SUMMER 2016 SCHEDULE JULY Olympic Trials Eugene, Ore World Junior Championships Kazan, Russia AUGUST Olympic Games Rio de Janeiro, Texas Tech track & field continues with their indoor campaign, sending squads to the New Mexico Collegiate Classic (Albuquerque, New Mexico) and the Frank Sevigne Husker Invite (Lincoln, Nebraska), on Feb Among the competition the Red Raiders will face this weekend besides hosts New Mexico and Nebraska (M: 15) are ranked teams in Big 12 foes Texas (M: 3, W: 5) and Kansas State (M: 24, W: 6), as well as LSU (M: 5, W: 18), USC (M: 17, W: 7) and Alabama (M: 14, W: 23). It will be the first opportunity for the multi-eventers to compete in the heptathlon and pentathlon. The first event at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational starts at 11 a.m. CST on Friday (Hep. 60m), while the first event at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic begins at 5 p.m. CST on Friday (men s pole vault & 60-meter hurdle prelims and women s weight throw). Saturday s action starts at 8:30 a.m. CST from Nebraska (Hep. 60-meter hurdles) and 10:30 a.m. CST from New Mexico (women s shot put). The men s team climbed to No. 14 in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) computer rankings this week. It marked back-to-back weeks the Red Raiders have improved from their previous spot in the poll, moving from No. 17 in the preseason poll and No. 15 last week. Chris Caldwell was named Big 12 Co-Athlete of the Week after his performance at the Arkansas Invitational on Jan. 15. Caldwell ranks first in the Big 12 and eighth in the NCAA this season in the 60-meter hurdles, checking in with a time of 7.75 seconds. In three meets this season, Caldwell has not lost a 60-meter hurdle race this season. Last weekend at the New Mexico Team Invitational, the Red Raiders added three more marks to Texas Tech all-time top 10 lists, making it five on the season. Viershanie Latham, who had already reached the seventh-best mark in school history in the triple jump, broke the school record in the event after a leap of 13.05m/ Natalie Thompson cleared 1.78m/5-10 in the women s high jump, tying the seventh-best jump in school history and Joseph Richards III ran in the 400 meters to tie for the fifth-best time. There were 29 PR s by Tech last weekend. The first weekend treated Texas Tech well, where the Scarlet & Black racked up 29 personalbests, to go along with their three first-place finishes. The Red Raiders also added three marks to the all-time Texas Tech top 10 lists, including a school record. They look to build off of the first week s success when they return on Friday and Saturday. LEAVING THEIR MARK In each of the first two meets, the Red Raiders found their way into the top 10 all-time marks list in the indoor school record books. Last weekend, they added three more marks to those lists, along with 29 overall personal-bests. Viershanie Latham, who had already reached the seventh-best triple jump mark with her performance at the Arkansas Invitational, shattered the school record in Albuquerque with a leap of 13.05m/ She now owns five of the top 10 marks in Texas Tech history. Joseph Richards III, who helped the 4x400-meter relay team to the 10th-best time in school history at 3:07.40 at the Texas A&M Quadrangular, ran in the open 400 meters to tie the fifth-best mark in the event. For the secondstraight meet, Natalie Thompson set a PR in the women s high jump, clearing 1.78m/5-10, which is tied for the seventh-best clearance in Texas Tech history. CALD AS ICE Three meets. Three 60-meter hurdle wins for Chris Caldwell. In 2016, Chris Caldwell has won every hurdle face he s competed in, opening up with the then-national-leading and now eighth-best time in the NCAA at 7.75 seconds at the Arkansas Invitational. At the Texas A&M Quadrangular, he and teammate Darien Tennon went 1-2 to claim the event at 8.00 and 8.12, respectively. Last weekend, he put up a time of 7.78 seconds for his third-straight victory in the event. His win also continued his streak of placing first or second in every indoor hurdle final he s competed in while at Texas Tech. JUMPMAN JUMPMAN JUMPMAN Tech s vertical and horizontal jumpers put together another strong outing at the New Mexico Team Invitational last weekend. Trey Culver and Bradley Adkins finished second and third in the men s high jump after clearing the bar at 2.18m/ The mark matched Culver s indoor personal-best and was a seasonal-best for Adkins. The duo sit at No. 2 in the conference and sixth in the NCAA this season with the clearance. On the women s side, Natalie Thompson set a PR for the second-straight week en route to a third-place finish at 1.78m/5-10, which ties her for seventh all-time at Texas Tech. Shanice Stewart racked up a second-place mark in the women s long jump after hitting a distance of 6.19m/ In the triple jump, Viershanie Latham used a school record leap of 13.05m/ to propel herself to the top mark in the Big 12 and ninth-best in the NCAA. KEEPIN UP WITH THE JONES C.J. Jones is off to an impressive start to the 2016, finishing first or second in all five races he s competed in this season. Two of his four first-place marks have come while running the 4x400-meter relay, while the other two have come in the 600 meters, posting a personal-best last weekend in Albuquerque behind a time of 1: Converted to the 600 yards, that time is the second-fastest in the Big 12 this season. His only runner-up mark was in the 800-meter run, but was also a PR, clocking in at 1: That mark leads the conference and is half a second from the 10th-best time in school history. MOVIN UP The Texas Tech men s team continued to move up in the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) computer rankings this week, up to No. 14. It s the second-straight week the Red Raiders have improved their spot, debuting in the preseason poll at No. 17 and moving up from No. 15 last week. Tech is one of five Big 12 schools in the top 25 in this week s poll, as Texas leads the way at No. 3, followed by TCU (7), Oklahoma State (20) and Kansas State (24). On the women s side, Texas and Kansas State are at the top of the leaderboard at fifth and sixth, respectively, while Baylor (13) and Oklahoma State (21) also check into the poll. AWARDS SEASON Senior Chris Caldwell was named Big 12 Co-Athlete of the Week on Jan. 20 after an impressive opening performance in the 60-meter hurdles. The Wildwood, Missouri, native rattled off a time of 7.75 seconds to earn the victory, which ranked first in the Big 12, second in the NCAA and eighth in the world this season. It was the second conference accolade of his career at Texas Tech and continued a streak of finishing first or second in every hurdle-final he s competed in while donning the Scarlet & Black. ON THE DOCKET The Red Raiders split up again next week, with a group returning to Fayetteville for the Tyson Invitational and another going to Nashville, Tennessee, for the Music City Challenge on Feb TEXASTECH.COM
