1 Commodore s Corner VOLUME 2 May 2016 It is great to see the Club come back to life as the warm weather is finally here. The marina is filling up as we get ready to officially start the season. Please join your fellow Club members as we hold our Commissioning Ceremony on Saturday May 21, 2016 at 1800 hours. After the ceremony, you are invited to stay and enjoy an evening featuring an ala carte menu and music provided by Sean Morrissey. I encourage you to keep an eye out for our many eblasts and to consult the web-site for upcoming events. A new media committee is in its infant stages under the direction of Club Secretary Sarah S. Ferrante and committee chairperson Dr. Angela Greco with the hopes of improving Club communications. Please mark your calendar for a few upcoming events in June. The Commodore s Ball will be held on Saturday June 11, 2016 and the Annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held on June 19, Details will be forthcoming for both events. I want to congratulate John Streicker, Bruce P. Kuryla, P.C. and Defiant for a very successful Key West Race Week this winter. Finally, as most Club members know, Dr. Mark R. Laser and Fady Khairallah are taking up the challenge of crossing the Atlantic as part of the ARC Europe 2016 Rally in First Light in early May. They will be joined on various legs of the voyage by Rear Commodore Robert Colum, Board Member Jeffrey D. Stuart and his son Kyle, Lou Roberts, Eric Stanley and Brian Williams. On Saturday afternoon April 30, 2016, Mark and Fady are generously opening First Light for those interested in seeing what they have done to prepare for the trip. I want to express to them all of our best wishes for a safe voyage and we look forward to hearing all of the stories upon their return. Please come down April 30, 2016 and wish them the best in person. Michael Dean Amato Commodore

3 SECRETARY S CORNER In accordance with Article VI, Section 1 The following members have been approved for Membership at our most recent Board of Directors meeting: New Members Sponsored By Cameron Costen B Membership Committee Susan Ratkiewich D Bud & Tina Franke Bob Colum Patricia Decker D Membership Committee SAVE THE DATE!!!! Milford Yacht Club to Host 8 th Annual Blessing of the Fleet Sunday, June 19th It s getting near that time of the year again Soon, summer will be the air, boats will be in the water. Tradition says that participation the Blessing of the Fleet ritual will assure cruisers of fair weather and safe passage, and racers of success on the race course. Others say this is mere superstition, but why take chances? Come join us on Sunday, June 19th The Blessing of the Fleet is a time honored tradition that goes back many centuries into the murky sea of legend and tradition originating in southern European, predominately Catholic, fishing communities. A blessing from the local priest was meant to ensure a safe and bountiful season. In 2009 the Milford Yacht Club restored this tradition with an interfaith ceremony. Our Blessing of the Fleet ritual is intended to safeguard our boaters, crew, guests and vessels from the danger of the seas through a blessing given by our local clergymen at the water s edge. With the summer boating season soon upon us we also need to remind ourselves how blessed we are to have a beautiful harbor and estuary like Milford s in our own back yard! So SAVE THE DATE and be on the lookout for more information to follow in the coming weeks!! Those interested in joining the fun and lively Blessing of the Fleet committee; contact Alan Liebnick at fleetcaptain@milfordyachtclub.com. You won t be disappointed. in in

9 FIRST LIGHT TRANSATLANTIC RACE Ever dream about crewing in a transatlantic race? Well some of your fellow MYC members are making that dream a reality! First Light a Tartan 4100, owned by Dr. Mark Laser and Fady Khairallah have entered the ARC Europe 2016 Rally. On May 7 th, First Light will join the fleet at the starting line in Portsmouth Virginia for the 1st leg to Bermuda, after a restart will then head to the Azores and finally to the finish line in Lagos, Portugal, traveling a total of 3,299 NM. The MYC crew members include Dr. Mark Laser, Fady Khairallah, Brian Williams, Lou Roberts, Eric Stanley, Bob Colum, Jeff Stuart and a MYC Junior Sailor, Kyle Stuart. This is the first time in memory that Milford Yacht Club is being represented on a transatlantic race with an all MYC member crew! To participate in an event of this magnitude requires months of preparation. First Light has been overhauled, furnished with upgraded sails, and provided with the latest safety, navigation and communication equipment. The crew, although seasoned racers/cruisers, have attended safety at sea seminars, participated in many on-water training sessions, safety drills and completed a 24 hour shakedown cruise to test and confirm they are prepared. MYC would like to invite all members, children and guests to come to the official First Light send-off party on Saturday, April 30 from 1-4 pm. The MYC restaurant will be featuring Happy Hour pricing with many food favorites. Bring guests and enjoy tours of First Light, questions about preparations, logistics, safety, race strategy, electronics / navigation and provisioning. You are also invited to have lunch or stay for dinner (reservations requested). Don t miss this opportunity to wish our valiant sailors safe passage, fair winds and following seas! Toast to their success! Follow First Light, blogs and virtual tracking (just like the Volvo) on: MYC Introduces new MATH program Tired of listening to your Jr sailor complain, No Mom, your wrong! That s not how it s done. You don t know anything! Well, now you can reply with confidence. Milford Yacht Club is proud to introduce its new MATH program. MATH (Mothers At The Helm) is an exciting program being offered this summer to teach mothers how to sail while their children are at Jr sailing. Using our J/22 boats you will have the opportunity to learn basic sailing skills. I can t think of a better way to spend the morning or afternoon than with a group of your friends and an instructor sailing with a latte in hand! Interested parties please contact Alan Liebnick at fleetcaptain@milfordyachtclub.com. Space will be limited, so sign up now!
