TECH HEADS NORTH TO MANHATTAN FOR BIG 12 CHAMPIONSHIPS MANHATTAN, Kan. - Fresh off one of the most impressive performances this season the No. 3 Red Raiders and No. 6 Lady Raiders are primed to compete for the Big 12 Championships this weekend. Action begins Friday afternoon with the start of the Heptathlon and Decathlon events and will continue through Sunday at the R.V. Christian Track Complex at Kansas State. Kittley and his team will return to the track where the Red Raiders captured the 2005 Big 12 Championship. Texas Tech enters the weekend with athletes ranked No. 1 in the Big 12 in six separate events. Last weekend, Texas Tech capped off an impressive performance in the final home outdoor meet of the season. Two school records were broken and senior sprinter Gil Roberts made his return in the 400 meter dash, earning a first place finish with a time of 44.93, and jumped to the top spot in the country. The Lady Raider 4x100 relay team opened the running events at the Red Raider Open and broke a seven-year school record with a time of Junior pole vaulter Shade Weygandt, who earned Big 12 Athlete of the Week honors Wednesday, followed by breaking her own school record with a clearance of 4.50 meters ( ). Both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders will look to ride the momentum from last weekend into the Big 12 Championships beginning Friday afternoon as Precious Nwokey opens competition for Texas Tech by competing in the first day of the women s decathlon. Last weekend at the Red Raider Open, Roberts made his season debut in the 400 meter by running a to edge out 2010 European champion Kevin Borlee. Roberts is a five-time All-American and captured gold at the U.S. Indoor Championships and helped the U.S. to a gold medal in the 4x400 relay during the 2012 indoor season. Member of the 2009 United States World Championships team... finished second at the outdoor U.S. Champinoships Big 12 outdoor 400M champion with a school record and personal best time of U.S. 400m Champion 2012 Indoors IAAFWorld Champion 4x400 Relay 2012 Indoors CATCHING UP WITH TEXAS TECH - RED RAIDER OPEN - MAY 5 (May 5, 2012) LUBBOCK, Texas - Heading into the final home outdoor meet of her career, senior Taylor Evans wanted to leave a lasting mark. In just the second running event of the evening under the lights of the Fuller Track and Field Complex, that s exactly what she did. Evans and the Lady Raider 4x100 relay team broke a seven-year school record with time of to kick off a thrilling home finale for the No. 9 Lady Raiders and No. 10 Red Raiders Saturday night. We felt honored, Evans said. We have three seniors and one junior on the team, and we have run together for three years. We wanted the record on our home track. We wanted it so bad. The Lady Raider record-setting 4x100 relay team is comprised of Erica Alexander, Taylor Evans, Candace Jackson and Evans.The 4x100 relay was the first of two school records to be broken Saturday at the Red Raider Open meet, an overall performance that panned out exactly as head coach Wes Kittley had planned. I believe this is the best meet we have had all year, Kittley said. You see this before the Big 12 Championships and it makes us very excited. Shortly afterwards on the pole vault runway, junior Shade Weygandt delivered the second record breaking performance of the night. Weygandt cleared the bar at 4.50 meters ( ) to set a new school record and a new Fuller Track and Field Complex Record.Weygandt, the first women s All-American pole vaulter in school history, broke her own school record of 4.45 meters ( ) set on April 8 last season.with the mark she met the Olympic `A Standard for the women s pole vault. Texas Tech continued to put on a show as senior sprinter Gil Roberts captured a win in his first 400 meter race of the outdoor season. Roberts ran a blazing of time of as the five-time All-American edged out 2010 European Champion Kevin Borlee of Belgium to leap into the national lead for the event. Roberts time currently ranks No. 3 in the world for the 2012 outdoor season. Senior Precious Nwokey turned in an impressive performance in two events on Saturday. She set a new personal best time in the women s 100 meter hurdles as well as a new personal best mark in the high jump. In the hurdles, the Kentucky transfer edged out teammate Katie Grimes to place first with a time of Grimes followed in second with a time of Roxie Greve also set a new personal record with a time of she finished sixth. Meanwhile, Nwokey won the high jump event with a mark of 1.73 meters ( ). Nwokey enters the Big 12 meet next weekend as the school record holder in the heptathlon, which she set earlier this year at the Texas Relays. The No. 9 Lady Raiders put together a string of impressive performances in the 200 meter dash as all three runners recorded personal best marks. Jackson won the event with a personal best time of She was followed by teammates Alexander and Cierra White. Alexander placed third with a personal best time of while White followed in sixth with a personal best time of In the 800 meter run, sophomore Rachel Folan set a five-second personal record with a time 2: In the field events, junior Bryce Lamb set a new personal record in the triple jump. On the heels of the 2012 Indoor Championships Texas Tech earned a total of nine indoor All-American honors by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Monday. Junior Bryce Lamb, who placed fourth overall in the long jump, along with members of the Lady Raider 4x400 relay team earned first team All-American honors. The 4x400 relay team comprised of Taylor Evans, Candace Jackson, Erica Alexander and Olivia Lewis, finished seventh overall at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho over the weekend. Meanwhile, Kelly Closse (weight throw, shot put), Katie Grimes (60 meter hurdles) and Kyal Meyers (pole vault) each earned second-team honors. 5 2012 TRACK AND FIELD RED RAIDERS, LADY RAIDERS ATOP NATIONAL POLLS As they have done throughout the season, both the Red Raiders and Lady Raiders received national attention Tuesday with the release of the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association rankings. The Red Raiders jumped seven spots to No. 3 while the Lady Raiders moved up to No. 6 in Week 6 of the national rankings entering the Big 12 Championships this weekend in Manhattan, Kan. It marks the fourth time this season the two teams have appeared together in the top 10. The Lady Raiders were just outside the top 10 at No. 11 during both Week 2 (April 10) and Week 3 (April 17). The Red Raiders have been in the top 10 each week since opening at No. 4 in the preseason poll on March 22.The Red Raiders made the largest jump of any team in the top 25 with the seven-spot leap. The squad benefited from the return of five-time All-American Gil Robertswho made his season debut in the 400 meter dash Saturday. TECH POLE VAULTERS A pair of Tech pole vaulters have held the conference lead for the majority of the 2012 outdoor season. Junior Shade Weygandt and sophomore Kyal Meyers have both had impressive 2012 seasons, and with it lead the pack in the Big 12 entering the conference championships. Weygandt enters the conference championships with a firm lead in the event after breaking a school record and setting a new personal best with a vault of 4.50 meters ( ) just last weekend at the Red Raider Open. She moved to No. 2 on the national list with the clearance and also met the Olympic qualifying A standard. Meanwhile sophomore Kyal Meyers leads the Big 12 men s pole vault with a season best clearance of 5.41 meters ( ), a personal best, which he cleared at the Texas Tech Open on April 14. TECH HURDLERS Texas Tech has long been known for producing some of the best hurdlers in the country and the 2012 outdoor season has been no different. Two of Tech s seniors, Jamele Mason and Shane Brathwaite, have jumped out to fast starts to the season, both ranking among the top in the nation. Shane Brathwaite enters this week as the No meter hurdler in the country (No. 1 in the Big 12) with a season-best time of recorded at the Texas Relays. He also ranks No. 16 nationally, No. 3 in the Big 12, in the 400 meter hurdles. Meanwhile teammate Jamele Mason ranks No. 2 nationally in the 400 meter hurdles with a season-best time of which he recorded on April 7 at the LSU Invitational Battle on the Bayou. He also ranks No. 10 in the 110 meter hurdles with a time of Mason s times rank No. 1 and No. 4 in the Big 12. Entering his 13th season at the helm of the Texas Tech track and field program, the veteran head coach has made his distinct mark on the program as he continues to maintain its status as one of the elite programs in the country. With his program consistently ranked in the Top 25 of the national polls, Kittley has produced a plethora of top athletes in the country. Over the past ten years, Kittley has had 141 All-Americans and 92 Big 12 Champions in their respective events. He coached Jonathan Johnson to the NCAA title in the 800M and Sally Kipyego won nine national championships in cross-country, the indoor 3000M and 5000M, and the outdoor 10000M. Kipyego became only the second female in NCAA Division I history to win nine NCAA titles and she is also the most decorated athlete in Big 12 history with 14 titles. 6 2012 TRACK AND FIELD TECH JUMPS BRYCE LAMB TECH MULTIS PRECIOUS NWOKEY TECH SPRINTERS GIL ROBERTS TECH THROWERS Kole Weldon IFEATU OKAFOR Bryce Lamb has a knack for getting off to fast starts and has done it again during the 2012 outdoor season. After earning first team All-American honors during the indoor season with a third place finish at the NCAA Indoor Championships he hasn t missed a beat. At the Texas Relays, Lamb recorded a season-best mark of 7.94 meters ( ) on his second attempt. The jump ranks No. 3 in the country entering this weekend. Lamb is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American in the long jump and in 2010 he was named Performer of the Year and Oustanding Freshman by the Big 12 Conference during the indoor season. Precious Nwokey has made an immediate impact on the Texas Tech track and field squad since transferring from Kentucky. The senior broke the school heptathlon record at the Texas Relays with a total of 5,333 points to finish third overall. The point-total ranks second in the Big 12 and No. 12 nationally. Nwokey also ranks No. 14 nationally in the 100 meter hurdles and No. 21 in the long jump. She s also a member of the 4x400 relay team that ranks No. 7 nationally. Senior Gil Roberts leads the Texas Tech sprinters into the Big 12 Championships after putting on a show last weekend at the Red Raider Open winning the 400 meter dash with a time of (later adjusted to for altitude) to jump to the national. Roberts was later named Big 12 Athlete of the Week on Wednesday. Along with Roberts, Terra Evans, Taylor Evans and Candace Jackson each look to make noise in Manhattan. Terra Evans ranks No. 3 in the Big 12 in the 100 meter dash with a season-best time of Meanwhile her sister Taylor ranks No. 4 in the 200 meter with a season-best time Candace Jackson is tied with Taylor Evans in the No. 4 spot, also with a season-best time of Kole Weldon has had a banner year in 2012, and it only continued at the Red Raider Open last weekend. Weldon placed first in the shot put and the sopho more transfer from Midwestern set a personal record in the shot put last weekend at the Red Raider Open with a mark of meters ( ). He placed first in the shot and second in the discus. His personal best throw of meters ( ) in the discus ranks No. 4 in the country entering this weekend. Weldon has a total of five wins in the shot put and six top-five finishes in the discus this season. Ifeatu Okafor has established herself as one of the top throwers at Texas Tech. Okafor has captured four first place finishes in the shot put and three in the discus. Last weekend at the Red Raider Open, Okafor won the shot put with a season-best mark of meters ( ) and also placed first in the discus. She had a personal-best mark of ( ) to run away with the victory in the discus at the West Texas A&M Open. Okafor s throw was the best by a Lady Raider since the 2009 season and currently ranks No. 9 in the country.
