The Texas Tech contingent is comprised of Shane Brathwaite, Sally Kipyego, Shereefa Lloyd, Jamele Mason, Michael Mathieu, Andrae Williams and Jason Young. After finishing third at the U.S. Olympic Trials, Young became the second male athlete in school histroy to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team. Kipyego, who captured a remarkable nine NCAA Championships during her unprecedented Tech career, qualified for the Kenyan team in both the 5,000-meter run as well as the 10,000-meter run. Meanwhile, Brathwaite (Barbados) qualified in the 110-meter hurdles, Lloyd (Jamaica) qualified in the 4x40 relay, Mason (Puerto Rico) qualified in the 400-meter hurdles, Mathieu (Bahamas) qualified in the 200-meter dash, 400-meter dash and 4x400 relay and Williams (Bahamas) qualified in the 4x40 relay. 2 TECH ATHLETES IN LONDON SHANE BRATHWAITE BARBADOS 110MH Shane Brathwaite enters the 2012 Summer Olympics fresh off an impressive senior campaign at Texas Tech in the sprint hurdles. Brathwaite earned first team All-America honors at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships in the 110-meter hurdles. At the Texas Relays in March, Brathwaite ran a personal-best time of which propelled him to the No. 2 spot nationally First Team All-American 2012 Big 12 Runner-Up Ranked No. 6 nationally in 110-meter hurdles in Four-Time All-American at Tech (110mH & 4x400) Earned All-America honors in the 110mH and 4x400 relay at Central Arizona prior to arriving at Tech in 2011 Named 2007 Barbados Sports Personality of the Year SALLY KIPYEGO KENYA 5k & 10k The most decorated athlete in Texas Tech history, Sally Kipyego qualified for the 2012 Olympics in both the 5,000-meter run and the 10,000-meter run. During her career in Lubbock, Kipyego captured an unprecedented nine NCAA National Championships. Most recently, Kipyego captured a silver medal at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in the 10,000-meter run where she ran a time of 30: just.06 behind first place finisher Vivian Cheruiyot. Kipyego still holds six school records at Texas Tech while also holding the Big 12 Indoor Championship record in the 3,000-meter run at 9: Elite member of the Oregon Track Club IAAF World Championships Silver Medalist (10,000m) Second female athlete in NCAA track and field history to capture nine national championships Nine-time Big 12 Track and Field Champion 2008 National Female Track Athlete of the Year & 2006 JUCO National Champion in three events (1,500, 5,000m and 10,000) SHEREEFA LLOYD JAMAICA 4X400 Shereefa Lloyd will return to the Olympics after earning a bronze medal in 2008 as a member of the Jamaican 4x400 relay team. At Tech, Lloyd was a two-time All-American in the 4x400 relay and set the school record in 2004 with a time of 3:29.49 the record still stands today. Lloyd went on to twice earn silver on the world stage at the 2007 and 2009 IAAF World Championships as a member of the Jamaican 4x400 relay team. Prior to transferring to Tech, Lloyd was a two-time Athlete of the Year at Southwestern Christian College in Terrell, Texas where she was a five-time Junior College All-American. Bronze medalist at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the 4x400 Relay Won silver at the 2009 IAAF World Championships in the 4x400 relay. Won silver at the 2007 IAA World Championships in the 4x400 relay. There, he set a new school record and personal-best with a time of His second place finish was the best by a Red Raider in the 400-meter hurdles at the NCAA Championships in school history. 3 TECH ATHLETES IN LONDON MICHAEL MATHIEU BAHAMAS 200M, 400M, 4X400 Michael Mathieu returns to the Olympics alongside former Red Raider Andrae Williams as the two will compete on the Bahamian 4x400 relay team. Mathieu helped guide the Bahamian squad to a silver medal at the 2008 Beijing Games with a second-place time of 2: At Tech, Mathieu was a three-time All-American from In 2005 helped set the school 4x400 record time of 3:01.69 in the preliminary round of the 2005 NCAA Championships. Helped set current school 4x400 relay record in ANDRAE WILLIAMS BAHAMAS 4X400 Andrae Williams returns to the Olympic Games where he won silver in 2008 as a member of the Bahamian 4x400 relay team alongside teammate and former Red Raider Michael Mathieu. At Texas Tech, Williams was a four-time All-American where he helped set the current school outdoor 4x400 relay record in the preliminary round of the 2005 NCAA Championships silver medalist at the 2008 Olympic Games in the 4x400 relay. Helped set current 4x400 relay record in JASON YOUNG UNITED STATES DISCUS With a third place finish at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene, Ore., Jason Young became the second Red Raider to qualify for the U.S. Olympic team in school history. Two Red Raider hurdlers who competed for Texas Tech this year, Jamele Mason and Shane Brathwaite, will compete in London at the 2012 Olympic Games. Mason was the 2012 NCAA Runner-Up with a second place and school record time of The former Red Raider will run for Puerto Rico in London. Meanwhile, first team All-American Shane Brathwaite will also compete at the 2012 Olympic Games as a Texas Tech hurdling product. Brathwaite will represent Barbados in the 110-meter hurdles after capping off his Red Raider career with a seventh place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championships. Silver Medalists Return for More Michael Mathieu and Andrae Williams will return to the Olympics by representing the Bahamas after earning silver medals as members of the 4x400 relay team at the 2008 Games. The pair of Bahamians have both qualified for the relay pool while Mathieu also qualified in the 200-meter and 400-meter dash. -3- Kipyego Favorite to Medal(s) Former Texas Tech standout distance runner Sally Kipyego qualified in both the 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter run and is a favorite to medal in both.
