All Day 2012 TEXAS TECH RED RAIDER OPEN 2012 RED RAIDER OPEN QUICK FACTS Who...Texas Tech Track and Field What Red Raider Open When...May 5, 2012 Where...Terry and Linda Fuller Track and Field Complex - Lubbock, Texas TECH HOSTS RED RAIDER OPEN IN FINAL 2012 HOME OUTDOOR MEET LUBBOCK, Texas - The Texas Tech track and field team is set to compete in its final home outdoor meet of the 2012 season as the No. 9 Lady Raiders and No. 10 Red Raiders host the Red Raider Open Saturday at the Fuller Track and Field Complex. Action will start at 10 a.m. with field events held at the throws complex. The running events are scheduled to start at the Fuller Track and Field Complex at 6 p.m. with the men s 4x800 meter relay. Saturday s Red Raider Open will mark the final opportunity for 21 Texas Tech seniors to compete at home. The senior class has made its mark under head coach Wes Kittley as nine athletes garnered All-American honors during their careers in Lubbock. Meanwhile, the meet will also serve as a final chance for the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders to prepare for the Big 12 outdoor championships next weekend in Manhattan, Kan. Sr. WHO TO WATCH: GIL ROBERTS Sprints Senior sprinter Gil Roberts is looking to ride the momentum of a historic indoor season as he captured the U.S. 400 meter championship and was a member of the U.S. 4x400 relay team that captured gold at the IAAF World Championships in Istanbul in March. Roberts is scheduled to compete in his first 400 meter race of the outdoor season this weekend. Roberts is a four-time All-American and won the 2009 Big 12 Outdoor Championship in the 400 meter dash with a school record and personal best time of THE ROBERTS FILE: Hometown: Oklahoma City, Okla. Member of the 2009 United States World Championships team... finished second at the outdoor U.S. Champinoships Big 12 outdoor 400M champion with a school record and personal best time of U.S. 400m Champion 2012 Indoors IAAFWorld Champion 4x400 Relay 2012 Indoors CATCHING UP WITH TEXAS TECH - PENN RELAYS/WTAMU OPEN - APRIL 28 (April 28, 2012) PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - The Lady Raider 4x400 relay team placed third overall Saturday in the Championships of America round of the Penn Relays as Texas Tech closed out competition at the 117th edition of the historic meet Saturday afternoon. The relay squad, comprised of Precious Nwokey, Candace Jackson, Taylor Evans and Olivia Lewis ran a time of 3:35.37 Saturday at Franklin Field on the final day of competition at the University of Pennsylvania. The team qualified for the Championships of America after placing fifth in the preliminaries on Thursday with a time of 3: Meanwhile, the Red Raider 4x400 relay team finished seventh overall in the finals with a time of 3: The squad qualified on Friday after placing fifth with a time of 3: The Red Raider 4x100 relay team also placed seventh in the Championships of America with a mark of The time improved upon their qualifying time of 40.40, which the squad ran on Friday. The 4x100 team includes Ben McRoy, Markus Henderson, Shane Brathwaite and Isaiah Gill. After qualifying on Friday, Nwokey also competed in the finals of the women s 100 meter hurdles on Saturday where she placed sixth with a time of In the field events, senior Dellon Williams finished fourth in the triple jump with a leap of meters ( ). It marked his second best jump of the season. Teammate Travis Dunn followed with a mark of meters ( ), good for 14th. (April 28, 2012) CANYON, Texas - Texas Tech collected eight first place finishes, and junior Ifeatu Okafor recorded a national Top 10 mark in the discus throw as the No. 9 Red Raiders and No. 11 Lady Raiders competed at the West Texas A&M Open Saturday. Okafor recorded a throw of meters ( ) to run away with the win in the women s discus event. The mark ranks No. 9 nationally and is the best mark by a Lady Raider since the 2009 season. Okafor also earned a win in the shot put competition with a mark of meters ( ). Caitlin Waters and Kaci Westervelt also earned wins Saturday for the Lady Raiders. Waters won the 800 meter run with a mark of 2:12.59 while Westervelt finished first in the 5,000 meter run with a time of 18: Sophomore Kole Weldon earned his fourth win of the outdoor season in the shot put with a toss of meters ( ), while freshman Killian Barry earned his earned his second win of the season in the hammer throw. Barry won with a mark of meters ( ). Sophomore Sirron Warren and freshman Kyle Thompson also collected wins for the Red Raiders on Saturday. Thompson earned his first career win in the pole vault by clearing the bar at 4.68 meters ( ). Meanwhile, Warren placed first in the men s 800 meter run with a time of 1:52.70.

Okafor has captured three first place finishes in the shot put and two in the discus. Last weekend at the West Texas A&M Open, Okafor tossed a personal-best mark of ( ) to runaway with the victory. Okafor s throw was the best by a Lady Raider since the 2009 season and currently ranks No. 9 in the country. She has a total of 11 top-five finishes this season. Okafor is a two-time All-American in the shot put and also holds the school record in the event. Nine career wins in the shot put (indoor & outdoor)...three career wins in the discus (indoor & outdoor.) 2012 INDOOR ALL-AMERICANS On the heels of the 2012 Indoor Championships Texas Tech earned a total of nine indoor All-American honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday. Junior Bryce Lamb, who placed fourth overall in the long jump, along with members of the Lady Raider 4x400 relay team earned first team All-American honors. The 4x400 relay team comprised of Taylor Evans, Candace Jackson, Erica Alexander and Olivia Lewis, finished seventh overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho over the weekend. Meanwhile, Kelly Closse (weight throw, shot put), Katie Grimes (60 meter hurdles) and Kyal Meyers (pole vault) each earned second-team honors. 5 2012 TRACK AND FIELD BBC FOLLOWS OLYMPIC HOPEFULS TO TEXAS TECH, VTM-TV TO ALSO COVER RED RAIDER OPEN As part of a two-year long project entitled `World Olympic Dreams the British Broadcasting Corporation will film a segment for the long-term documentary and television series in Lubbock on Saturday at the Red Raider Open meet hosted by Texas Tech. The BBC, a 24-hour world news station, is following a group of 25 athletes as they aspire to qualify for the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London. A group of 12 athletes from the Belgium national team will compete this weekend at the Red Raider Open. The segment is scheduled to air in June - a specific date has yet to be determined. VTM ( Vlaamse Televisie Maatschappij), a Belgium television station, will also be present to cover the meet. The station is documenting the experiences and training benefits that Belgium athletes receive by competing in the United States. Highlighting the arival of the Belgium national team are twin brothers Kevin and Jonathon Borlee - members of the Belgium 4x400 relay team and some of the top 400 meter sprinters in the world. Kevin earned a bronze medal for Belgium in the 400 meter dash at the 2011 IAAF World Championships, and a gold medal at the 2010 European Championships in Barcelona TECH SENIORS Texas Tech boasts a total of 21 seniors on its 2012 outdoor roster with 15 scheduled to compete Saturday at the Fuller Track and Field Complex in their final home meet. Two of Tech s seniors, Jamele Mason and Shane Brathwaite, have jumped out to fast starts to the season, both ranking among the top in the nation. Shane Brathwaite enters this week as the No meter hurdler in the country (No. 1 in the Big 12) with a season-best time of recorded at the Texas Relays. He also ranks No. 16 nationally, No. 3 in the Big 12, in the 400 meter hurdles. Meanwhile teammate Jamele Mason ranks No. 2 nationally in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of which he recorded on April 7 at the LSU Invitational Battle on the Bayou. He also ranks No. 10 in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of Mason s times rank No. 1 and No. 4 in the Big 12. Entering his 13th season at the helm of the Texas Tech track and field program, the veteran head coach has made his distinct mark on the program as he continues to maintain its status as one of the elite programs in the country. With his program consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the national polls, Kittley has produced a plethora of top athletes in the country. Over the past ten years, Kittley has had 141 All-Americans and 92 Big 12 Champions in their respective events. He coached Jonathan Johnson to the NCAA title in the 800M and Sally Kipyego won nine national championships in cross-country, the indoor 3000M and 5000M, and the outdoor 10000M. Kipyego became only the second female in NCAA Division I history to win nine NCAA titles and she is also the most decorated athlete in Big 12 history with 14 titles. 6 2012 TRACK AND FIELD TECH NOTABLES WELDON IN MIDST OF STELLAR SOPHOMORE CAMPAIGN Kole Weldon has had a banner year in 2012, and it only continued at the Texas Tech Open on April 14. The sophomore transfer from Midwestern set two personal bests during the outdoor home opener in both the discus and the shot put. Weldon placed second in the discus with a toss of meters ( ). The throw ranks No. 4 in the country entering this weekend. Meanwhile, Weldon also set a personal record in the shot put with a throw of ( ). He enters the Red Raider Open ranked No. 5 in the Big 12 in the shot put and No. 3 in the Discus and looking to head into the conference championships on a high note. After earning first team All-American honors during the indoor season with a third place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships he hasn t missed a beat. At the Texas Relays, Lamb recorded a season-best mark of 7.94 meters ( ) on his second attempt. The jump ranks No. 3 in the country entering this weekend. Lamb is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American in the long jump and in 2010 he was named Performer of the Year and Oustanding Freshman by the Big 12 Conference during Bryce Lamb the indoor season. LAMB SEASON CAPSULE Shade Weygandt has already established herself as one of the top female pole vaulters in Texas Tech history and has continued her unparalleled career during the 2012 outdoor season. Weygandt, the first Texas Tech female All- American in the pole vault, enters the weekend ranked No. 4 in the country and tops in the Big 12 in the pole vault with a season-best mark of 4.35 meters ( ) which she cleared at the Texas Relays. Weygandt owns each of the top-five marks in school history in the women s pole vault and has a commanding grasp on the conference lead in the event.
