All Day June OUTDOOR 6-9 NCAA Outdoor Championships...Des Moines, Ia...All Day 2012 BIG 12 INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS TECH HEADS TO BIG 12 INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS On the heels of one of the toughest indoor schedules in school history, the Texas Tech track and field team is set to compete at the Big 12 Indoor Championships this weekend in College Station. The squad enters the conference indoor championship meet after spending the previous month participating in some of the elite meets throughout the country including the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge, the New Balance Invitational, the Tyson Invitational and the UNM Don Kirby Collegiate Elite. Texas Tech enters the Big 12 Indoor Championships with nine athletes ranked in the Top 20 on the national indoor performance list in their respective events, including three in the Top 10. Texas Tech also returns sophomore Kyal Meyersthe defending Big 12 Indoor Pole Vault Champion and 2011 Outstanding Freshman of the Year. Bryce Lamb, one of the top long jumpers in the country, also returns for the Red Raiders. Lamb secured wins in both the long jump and triple jump during the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Championships. Meanwhile the junior, who garnered Performer of the Year honors in 2010, was the High Point Scorer at the 2010 Big 12 Indoor Championships. WHO TO WATCH: KATIE GRIMES Junior Hurdles Katie Grimes returns to the site where she set (and later broke) the school record in the 60 meter hurdles. On Jan. 27, the Canyon, Texas native ran an 8.33 in her first 60 meter hurdle race of the season. The time broke the school record, and Grimes placed first in the event. She has since broke the school record twice more and looks to have another impressive showing this weekend. Junior Katie Grimes continued her phenomenal 2012 indoor season by yet again improving on her times in the 60 meter hurdles, while again setting a school record. The Canyon, Texas native ran a school record 8.18 in the prelims, a time that currently ranks sixth in the nation. Grimes later ran an 8.20, to finish in third in the finals. Both were improvements from her record-setting mark of 8.28 at the New Balance Invitational just last week. Teammate Roxie Greve ran a qualifying time of 8.85 in the preliminaries and followed with a 8.90 in the finals. The time of 8.85 is a season-best for Greve in the 60 meter hurdles. Senior All-American weight thrower Kelly Closse broke the school record in the weight throw for the third consecutive week. Closse won the event with a toss of The mark is just a.25 off of the top distance in the country. (1/10-11/12) - Texas Tech completed competition in the prestigious Tyson Invitational meet on Saturday afternoon. Three of the six Tech athletes who competed in the meet set seasonal bests. Texas Tech competed against 10 nationally-ranked teams at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Reid Strong set a personal best in both the mile and the 3,000 meter run. The sophomore ran a 4:13.33 Friday which was four seconds faster than his previous best set last season at the Tyson Invitational. In the final day of action the Abilene native ran an 8:28.10 in the 3,000 meter run to set a seasonal best.

Jr. Long Jump Junior All-American Bryce Lamb got off to a quick start to the 2012 indoor season, jumping 7.94m ( ) in his first meet of the season at the Texas Tech Open. The mark stands as his best of the year and ranks No. 3 on the national indoor list. Tech Hurdlers Have Impressive Showing in New York NEW YORK, NY - (2/3-4/12) Texas Tech completed the first day of competition in the prestigious New Balance Invitational at the Amory Track Center in New York City Friday evening. During the opening day of the meet, Tech saw a record breaking performance out of its hurdlers. Junior Katie Grimes broke the women s indoor 60 meter hurdles record by running an 8.28 and placing fourth in the consolation heat. Meanwhile, senior Shane Brathwaite garnered a Top 5 finish in the men s 60m hurdles finishing fifth with a personal-best time of Grimes broke the school record of 8.33 which she set just last week at the Texas A&M Challenge. Senior Jamele Mason finished third in the consolation heat with a season-best time of Relay Squad Runs Season-Best Time in New York NEW YORK, NY -Following an impressive showing from the hurdles group in day one of the New Balance Invitational, Tech saw its 4x400 relay teams register quality performances against some of the top teams in the country. The women s 4x400 relay team, comprised of Candace Jackson, Erica Alexander, Olivia Lewis and Taylor Evans captured a third place finish with a season-best time of 3: The squad bested relay teams from No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Arkansas. Meanwhile, the men s 4x400 relay team garnered a fourth place finish with a time of 3:11.33, just two second off their fastest time of the year. NEW BALANCE INVITATIONAL

5 2012 TRACK AND FIELD TECH ENTERS WEEKEND WITH NINE ATHLETES RANKED IN TOP 20 Texas Tech enters the indoor conference championships week with nine athletes currently ranked among the Top-20 in their respective events on the national performance list. Leading the Red Raiders at the top of the list is junior long jumper Bryce Lamb, whose mark of 7.94m ( ) on Jan. 20 currently ranks No. 3 in the nation. The mark was just under the NCAA automatic qualifying standard of 8.00m. Meanwhile, senior thrower Kelly Close also appears in the top five with an automatic qualifying mark of 21.62m ( ) in the weight throw. The mark currently ranks No. 3 on the national indoor list. Closse also ranks 10th on the national indoor list in the shot put with a mark of 16.83m ( ). Rounding out the Red Raiders on the national indoor list are Kyal Meyers (12th pole vault), Shane Brathwaite (12th 60m hurdles) and Dellon Williams (17th long jump). Joining Closse in the Top-20 of the women s indoor list are Katie Grime (8th 60m hurdles), Precious Nwokey (13th Indoor Pent.), Ifeatu Okafor (14th Shot Put) and Cierra White (16th 200 meter). TEXAS TECH AT THE BIG 12 INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIPS Texas Tech has had 37 Big 12 Indoor Champions since the inaugural Big 12 Indoor Championship meet in Defending Big 12 Indoor Champions on Tech s roster include Kelly Closse (weight throw), Bryce Lamb (long jump) and Kyal Meyers (pole vault). The Lady Raiders have had seven consecutive Top 5 finishes at the Big 12 Indoor Championships. The men s team has had back-to-back 5th place finishes. Tech s best finish in school history occurred at both the 2009 and 2010 indoor championships when the women s squad finished in 2nd. 6 2012 TRACK AND FIELD QUICK NOTES CLOSSE HAS RECORD-BREAKING SEASON Kelly Closse has had an extraordinary 2012 indoor season. The 2011 indoor All-American has re-written the Texas Tech indoor weight throw record book in just over a month time-period. The Les Abymes, France native now owns four of the top-five marks in school history in the weight throw. Three of the marks were set this season. Closse transferred to Texas Tech after capturing five NJCAA Championships at South Plains College in nearby Levelland, Texas. She was also a six-time NJCAA All-American selection. GRIMES HAS PROVEN CONSISTENCY Junior hurdler Katie Grimes has had a career-defining 2012 indoor season. The Canyon, Texas native enters the Big 12 Indoor Championship in possession of four of the top-five 60 meter hurdles times in school history. Texas Tech coaches have been most impressed with her consistency throughout the season, and ability to continue to improve her times as the year progresses. Grimes has broken the school record in the 60 meter hurdles in three consecutive weeks (Jan. 28, Feb. 4, Feb. 10). LAMB BENEFITS FROM QUICK START Junior long jumper Bryce Lamb wasted little time leaping to the top of the national indoor list. The 2011 Indoor All- American recorded a jump of in his first meet of the season on Jan 20. The mark currently ranks No. 3 on the national indoor list and is just outside the NCAA Automatic Qualifying mark. INTO THE FIRE The Texas Tech track and field program amped up its schedule for the 2012 season. In what head coach Wes Kittley has described as putting his team into the fire, the squad has competed in several of the top meets in the country during the indoor season. Those elite meets include the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge, the New Balance Invitational, the Tyson Invitational and the UNM Don Kirby Collegiate Elite in just over a month. Between the Tyson Invitational and the UNM Don Kirby Collegiate Elite, Tech competed against 15 of the Top-25 teams in the nation in one weekend of action. Meanwhile at the Texas A&M Mondo Challenge, eight teams entered the meet ranked in the Top 25. TWO SCHOOL RECORDS BROKEN AT UNM COLLEGIATE ELITE The Texas Tech track and field team continued its stretch of highly-competitive meets by participating in the UNM Don Kirby Collegiate Elite on Feb. 11. The squad saw a total of 12 athletes improve their season-best marks on the day, along with a season-best mark of 3:35.80 by the women s 4x400 relay team. Junior Katie Grimes continued her phenomenal 2012 indoor season by yet again improving on her times in the 60 meter hurdles, and again setting a school record. The Canyon, Texas native ran a school record 8.18 in the prelims, a time that currently ranks sixth in the nation. Grimes later ran an 8.20, to finish in third in the finals. Teammate Roxie Greve ran a qualifying time of 8.85 in the preliminaries and followed with a 8.90 in the finals. The time of 8.85 is a season-best for Greve in the 60 meter hurdles. Senior All-American weight thrower Kelly Closse broke the school record in the weight throw for the third consecutive week. Closse won the event with a toss of The mark is just a.25 off of the top distance in the country. TECH COMPLETES COMPETITION AT TYSON INVITATIONAL Texas Tech completed competition in the prestigious Tyson Invitational meet on Feb. 11. Three of the six Tech athletes who competed in the meet set seasonal bests. Texas Tech competed against 10 nationally-ranked teams at the Randal Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark. Reid Strong set a personal best in both the mile and the 3,000 meter run. The sophomore ran a 4:13.33 Friday which was four seconds faster than his previous best set last season at the Tyson Invitational. In the final day of action the Abilene native ran an 8:28.10 in the 3,000 meter run to set a seasonal best. Strong placed 14th out of 24 athletes in the mile and 15th out of 36 in the 3,000 meter run. Meanwhile, Brendan Devlin set a season-best mark in the 3,000 meter run with a time of 9:01--a solid 12 seconds off of his mark set at the Texas Tech Open on Jan. 21. Sophomore Rachel Folan also set a season-best mark in the mile run with a time of 5:10.06 to place 15th out of 23 in the event. KITTLEY ENTERS 13TH YEAR AT HELM OF TEXAS TECH Led by head coach Wes Kittley, the Red Raiders boast one of the most experienced and well-respected coaching staffs in the country. Entering his 13th season at the helm of the Texas Tech track and field program, the veteran head coach has made his distinct mark on the program as he continues to maintain its status as one of the elite programs in the country. With his program consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the national polls, Kittley has produced a plethora of top athletes in the country. Over the past ten years, Kittley has had 141 All-Americans and 92 Big 12 Champions in their respective events. He coached Jonathan Johnson to the NCAA title in the 800M and Sally Kipyego won nine national championships in cross-country, the indoor 3000M and 5000M, and the outdoor 10000M. Kipyego became only the second female in NCAA Division I history to win nine NCAA titles and she is also the most decorated athlete in Big 12 history with 14 titles. Under Kittley s guidance, the 2010 season was the most productive at the NCAA Championship meets with a total of 32 All-American honors being earned. Tech claimed 17 indoor honors and 15 outdoor honors during the season. Gilbert Limo (steeplechase), Shade Weygandt (pole vault), the women s distance medley relay and the women s 4x100M relay garnered the school s first All-American honors in their respective events. Meanwhile, Bryce Lamb became the first Big 12 athlete to be named Big 12 Indoor Performer of the Year, Freshman of the Year and High Point Performer of the Big 12 meet all in one season. Weygandt was also the first Tech student-athlete to win a conference pole vault title after winning the indoor and outdoor titles. During his time at Tech, Kittley has brought the program up from ground level, turning it into a powerhouse. The 2005 season is considered by most to be the best season either program has ever seen. The men s squad won the 2005 Big 12 Outdoor Championships, the first track and field team title for Texas Tech.
