All Day June OUTDOOR 6-9 NCAA Outdoor Championships...Des Moines, Ia...All Day TECH SET TO HOST OUTDOOR HOME OPENER LUBBOCK, Texas - After beginning the outdoor season with four highly-competitive meets away from Lubbock, the No. 8 Red Raiders and No. 11 Lady Raiders return home to host the Texas Tech Open at the Fuller Track and Field Complex on Saturday. The meet is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. with the field events while action on the track will begin at 3 p.m. A total of 33 teams are scheduled to compete Saturday including Baylor which enters the meet with both its men s and women s teams ranked in the Top 25. The Texas Tech track and field squad has had a fast start to the outdoor season, and both of Kittley s squads are looking to continue that momentum in the first of two outdoor meets scheduled to take place at the Fuller Track and Field Complex this spring. WHO TO WATCH: SHADE WEYGANDT First Texas Tech Female All-American Pole Vaulter Jr Pole Vault Junior pole vaulter Shade Weygandt has had an impressive start to the 2012 outdoor season highlighted by a third-place finish at the Texas Relays, a venue where Weygand has historically found success. In Austin, she vaulted 4.35 meters ( ). The mark ranks No. 3 nationally entering the Texas Tech Open. Weygandt has already vaulted over 14-feet twice this season. CATCHING UP WITH TEXAS TECH - LSU INVITATIONAL BATTLE ON THE BAYOU - APRIL 7 (April 7, 2012) BATON ROUGE, La. - Texas Tech captured a total of four first-place finishes and the Lady Raider 4x100 relay team ran the second-fastest time in school history on Saturday at Bernie Moore Stadium in the second annual LSU Invitational Battle on the Bayou. In a meet that featured six nationally-ranked squads, the No. 10 Lady Raiders placed 2nd overall among the women s teams with 102 points. The No. 7 Red Raiders placed 8th with a total of 62 points. The Lady Raider 4x100 relay team put on a show Saturday by running the second-fastest time in school history. The squad finished second to LSU with a blazing fast time of The time bested the mark of recorded last year at the Texas Tech Open on April 4. The mark was just off of the school record time of set in The relay team is comprised of Candace Jackson, Terra Evans, Cierra White and Erica Alexander and their time currently ranks No. 9 in the country. Just before the women s 4x100 relay, sophomore Kyal Meyers captured his first win of the outdoor season in the pole vault by clearing the bar at a seasonal-best height of 5.29 meters ( ). Meanwhile, junior Shade Weygandt followed up Meyers performance with a first place finish of her own on the way to tying the Bernie Moore Stadium facility record by clearing the bar at 4.33 meters ( ). Jamele Mason captured a first-place finish in the men s 400 meter hurdles with a time of It marked his second win of the season in the 400 meter hurdles. Freshman Michaela Palu earned the first win of her career in the women s high jump competition by clearing the bar at 1.71 meters ( ). Junior Ifeatu Okafor, who entered the meet ranked No. 6 nationally in the shot put, placed second in the event with a mark of meters ( ). She also placed fourth in the discus with a mark of meters ( ). Kole Weldon continued his strong start to the outdoor season by capturing two top five finishes on the day. The sophomore began his meet by placing third in the discus with a throw of meters ( ). He then followed it up with a fifth place finish in the shot put with a toss of meters ( ). Weldon now has eight top-five finishes on the year. Senior Rose Tanui, who competed at the Stanford Invitational this weekend, placed 15th in the 10,000 meter run Friday night with a time of 33:08.70.

Throws Sophomore thrower Kole Weldon has established himself as one of the program s top athletes during the 2012 outdoor season. After grabbing a first place finish in the shot put and a second place finish in the discus at the Willie Williams Classic to open the year, he has gone on to collect a total of eight Top 5 finishes in just four meets. No Prelims TECH BRINGS HOME NINE ALL-AMERICAN HONORS On the heels of the 2012 Indoor Championships Texas Tech earned a total of nine indoor All-American honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday. Junior Bryce Lamb, who placed fourth overall in the long jump, along with members of the Lady Raider 4x400 relay team earned first team All-American honors. The 4x400 relay team comprised of Taylor Evans, Candace Jackson, Erica Alexander and Olivia Lewis, finished seventh overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho over the weekend. 5 2012 TRACK AND FIELD TEXAS TECH IN THE USTFCCCA NATIONAL RANKINGS TECH MAKES HISTORY IN TOP 25 POLL APPEARNCES Texas Tech opened the 2012 outdoor season with both squads ranked in the national Top 10 of the USTFCCCA computer poll. The Red Raiders appeared at No. 4 while the Lady Raiders opened at No. 9 in the preseason poll released on March 22nd. The two squads remained in the top 10 as the week one poll was released on April 3 marking the first time since the USTFCCCA Poll was established in 2008 that both teams have been ranked in the Top 10 in consecutive weeks. Following an appearance at the LSU Battle at the Bayou in Baton Rouge The Red Raiders (No. 8) and Lady Raiders (No. 11) each dropped a spot in the most recent poll released on April 10th. TECH HURDLERS MASON, BRATHWAITE RANK AMONG NATION S BEST IN MEN S HURDLES Texas Tech has long been known for producing some of the best hurdlers in the country and the 2012 season has been no different. Two of Tech s seniors, Jamele Mason and Shane Brathwaite, have jumped out to fast starts to the outdoor season, both ranking among the top in the nation. Shane Brathwaite enters the Texas Tech open as the No meter hurdler in the country with a season-best time of recorded at the Texas Relays. He also ranks No. 11 in the 400 meter hurdles. Brathwaite is also a member of the No. 6-ranked men s 4x100 relay team. Meanwhile teammate Jamele Mason ranks No. 2 nationally in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of which he recorded last week at the LSU Invitational Battle on the Bayou. Entering his 13th season at the helm of the Texas Tech track and field program, the veteran head coach has made his distinct mark on the program as he continues to maintain its status as one of the elite programs in the country. With his program consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the national polls, Kittley has produced a plethora of top athletes in the country. Over the past ten years, Kittley has had 141 All-Americans and 92 Big 12 Champions in their respective events. He coached Jonathan Johnson to the NCAA title in the 800M and Sally Kipyego won nine national championships in cross-country, the indoor 3000M and 5000M, and the outdoor 10000M. Kipyego became only the second female in NCAA Division I history to win nine NCAA titles and she is also the most decorated athlete in Big 12 history with 14 titles. 6 2012 TRACK AND FIELD TECH NOTABLES GRIMES CRACKS TOP-15, Katie Grimes GRIMES SEASON CAPSULE Katie Grimes impressed at the LSU Invitational last week running a season-best in the 100 meter hurdles. The mark propelled her into the Top-15 nationally in the event at No. 15. Grimes is coming off of a banner indoor season where she received second-team All-American honors in the 60 meter hurdles. Last year, she had a total of six first place finishes and finished the season with the second-best mark in the country (17.77 meters ( ). She began the 2012 outdoor season with a first-place finish at the Willie Williams Classic and has since garnered a top three finish in each of the first three meets of the season. The three first place finishes are currently the most in the program. Bryce Lamb has a knack for getting off to fast starts and has done it again during the 2012 outdoor season. After earning first team All-American honors during the indoor season with a third place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships he hasn t missed a beat. At the Texas RelaysLamb recorded a mark of 7.94 meters ( ) on his second attempt. The jump ranks No. 3 in the country entering this weekend. Lamb is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American in the long jump and in 2010 he was named Performer of the Year and Oustanding Freshman by the Big 12 Conference during the indoor season.
