourth on Eastern s all-time best list. She made her first appearance in the NCAA West Regional outdoor championships in the discus and finished 15th overall with a throw of Millard is a junior from Priest River, Idaho, and is looking to make it back to the podium this season. I am looking for Bonnie to break the school record in the discus, said head women s track coach Marcia Mecklenburg. Senior Jordan Baughan, sophomore Erica Chaney and senior Erika Kirley-Price will look to add some depth to the throwers both indoors and outdoors. Baughan, from Klickitat, Wash., placed third in the Big Sky at the 2006 outdoor championshipss in the javelin (154-7) and seventh at the NCAA West Regionals (152-11). As a freshman, Baughan capped off her season with a trip to the NCAA Regionals, where she finished 25th in the javelin with a throw of Baughan, as a sophomore, peted at the NCAA West Regionals with a com- throw of to advance to the NCAA Championships with a throw of Jordan is coming off a shoul- der surgery, added Mecklenburg. So it will be interesting to see how she comes back from that. She has been throwing with us since last spring when she struggled, but she kept throwing and this fall things look like they are starting to click for her. If we can get her back enough to score in the top four or five and get her to nationals again, that would be great for her. Chaney, from Spokane, Wash., placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of /4 and fourth in the discus of at the BSC outdoor championships. She went on to compete at the USA Junior Track and Field Championships where she finished 17th out of 27 with a throw of /2. Her best shot put in 2007 was /2. I am looking forward to what Erica is going to do in the next several years, said Mecklenburg. She is just a sophomore and does all four throwing events. She has improved tremendously in all of her events from her freshman year. She looks really good right now in practice, so she could end up being our best overall thrower ever that has came out of Eastern when she is done. Kirley-Price will once again look to place at the Big Sky Championships as she finished seventh in the hammer in the 2007 outdoor season. In 2005 she placed eighth in the discus. She is from Kennewick, Wash. This is Erica s final year, said Mecklenburg. She could have stepped out last year after completing her degree, but thankfully she came back for a fifth year. She is going to do some incredible stuff for us this year. She already has a four-foot personal best in the weight throw just from the intrasquad meet. So if we can keep her healthy she is really going to help us out. Aimee Carroll, Mallory LaPlante, Jessica Thomas (formally McFarland) and Nicole Luckenbach all look to make it to the BSC championships this year. Carroll is from Silverdale, Wash., and had her best hammer throw of I am looking for Aimee to help us out both indoors and outdoors, said Mecklenburg. That is the one area we are not as strong indoors because we don t have the javelin and the discus. And those are two very strong events for us. So we need some of our athletes to really step it up for us in the weight throw and shot put indoors. And I am looking for Aimee and Nicole to move in and help Erika Kirley-Price get us some points. Senior LaPlante placed 14th in the discus at the outdoor championships. Mallory had a great finish last year, said Mecklenburg. This is her last year with us and I know ideally it would be great to seee her score in the javelin and the discus. Her best shot I think is going to be the discus, and if we can keep her healthy and keep her going, I believe she can do that. Thomas, from Auburn, Wash., placed 11th last year at the BSC championships with a javelin throw of Jessica has a tendency to get hurt, added Mecklenburg. So if we can keep her healthy and going she could score for us. Newcomers include Amanda Peterson and Mari Bingham. Peterson is a javelin thrower out of Gig Sophomore Erica Chaney

5 Harbor, Wash., who graduated from Peninsula High School. Peterson s best throw in high school was a in the javelin. I see Amanda helping to cover for the loss of Carolee in the spring, added Mecklenburg. I think that she will step in right away and be a contender for the conference title. Bingham is a graduate of Mt. Tahoma H.S. in Tacoma, Wash. Her best throw in high school was a /4 in the shot put and a discus throw of Mari is young, so we will eventually see her develop. She needs ring time right now. Senior Camille Moseley Jumps Krystal Deyo is looking to lead the women in the jumps. Deyo is a sophomore from Castle Rock, Wash., who placed 14th last year in the BSC championships with a long jump of I am looking at Krystal to really step it up, said Mecklenburg. Our freshmen last year came in and were able to get experience at the conference championships and I am expecting that to help them this year. I think both Krystal Deyo and Jessica Duran needed that year of college to see what it is like and needed the experience. I think this year is going to be a turning point for those two as they help the team and score in the jumps for us. Among the newcomers are pole vaulter Chelsi Friese, from Lebam, Wash., and a graduate of Willapa Valley H.S. Friese s best pole vault of 11-9 came at EWU at the WIAA State 2B Championships. Chelsi is going to be great, added Mecklenburg. We had an opportunity to see her compete at our intrasquad meet and she is a fighter -- that is going to be fun to watch. I don t want to say we haven t had fighters in the past but we haven t had a fighter that looks like they are fighting for everything that they can get. Chelsi looks like that and not only is that going to help her, but when her teammates see that, it is going to help and motivate them. So she is going to help us out this year and is going to be a team leader for us. Adding depth are newcomers Irene Lowe from Yelm, Wash., Kaelin Price from Parker, Colo., and Shene Davis from Yakima, Wash. Lowe and Price both have a career best in the high jump of 5-2 and Davis won the triple jump at the WIAA State 2A Championships with a jump of /4. Sprints and Hurdles Deyo is also looking to lead the sprinters. She placed sixth at the 2007 BSC Outdoor Champi- in Pocatello, Idaho, with a 100 meters onshipss time of Sarah Frey will lead the hurdlers as Frey placed 12th at the championships with a time of 1:06.25 in the 400-meter hurdles. Frey is a junior out of Olympia High School in Olympia, Wash. Sarah is a leader in that group and is one of our older athletes, said Mecklenburg. She really could score for us indoors and outdoors. Kristen Felderman finished 10th with a time of in the 400 meters at the outdoor championships. Kristen is coming back with a year of experience, added Mecklenburg. I think she just needed to see what it is about last year and hopefully she will produce as well as we know she can produce. Also adding some depth this year are Friese, freshman Shene Davis, freshman Lauren Matthews, junior Shannon Long, junior Alex McNairy and senior Crystal Williams. It would have been nice if Shannon could have been eligible last year, added Mecklenburg. But having her for a year is going to make a difference as she adds some depth to that sprint crew. Crystal is someone who has been injury prone for us but we are crossing our fingers we can keep her healthy. Hopefully she can go out her senior year scoring at the conference championships. Friese had her best 100 high hurdles at the 2B Championships of Davis is out of Selah High School near Yakima, Wash. She has a best 100 time of and 200 mark of Davis main event is in the triple jump but she is coming in with some excellent sprints in both the 100 and 200. I am crossing my fingers that we can have her in all three events. Distance Mattie Bridgmon and Camille Moseley (formerly Gibb) will lead the women s distance team this season. Bridgmon and Moseley are two powerhouses for us, said Mecklenburg. They help each other in training and when they race together. It has been great for both of them and I am expecting that this will be one of the best showings at the conference championships for us. Moseley, a senior from Kittitas High School, placed fifth outdoors in the 1,500 last season (4:38.30) and finished 15th in the 5,000 meters (19:27.07). Bridgmon, a junior from Laramie, Wyo., also competed in the BSC Championships outdoors last season where she placed seventh in the 5,000 meters (18:08.21) and ran the 10,000 meters for the first time at the championships and finished fourth with a time of 37: In cross country in fall 2007, she finished fifth at the 2007 BSC Championships and finished 64th at the NCAA Championships. Adding depth to the distance crew are seniors Kiri Garruto, Nikki Buchholtz, junior Tracy Kuhn, and newcomers Whitney Johnson, Amanda Weaver and Brittany Williams. Garruto had a time of 19:27.21 in the 5,000 meters to finish 16th at the 2007 BSC outdoor championships. She also finished sixth in the 5,000 at the 2007 BSC indoor championships with a time of 18: Kiri Garruto is coming back as our only scorer indoors, said Mecklenburg. It would be great if she could finish her indoor season this year scoring more points than she did last year. It would be great for her and for us. 20 BIG SKY/NCAA Conference Now in its 45th Year of Athletic Competition The Big Sky Conference enters its 45th year of athletic competition in after welcoming a ninth member in The University of Northern Colorado officially became a member of the Big Sky Conference on July 1, 2006, after the league consisted of eight members for the previous five years. The Big Sky is an NCAA Division I member in all sports, with member institutions playing as part of the NCAA Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). The current lineup includes Eastern Washington, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado, Portland State, Sacramento State and Weber State. The league has become one of the strongest Division I conferences in the West and is a national leader in FCS football. The Big Sky Conference was established in 1963 by six charter members Idaho, Idaho State, Gonzaga, Montana, Montana State and Weber State. Those six schools formed the foundation of the Big Sky before the league expanded in 1970 by adding Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga left the Sky in 1979 and was replaced by Nevada, which gave the league eight members. The conference grew to nine schools in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington. The 1990s saw change in the makeup of the league, beginning in 1992 when Nevada departed and put the Big Sky back at eight teams. In 1996 Boise State and Idaho left and at the same time the conference added Portland State, Sacramento State and Cal State Northridge. The Big Sky maintained nine teams for five years before Cal State Northridge departed in the spring of 2001, giving the Big Sky eight schools. With the addition of Northern Colorado, the Big Sky spreads across eight states spanning from the Pacific Ocean to the Rocky Mountains. The Big Sky is represented along the entire west coast with schools in Washington, Oregon and California. League schools also range up and down the Rocky Mountains with institutions in Montana, Idaho, Utah, Arizona and now Colorado. Of the eight western-most states in the contiguous United States, only one, Nevada, is not represented in the Big Sky. On Feb 25, 1963, the name Big Sky was adopted by the six presidents of the charter members as the name of the new conference. The name Big Sky originated in a novel written by the late A.B. (Bud) Guthrie of Great Falls, Mont., in 1947 entitled The Big Sky. Jack Hollowell, a former Montana advertising director, promoted the Big Sky theme for the Treasure State, and Harry Missildine of the Spokane Spokesman-Review called for the newly formed league to be named the Big Sky Conference in his column dated Feb. 20, The Big Sky sponsors championships in 14 sports, including men s and women s cross country, indoor and outdoor track and field, basketball and tennis. In addition, there are also championships in football, and women s volleyball, golf and soccer. The season will mark the 20th year that the Big Sky Conference will sponsor championships in women s sports. The former Mountain West Conference existed from , sponsoring championships for women s sports at the same institutions the Big Sky had men s programs. The Big Sky merged with the Mountain West in 1988, forming one league for both men and women. Doug Fullerton, the fifth commissioner of the Big Sky Conference, is in his 13th year at the helm. Fullerton took over the Big Sky on July 1, 1995, replacing longtime commissioner Ron Stephenson. Stephenson served the league for 14 years. Steve Belko was the commissioner from , while John Roning held the post from The first league commissioner was Jack Friel, who served from Tradition, Connections and Opportunity. These are the key ingredients that make Eastern Washington University so special. They are what Eastern provides anyone engaged with the University so that they have the opportunity to start something big. Eastern provides the personal connections, unique opportunities and learning environment built from 125 years of academic excellence to help students and staff realize their something big. Tradition: EWU was established in 1882 as the Benjamin P. Cheney Academy. Starting as a school for preparing teachers at one-room schoolhouses, Eastern now has more than 10,000 students enrolled annually. Winter quarter 2007 marked the 20th consecutive quarter of enrollment increases from the previous year. Connection: Eastern offers outstanding mentoring, networking and internship opportunities through its 30,000 alumni residing in the Inland Northwest, and nearly 80,000 alumni worldwide. Opportunity: Fifty-five percent of Eastern s freshmen class are the first in their families to earn a college degree. U.S. News & World Report has ranked EWU among the top 10 master s degree-granting universities in the West. In the Kaplan/Newsweek College Catalog, Eastern was named to the list of Schools That Offer The Best Value (Quality of Education vs. Cost) For Your Tuition Dollar. Previously, Newsweek named EWU to its list of hidden treasures. Besides the new Donor Suites and Media Center at Woodward Field, other recently completed building projects on campus include the EWU Visitors Center, Computing and Engineering Building, Washington State Patrol Regional Crime Lab and Washington State Digital Archives Building. The State Archives Building is the first digital archives in the country located on a college campus. Historic buildings Monroe Hall and Senior Hall were recently renovated. Originally built in 1915, Monroe Hall was reopened in 2001 after a $6.4 million renovation project. Senior Hall, originally built in 1920, reopened in spring 2006 at a renovation cost of $9.9 million and with a furnishings and equipment cost of $1.7 million. Page 20
