1 University of Idaho Vandal Track & Field May 29-30, 2009 Weekend Notes Contact: Spencer Farrin Office: (208) Cell: (208) Coming Up This Week: Idaho s men s track and field team sends 12 athletes to the NCAA West Region Championships this weekend at Eugene, Ore. Vandal athletes qualified for the regional meet in 15 events, but 2008 All-American Elvie Williams saw his senior season cut short by a knee injury sustained during his valiant, 20.5-point effort at the WAC Championships two weeks ago. Nevertheless, Vandals should factor into plenty of events over the weekend. The top five finishers in each event qualify for the NCAA Championship meet, which will be held June at Fayetteville, Ark. Junior James Rogan enters the competition ranked fourth in the hammer throw, while sophomore Eugenio Mannucci has the region s fifth-best mark in the shot put. Sophomore Paul Dittmer will need to jump up one spot to earn his qualifying mark, as he ranks sixth in the region in the 110m hurdles, while seniors Matt Wauters and Evan Ruud sit at 12th and 14th, respectively, in the hammer throw and could surprise some people. Idaho s pole vault trio of Mike Carpenter, Jeremy Klas and Lucas Pope are tied at 21st, while senior Kyle Hook is tied at 15th in the javelin, Beau Whitney is 16th in the discus, Josh Dalton is 24th in the 800m and Jake Boling is 25th in the hammer. Last year, Idaho sent 13 men to the NCAA Regional meet and three of them advanced to the NCAA Championships. Eight of Idaho s qualifiers this weekend are repeat qualifiers, but none have advanced to the NCAA Outdoor Championships before. Wauters, a senior, is a two-time All-American from his indoor track and field exploits, but he has never qualified for the outdoor meet. Since the Regional system was implemented in 2003, one Idaho athlete has won a men s West Region title. Jan Eitel, who was the 2003 Big West Track Athlete of the Year, won the regional title in the 3,000m steeplechase and went on to take 18th at the NCAA Championships in the event. Last year at the meet, Marcus Mattox broke the Idaho school record in the hammer throw with a then-record toss of 212- Vandal athletes have broken an outdoor school record in 14 of the past 15 seasons, but have yet to take one down this season. Last Week in Vandal Track & Field: A very strong final day that included five individual titles brought the Idaho men within striking distance of the Western Athletic Conference title, but in the end, the Vandals came up just short and took second as a team. I thought the team competed very well, Idaho co-head coach Wayne Phipps said. There were ups and downs, like you ll have at every conference championship meet, but for every down we had, another guy would step up. The Vandals scored 138 points, which is the best ever score for the men at a WAC outdoor meet, while the women s team scored 58 points and finished seventh. For the women, competing without a large group that included WAC champions and All- Americans, it was a different approach, but co-head coach Yogi Teevens said that the young Vandal squad performed as well as any other young class that Idaho has seen. I m so proud of these girls right now, Teevens said. They came in here and fought for every point and competed like I knew they could. They earned some valuable experience here and it s going to go a long way toward us being one of the top teams next year and the years after that. Sophomore Paul Dittmer and junior Lucas Pope were Idaho s repeat winners on the day, as Dittmer ran a 103 to take home the 110m hurdles title and Pope won a jump-off and cleared in the pole vault. Sophomore Josh Dalton made a great move on the final stretch and took the lead with less than 20 meters remaining the 800m to win his first career WAC title, while sophomore Eugenio Mannucci fired the shot to take the lead on his final throw of the day and win the shot put. Idaho s 15 Regional qualifiers are the most the men s team has ever had. The Vandals will only send 12 athletes because of injuries, but the 2009 season features the biggest group of Idaho qualifiers since the inception of the regional system in 200 Another bonus about Idaho s large group of Regional qualifers is the fact that so many will return again next season. Of the 15 qualifiers this year, 10 are underclassmen. Among that group, four are sophomores, one is a freshman and five are juniors. Seniors Jake Boling and Matt Wauters finish their careers with a distinction that few NCAA athletes can boast. Both athletes are four-time Regional qualifiers in the hammer throw and have attended the meet every year they ve been at Idaho. Athletes who finish in the top five at a regional meet earn an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. Junior James Rogan ranks fourth in the hammer throw, while sophomore Eugenio Mannucci ranks fifth in the shot put entering the weekend. Sophomore Paul Dittmer, who took seventh last year, enters the weekend ranked sixth in the men s 110m hurdles. This year, senior Elvie Williams qualified for the regional meet in three different events. He went 25-0¾ in the long jump at the Oregon Relays, anchored Idaho s 4x100m relay that ran a at the Vandal Jamboree, then soared a personal-best 50-3¼ in the triple jump at the WAC Championships. He is the second Vandal to qualify for three events at the same regional meet, as thrower Russ Winger accomplished the feat in 2006 and 2008 (shot put, discus throw, hammer throw). Unfortunately, a knee injury suffered at the WAC Championships will keep Williams out of the regional meet this weekend. The Idaho men s track and field program has had an NCAA Championships qualifier in 13 of the last 14 outdoor seasons. The only year in which no Vandals qualified was 2007, when many of the team s top competitors redshirted. Idaho sent three men to the NCAA Outdoor Championships last season and all three left the meet as All-Americans. Six of the last 10 Vandal men to qualify for the NCAA meet have come away with All-America recognition.
